The Sapling is a short simulation game where you design your own plants and animals, and put them in a world together. Or you turn on random mutations, and see what evolution does to your ecosystem!
Features
- Design plants and animals.
- Fast-forward time to and watch the ecosystem work like a charm or slowly fall apart (probably the latter :) ).
- A sandbox mode where you can skip time and turn on random mutation, allowing true evolution.
- An instinct system where you can specify what an animal should do when it hears or sees something.
- A procedural animation system so any animal can perform any animation.
- Procedural music mixed on the fly.
- Everything set up to be easily extended by players.
This looks just like Spore!
Wessel Stoop has wanted to play a simulation game where you can build your own plants and animals, put them in a world, and see what happens since 2002. You can imagine his excitement when Will Wright, the father of simulation games, demoed his latest game Spore to an enthusiastic crowd. When Spore turned out to be all game genres except simulation, Wessel decided he wanted to try to make the game by himself. The Sapling is the result of that attempt.
Patch v13.22 (beta only)
Simulation fixes
\n\n- \n
- Prevented another way the sessile feet could evolve to be on the side. This bug causes numerous problems, like plants multiplying, corrupt saves and missing models in the species list view (thanks azul1462, TaterTot, MisterLiteralRandomGuy!) EDIT: hmm I just encountered this problem again, still not fully fixed\n
- Fixed sessile animal babies moving around (thanks ultraneongodpet, Jupiter Hater!)\n
Working on new limb body parts
\n\n- \n
- Added a new gliding limb as intermediary step between insect limbs and insect wings\n
- Remodeled the pterodactyl wings to be more impressive and closer to reality\n
- Added top and back models for the exisitng gas bag body part\n
- Added second larger gas bag body part\n
- Fixed forcipule bodypart (was pointing the wrong way)\n
- Improved the hitboxes for various limbs, so it\'s easier to (re)move them\n
Terrain editor fixes
\n\n- \n
- When hovering multiple continents, only the smallest one now lights up (thanks Tatertot, Col. caboose!)\n
- When hovering a contintent with a small map size in the planet editor, it now highlights correctly\n
- When drawing new land mid simulation with a small map size, it now shows up at the correct position, with a size matching the brush size\n
- Drawing outside of the map mid simulation no longer causes terrain in the exact middle\n
- When toggling rings, the stats are now always updated correctly\n
- Fixed the black maps that sometimes showed when editing terrain mid simulation\n
- Fixed drawing mid simulation no longer being possible after changing the elevation of a continent\n
Soil statistic fixes
\n\n- \n
- Added nutrients to the soil statistics in the world, including for the first time the option to paint nutrients\n
- Got the wild fire risk map to work mid simulation\n
- Fixed the wrong slider showing when looking at the wildfire risk in the planet editor\n
- Your changes to manual statistics in the planet editor are now actually used in the simulation (thanks azul1462!)\n
- You no longer lose all your manual statistic changes in the planet editor when switching to the planet or disaster tabs \n
- Fixed softness/rockiness being inverted in some views\n
- Fixed polar regions often being black instead of white when looking at the climate zones mid simulation\n
- Fixed volcano eruption not updating the soil stats (thanks lin!)\n
Improving terrain editor audio
\n\n- \n
- In the planet editor, the sound effects when editing terrain now match your cursor movements more closely.\n
- The terrain editing sound effects now stop less abruptly\n
