When we released Safe mode for SOMA some years ago we didnt really know how it would be received or if it would make a difference at all to the players out there. Today we know that it was well worth the effort and that the mode allowed a whole new audience to experience the game. We got a lot of player feedback from people appreciating SOMAs safe mode, and nearly every single interview leading up to the release of Amnesia: Rebirth contained the question Will it come with a safe mode?. This indicates to us that the mode has had an important influence on SOMAs reception. Now, weve created something very similar for Rebirth.

Safe mode allowed players to take in SOMAs narrative, atmosphere, story and theme, without having to worry about monsters attacking them. And even though Amnesia: Rebirth has a foundation in the same kind of horror that once made Amnesia: The Dark Descent so successful, the game shares many characteristics with SOMA.

With Adventure Mode we hope that new players, that have a hard time handling horror as a genre, will get to experience Tasis story. That they will get to immerse themselves in the character and the unforgiving environments of Rebirth, as they fight for survival for themselves and those closest to them.



Playing the game in Adventure Mode still contains the same serious themes and story - and the atmosphere can still be quite unnerving at times - but the experience is going to be much less of a horror experience and more one of an epic adventure.

[h3]Heres a summary of the features that comes with the new Adventure Mode:[/h3]

• Monsters still exist in the game but they wont attack you anymore.
  
• Locations that contained pitch black darkness have been brightened up a lot, making environments possible to explore at ones own pace, allowing for easier navigation and removes some of the oppressive atmosphere.
  
• No active fear mechanic, meaning that you dont have to worry about taking fear from being in darker areas or near monsters.
  
• A few bonus puzzles.

When we released Amnesia: Rebirth in October we were quite happy to see that very few major bugs got reported. At Frictional we have tried to adopt a zero defect policy throughout the development of Rebirth, which basically means that defects and bugs should be fixed as soon as they pop up, and that approach seems to have paid off.

However, during the first few weeks of this year we started seeing an influx of reports surrounding a new specific type of bug. It seemed text, crosshair, interaction icons and menu art started disappearing a bit randomly, while people were playing the game. As you can imagine, this took us a bit by surprise and since we couldnt reproduce this thing ourselves we felt quite powerless as to how we could do something about this.

Luckily, a few weeks back, we actually experienced the same issue myself on one our own PCs. This finally gave us something to work with and we eventually managed to trace this bug back to a Windows 10 patch that was released late last year. It seemed that in certain cases the GPU was reading data before the CPU had finished writing it, causing UI elements to randomly disappear.

With the help of our friends at Nvidia we managed to find a way to fix this issue and after having had this tested out on our BETA branch on Steam (thanks everyone for helping out with the tests!), we now feel confident that the problem has been solved.

Patch 1.2 for Amnesia: Rebirth is out now out!

In this patch we believe weve finally managed to identify and fix the most serious bug weve had left to fix the one where some players have gotten stuck on black screen immediately after the intro. It was a hardware-related bug which made it particularly difficult to reproduce.

With version 1.2 we also bring you Custom Stories and modding tools! This allows you to create everything from slightly modified versions of the base game to full conversions with all new assets, as well as play other peoples creations. Custom Stories can be uploaded to Steam Workshop. See more info below!

Various blockers and other bugs have also been fixed.

In summary:

• Custom Stories can now be selected from the main menu.
  
• The editors used in the development of Amnesia: Rebirth have been added to the install directory of the game.
  
• Fear is no longer increased while reading notes.
  
• Disabling Video Distortion now disables the pulsing tilt and zoom effect while standing in darkness.
  
• Inventory can now be opened with D-Pad Up on gamepads that dont have a View/Back button.
  
• Fixed a major bug where the game would be stuck on a black screen after the intro.
  
• Fixed a bug where the game would not progress after a major late-game cutscene.
  
• Fixed a bug where some memories could not be replayed from the sketchbook.
  
• Fixed a bug where some objects wouldnt play sounds while being dragged across the floor.
  
• Various other bugfixes.
  

Patch 1.1 for Amnesia: Rebirth is out now!

This patch is mostly about bug fixes, both some linux focus, some blockers and other minor issues. The most notable change for most players will be the ability to skip memories by holding the interact button (left mouse button or right trigger if on a gamepad).

In summary:

• You can now skip memories by holding down the left mouse button, or right trigger on a gamepad.
  
• Linux graphics glitch fixed.
  
• Various blockers fixed.
  
• Various bug fixes.
  

• Mod-support. We are almost there, but want to test it properly before launching it.
  
• More linux fixes.
  
• General bug fixing.
  

Today we released a new patch for Amnesia: Rebirth, containing a few improvements worth pointing out.

The change that will most likely have the biggest effect on the experience is the toning down of the fear flashes. These flashes were never really meant to be scares in themselves but their main purpose is instead to clearly signal to the player that their fear is reaching critical levels. Sometimes its difficult for us as developers to fully compute how these things will affect the overall experience and its not until you start seeing them in gameplay sessions (by youtubers and streamers) and hearing about them in feedback from players, that you realize that youve taken them a bit too far.

We have therefore now toned down the audio and visuals of these flashes as well as tweaked how and when they appear a bit. They are still an important aspect of the game and serve a purpose, but will hopefully strike a better balance from now on.
