Improvements and Fixes - 1.2.8

New Content

  • Players can no longer move while the level selection room is spinning. This is to prevent players falling through the level if they time a jump wrong.
  • There is now a symbol on the tool interfaces designating tool interfaces which data can be transferred to.
  • Increased the size of some sliders to make them easier to click on.
Fixes and Optimizations
  • Saving the game has been reworked and is now more similar to how other game's auto-save features, and saving is limited to approximately 30 times per second.
  • Multiple bugs which caused the game to save excessive amounts have been fixed.
This version of the game is identical to the Nintendo Switch version, releasing July 29th, outside of the following differences which are unique to the Switch version.
  • Graphics scalability settings
  • Game menus
  • Interface hints (icons showing you what mouse button to click are replaced with controllers)
  • Bounding boxes around sliders are larger to make clicking on them easier with a controller
  • Some minor visual effects are not present

Minor Update - 1.2.7

New Content

  • The movement of the elevators and of the 4-bit computer in the quantum levels now scale their speed more consistently across different frame rates.
  • You can now use the back buttons or pause menu buttons to return from the options menu.
Fixes and Optimizations
  • Fixed a bug that would cause the quantum level elevators to disable their floor selecting controllers if they arrived at their destination floor too soon. They would only move this fast if the game was running at or near 120 FPS.
  • Fixed a bug that allowed players to get the quantum elevators stuck by calling them while they were already moving.
  • Improved a bug where players could fall though the level selection room tunnels leading toward the portals.

Minor Update - 1.2.6

New Content

  • Added some particle and lighting effects to the new final level
Fixes and Optimizations
  • Fixed a bug introduced into some filter graphs in the last update which prevented them from updating
  • Fixed some small collision issues in two different levels
  • Made it harder to jump on top of analog filter circuits
  • Fixed a typo changing "virtical" to vertical
  • Fixed an unintended change which prevented the player from returning from the final area after completing the game
  • Fixed a new bug that prevented players from using the tool interface controlling the sequence generator in digital level in the first of the side rooms

Major Update - 1.2.5

New Content

  • New final level
  • Circuit symbols now scale based on distance from the player
  • Updated menus
  • Adjusted the volume of some sound effects
  • Made some slider and button collision boxes larger
  • Added some small details to a few areas
  • Added functionality to the tool interfaces to test for and prevent the player from trying to use them if an object is in the way
  • Adjusted the detection boxes and opening speed of some doors
  • Fixed a visual issue with one of the analog puzzle boxes which made it hard to understand
  • Made some black relays clear because they look better and it wasn't really necessary to make them non-transparent in the first place
  • (Secret stuff which will be announced soon)
Fixes and Optimizations
  • Fixed several missing or misaligned collisions
  • Puzzle pieces that didn't need to save their state no longer do
  • Filter circuits, graphs, and puzzle boxes now all do a better job of only performing calculations when the player is near. This was a major optimization for the analog and digital levels.
  • Fixed a bug where you could get trapped in the hallway to the factory when exiting the factory
  • Fixed a couple typos
  • Optimized the big analog motor portal and its controller
  • Disabled unnecessary level streaming in the analog levels so there will be fewer hangups when walking around
  • Fixed a bug with the puzzle boxes which caused them to not start in the correct state if the player wasn't nearby
  • Fixed a mistake I made on the first analog puzzle box to the right which went unnoticed for a very long time

Major Update - 1.14

New Content

  • Added an opening scene to further introduce the player to the setting and story when creating a new game.
  • Switched to a new method of moving sliders which is more precise and easier to use
  • Added two hidden secrets (one easy to find and one hard)
  • Added two new achievements, one for each of the new secrets
  • Made it possible for players to return to an early game area that they once couldn't
  • Improved menu layout and appearance
  • Opened up the tolerance on the analog filter / graph puzzles so that slider positions don't have to be as precise.
  • Added more hints and made other hints clearer
  • Made changes to some menu text to make it's meaning more clear
Fixes and Optimizations
  • Updated from Unreal Engine 4.24 to 4.25.4 (this includes lots of Linux fixes and optimization improvements)
  • Fixed a missing collision under the stairs in the analog level
  • Fixed minor menu bugs
  • Major CPU optimizations in the analog level (circuit components will now stop performing calculations if the player gets too far away from them)
  • Improved GPU performance by optimizing dynamic lighting on multiple levels

  • Made some slight improvements to the options menu layout
  • Added a new achievement for completing the game without using hints
  • Added ability to exit the pause menu without needing to press the return button
  • Improved the way that movement speed is calculated for moving circuit components based on frame rate
Bug Fixes:
  • Filled a gap in the collision on the bottom floor of the digital level
  • Fixed a bug that sometimes set the hints level to engineer when opening and re-opening the options menu
  • The quantum puzzle's step counter will no longer go over the max when finishing it
  • The reset button on the second quantum puzzle will no longer bypass the puzzle to open the door

  • Some behind the scenes additions to lay the groundwork for future updates
Bug Fixes:
  • The final analog puzzle can no longer be bypassed / cheesed
  • The level selection rooms will now rotate correctly after the third rotation and onward
  • A few typos were fixed
  • The wire for the first puzzle on the digital level is now lit up at game start as it should be

The Long Gate

I started work on the Long Gate almost four years ago, and during that time also graduated from engineering school, wrote two novels, and worked as a robotics programmer. During this busy and stressful period of my life, one thing I wanted dearly was to create a world that was both beautiful and relaxing to be in. Then, given my background and love of challenging puzzle games, circuit based puzzles felt like a natural thing to fill this cavernous world with. I created nearly everything in The Long Gate as a lone developer, then, in 2019 began working with my longtime friend Nick Newman on the games original soundtrack. One aspect of the game that is important to me was to make learning how to solve the many different types of puzzles feel as intuitive as possible for players. There are no written instructions or "in your face" tutorials. It was also important to me that the principles behind most of the three types of circuit puzzles (digital, analog, and quantum) be accurate to real life. So, in the early months of 2020, I partnered with D-Wave Systems, the world's first commercial quantum computer company, to ensure the accuracy of the quantum puzzles that are based on the same technology used in their quantum computers. For me, The Long Gate has been both a challenge and a joy to create, and, once completed, I hope it will be a joy to play and a challenge for many. After The Long Gate is published later this year, I plan to quickly begin production on a new game. So if you like what I've made, give me a follow, and please enjoy the free demo.

Many of the puzzles can be completed in any order and some have more than a single solution for you to discover.

Nearly all The Long Gate’s puzzles are based on real world technology, and it contains accurate depictions of quantum circuits and a 4-bit quantum computer, verified by scientists at D-Wave Systems, the world’s first commercial quantum computer company.

The Long Gate also features an original soundtrack by Nicholas Newman.
