The latest update to Retro Commander has just landed, and it's bringing a whole new level of excitement to the battlefield. Players can now take command of an alien faction, adding an exciting new dimension to the game's RTS mechanics. This new faction introduces a unique play style with powerful, otherworldly units, advanced technology, and strategies that will challenge even the most experienced commanders. Whether youre facing off against other players or battling through the campaign, the alien faction adds fresh, tactical depth to every encounter, making every match feel uniquely intense.
Alongside this new faction, Retro Commander also introduces a brand-new chapter to its campaign, complete with stunning comic book-style cutscenes that advance the story. The narrative delves deeper into the conflict between humans and aliens, offering players a chance to unravel the mysteries of this intergalactic war. The new chapter promises exciting twists and high-stakes missions that will keep players on the edge of their seats. Whether youre playing as the humans or the aliens, this new content expands the lore and takes the Retro Commander experience to a whole new level.
Internal updates for CH08 development (not relevant for players).
LAN games could crash if the player joing a LAN game had an older version of the map with required resources (images, render information) missing. The game now outputs an error message with instruction to upgrade to the latest map version rather than crashing. Simply update the map and then re-join the LAN game and it will work. Sorry for the previous crashes.
Some sound FX/music was in stereo, rather than mono and have been updated.
Going from the first to the ADVANCED tutorial directly was broken. No hints were shown.
Bugfix for palm/jungle shadows and snowy transition (minor).
Noble Master Games announces Retro Commander, a post-apocalyptic, futuristic real-time strategy game (RTS), after 6+ years of development. The game takes place in a world where a cataclysmic timeline has transpired on Mother Earth. Its a mix between Command & Conquer and Supreme Commander, featuring base building, research and resource management.
Retro Commander tries to emulate the classic RTS look and feel, albeit with modern day controls and elements. The game focuses on both single and multiplayer matches. A comic-backed story campaign follows the footsteps of Agent Johnson, who wakes up in a futuristic wasteland. In over 25+ missions, you need to make new friends and fight against their enemies. The single player AI comes with several difficulty levels. In multiplayer games you fight co-op style with the AI and other players for ultimate victory. Players are given an ELO-like rating. The game supports cross-platform multiplayer matches.
Features:
Just a short update: Retro Commander will come out of EARLY ACCESS on November 25, 2023. We are currently doing bugfixing, balancing and other tweaking until then. The official campaign and official skirmish maps are ready, but are also currently getting an overhaul.
That said, we will continue working on the game after the release. Depending on how it all goes, we are planning to add an Alien faction. It's currently in planning.
Please post here if you have any questions or concerns?
Bugfix Crashes: while rendering timer bar on older maps.
Bugfix for crashes on 32 bit architectures. Another test-version for Mac OS X to get it working on M1 architectures. Please report back...
Bugfix Crashes for older, not updated, maps with assets missing.
Bugfix for multiple build robots to return too many assets during deconstruction (removal).
Fluffy was missing in the latest binary preventing players to create or update modded maps.
I managed to put together a basic introduction video which should explain everything that's needed to get started. Video is now on YouTube. [previewyoutube=d7ZMeS9HkXk;full][/previewyoutube] I'll try to answer any questions you have here or on the discussion feed on YouTube.
There was a 'null'-pointer exception when trying to create a multiplayer game. It should now be back to normal. Sorry for that.
Based on player feedback, hosting multiplayer games on the official servers is now free. Otherwise, to unlock the game, there is a "All Maps & Modding" DLC which unlocks all the current and future maps (it's the same as the in-app purchase, so don't purchase it again). It also includes the campaign missions or any other map content provided in the future. The DLC includes everything for single player, including LAN or WAN play. There is no DRM. The maps update regularly, so rather than in the DLC, they can be downloaded from within the game. You don't need to login to the game or connect to the internet to play single player games. That said, you still need to be connected to the internet to download the maps for obvious reasons (no login required for the DLC).
Retro Commander is now available as EARLY ACCESS. The game should be fully functioning, but there is still a lot to be done, especially the campaign mission. We would also like to gather some player feedback if possible. Maybe some things you want to see in the game? The main concern is probably why the game is free to download? Is it going to be pay-2-win? Where's the catch? The game isn't actually free but comes with downloadable maps (DLC). The maps are available within the game. You can unlock all the current and future maps via a one-time payment of "All Maps & Modding" inside the game. It includes everything for single player including the story campaign, skirmishing against the AI or LAN-play with friends and family. You don't need to make any other payments if that's what you want. You don't need to connected to the internet to play single player games or the campaign. You don't need to be logged in to play LAN games either. You don't need to login either for WAN games (locally hosted games over the internet), but you will have to work out your router settings and do the appropriate port-forwarding so your friends can connect from remote. Other than that, if ONLINE-play is your thing, you will need to login via Steam to play via the official game servers. You don't need to create a 3rd-party account, your Steam login will suffice. The games are not pay-2-win. However, in order to cover server fees, there is a fee to host games via the official servers (joining is free). If that's not your thing, please simply create a LAN or WAN game. Although some troops are shared, the game is trying not to be a generic RTS-games. There are faction-specific technologies each with their strengths and weaknesses.
