Bug fixes & big update to prepare for Online cross-play

A lot of core update had to be done to prepare for the Online cross-play with console. Including some core libraries and engine updates, we've done our best to avoid any bugs but there might be still a few sneaky ones that made their way in as there are a log of big changes. Please be patient and do let us know on Steam of Discord if you run into any bugs! We also fixes the old ones we were aware of: Changelog: + Major updates to prepare for cross-play. + Fix broken achievements "Skynet Wins". + Improve Chinese translations. + Fix game stuck in local when last two players are punched at the same time. + Fix lighting issues on mac and linux. + Fix bot speed being different at lower fps.

Wow, we finally did it! It seemed completely impossible when we started our first game 4 years ago, but it now has an ONLINE mode! To play, someone must create a room and share the code with the other players. You can join our discord to find players if none of your friends are prepared to buy the game yet. It's getting close but before we can let it out in the wild we have a lot of testing to do! And there are only three of us at GrosChevaux!

You can now play from 2 to 8 players


As you can imagine, it can get a bit crazy on some levels with 8 players, but you can come up with a lot of new strategies to punch all of your friends!

[New feature] Round timers:


The default way to play is still with unlimited time to blend in the crowds of AIs for as long as you want, but we added an option to limit the rounds in time. With 8 players, if there are experiences differences between players, it can get a bit long for the one who always dies early, so you can now set a limit of 1 to 4 minutes per round! At the end of the timer, all remaining players are revealed and the level ends. Make sure you're ready to throw a few punches in the last few seconds!

Unspottable 1.0.2: Improvement and bug fixes update

Unspottable has been out for a month! We have been busy, turns out releasing a first game is a lot of work! :D Sorry, no new levels or online mode quite yet but a small update to fix some annoying bugs. We are currently focusing on getting the console versions ready (we're getting there, we'll give you updates as soon as we have anything concrete). The demo also got an update as it was a bit old, you can now play meadow, Sushi Bar and Prison for free. Here is the changelog: Features & Gameplay: - Battlefield: First bombs are slower to give players more time to find their character. - Disco: Level brighter to avoid losing characters in the dark. - Supero: New character designs. Bug Fixes: - Spaceship: Stop ability to use both distracts at once. - Supero: Add missing sounds when player collect all items. - Fix wrong titles in end screen. - Menus and end title screen control improvements. - On start screen, pressing 'shift' doesn't not create a new player to avoid clashing with Steam overlay shortcut . - Tried optimizatiosn for Parsec sound issue. (Should be fixed but please let us know if you have sound issues on Parsec!). - Various fixes. Performance Improvements: - Fix Medium performance mode. - Improve lights in Fast mode, to improve performance on older machines.

Unspottable is Out!

We are so excited to release our first game today!

Hide amongst a crowd of AIs in 12 different environments with specific gameplay mechanics: + Revealing spotlights + Falling Bombs+ Punching Robots + Sidequests and more... And an expert mode for experienced players who want to push the deception and mind games. "Walk like a robot, Punch like a Human!"
The game is local multiplayer only, no singleplayer, no in-game online mode.You can play online though, using services like Steam remote play. It has been live saver for us during this weird year where we have to do all our testing remotely!! Thank you to everyone who gave us feedback on the demo during all the online events we attended this year, we hope you'll enjoy the game as much as we've enjoyed making it! :) Consoles builds are almost there, so we should be able to release on Switch, Xbox One and PS4 in November! New Level Alert! Presenting the Spaceship!


As the release is approaching, (we're going to announce a date for the PC, mac and Linux release very soon) we can now show more of the last few levels! Presenting the spaceship! In the game we want to introduce a new mechanic per level. One of the mechanic we wanted to play with from the start was the teleportation, it seemed to be a pretty obvious one to work with the concept of the game, so we started with this idea: "A players enters a teleporter, they come out another one and two robots come out of other teleporters."
Testing this mechanic was fun but still missing something, teleporting is useful if you've been seen but it's also risky, the other players will know you are one of the three characters that just appeared. So it was still missing a reason to force or encourage the players to teleport! We had been toying with the idea of getting the player in a position where they get in trouble randomly but have a way to escape, to add a bit of tension, unpredictability and so players have a rush of adrenaline when they are at the wrong place, at the wrong time. For that we made the 'electrocution areas'. (We don't have a name for that, we call them electric pizza slices between us!). When the zone get electrified, the teleporter activates, and all the robots in the area die and disappear, leaving the player standing there on their own, visible to everyone! :)
This worked very well in test sessions, we just wanted the level to be a bit more intense, so we added the ability for player to teleport twice as they want using the distract button, that can lead to some good chain teleporting where keeping track of everyone becomes very challenging and lead to some fun situations! :D This required a good readbility, so we worked on good FX to show what is happening. :)

Unspottable demo is back

Our demo has been really popular during the steam summer game festival so we decided to put it back with 2 levels for now. Demo is available right now on Unspottable steam page. We will update this demo from time to time to add different levels so follow us on steam and twitter to get updated ;)

Meadow


Key elements:
  • The round ends when one player has been punched.
  • The number of bot is decreasing slowly. The longer the round the easier it is to spot the other players.

Sushi


Key elements:
  • There is another way to get points (other than by punching the other players), you can collect 4 sushi and leave the restaurant.
  • If you think other players have spotted you, you can do a diversion (twice per round), it will focus the game scene somewhere else and you'll be able to hide in the crowd again.

Unspottable Demo for Steam Game Festival


Unspottable Demo will be playable during the Steam Game Festival (16-22 June). Unspottable is a competitive couch party game where you need to punch your friends before they punch you. Blend in the crowd of AI characters, hunt down the other players and use the many different environment specific rules to win the game. "Walk like a robot and punch like a human!"

Demo Levels


The demo will include 4 levels:

Meadow


Key elements:
  • best level to start and to understand the core mechanics of the game.
  • The round ends when one player has been punched.
  • The number of bot is decreasing slowly. The longer the round the easier it is to spot the other players.

Gym


Key elements:
  • You must follow the coach's instructions like everybody or the other players may spot you.
  • If a bot punches you, you will lose 1 point.

Prison


Key elements:
  • The bots are revealed by the spot lights but not the player, so players should avoid them to avoid being spotted.
  • You can step on one of the floor buttons to turn off the lights for a few seconds, so you have time to hide in the dark.

Sushi


Key elements:

Unspottable: New Trailer

We made our first trailer early this year, since then we worked a lot to improve the character designs, shaders, rendering, lights and we added a lot of new levels and mechanics. So we created a new trailer to show what the game looks like now, in 4K and 60 fps. I hope you will enjoy it! Prototyping an Unspottable level

Working on Unspottable, we're trying to build new levels using the same core gameplay mechanic so the players are not lost with every new level, but adding a new twist in the gameplay so it's feels new and new strategies can be created with every level. To do that we usually brainstorm to get a bunch of ideas, any ideas, there always a lot of bad ones but some feel good enough to make to the next stage: Prototyping. This post shows the evolution of one of the Unspottable levels. 1. We come up with the idea: "It would be cool to have a level where it's a bit dark and some lights the characters, so players have to avoid them!" 2. Prototype the gameplay mechanic specific to that idea: [previewyoutube=tSO3jlD2s_c;full][/previewyoutube] 3. We then play the prototype, and tweak it to make sure it's fun and there isn't any loophole in the gameplay. In that case: - working on the number of spotlights - the speed of spotlights and path patterns, to avoid players staying too much in the corner or making it too easy for them to avoid them. [previewyoutube=I9dBGsyCrFU;full][/previewyoutube] - Addition of an extra hiding mechanic to let people hide again after they throw a punch, in that level, turning all the lights off for a few second so it gets too dark to keep an eye on characters.
4. After initial playtests with other people, if we decide the level is fun enough, we move on the art part of the level.

Unspottable will be playable for the first time at EGX Rezzed London from 26 to 28 March 2020 at Tobacco Dock, London. Come to our stand to try the game and chat with us steamhappy 4 players will be able to play in 4 different environments.

Unspottable: Blending ragdoll physics and animations


Blending Ragdoll physics and animation in Unity


This is a short techincal explanation of our system to blend between ragdoll physics and animation in unity 2019. It came from the need of adding more robots to the scene by dropping them from the sky, so after being ragdolled on the floor they had to get back to an animated state: [previewyoutube=M8ZjZjjrxTg;full][/previewyoutube] The ragdoll of the robots is fairly standard, they have an almost humanoid skeleton but not exactly. It can be achieved on humanoid models following this great Brackeys video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DInV-jHm9rk Once ragdolled on the floor, the first step is to figure out if the robot fell on its front or back. To do that we just compare the vector up of the root bone of our character and the default vector up. Vector3.Dot(rootBone.up, Vector3.up) > 0 We're only focusing on two cases, up or down but that could be improve to have better animations to get up at different angles. We can then choose between the two animations:

At that point, we want to blend between the positions of the ragdolled skeleton and the animation. That's done by calculating the position and rotation of each bone, using their current ragdolled position and their supposed animation position. Presenting Unspottable


GrosChevaux is a new indie game studio created by three long time friends.We've always dreamt of building games together and worked on many prototypes. The idea for Unspottable came from a game of One Piece Unlimited Adventure on Wii. After what seemed like a bug to us in the 1v1 mode, we ended up fighting in a crowd of the same 10 characters, not knowing which one we were controlling. We really enjoyed the experience of fighting without any indications on which character we were, nor on who our opponents were. We kept that idea in the back of our minds for 10 years! We love some games using this hide'n'seek concept: Garry's mod Guess Who, SpyParty, Hidden in plain sight, Assassin's Creed Multiplayer mode. But we always wished more of this game were local multiplayer as that's our favorite type of gaming session! We built on this basic concept of punching the other layers while hiding amongst AIs and create a lot of level prototypes with different rules and AIs to keep the gameplay accessible for everyone, interesting and competitive! What's next?


We currently have a playable version with 4 levels and a few more in prototype that we are currently using in playtests. Our goal is to have 15 levels at launch and then keep prototyping and coming up with fun new concepts after that! We're hoping to release by the end of the summer 2020.
