We've always thought that Halloween is one of the coolest holidays you can imagine. You get to dress as a monster and collect candy around the neighborhood. Fun! But here in Poland (where our Different Tales studio is located), we only knew it from TV. In our culture, we do celebrate the dead around this time, but in a wholly different manner. For a person from outside the Slavic region, the Poles' traditional approach to faith and death may seem a bit stiff. We don't sing too many uplifting songs in our churches, and the mass is less about being with the community than about diving into your inner self and quietly contemplating your soul. This is also how we honor our dead. On November 1, we celebrate All Saints' Day, which is a public holiday. Its name is self-explanatory, however, on November 2, there's All Souls' Day. This is the proper date when we should honor the departed. These two have mixed in the public consciousness and what we got is two days of not-quite-Halloween.

It is also customary to put a candle on unattended graves, under crosses or statues, or graves of unknown soldiers (which are a common sight, considering the scope of the tragedy of World War II in Poland). This results in truly breathtaking views of cemeteries sparkling with thousands and thousands of lights. We don't dress up or throw parties on All Saints' / Souls Day. Still, the atmosphere is hardly grim. It's a paradox, but it's when life is truly bustling. Thousands visit the cemeteries, there's so much positivity and openness around, and the bright aura seen in the evening is a sight to behold. Even if you're not a religious person yourself its hard not to get captivated by the spirit of this day. We presume that what you read above is a common tradition across the Slavic countries, however, we only speak from our own perspective. What do you do in your country around Halloween? Exactly one year ago, we've released the very first Werewolf: The Apocalypse video game in history! Now - one year later, we can honestly say that we couldn't be happier about the influence the game created. Not only did the Different Tales team won one of the most important cultural awards in Poland - Paszporty Polityki, as well as the Best Game Design Award at the Dev.Play 2020 Digital Awards, but the game gained such a great reaction and feedback from you - the players, which we couldn't even imagine.
The project itself was super important and personal for the Different Tales team, as the game writer Marta Malinowska said during the speech at the Paszporty Polityki Awards: This is a game about rage, and about turning it into something good. I want to dedicate it to all the people who took their anger this year, took to the streets, and decided to do something about the surrounding reality.
During this year, we have been improving the game experience for the PC players - we've released a free goodies pack here on Steam, and later on added the support for the Steam badges, backgrounds, trading cards, and emojis. At the beginning of this year, we've released the game for the console players on Nintendo Switch, Playstation, and Xbox platforms... and maybe in the future, there will come another platform the game could be released on ;) We're also super happy that after the release of Heart of the Forest so many players got the ability to know more about "Werewolf: The Apocalypse" from the World of Darkness. Hi there, World of Darkness fans! We have some fresh data about the way you played Heart of the Forest, and boy, did it surprise us! Just to recap: the game features more than 200,000 ways leading to one of the 5 main endings, and you can deeply personalize your character and playthrough. So, for a game about RAAAGE, its surprising that you frequently chose more peaceful approaches! Many players preferred to negotiate over going frenzy and attacking everything that moves. This is expressed in the auspices under which your Maias were born. See below.
Heres the glossary for those who are still new to the World of Darkness.

• Ragabash: A child born on the new moon, destined to be a master of stealth, trickery, and guile. Such werewolves are known as Questioners of the Ways, and they are granted latitude to break or at least bend the rules of Garou society that other werewolves are not.
• Theurge: Garou born under the crescent moon. Ritualists, spirit-masters, shamans, and mystics. The wan light of the crescent moon illuminates the spirits and the riddles they tell.
• Philodox: Werewolves born under the half-moon. Judges and balancers. Caught between extremes man and wolf, Garou and human, adaptation and tradition, spirit and flesh such Garou have to be able to make wise decisions on behalf of their fellows.
• Galliards: Werewolves born under the gibbous moon. Renowned for their memories and their creativity, they are destined to be storytellers and lore keepers/
• Ahroun: Garou born under the full moon. They are spirit warriors, the deadliest and most vicious of their kind.

So what is Heart of the Forest about?

Werewolf: The Apocalypse - Heart of the Forest throws you deep into a primeval wilderness in the center of modern Europe. Its where the protectors of nature wage their ancient, neverending war against the forces of destruction. You play as Maia, who comes to Poland hoping to trace her family roots. Trying to learn more about her ancestry, she will discover her familys dark secrets and reveal hidden truths about the last wilderness of Central Europe.
We decided to show real-world places of mystery and power into the game. We will also show you local legends, traditions, and the history of Polish-Belarusian borderlands. When playing through the game, you will need to mind your statistics as they determine your available choices and influence the overall presentation of every scene.
Rage is your main resource. The higher your Rage, the more go-getting and aggressive you become. However, this makes your perception quite binary, and you become unable to see all the shades of grey. Low Rage brings empathy and openness but also makes you fearful and less willing to act. Willpower is the resource you need to control yourself, and also to not get carried by your Rage. If you let it drop to zero, you wont be able to deal with many problems and situations. You gain Willpower by exploring the world, becoming better acquainted with it, and understanding it. Personality describes the kind of person you are in the game world. There are 5 auspices available, which determine the ways you can approach any character, obstacle, or situation. Early in the game, your personality will be shaped by your natural choices. Later on, you will have to choose your auspice and determine your true nature.

Why did we choose Puszcza Bialowieska as the setting?

The Bialowieza Forest, also known as the Puszcza or Puszcza Biaowieska, is one of the last primeval forests in Europe, located in Poland. Its a special place where nature exists in its most primal form right next to the big industry.
The Puszcza is a vast area full of myths and legends, which you will also find in our game. The first people settled here 2,000 years ago, but their presence remained relatively limited. This makes it a perfect setting for a World of Darkness story. The forest is where the wild survive in large part because of human influences, as, in the light of the changing climate, care and protection are absolutely crucial for the ecosystem. In recent years, large protests were held in the Puszcza against deforestation. This lets us ask questions that have always been relevant to Werewolf: The Apocalypse.
Where should our interference in nature end? Arent we morally bound to interfere? How far would you go for a good cause?

Who couldve foreseen that one day Id be making a Werewolf: The Apocalypse game? And to think it all started with me being bit by a dog. Really! It was in the 90s. I was walking back home from somewhere when a German shepherd grabbed me and tore my jeans. Its owner gave me money for a new pair. My mom stitched the pants together and I used the money to buy my first Werewolf: The Apocalypse rulebook.
Im not the only World of Darkness fan here, by the way. Everyone at Different Tales and Walkabout Games are avid players. Piotrek, Jacek, and I used to run sessions and write scenarios (Jacek, a fan of everything dark, also dabbling with Call of Cthulhu and Kult RPG ). Our writers Joanna and Marta were Werewolf players, both tabletop and LARP. To us, creating this game is like a 20-year-old dream come true. Were excited that we got this chance to tell you a story set in the world of Werewolf: the Apocalypse, and set in Poland. You will have three resources: Rage, Willpower and Health.

Rage decides how proactive you are, but also affects your ability to understand everything around you. High rage will let you take bold decisions, but you wont see all the shades of grey of what youre doing. Play a couple of times and try role-playing as different kinds of people to see that your decisions change the way you see the world!

Discover a hidden world

In the demo, you will visit real world places located in the Bialowieza Forest, the last primeval wilderness in Europe, and face real legends. These include: The Barrows. This is a real resting place of a tribe that lived in the Puszcza 1,500 years ago and mysteriously vanished. Kazan the Wolf. The most famous wolf in Poland and the symbol of protection over his endangered species. In 2001, he died after being wounded in a fight against another male wolf. Places of Power. There are numerous legends of Places of Power located across the Puszcza. In the 1990s, diviners from around the world used to gather in the forest and search for these sites of magic.

Hi there! Im Piotr from Walkabout Games. Today is the day! We are finally revealing Werewolf: The Apocalypse - Heart of the Forest. The first preview by GamesRadar should be online by now. In a couple of hours, more media will publish their first impressions from our press demo. However, I thought that first, we should inform the people who deserve it the most: the Werewolf fans like yourself! Why not start by watching the trailer? So what is Heart of the Forest about?

Werewolf: The Apocalypse - Heart of the Forest throws you deep into a primeval wilderness in the center of modern Europe. Its where the protectors of nature wage their ancient, neverending war against the forces of destruction. You play as Maia, who comes to Poland hoping to trace her family roots. Trying to learn more about her ancestry, she will discover her familys dark secrets and reveal hidden truths about the last wilderness of Central Europe.
We decided to show real-world places of mystery and power into the game. We will also show you local legends, traditions, and the history of Polish-Belarusian borderlands. When playing through the game, you will need to mind your statistics as they determine your available choices and influence the overall presentation of every scene.
Rage is your main resource. The higher your Rage, the more go-getting and aggressive you become. However, this makes your perception quite binary, and you become unable to see all the shades of grey. Low Rage brings empathy and openness but also makes you fearful and less willing to act. Willpower is the resource you need to control yourself, and also to not get carried by your Rage. If you let it drop to zero, you wont be able to deal with many problems and situations. You gain Willpower by exploring the world, becoming better acquainted with it, and understanding it. Personality describes the kind of person you are in the game world. There are 5 auspices available, which determine the ways you can approach any character, obstacle, or situation. Early in the game, your personality will be shaped by your natural choices. Later on, you will have to choose your auspice and determine your true nature.

Why did we choose Puszcza Bialowieska as the setting?

The Bialowieza Forest, also known as the Puszcza or Puszcza Biaowieska, is one of the last primeval forests in Europe, located in Poland. Its a special place where nature exists in its most primal form right next to the big industry.
The Puszcza is a vast area full of myths and legends, which you will also find in our game. The first people settled here 2,000 years ago, but their presence remained relatively limited. This makes it a perfect setting for a World of Darkness story. The forest is where the wild survive in large part because of human influences, as, in the light of the changing climate, care and protection are absolutely crucial for the ecosystem. In recent years, large protests were held in the Puszcza against deforestation. This lets us ask questions that have always been relevant to Werewolf: The Apocalypse.
Where should our interference in nature end? Arent we morally bound to interfere? How far would you go for a good cause?

Who couldve foreseen that one day Id be making a Werewolf: The Apocalypse game? And to think it all started with me being bit by a dog. Really! It was in the 90s. I was walking back home from somewhere when a German shepherd grabbed me and tore my jeans. Its owner gave me money for a new pair. My mom stitched the pants together and I used the money to buy my first Werewolf: The Apocalypse rulebook.
Im not the only World of Darkness fan here, by the way. Everyone at Different Tales and Walkabout Games are avid players. Piotrek, Jacek, and I used to run sessions and write scenarios (Jacek, a fan of everything dark, also dabbling with Call of Cthulhu and Kult RPG ). Our writers Joanna and Marta were Werewolf players, both tabletop and LARP. To us, creating this game is like a 20-year-old dream come true. Were excited that we got this chance to tell you a story set in the world of Werewolf: the Apocalypse, and set in Poland. We believe that we have more than enough incredible stories and legends worth showcasing in our beloved universe. Id like to also stress out that your opinion matters.
