Halloween In The Skies

Halloween has come to Skyhook with the biggest update yet! Fight with grappling hooks with a new set of spooky skins and quests.

Gamepad Support


The gamepad system in Skyhook has been completely revamped, allowing for a larger list of supported controllers across PC, Mac, and Linux, included the most requested GameCube controller!

Update #18 - Better Gamepad Support Fixes

Gamepad Support


The gamepad system in Skyhook has been completely revamped, allowing for a larger list of supported controllers across PC, Mac, and Linux, included the most requested GameCube controller!

Before we talk about the update, quick reminder that SKYHOOK LEAVES EARLY ACCESS ON MAY 17th!!! Thats only two days away! Holy cat pirates! When a player has double jump, a small cloud will now appear below them to indicate this ability. You get double jump with the Super Boots powerup, and when holding the Sky Ball.

Changes


  • Hero skins now have various trophy requirements.
  • Made all menus wrap.
  • Stone platforms in Magma Cove now have lighting affected by the lava.
  • Increased match counts to unlock Frostguard and Grimlock.
  • Flying Dutchman stage cant be unlocked until Grimlock is unlocked.
  • Added support to map gamepad triggers in custom controls.
  • If a new gamepad presses start, it will replace a box occupied by a CPU player.
  • The gryphon now has an indicator showing which way it is aiming.

Fixed


  • Fixed AI standing still when unable to reach its target.
  • Redid Tombs backgrounds to fix sprite bleeding issue.
  • Fixed hook not always attaching to corpses in the right place.
  • Fixed player join screen boxes not aligning properly in Quest mode.

Warning: Save files have been moved. In order to fix an issue with new game updates overriding your saved data, saved data has been moved to a different folder. Your old saved Data should still be located at /Skyhook/Saves Dir, so you can copy it over. New saves directories are Windows: C:/Users//AppData/LocalLow/Megastorm Games/Skyhook/SavesDir/ Mac: /Users/Admin/Library/Application Support/Megastorm Games/Skyhook/SavesDir/

Update #15 - The Flying Dutchman



Legend tells of a sky ship crewed by the damned souls of haunted sky pirates, captained by its merciless crab leader. With the arrival of Grimlock, the Flying Dutchman has docked off the shores of Kingsfall. Battle across 4 new Versus maps on the tiny platforms of the Dutchman and challenge yourself with 3 new quests atop the ghost ship.
SkyBall matches are now played within a set time limit. If by the end of the time limit both teams have a tied score, the game will go into a sudden death overtime, where the first team to score wins!
Ball Hog, Pacifist, MVP, and Alley-Oop. Play to find out how to earn them!

Changes


  • New single player quests.
  • Balances trophy tiers on all quests.
  • Frostguard and the Gryphon powerup is now locked by default and must be unlocked.
  • Increase movement speed for the Gryphon and Airship.
  • New swamplands versus map.
  • Feline Frenzy now involves killing a Jade bot with 9 lives.
  • Timer on quests will not start until all bots have finished spawning.
  • Added Esc key as an option for pausing the game when using Keyboard.
  • Removed jump SFX.
  • Disconnecting or reconnecting a gamepad on the main menu will now return you to character

New to the skies? Prepare for battle with Quest Mode, where you take on challenges like target practice, battle against AI, or run from the rising lava. Already a pro? See if you can earn a Diamond trophy with insane speed runs. The first version of Quest Mode included 12 challenges to test your grappling hook skills.
The first major Hero Skin is out today, Hammer Fin, a totally new skin option for Fin. You’ll have to unlock this adorable little guy in Quest Mode!
All the Pink hero skins are now locked by default and need to be unlocked in Quest Mode.

Twitch Integration Menu


The twitch integration has been updates to allow you to connect your bot to Skyhook so that it can chat to your viewers about what is going on. You can also set how long you want countdowns to be and how long chat messages should be delayed.

Changes


  • SkyBall now uses Time in minutes to end the match. Timer displays on screen during the match, and when it ends the team with a higher score wins.
  • Player holding the SkyBall can now double jump.
  • Updated Twitch integration to include new AWS servers and old servers.
  • HUD elements like player hearts fade out when a player goes behind them.
  • Increased loading time to launch game.
  • CPU players will auto select their teams when going to the Team menu.
  • Black Hero skins have been removed so that they can be redone.
  • Camera blur effect for menus.
  • Toggling fullscreen will now switch the game’s resolution to 720p.
  • Player hearts now disappear during the Mirror powerup.
  • Inverse black colored skins have been removed while I make them more awesome.

Fixed


  • Fixed bug with SkyBall and Swag steal stat not working.
  • Fixed bug with triggers not working.
  • Fixed bug with wallslide sfx playing even when a player isn’t moving.

Update #13.5 - Valentine's Day Skins!



Our heroes (and crab villains) are ready to hook their loved ones in the face this weekend! These special pink and blank character skins will actually be a permanent addition to the game after Valentine's Day! If playing as a pink Fin is all you every wanted, then you’re just like me :D

  • Improved AI ability to climb up through platforms.
  • Jade's alternate green skin changed to have a black top with green pants. (She kinda looks like Little Mac?)

  • Fixed bug with twitch connections not working.
  • Fixed bug with twitch connections crashing the Main Menu.
  • Fixed bug with the wrong player getting the winner trophy.
  • Fixed bug with ball getting stuck when pass target dies.

Update #13 - New Character! Grimlock, The Crab Captain




Dark sails have risen over the horizon, and with it the Crab Captain has emerged! Grimlock swings into battle today as the 5th playable character in Skyhook! You’ll have to unlock him in order to hook your friends with his big meaty claws!
You can now connect Skyhook with your twitch account and play against your viewers while streaming! Fight bots named after viewers and allow the chat to vote for what powerups everyone gets! Here's a short video of what that looks like! https://youtu.be/v2kQ43Aq-ms

  • Camera will now track a player’s goal if they have the ball and are near their own goal.
  • Improvements to camera tracking, zooming, and shaking.

Update #12.5 - Camera Hotfix

Hi everyone! A number of players requested an option to turn off the new dynamic camera, so I've included it in a hot fix for this week. I'll be trying to smooth out and improve the camera over the next week, so please try it again in the future sometime if you turn it off :)
I've also fixed several bugs with customizing keyboard input. You can now use the spacebar, and there should no longer be any issues saving the changes to melee keys.

Update #12 - Melee Combat!?!?



Melee Combat! There’s a new way to kill your enemies, like slashing them in the face as Jade or chomping their face off as Fin! Melee makes close combat scenarios much more interesting now. And yes, you can chomp incoming hooks to deflect them.
With the introduction of the melee mechanic, I was also able to use it as a pass button in Sky Ball mode. If you have the ball perform a melee attack to pass the ball to your teammate!

New moving and zooming camera to focus on the action! You’re sky battles have never been more epic.

Changes


New screen effect for slow motion powerup. New screenshake More polish on menu animations. Showing special game over stats for Sky Ball. Updated to Unity 5.3 For everyone dealing with input issues, I have updated XInput to address most of the controller issues on Windows 7, 8, and 10. Fixed issues with keyboard keys sticking on Linux. Major improvement to player AI. New Sky Ball trophies: Longest Shot, Longest Pass, and Most Assists. Adjusted Lava height and Sky Ball spawn points in Magma Cove. Update #11 - Sky Ball Season!



Hold onto your grappling hooks ladies and gentlemen, because it’s officially Sky Ball season! Sky Ball is the most popular sport in the world of Skyhook, where two teams battle it out to throw the ball into the other team’s goal. There are no fouls or red cards in this sport, hook the other team to their death, grab the sky ball, and swing towards the goal.

With the introduction of Sky Ball, I wanted to take the time to make it so that you could play team matches in any of the game modes. Team Deathmatch is no longer one of the options, instead you can play Deathmatch, Steam Tank and Sky Slayers as a team! On top of that, the new team selection menu allows you to choose teams for bots too! There are no more limitations on what modes you can and cannot play with bots.

Changes


  • Increased player movement speed.
  • All character now have the same movement speed.
  • Decreased respawn time by 1 second.
  • Gryphons will no longer disappear when a player jumps or dodges off of them. They will stay on screen until their timer runs out.
  • New 2d shadow system for players, items, and mounts.
  • AI will not go for powerups it already has.
  • Improved flight path navigation for bots on mounts.
  • Decreased bot’s ability to dodge and increased their chance to attack players.
  • Overall improvements to AI players.
  • Added hover effect to player tokens.
  • Climbing up and down through platforms will kill during Deadly Dodge mutator.

  • Update #10 - Holidays in the Sky

    We have a minor update this week, mostly addressing some bugs, and some holiday cheer for the next couple of months.

    Holiday Skins for your favorite Skyhook characters!



    For a limited time you can access Holiday themed skins for all the characters. Change your skin by going to the outfit chest in the character selection screen.

    Changes


    • Added 6 frame input compensation. This means that if you try to jump, shoot, or dodge when you normally aren't able, the game will compensate and try again for 6 frames. This should help increase responsiveness when playing.
    • Screenshake option has been added. Set to Off, Normal, or Max.
    • Added controls view hud to Ship Log and fixed input sensitivity in Ship Log.
    • Decreased chance of Mask powerups.
    • Increased chance of Invisibility powerup in Tombs.

    Fixes


    • Fixed bug with being able to hook onto treasure chests while they were spawning
    • Fix for XInput controllers being detected as duplicates in Windows 10.
    • Fixed bug with gryphons not rendering properly.

    Update #9 - Special Match Options Character Masks



    Looking for ways to spice up your Skyhook life? Look no further! You can now add special rules to each match, like enabling Double Jump, having endless Berserk Powerups, and play in endless Slow Motion! My favorite option is Deadly Dodges, where you can use your Dodge as an attack to kill other players. You can also disable powerups.

    Unlike the Mirror powerup, which will confuse your enemies by turning them into you, the new Mask powerup will grant you the look and abilities of one of the other Skyhook characters. Temporarily teleport as Anara or dive into the ground as Fin.

    Other Features


    • Swamplands and Magma Cove can now be played with CPU players!

    Changes


    • Improved AI for Capture The Swag mode.
    • Improved flying AI for bots on flying mounts.
    • Glow effect and rumble to indicate when you are being transformed into another character.
    • Player holding the Swag will now be slowed by 80% movement speed.
    • Rumble added to interactions in Capture The Swag.
    • Changed default keyboard keys to be W,E, and R.
    • Menu navigation buttons will now show on the bottom of most menu screens.
    • Improved initial loading time for game.

    Fixes


    • Fixed bug with stage name overflowing on World Map.

    Update #8 - Magma Cove

    A new stage has been added to the world map, the Magma Cove. Along with a brand new game mode where you fight over a bag of swag!

    Tread carefully in the Magma Cove, the new stage with a rising lava floor that you really don’t want to dip your feet in. Use the hanging chains to grapple onto or escape your enemies. Magma Cove is currently only available for matches without CPU players.

    Each stage drops one bag of swag for everyone to fight over. Whoever holds it the longest wins the match! Use your hooks to steal the swag for each other. Watch out though, if you try to dodge, you’ll drop the swag!

    Features


    • Updated Input Manager to support even more gamepads.
    • New Match Trophies: Ghost Ship Beast Tamer Beast Hunter Beast Master See what they are in the Ship Log once you’ve unlocked them!

    Changes


    • CPU players will auto join in the character selection screen if there are one or less gamepads connected.
    • Two player keyboard support has been removed due to issues with multiple keyboard inputs not being detected. If you preferred two player keyboard support please let me know in the comments so I can work on adding proper support for it.
    • Adjusted all stage tiles to be pixel perfect.
    • Increased screen shake across the board.
    • Rumble on killing an enemy.
    • Added small light effects to chests, powerups, and mounts.
    • Lower out of bound triggers on each stage.

    • Fixed bug with hook clashing not working.
    • Fixed bug with picking up CPU tokens once a cursor is set to CPU.

    Update #7 - Skies of Frostguard


    This week I'm excited to bring you the first new stage since Skyhook launched on Early Access, Frostguard! With it comes a whole new type of powerup, mounts that you can ride for a short amount of time, and better AI to play against. Take a look!

    Features




    Venture to the frozen skies of Frostguard, the home of Runa and the Sky Vikings of the north.

    Watch for the newest power up and mount, the Gryphons of Frostguard! Hatching one of their eggs will grant you a temporary Gryphon mount to electrify your enemies out of the sky.

    Changes


    • Thicker team mode outlines on sprites.
    • Hearts, ropes, trails, and other color coded elements will match player’s team color.
    • Most sound effects will now play at slightly random pitches to add variation.
    • No trail effect when invisible.
    • Cursor will automatically hide for CPU players.
    • Improved bot behavior and added more realistic bot input simulation.

    Update #6 - A New Era

    We've got a lot of new features to talk about this week, from the addition of CPU players to the revamp of the character selection screen and more! Let's jump right in:
    Fight against CPU controlled players, with Easy, Normal, and Hard options

    Newly revamped character selection screen to support CPU player selection. Use a cursor to select your character, assign CPU players, and choose difficulties.

    Change your character’s skin using the Outfit Chest

    Taunt button. Press the L Bumper by default on gamepads to laugh in your enemies’ faces.
    Fight to be the first player to achieve the target number of kills, but lose points for dieing. With the addition of character skins, Team Deathmatch will now use an outline on your character to show you what team you’re on.

    Gameplay Balance


    • Powerups are no longer endless. They will automatically end after a timer if you don’t die.
    • Hitbox for shield powerup fixed to align more with the sprite.
    • Hooks that have clashed will not grapple on the way back to their owner.
    • Sudden Death powerups will now stack, and be replaced if someone else picks up the same powerup.

    Character Balance


    • Runa now has a higher jump than the other characters.
    • Runa has no stun delay after dodging.
    • Jade’s ground dodge will automatically stop if she reaches the edge of a platform.
    • New dodge animations for Jade and Fin.
    • Jade now moves the fastest.
    • Fin moves the slowest.

    Changes


    • Pressing the dodge button will now make you dodge in place. You must give directional input to dodge in a specific direction.
    • Parrying has been removed while we work out some balance issues.
    • Bigger and more dynamic explosions.
    • Hook clashes will knock back any player’s caught near it.
    • Smoke effect to easily track knocked back players.
    • Dodging now turns your character white instead of turning it dark.
    • Invincibility now flashes your character white instead of clear.

    Bugs


    • Fixed bug with sudden death powerup not finding a target.
    • Fixed bug with sudden death powerup timer during 4 player matches.
    • Fixed bugs with controller disconnection messages in the main menu.
    • Fixed bug with custom controller mappings not working after controller has been reconnected.
    • Fixed Random option never selecting the Tombs.
    • Fixed bug with World Map not defaulting to Random when returning from a Random match.
    • Fixed bug with force applied to hooked teammates.
    • Fixed bug with not being able to cancel the Credits.
    • Fixed bug with hook extending distance being inconsistent.

    Update #5 - Winds of Change

    Today we're introducing one of the biggest changes to the game thus far. The characters are no longer exactly the same! Each character now has a different type of dodge move. In addition to that, all characters have the ability to perform a parry, which deflects hooks, by dodging downwards while standing. With these changes and more to come, we hope to add some more depth and challenge to Skyhook, while keeping its accessibility. This is a big change for us, so we'd love to hear what you think!     Dodging


    • Anara disappears and reappears at the end of her dodge, making her unpredictable and scary as hell to fight.
    • Fin can control his direction while dodging on the ground and cancel his dodge. Be careful though, his air dodge is not nearly as powerful.
    • Runa has the most balanced dodge, it resembles the original dodge mechanic the most.
    • Jade has the fastest dodge, and quickly changes directions onces its over.

    Parrying


    • Parry enemy hooks by doding downwards while standing, sending their hook flying back to them.

    Other Features


    • Random option in character selection.

    Changes


    • Explosions are now a lot bigger and a bit more dynamic.
    • Powerups and chest now light up.
    • Increased fast fall speed.

    Fixes


    • Fixed bug with ghosts not interacting with hooks properly.
    • Fixed bug with dead bodies getting stuck on edges

    Update #4 - The Berserker

    We're very excited to bring you Skyhook Update #4! You'll find the game is a lot faster now with more emphasis on quick reaction times and slick shots, along with a bunch of new features! Full changes below:

    Features


    • New Power Up: The Berserker Helmet - increases your movement speed, hooking speed, and jump power.
    • Hooks will now clash when they collide with your enemy's hook
    • New Tombs stage.
    • Gameplay speed and gravity has been increased.
    • Player’s will now show which direction they’re aiming.
    • Improved pathfinding for AI bots.

    Changes


    • Invisibility now lasts until the player dies.
    • Shield now lasts until the player is hit once. It then breaks and grants some invincibility frames.

    • Onion skin effect now shows during Slow Motion powerup.

    • Fixed flickering issue when moving on a ship.
    • Fixed bug where cannonballs would explode when passing through a player’s heart icons.
    • Fixed bug where gamepads would get stuck vibrating after player left the join screen.

    • Fixed bug where player would wallslide upwards when pressing the jump button in a corner.

    Anara - Princess of the Sin



    Once the heir to the throne of Kalraan, Anara was driven out of her home as a child when the kingdom, and her parents were taken from her. Growing up in the harsh deserts of Araak, Anara has since become known as one of the world's deadliest assassins. She hunts for the treasure that will finally help her reclaim the land that was taken from her.

    Dodge Ability

    When dodging, Anara will disappear and only reappear once she has reached the end of her dodge, making her movements extremely unpredictable.

    Fin - The Storm Eater



    Known better as "Fin, The Storm Eater", Fin's reputation of being a merciless sky pirate is known around the world. He wanders the skies in search of the fabled Ghost Ship and its secrets of immortality.

    Dodge Ability

    When dodging on the ground Fin will dive beneath the earth, with the ability to change direction and end his dodge at will. While powerful on the ground, Fin can only dodge a short distance in the air.

    Runa - The Frost Slayer



    At the age of four Runa was known to wrestle with mountain lions in the great sky mountains of the Viking clans. After the great serpent Midgard destroyed the Viking capital of Frostgaurd, Runa took it upon herself to search for the treasure that could defeat the serpent and avenge the family she lost.

    Dodge Ability

    Runa can dodge roll evenly on ground and in air, with no stun delay, giving her the ability to immediately strike after dodging.

    Jade - Last of the Sabre



    Jade grew up with nothing in the streets of XianYu, where she promised herself that since the world gave her nothing, she would take everything it has to offer. As soon as she was old enough (or so the captain believed) Jade joined a crew to take to the skies and seek out the world's greatest treasures. Now she's wanted in over 20 countries with a bounty of over ten thousand gold pieces.

    Dodge Ability

    With a lightning fast dodge both on the ground and in the air, Jade will do a quick strafe and change direction as soon as her dodge ends to surprise her enemies from behind.

    Grimlock - The Crab Captain



    Grimlock’s past is mostly a mystery. What little is known about him is that he is Captain of the ship Scythe, serving the Skull Queen by collecting souls for her undead army. Some say that he sold his soul to the Queen in an effort to win her love and that is why he is bound to the Scythe. He is merciless, fearless, and has a thirst for human and sabre flesh. He hates fish though. He rules the sea with his claw-like Skyhook, seeking out new souls for the army of the damned.

    Dodge Ability

    Grimlock tucks into his hermit shell, deflecting any hooks and melee attacks that may come his way. If you're trying to attack a hooked Grimlock you'll find yourself pretty vulnerable when your hook gets knocked away!


    • Is there controller support?
      Yes, Skyhook has full controller support, and is compatible with most standard gamepads including Xbox and Playstation controllers.

    • Will there be online multiplayer?
      The game is currently local co-op only, and can be played single player against AI. There are currently no plans to add online multiplayer.

    • How big is the development team?
      The game is made mostly by one person, Wase Qazi, who handles all the design, pixel art, and programming. Julian Shanahan is responsible for the music and Katherine Murray is responsible for the illustrations.

    • Will the game support other languages?
      I'd love to support more languages. Let me know in the Discussion boards which languages you'd like to see!
