Canal system in development

Ive added canals and bridges. At least, the pixel art exists and the logic for constructing canals is somewhat established. The idea is to have fountains as endpoints for the canals, which will be the places where farmers can fill up on water for watering their plants.

Check out a part of the development in this video.

First animal added

Roads and animals for Power of the Ancients, thats right. Since last update I programmed a functional UI for dropping down roads on the map.

In addition, the graphics for the roads have been updated as well. I have probably redone those pixel graphics ten times, but now I am satisfied with the result.

Then I started pixeling a hippo, because this game definitely needed more hippo. I recorded a timelapse of the drawing of this animal.

The music you hear in the background will eventually be the music for the main menu. All other music in this isometric city builder will have a similar atmosphere. We are aiming at something relaxed and calm.

After having drawn something vaguely resembling a hippo, there was of course the task of programming the actual behaviour of the hippo.

He is not very smart yet, but in the future I aim for the hippo to prefer hanging around the water. During the day it is very likely the hippo will go for a bath now and then. During the night he/she will sleep on the shores.

In addition to this, if any person comes too close to the hippo, it will attack. You can see the attack animation at the end of the timelapse video.

Apart from roads and animals for Power of the Ancients, I have programmed a way to load and save the state of the game. Not a very sexy thing to report, but it is basic required functionality for a city builder game like this one, so hey, now it exists.

Four pyramids pixeling and other news

[previewyoutube=6ro_s1gwnxg;full][/previewyoutube]

Today i made some pyramids for peaceful city builder Power of the Ancients. Here is a video of me drawing them. These are the four pyramids the peaceful city building game will have in addition to the main central pyramid.

All four pyramids represent one of the four elements, which in turn represent four peoples. The farmers will build their homes nearby the earth pyramid. The fishermen will build their buildings nearby the water pyramid. The fire people / guards will build their barracks nearby the fire pyramid. Lastly, the magicians / air people will build their dwellings nearby the air pyramid.

The water and fire will need to be animated still.

In addition to this, progress has been ongoing. Almost all behaviour of the farmers and fishermen is now completely programmed into the game.

Work has been progressing in the music and sound effects department as well. The main menu, which still has to be programmed, already has its own lo-fi track. We are very happy with this and are looking forward to the upcoming tunes to be composed in the future.

I have also toyed with the idea of adding a few animals to the environment, since it is currently a bit static. In additions to this, moving trees and so on will help to construct a more alive city builder game experience. I might even try to animate the grass, but Im not sure about that one.

Future devlog updates will include more information on the games economy, and the behaviour of the other people in the game. The pyramids for peaceful city builder Power of the Ancients I made today will need some behaviour programmed into them as well. This, however will be connected to setting up some kind of economy gameplay.
