Almost exactly one year since Retro Tank Party v1.0 was released, we have the 3rd major update!
Here's the highlights:
- Three new art styles by Ross Klettke from Whatnotory! You can select the art style in the game Settings before entering a match. I love them all - it's like playing a brand new game :-)
- Updated to the latest version of the Godot Rollback Netcode addon and SG Physics 2D. There have been LOADS of wonderful contributions from the Open Source community since we released the first alpha versions of these components, and I'm super happy to be able to showcase them here in Retro Tank Party!
- A few small bug fixes. Not even worth getting into the details!

[previewyoutube=HPDN8sTHMiA;full][/previewyoutube] After about 6 months of intense development, the biggest update EVER for Retro Tank Party is here! Here's the highlights:
- Completely rewritten netcode using rollback! This form of network synchronization is most commonly using in competitive fighting games, and should provide a more accurate and fair online experience. I'm planning to release the code of this netcode as an Open Source asset in the Godot asset library, and will be making a series of tutorial videos soon.
- Completely rewritten physics using a custom deterministic physics engine. I've already released the physics engine as Open Source (MIT license) - you can find a tutorial here.

[previewyoutube=i46CX5YVRfg;full][/previewyoutube] After about two months of development, the first major update patch for Retro Tank Party is here! Here's the highlights:
- Four new powerups: one new weapon and three new abilities. See below!
- Team mode available in both "Battle Royale" and "Deathmatch" when playing with 3-4 players. You can setup 2v2, 1v2 or 1v3 matches.
- A new "Modern" control scheme to go along with the classic "Retro" scheme. New players will get the "Modern" controls by default, and existing players can select it from the settings screen. This should be a little more familiar to players who didn't grow up playing the Atari 2600. :-)
- Gameplay improvements to "Deathmatch" mode:
- Players respawn in random locations, so players can't camp in a predictable spot and get cheap kills.
- Weapon powerups can optionally timeout, preventing one player from getting a sweet powerup early on and dominating the whole match.
- Numerous little bug fixes.
The new powerups!
Now, for what you really wanted to see...
Railgun [R]
It's now the weapon with the longest range, fastest speed, and it ricochets off some obstacles. Careful not to shoot yourself, though!
Zap! [Z]
Teleport away from danger or gamble at appearing just where you need to be. This one is my favorite ability powerup :-)
Invisible \[I\]
Get the jump on your opponents by turning invisible. Shooting, collecting a powerup or getting hit will make you momentarily visible.
Boost \[B\]
Catch your opponent or flee in the nick of time with a short speed boost.
Happy Hunting!
This is the first update patch, but not the last! The next one is already in the works, and I've got ideas for the next couple after that. :-) Enjoy!

It's my birthday, and I'll launch a game if I want to. :-) "Retro Tank Party" is releasing on Steam on April 20th, 2021. Join the stream to chat, celebrate the release and play a few rounds of them game together with the developer (David Snopek, that's me!). See ya there!
