A big thank you to everyone who participated in our most recent playtest. We have received a lot of great feedback, more than we can action in the next major update.
To help us focus on development we will be shutting down the public playtest servers and disabling the Steam playtest feature.
At this point in time we don't know when the next major update or playtest will be. When we figure it all out we'll let you know; please keep an eye out for future announcements.
In the interest of testing some PvP action, we have just released our first attempt at an Arena mod for Deepfield. You can hop into the Arena via the "Join" menu; just like the standard playtest servers, there is an Arena server for each of the 3 major regions (AU, EU, USA). Changes from the standard game: - Single sector (no jump mechanic) - Sector size increased to 384x384 (up from 128x128) - You now start with 1000 Lipid and Amino (up from 20 Lipid, 800 Amino) - Tutorial has been disabled - Resources now respawn in a random location when consumed - All Amino resources have a starting value of 500 - All Lipid resources have a starting value of 200 - There are 2 neutral capital baddies floating around, they will respawn in a random location when killed - Various AI tweaks - No spawn safety! You might spawn close to another player or some neutral units, be prepared - You get an extra phage when you spawn in - Arrangement of newly spawned units is more tightly clustered If you die or want to restart, hit "Surrender" in the universe screen (default hotkey "P").
Tutorial
Deepfield has some pretty unique core concepts and mechanics; it's about time we explain some of these things to you. If you're dropping into a universe for the first time, you will be presented with a short tutorial which will teach you the basics of Deepfield. We have tried to keep things interesting by introducing a little lore at the same time. We really want to know how you found the tutorial so be sure to press F8 and let us know how you went!
Facelift
We have upgraded the graphics in a few areas of the game:
- New background items with added parallax effect.
- The substance which the units move around in is now affected by movement.
- Fog of war reveals smoothly and colours have been changed to make it obvious what can be seen, what has been revealed and what is unknown.
Other Improvements
- Universe button has been replaced with a sector minimap. This allows players to view adjacent sectors by clicking on the corresponding square. Universe panel can still be opened via hotkey.
- Co-ordinates of the current sector are shown above the minimap.
- Feedback button moved to the top of the screen.
- Painful sound effects (like clicking buttons) have been made less painful.
Bug Fixes
- Picking a start location on the edge would cause the game to timeout.
- The "range" stat in the unit stat panel was broken for some units.
- Custom keybinds are now saved correctly.
- Selecting small units when they are under larger ones is now possible (e.g. Phages under the Amoeba).
Onboarding
We have added a short onboarding process to the start of a new game; you will choose your race, name your faction, pick your faction colours and be able to select a starting location. Selecting your start location should make it easier to play with your friends!
Other Improvements
- Slowed down middle mouse scrolling.
- Removed exclamation mark tile from universe screen.
- Surrender confirmation dialog now prevents players from clicking "yes" more than once.
- Engine version no longer shown on the server list.
- Improvements to connection and sector change event for high ping connections (over 100ms).
Bug Fixes
- Shroud and fog of war would occasionally not show on screen.
- Crash when changing/jumping sectors.
- Feedback screenshot now includes UI elements.
New Neutrals
It's about time! The old neutral units were just a copy of the units that were available to the player, this didn't make for a very exciting universe to play in. We have removed the old neutral units and replaced them with 4 brand new units which all have unique behaviours.
A Better Universe
The old universe was a bit empty. We have tweaked the universe generation code to include more neutrals to fight with various levels of density and difficulty. We hope this makes for more exciting and engaging play!
Feedback Menu (F8)
We want to hear your thoughts and opinions! You can now submit feedback through an in-game feedback form, press F8 to get started.

Amoeba Proteus
This slow moving but robust unicellular organism is your first capital unit and marks the beginning of your species. It has a wide range of capabilities but most importantly it can store resources and use them to spawn new units.
If all of your capital units die, game over.
Sectors
The universe in Deepfield is broken up into a grid made up of multiple sectors. You won’t know what a sector contains until you explore it; some might be void, some full of resources, others inhabited by hostiles looking to exterminate any invaders.
Your capital units are key to exploring new sectors, they are the only ones capable of moving from sector to sector.
Mutations
It’s an expensive and lengthy process but your capital units can be improved by mutating.
Mutations can change a wide variety of things. They can unlock new units to build, modify a capital unit’s capabilities, boost stats and more.
Persistent Universe & Mass Multiplayer
The universes in Deepfield are persistent and shared between many players. This means you’re not the only one trying to survive, however, not everyone has to be your enemy.Diplomacy is fluid. How you interact with others is entirely up to you; you can attempt to crush everyone you meet, create long-lasting alliances or cooperate until it’s no longer convenient.
