Hey! Jan here. I'm the solo designer and programmer of Pawnbarian. Pawnbarian is a chess-inspired, card-flinging, dungeon-crawling, puzzle rogue-like. That's a bit of a mouthful, but it's actually a simple game, just blending a bunch of ideas in a unique way! Simple doesn't mean easy, though. Much like the venerable game of chess, Pawnbarian will have you thinking through complex situations emerging from its simple rules. A knowledge of chess is helpful to get started, but it isn't necessary by any means. Rather than talk about it any more, I encourage you to try out the demo - it's very much a pick-up-and-play kind of game. You'll be mulling over how to most efficiently kill eldritch abominations after a 3 minute tutorial. Pawnbarian was originally a tiny proof-of-concept made for the 7 Day Rogue-Like game jam, and ever since then player input has been absolutely invaluable in shaping the game through its many demo versions. I'd love to hear your thoughts if you do give this Steam version a try.

What Pawnbarian is not
Pawnbarian is not a full-fledged roguelike with deep and varied builds to explore. There is a bit of progression over the course of a run, but the core of the game is dealing with a variety of enemies, and figuring out what to do each turn.
Think of it as a highly replayable puzzle game with a roguelike card battler feel.
