v1.29: AI fixes and engine update

I've made some changes to AI processing that should address NPC pathfinding. This should fix the issue related to completing "Escort" quests, among other "followers are not following" AI issues.

This also brings 8089 up to the latest Focus Engine v4.13.7 build.

Note that I am still building Linux binaries, but I've heard reports that using Proton with the Windows binaries provides better compatibility.

v1.27.1: Fix world consistency & load times

Fixed a bug that caused different worlds to be generated between save & load cycles. This also caused slow load times, as the game would have to find a proper place to spawn you in the changing world. Now backup locations and world generation should be consistent across saves. I also made adjustments to enemy spawns, so they should be more consistent between game saves too.

v1.27: Improved explosion + fog effects & more


  • Fog has been redesigned to match the horizon better and start at certain distances based on weather patterns
  • Explosion particle effects have been adjusted and includes new textures
  • Focus Engine updated to v4.3, which includes better gamepad support (8089 isn't designed to use a gamepad, but you should now be able to map some input to a gamepad)

    v1.23: Vehicle updates & Gun Energy balancing


    • Vehicles that run out of charge will no longer explode, they will instead be disabled until they are recharged via a Recharge Station or despawn due to distance from the player
    • Taking damage or being stunned on a vehicle will not cause it to explode; it will instead be disabled for about 20 seconds
    • Gun energy use decreased by 20% across the board. This will not change existing guns in saved games, but will be seen on newly generated gun modules
    • Trying to use a Spawn Activator on an already-activated Spawner of the same level & color will result in an error message instead of consuming the item


    I hope things feel quite balanced and stable at this point. I know 8089 may not be perfect, but I hope it has a special charm that you can enjoy & recommend! Thank you to all my supports who helped me get this game to where it is today.

    v1.22: Better early game help & fixes


    • Increased reminders to players trying to find Spawn Activators (they only are given as quest rewards from bases if you don't have one already)
    • Fixed a bug that caused new players to not get starting cash if they broke open crates at a certain time (weird, I know!)
    • If the player misses getting starting credits (maybe because you progressed the storyline before completing the tutorial), NPCs will still try and get the money to you in certain situations
    • Tweaked the starting dialog to be a bit more clear on your starting task & to look for NPCs in buildings if having trouble finding any

    I hope this will help resolve a few lingering confusions & further ease new players into the game properly. Thank you again to all your support and those who leave recommendations!

    v1.21: Major Graphics Update!


    • Added Graphics options via the Main Menu Options. You can go from "Potato" mode that disables all effects, to adding Flashy Lights (the new default) & extending the draw distance. VR mode has flashy lights disabled by default, but try adding it to see if your rig can handle it!
    • Added special dynamic light effects. Shooting, beams and explosions will light things up! Your lightsaber will glow and beam weapons will slowly brighten
    • Lightning strikes will now recharge your energy if you get struck
    • Removed particle generation when player gets hit by beams, which was excessive
    • Reverted changes to quest spawns that tried to avoid making the player turn around, which inadvertently caused delays in spawning targets or worse

    v1.20: Bugfixes & Balancing


    • Fixed a bug that caused health packs to not accurately display how much health they would heal based on your Consumables skill
    • Slowed down the rate you heal from health packs to a constant 2% per second
    • Added a 15 second cooldown to reusing the Bullet Time ability
    • Quests will no longer fail if a target gets killed by something else (it will just be replaced)
    • Fixed a bug that caused meteors to not damage the player or other targets properly

    v1.17: Important Fixes & Streaming Offer

    089 has been update to v1.17!


    • Fixed spawnpoints in large towers with leaders at the top (this should fix floating turrets, for example)
    • Fixed grappling hook from breaking when used in unusual situations, like hooking to abducted NPCs
    • Fixed quest rewards from not providing Spawn Activators when you already had one, just not the color you wanted (Activators will still be restricted as rewards if you have the same type & level already)
    • Made audio changes to hopefully address occasional stuttering & resolve very rare related crashes

    v1.16: VR Streaming, quest fixes & more!

    • VR Mirror is now just the left eye, which should make streaming better (the Streaming window is also better named now for easier OBS picking)
    • Protect targets should be ignored better now until the quest starts with you in range (so they don't die early)
    • Fixed a bug that caused some enemy beams to heal & recharge shields for the player
    • Added Class descriptions when starting a new character
    • Changed the font on the Bomb Diffuse Quest screen to be easier to read
    • Fixed materials on station bases not being affected by fog

    8089 v1.15: More Options!

    Here is a quick update to deliver some popular requested options!

  • VR Smooth Turning: set this via Options. The speed at which you turn is based on how far you push the axis
  • 45 Degree Snap Turn: Snap turning has been reduced from 90 degrees to 45 degrees
  • Crosshair Aim: If you want a crosshair instead of a laser pointer, you can now pick it in Options. Note that the crosshair may be less accurate at very close ranges
  • Invert Y: Now this exists!
  • VR Mirror Option: I'll be adding a launch option that uses the "mirror" argument, which will enable VR mirroring which is useful for streaming. It shows both eyes, because that is how the texture is generated and further manipulation may degrade performance

    I'm monitoring some other minor bugs like occasional music skips and odd turret spawns in big tower interiors for future updates.

    Release Day Summary & Upcoming Update

    It has been a good release day & I hope you are enjoying the game! I've gotten some feedback and plan on working on these things & hope to have them addressed for the next update:

    1) VR Smooth Turning Option -- I've heard you loud and clear and it is coming!
    2) Invert Y Mouse Option
    3) Option for a crosshair instead of a laser pointer
    4) Turrets spawning oddly in towers
