The very reason you dislike qtile (having all screens share the workspaces) is why I love it. I'm so happy we have so many great choices on Linux and people can pick and choose their favorite without compromising!

This looks like an interesting tiling wm for many kinds of people, but I agree that I also am not the kind of person who would like this. i3wm is just perfect for me.

Reminds me a lot of DWM in the way it works, which I used for a long time. Cool video!

Ah, it's a secret... Not really. It's a one line script that calls focuswm application and passes the output to xkill.

Budrick on ytube has a script that works in a similar way for i3 but seems a bit fiddly to set up. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t4Tve-xpwus&t=1165s

What would put me off a python driven wm is not speed but memory usage.

wm are there for those who dont like bill and whistles, they just want *speed* and *speed* is something that python does not have

I'm not sure it's as much speed as it is asthetic/workflow. I didn't find qtile notibly slow. But, its a reasonable concern.

Yeah if you compare raw number crunching CPython will always be slower, but Python is intended to be Glue Code. Calling native functions in a high level way and doing the logic that doesn't need blazing speed. If you do want speed, there is also PyPy and Cython, or mixing Python and C/++.

Nice to see you try out qtile! I first came across qtile about 5 or 6 years ago and fell in love with it. It's always saddened me that so few people even know of its existence despite it being a very full-featured window manager with quite a bit of development behind it. As far as qtile feeling a bit strange compared to i3, that's normal. I found i3 to be rather alien to me. Different kinda workflows, especially the way they handle multi-monitors. Qtile handles multi-monitors in the way that xmonad handles them, which xmonad was my first tiling window manager (which is probably why I was quite comfy in qtile). And I agree, it takes some getting used to that workflow, but you get used to quickly. The more you use it, the harder it is to go back to the tiling managers that handle multi-monitors the other way (like i3). Take care.

I didn't know I wanted this behavior from my WM until you pointed out the mess I've been living in for the past year or so :-) But the advantage of having the config written in python is that it's quite easy to add the functionality you want: specific groups (or desktop) in specific monitors. Simply map the key that would bring up a given group to first change focus to the monitor you want it on. I've been trying it out and it's working great: https://gist.github.com/heitzmann/06d3e515274bc9823e4a81aa09984f20#file-config-py-L176-L178

I have been trying to resolve this behaviour over on the Githubpage. https://github.com/qtile/qtile/issues/1271 <- please do chime in if you can assist :)
