I agree. My machine has 32GiBs of DDR4 RAM(in quad channel configuration) and octacore processor. I am not sure I would even notice some performance improvement if I try to use a different DE or distro. P.S. I can always add more RAM or more processors.

I moved to Ubuntu from Windows 10 and i'm inlove with it ! My FPS has only dropped with 10 but that's nothing. The only thing that linux platforms lack is the ability to create WinForm applications...yes you can write the code, though you cannot use the GUI designer to make the window with all the buttons etc.

+jon jon goufema liames zenbin pinfen PC's are cheaper than consoles by a lot when you build something reasonable and factor in the prices of the games. Also a PC can do more, be upgraded and be repurposed at the end of its life. And this is a Linux channel. So we don't even need to pay for the OS.

SteamOS? Really? Have you personally tried it? It's a waste. With Manjaro Mate, I can play my games on Max settings. In SteamOS, The GAMING distro!, I have nothing but issues. If I set the games on max, it's buggered all to Hell. I'll stick to Manjaro Mate. Yes, everyone's mileage will vary from distro to distro. And everyone has their own preference. Anyway, keep up the great work, Hex.

I would rather use a heap of RAM than a heap of CPU time! RAM is cheap and easily expandable but CPU time can be precious in timing critical situations.

J. Stephen Gazsi lol, yeah. Because of the video and production stuff I have to use I install a LOT of stuff from the AUR. Sometimes I forget it's on there and update things in less than ideal ways. Occasionally it gets to the point where it's faster to reload systems than to fix issue. As I have everything I care about backed up on my hone server for me, I just reloaded. Arch based distro's are usually fine just don't install crazy stuff from aur and you will be fine.

Short answer: yes. Long answer: Swap is what is used when your system runs out of RAM on Linux. It's basically a file or partition that sits on your hard drive. If you wanted, you could put your swap on a USB, and leave it plugged in to your computer. https://www.centos.org/docs/5/html/5.2/Deployment_Guide/s1-swap-what-is.html

As of the last couiple of months there have been some major updates to SteamOS which while it is still very much a beta OS I can confirm that it is now officially a contender! I should say that I bought an Alienware Steam Machine which arrived on the 2nd of Jan 2017, so obviously I never had to actually install SteamOS or struggle with unsupported hardware to get my setup working. Take my advice and dual-boot Ubuntu or Mint (or Arch if you're feeling confident), I use SteamOS as my main OS and Ubuntu for all the shings SteamOS does not do. As of the last fortnight I have officially stopped using my other machines and I am very pleased with my Linux gaming rig. The only complaint I have about using Linux for gaming in 2017 is I have to take time out from my gaming activities to lay some hurt on some Windows fanboi from time to time. Usually in the form of some harsh flame type commentary, but you don't want to tell me that Windows is better if you meet me in a dark alley because those words could be your last.
