Behold, mayors,

As we promised before, the new update for Kapital: Sparks of Revolution is here! It is largely based on your feedback and focuses on both fixing the issues you've found and rebalancing the game as a whole.

Thank you once again for your ongoing support! We are still working on more updates and fixes so please, share your ideas for how to make the game even better! And if you like it already, we cannot stress enough how much a review here on Steam will help us.

But now let's get to the reason you are reading this:
Full Changelog:

Improvements:
• removed the construction queue. Now multiple buildings can be built at the same time.

 • graveyard capacity increased from 80 to 100 graves.
 • increased work time of public buildings in the evening so they can serve more visitors per day.
 • success chance of suppressing a protest with shooting was lowered (it was extremely high).
 • bourgeois now work in pharmacies instead of workers.
 • penalty to happiness for cremation of a body was increased.
 • added option to cancel cremation.
 • new hints added to basic acts.
 • report a bug information is added to Settings menu.
 • added trees icons.
 • added Continue button in the main menu, pressing it loads the last savegame.
 • improved main menu UI

Kapital: Sparks of Revolution update 1.0.2 is live!

Greetings, mayors,

Weve received a large amount of constructive criticism from you and now we are working on improving the game according to your feedback. Our ultimate goal has always been for Kapital to be a unique crisis management city builder, where players have to live through the crisis, rather than avoid it. Kapital gameplay was meant to be challenging but not frustrating. We are aiming to resolve balance issues and to provide players with quality of life improvements, while keeping high, but fair difficulty level; and this patch is just the first step, we are working on more, stay tuned!
1.0.2 update full changelog:
• Fixed an error that prevented some save games from loading
 • Trees and bushes added to the construction menu
 • The cost of producing wood was decreased by 20%, while the cost of producing steel was increased by 20% (The cost of producing bricks remains unchanged). This will slightly decrease gold consumption in the early days while increasing gold consumption later on.
 • Decreased the amount of new residents that arrive in the city early on - based on community feedback
 • Stats of new residents were increased in order to give players more time to react
 • Decreased the chance of a large crowd of new residents arriving in the early days
 • Decreased the time of constructing and upgrading buildings - this should increase the pace of the game
 • Slightly increased the amount of gold received from feeding hospital patients and prisoners. This measure will slightly decrease the amount of gold required to run the Hospital and the Prison
 • "Last Chance" quest was removed from Sandbox mode - this should give players more freedom in their actions
 • New tutorials and notifications were added
 • Tips & Tricks section was added to the main menu
 • Various other bugfixes

Thank you very much for your support! Keep playing and enjoying the game as much as possible. Join our Discord to share your thoughts, we are keen to hear them!

Kapital: Sparks of Revolution Quick Early Campaign Guide

Greetings mayors,
We realize that Kapital: Sparks of Revolution is a complex game, and it might be handy to have the basic mechanics described and at hand for reference. We have received a lot of feedback from our players already and we are working on improving the ingame tutorials as well (among many other things, such as bugfixes and improving game balance).

In the meantime, we encourage anyone who runs into trouble while governing their city, to consult the following guide. Please bear in mind that this is just a description of mechanics and basic tips and tricks, by no means is it "the best strategy" - there is no such thing in the game, and we definitely look forward to hearing about your own approach to the game, please share in the comments or come chat to our Discord.

Kapital: Sparks of Revolution
Quick Early Campaign Guide
Important info
This is a game about crisis. It is the games goal to scale the events in a way where the player faces the need to deal with some issue or other. It is very rare that you will be able to solve all of the problems at hand (mostly possible in the Normal difficulty campaign) and your goal is to clear your campaign objectives (quests) while ensuring enough stability to finish the Campaign or simply surviving as long as you can in Sandbox.
Early Campaign Techniques
We wanted to impart what the game tells you to control in order to build a successful city and production chains in the early campaign. All the sections of this guide are important for the overall gameplay as the players priorities are: solve hunger, then housing (migration), and then whatever else comes as you build up and scale your production and the city.
1. Food Production
Hunger and the Food economy
The player needs to satisfy the hunger of the population. This is the key issue and the one that will have the largest impact on the happiness of the citizens and their willingness to give their maximum for production and the administrative work in the respective buildings.

Our advice would be:

 • Use the box piles and ruins that you can find at the start of the game as a cache of supplies for the first few days as you build up your food chain. But remember, your ability to stack resources is rather limited at the start, so dismantling more ruins than you need would cause a loss of precious materials

 • The maximum priority for the player should be that grain/food isn't zero at the end of the daily work shift and that gold isn't zero at the beginning of the work shift. When they reach zero the problems begin to occur at almost exponential speed as these oversights stack up.

 • Also, use the pause button in case you need to balance your budget and your buildings are costing you too much to keep running- this helps you to scale back if necessary.

 • Have 2 working Sawmills as soon as possible- This will speed up the necessities and will allow you to upgrade the Railroad line 1 (as mentioned in Section 4, Broken Train) without having to scale up later as you need wood to ensure the smooth running of the railroad deliveries.

 • Once you notice that the single Food Factory is unable to deliver enough food to the Peg Houses, Bistros etc. then it is time to scale up and build another, which is the rule of thumb for most such scale-ups in Kapital. One Peg House and one bistro counts for very little and it is important to scale-up as the population grows. Well working food production also brings in extra gold that the player needs for expansion.

 • Try to maintain a healthy balance between the amount of grain going towards food and alcohol production with food production being much more important even when scaling the building of new factories in the early campaign.

 • Innovations research gives you significant bonuses to the varied parts of the Food production chain- more wood produced at the sawmills, less breaking down of the sawmill, more grain carried and less need for train maintenance etc. Do not underestimate their usefulness in the Early campaign.
2. Flow of Immigration
Migration Act and Migration Service
This is a very crucial piece of legislature alongside the Migration Service building. We would recommend signing it as the 2nd or 3rd Law during the campaign playthrough. It is the only tool in the game that allows you to control the influx of the immigrants, helping you to slow down or speed up the numbers you have to deal with as a player. Balanced use is key to success on higher difficulties.

 • You can use the setting of the building to slow down the number of migrants coming in, however, remember that it takes time for the game to switch the setting and a larger number than expected may arrive before the setting

 • Do not stifle the arrivals too much and experiment with what you think your city can take to ensure you just do not run out of people you need to run the buildings (especially after events such as epidemics, mass poisonings, mass shootings during riots etc.)

 • The importance of this building for your control over the pace of growth of your city cannot be overstated.
3. Gold Economy
Gold
It is essential to solve the starting gold issue as one of the earlier problems as it is connected to you being able to expand and scale-up in the mid and late game.
In the beginning, you should be fine with gold from pubs and cabarets (as these are offering the biggest income from basic buildings) - but only if you have alcohol to keep them running.
That is the reason why we would recommend approving Acts from the Economy branch as quickly as possible (with Migration, Medicine and Education Acts having preference over it).

The final Act of the branch: Wholesale Trade can be left alone for the beginning of the campaign as it only allows you to earn gold on the Burse by selling firmly set packages of various goods which is helpful in situations where your economy needs a constant influx of extra cash and you have other, more important Acts that require your approval.

 • Production and Administrative buildings- these cost gold to be run, the more upgraded the building is, the more gold you have to pour into it- make sure that the building is essential to you before you have to pay the costs for maintaining and running it.

 • Marketplace- a very useful building for the beginning as it is able to plug holes in your economy rather efficiently

 • Pharmacy- a useful building that both helps your populace in the matters of health but also earns a significant amount of gold. Make sure to diversify the allowed visitors (at the very least into Workers vs Noble and Burgeois groups) to satisfy both sides of the divide in this early economy.

 • The Stalls and Boutiques- These are the most efficient building in terms of earning gold once your population is mostly served and happy in terms of food and a bit of alcohol that your economy can provide. If your food production is stable we recommend slowly scaling up the number of these commercial buildings based on your overall income.
4. Broken Train
Given how crucial the entire production chain of food is for the stability of the city it is necessary to work well with the Railroad tab and generally make sure that the train does not break down if the player has an option to repair it before the deterioration gets out of hand. It also pays off to have at least a few resources available for unforeseen events.

 • Upgrade your train whenever possible

 • Make sure to build and upgrade your warehouses to manage any unexpected train breakages as these require often unexpected amounts of wood that the player has to spend in order to maintain his flow of grain and the food production chain intact.
5. Warehouses
These allow the player to maintain some extra supplies over the starting limit and they become especially crucial when your city gets bigger and you will try to build more advanced buildings.

 • Make sure to maintain at least 4 warehouses the moment you research them and have resources available for their building.

 • It is useful to have two pairs with different resource type preference chosen in the buildings tab. Both Provision and Materials type are necessary for all the stages of the Campaign and Sandbox.

This guide helps to understand the games basics, but it might not provide the best strategy. We encourage you all to experiment and look for their own new strategies to achieve the best results.

Balancing Kapital: Sparks of Revolution - patch coming soon!

Greetings, mayors,

Kapital has been out since yesterday and we are really thankful for your feedback so far! It helped us to find a few balancing issues and we are already working on fixing them - we will be releasing an update in the near future.

At the moment, we have renamed the difficulties to NORMAL, HARD and EXTREME, so they are more fitting for the challenge they present.
Balance improvements that will come very soon:
• Rebalancing Normal and Hard difficulty of the game. The main goal is to allow new players to explore the game without putting too much pressure on them.
 • Reduced death chance and disease chance for homeless residents. This should give the player more time to react to these problems.
 • Improved initial stats of new residents that arrive in the city during first weeks.
 • Increased Marketplace income. Marketplace doesn't require gold to operate and provides resource boost that will help to solve critical situations.

Thank you very much for your support and feedback, please keep it coming! You are most welcome to join our Discord server, so you could share your Kapital thoughts with us! See you there.

Kapital Devlog: Revolutionary economy

Hello, mayors! Lapovich Team here!

The world is not fair. Warehouses and shops are littered with food, while hungry and beggars stalk the streets nearby. Food production itself doesn't lead to an increase in well-being. It all depends on the distribution of the produced resources. Some will get the cream, while others will only crumble from the master's table. And this state of affairs doesn't surprise anyone. Human society is heterogeneous and hierarchical. How about creating an economic strategy game focused on the interaction between economy and social structure? This is how we came up with the idea of creating Kapital: Sparks of Revolution.

The action takes place in a European state during the early 20th century. The Great War has ended, leaving behind smoking ruins and shattered lives. You are the newly elected mayor of the destroyed city. Your goal is to restore the destroyed infrastructure, improve the economy, and provide residents with a decent life. However, the population in your town consists of 3 classes: nobles, bourgeois, and workers. Each class has a unique role in the city economy. Their vision of the future is very different, and they are ready to fight for it. You are the one to make the right choice.

Today's dev blog is about the game's economic model. At first, we wanted to create a highly detailed, realistic economy where the wealth of each citizen could dynamically change depending on the player's actions. In the first prototype, every citizen could earn and spend money during the day. Each person could get rich or become a beggar, while his needs depended on his social status. However, the system with so many details turned out to be unmanageable. The requirements of hundreds of residents need to be monitored in real-time. However, Kapital's main feature was the class struggle. Instead of overloading the game with statistics screens, we abandoned microeconomics.

This decision proved to be a good one. The new prototype with a simplified economy was met with positive feedback from players. Although the workers stopped receiving daily salaries, the player still needs to pay maintenance costs for plants and public buildings. This requires a lot of gold. Gold became the bloodstream of the economy. Without it, the economy immediately starts to stagger. Plants stop working, food shortage follows, and soon crowds of angry citizens soon attack the palace.

The scale of the entire economy depends on the amount of gold available to the player during the work shift. And the primary source of gold is the people themselves. Firstly, the bourgeois class pays taxes. Secondly, every citizen generates gold while visiting a canteen or pub. The more citizens you have - the more gold you get! More gold means a larger economy and higher people's prosperity. The only problem is that all classes want a comfortable life here and now. They demand homes, food, entertainment, and medical care. They don't agree to live on a shoestring while the player is busy building an effective economy. They go out on the streets, gather in crowds, and storm the palace. At some point, crime, class strife, and conspiracies appear - and we get an explosive Molotov cocktail, in the flame of which a new social order is born!

Running a city with limited resources is not an easy task. People's demands are high. Some will get a daily ration, while others will remain hungry and angry at the government. With time discontented people will become desperate and attack other more fortunate citizens. To survive, you need to balance three main aspects: developing the economy, satisfying people's needs, and fighting radicals. Without proper management, the city will fall apart and become a mass grave. The fate of the entire nation is in your hands.

Just remember - there is no way to make everyone happy.

Kapital: Sparks of Revolution Breaking Point

Greetings Mayors!

Today we'd like to share our latest and rather unusual story about the development of our upcoming game - Kapital: Sparks of Revolution.

For those who dont know me, my name is Andrey, I am the game designer for Kapital: Sparks of Revolution and the head of the Lapovich Team. I remember last Saturday in August... the weather was good, and the sun was shining brightly, so I could not resist a short riding on my scooter in the park. Still, much work had to be done to finalize our new big project before the launch. There were only few weeks before the planned release... but the fresh air and half an hour riding my scooter was a recipe for success and good mood until the evening.

I was riding my scooter, enjoying the weather, and suddenly a dog jumped out in front of me. Long story short, I ended up in the hospital with a fractured shoulder a "surprise" I did not expect.

Doctors told me that the fracture was complex, and I had to undergo an operation in the next few days, which means that I will not be able to work on the game for a while and it will be impossible to release the project in good shape on time. If we postpone the release for 3-4 weeks it would not be the best plan and not a good idea for an indie game to be released during a period when many AAA games are planned to launch. Also many seasonal Sales on Steam will start at the end of October and will go right up to February 2022. So we had to come up with a new plan and make sure that our idea of how we imagine the game to be will remain intact despite the change.

And what an idea it was! Create the first city-building simulator about class struggle! A divided society, an economic crisis, crowds of disaffected people demanding a better life... Street protests escalate into riots, the poor folks robbing shops and destroying estates, epic story, and conspiracy... Which side will you take, and how far will you go in suppressing the dissent?

At this crisis moment, we sit down with our publisher, 1C Entertainment, who offered us additional help and a new plan to support the project. We created a list of new features that should reveal the class struggle in all its glory. We will add mayhem, hostage-taking, warehouse robberies, factory accidents, mass poisonings, and other accidents! So, each playthrough in our city will be unique and not like the previous ones.

And now, a month and a half after the events described, the situation looks completely different. And we work hard to implement new features in our game. The release is now planned for Spring next year, so we have some additional time to add the new content and polish the game based on the community feedback.

In the meantime, you can watch the new trailer:

The fight continues! The revolution awaits its heroes! Add Kapital to your wishlist!

P.S. By the way, I havent stopped loving scooters, and I will resume my lovely trips in the future.

Kapital Devblog - Power to the people!

Hello everyone! My name is Andrey, I am a game designer and the head of the Lapovich Team. Today we'd like to share our first official blog post about our upcoming game - Kapital: Sparks of Revolution.

When we started working on Kapital in 2018, we could not imagine how many difficulties we would have to overcome to create this game. The idea of the project is to make a citybuilder, in which the player cannot make all the inhabitants happy. And while one half lives a quiet, comfortable life, the other half eats the last cracker and goes out into the streets to sweep away the criminal power of the player in a mighty rush.

The plan was to create a demo in 2-3 months, present it to publishers, sign a contract and calmly engage in development of the game. The first 2 points were implemented immediately, but there were problems with the remaining ones. And only after 2 years of hard work with constant belt-tightening, we managed to sign up with 1C Entertainment. We are now at the finish line for the release, which will take place this Fall.

Kapital is an economic sandbox-strategy about class struggle. The game takes place in Europe at the beginning of the 20th century. The player is the mayor of a ruined city, who was nominated by the local elites to pull chestnuts out of the fire: start the economy, restore infrastructure As soon as life gets better, it will be possible to replace the mayor, or at least to win him over to their side.

Society is represented by nobles, bourgeois and hard workers. Each class has an important role in the life of the city. Nobles serve in administrative buildings and the police. The bourgeois regularly pay taxes, filling the city treasury. Workers work in factories and in public buildings.

Unfortunately, the available resources are not enough to feed and make everyone happy at once. Moreover, refugees from all over the region flock to your island of stability. And if there are not enough resources, there will inevitably be dissatisfied people in the city who will go out on the street with demands: cancel epidemic restrictions, pay off the loans taken, release the opposition members and appoint them as ministers. Well, if the player does not fulfill the requirements - serious consequences are coming - the city will burn!

This cannot be allowed to happen. You can break up the protests and send the radicals to prison. But over time, the cells will run out, besides, you need to pay for the maintenance of prisoners. We can go even further - pass a law on executions and transfer radicals from their cells to the cemetery. But the cemetery is also running out of space, and the executed will be replaced by new freedom fighters.

In general, no matter what the player does, there will always be someone in the city who is dissatisfied with the state of things. And to unravel this tangle of contradictions, we will have to plunge headlong into the boiling cauldron of class struggle.
