Hi pilots, long time not seen!
Since the last update, which was around December 2023, both the game engine and Steam did get a lot of patches and updates. Unfortunately, these changes do not bring greatness to old game, but rather bugs. Which is the case for Wings Of Bluestar.
For a solo indie developer like myself, 4 years is an eternity. Only big studios can afford patching and keeping games up to date for many years. However, I'm back and I'll be fixing the game. I spent the whole day trying to make the game launches on the newest game engine, which is the first step towards my goal.
The biggest bug the game encountered is the gamepads no longer supported. It wasn't my fault, but Steams. They included a new gamepads system, which broke the old one. But I fixed it.
Another major bug I did fix in this patch are the crushes on both stage 6 and stage 8.
Other bugs are fixed, like:
- The game exit message refusing to close.
- The game always selects player 1 despite player 2 being selected.
- And others I can't remember.
There are still a few minor bugs that I'll be slowly fixing. Yep, slowly, because I have two new games I'm working on. Like some broken achievements and some issues with occasional weird player respawns.
With that said, please let me know if there are still major and game breaking bugs, so I can take care of them. Those are my priority right now.
PS: if you liked Wings Of Bluestar, please make sure to check my newest shmup "Shockwave Triggers". A demo is already available on Steam. It's a vertical pixel art shmup. I do appreciate all types of support.

Hello everyone, Thanks a lot for the support and for playing Wings Of Bluestar. As you know, the game got very old, almost 4 years now. And you also may have noticed, updates and patches did also stop a long time ago. Latest update was on February 2023. The reason for the lack of updates is the game engine itself and also Steam. Both of these are getting regular updates and changes, especially the game engine, to the point that the newest update no longer supports the game. And even when I use an old version, I get issues with Steam. That's why it was very hard for me to keep patching the game. But recently, I managed to make the game work again on the newest game engine. Which means I'll be able to work on it and make patches. I won't work on it full time though, because as a solo developer with two new projects, it's hard. This game was my first project and I've made a lot of mistakes. The game is full of bugs due to bad codes and the lack of budget for player testers, again, I'm a solo developer. However, it was a great learning experience and I'm glad that people liked it so far, despite the flaws. That's why I decided to be back and fix all major bugs. Thanks again for the support and I'll do my best to fix the bugs. Shinu Real Arts

Hello pilots!
This is another regular update, in which a few bugs are fixed.
As a few may have noticed, the game was released on consoles 12 days ago (Yeay). And this was a perfect opportunity to get more people to try it out and in the process, some new bugs where reported, as well as new feedbacks.
After finishing work on the console version, I moved to this version and implemented a few fixes.
Thanks again for the support pilots! have a nice day!
Shinu is out (resuming work on my new game project...)

Hey there pilots!
Still working on your bug reports and fixing as many as I can.
Here are the fixes that come with this update:
1 - Pause menu eventual bug during story mode.
2 - Ship 2 loses the ability to charge after killing a boss and charging during the result menu.
3 - Boss 1 death no longer soft locks the game.
4 - Power ups and other items scrolling is fixed to match the stages.
PS: technical explanation for most of these bugs for people interested in coding:
As a few of you know, the game was made in an old engine GMS 1.4. Then ported to a newer engine (at that time) GMS 2 when it was around 90% done. All worked fine till an update in the engine changed some vital functions, one of them is that the engine now stores all values of the game, as long as it is running, without the need of a save system. This wasn't the case in the version in which the game was built; the old version doesn't save anything unless it's part of the save system the developer creates.
Due to this update, a lot of bugs did happen. And the majority of bugs reported by you guys are related to this issue. I'll keep doing my best to fix all of them.
This is a random portrait of the character from my new games, she does look like Aya Morobito and the games share the same world :)
Thanks a lot pilots!

Hello pilots! This another regular bug fixing update following the previous one. As mentioned before, I'm still having issues with the outdated engine, no wonder, the game is 2 years old now and the engine got tons of updates. I managed to get it to work properly, but at a cost; this new game update may brake your save file. Let's hope it won't. Other than that, the following bugs are fixed: 1 - Game crushes during Boss Rush when using ship 2 (Altair). 2 - Ship 2, no fire, auto fire or special when player exits to the title screen during gameplay. 3 - Many graphics broke in the gallery menu. Please let me know if everything works on your side. Thanks in advance!

Hey Pilots! long time not seen. Sorry for the lack of regular updates, but I have some technical issues with the game engine. In order to work on the game I need to use an engine that is by 2022/2023 standards outdated. I can't use the recent version of the engine because they removed/changed a lot of functionalities. This wouldn't be an issue if it wasn't for the old engine now broken and the developers won't fix it because, obviously, it's outdated. The big issue I'm having with it is that it won't save anything done to the project and I have to put a lot of work just to make it save and compile. Hence it's now taking me a lot of time to fix bugs. However, I managed to fix a few recently, here is the list: - Ship 2 (Altair) not showing at stage 3. - Stage 3 brakes if the player restarts it. - Boss timers no longer loop. Issues that player thought are bugs: - No start/pause menu during the visual novel mode: I didn't add one because those are short and player can always use the auto text option to skip fast to shmup gameplay. If in need of pausing, the player can just stop playing, the story mode won't progress. - Some choices in the story mode are gray and have no select arrow: Those need a certain circumstance to be available, player mostly needs to clear the story once to get access to those. Other bugs that I couldn't duplicate: - Boss Rush crashes the game: Works fine on my end. Other than that, the outdated engine is still giving troubles to work with and the game may get some new bugs. Please bear with me and keep reporting them, I'll do my best to fix them. Thanks a lot for the support pilots and happy celebrations! Shinu

Hi there pilots! how is it going? This is just a small update with some little bug fixes. I'll be making a larger update soon, in which I'll redo the whole achievement system and fix the remaining bugged achievements. Cheers, PS: Working hard on my new game btw, looking forward to your support once a demo is ready.

Hello pilots!
This is a regular patch/update, in which I made the following:
- A new artwork in the gallery to unlock, it was a commission I made for a fan. I got the permission to put it in the game.
- The boss time no longer loops after the time is out.
- The boss timer no progresses the story further when it times out. I asked the community about this and the majority opted for this.
- Story mode, in stage 5, the game no longer soft locks if you use auto text. I disabled auto text during that story phase, whiting to find a proper fix for it.
With that said, thanks for the support!

This update tries to fix the newly reported bug in stage 3 where the stage soft locks and stops progressing. I tried my best to reproduce it on my end, but no success, it's always working.
So I decided to update the with the latest version I have, hoping it will solve the issue.
Cheers!

Hey pilots! this is just a regular bugs fix update. Let's hunt them all! Bugs fixed: Story Mode save system. Stage 7 crash to desktop. Boss 7 short lasers. Boss 8 weird lasers. Training mode; lives and credits reset when you go back to the stages selection.

Hi there pilots!
Finally, the annoying stage 3 bugs where the stage starts without the player ship, is fixed.
If you are interested in the details, here is what was causing it:
When ship 2 (Altair) beats a boss and the results are showing, the results controller orders the ship to no longer be controlled by the player and also to move forward and leave the scene. However, when stage 3 starts, the ship still follows the order and leaves the scene. We couldn't see it because it was covered by the transition artwork.
I had to add a debug text that tracks ship 2 position and show where it's located. Thanks to that I was able to see that it still keeps moving forward somewhere far away. Easy bug to fix, but the hard part was to actually discover what is causing it.
Finally, the reason why such bugs still exist is due to the nature of the game being a solo indie release, with almost no budget, add to it being a shmup, which is a niche genre. All this leading to me having difficulties finding beta testers.
Sorry for the long wall of text and thanks again for the support! both for buying the game and for being really helpful reporting bugs.

Hi there pilots! how is it going? This is another regular update, in which a few bugs are fixed. - Now turrets do fire when you press the auto-fire button. - The continue system in the two players mode is fixed. - The return button in the training mode game over brings you back to the training mode. - Item scrolling is fixed. I did my best to replicate the bugs you guys are notifying me about, but for a few, I couldn't, so I did my best to just make the code more solid. Right now I couldn't replicate the bug were the player doesn't show at the start of stage 3, but I tweaked the code and made it more solid, hoping this fixes the issue. Same goes for the 1st boss bug, in which it doesn't register being killed. I defeated it many times but I couldn't get the bug to happen. Once again, I just made the code more solid, hoping this fixes it. With that said, thanks a lot for the support!!

Hi there pilots!
Just a regular update in which I add news features and fix bugs. Here are the new stuff:
- A new feature added:
* Now you can auto fire while moving the right stick. This was asked by a player who like twin stick
shmups and wanted this type of control. You can turn it off/on from the gameplay options.
- Bug fixes:
* Some trophies are fixed.
* The occasional pause not working is fixed.
* Boss 1 not triggering the result and therefore the next stage, fixed.
* 2 players control, a new found bug is fixed.
Alright! that's all for this update! I'm still counting on your support and report.

Hi there pilots!
I hope you are enjoying this special time of the year!!
Here I am with a new update. I finally fixed the continue and respawn bug in the local multiplayer mode.
I've tested it enough to make it an official update. In case there is still an issue there, please let me know.
Sorry I can't test the game thoughtfully due to the lack of testers.
Thanks for the continuous support!

Hello pilots! I hope you enjoyed the auto fire and the extend features. This is just a regular update in which I fixed the turrets not firing when you press auto fire. In addition to that, I added some small details to stage 1, I'll let you discover them. Till next time!

Hey pilots! Sorry for removing the latest build that includes the auto fire and the extend features. Reason for that is a bug that needs some fixing. It'll be available very soon, soon like tomorrow. Thanks for understanding! Shinu Real

Hello there pilots!
Here's a new update, something I've been asked a lot in forums, Twitter and Discord:
The game now has an auto fire button, which allows you to keep firing without entering the slow focus mode. And like the other keys, it's mappable (hope this is a real English word lol).
The other added feature is Extend. Now you are rewarded with an extra life. The extend isn't score based like most shmups, but comes as a reward drop item at the start of stage 5, as long as you are playing normal difficulty or above. So, just survive till stage 5 and you'll get it.
As for the optimization project, it's not done yet, still needs a lot of work since it will include more graphic settings for those with high end PCs. However, this update includes a little optimization and I hope it shows some results.
With that said, I'll be back t work. Looking forward to your feedback, bug reports and suggestions.
Thanks again for the support!

Hi there pilots, I managed to improve the performance for Windows 10 users. Now, stage 1 no longer have major stutters. The issue was during porting the game from the old engine (GMS 1.4) to the newer one (GMS2). While it fixed graphical issues like glitches and window blinking, it create the new texture loading bug, which made the game stutter a lot in stage 1, because it has to load assets during gameplay. Another addition to this build is also the new controller icons for PS4 and X1. I'm not done with optimization though, I'll keep working on the game and making it even better, while counting on your feedback and bug reports. Cheers, Shinu

Hi there pilots, This update is for Windows 7 users who have issues with the latest game build. I worked on the old engine and made some updates to make it up to date with the new version of the game. It may be a bit slightly behind, but you can always provide me with feedback so I can work on it in parallel with the new engine. Two of the biggest updates of the newest build were added to the old one, namely the online leaderboard and the revised story mode. With that said, I hope you are satisfied with the game. Cheers, Shinu Real.

Hi there pilots! For the past few days, I've been working on implementing an online leaderboard in-game. Finally, I was able to make it. Now you can see the top 10 players for each difficulty from the game menu under options --> profile --> show leaderboard. If you want to see the full entries, you can visit the game's community leaderboard. This is still on its testing phase, if you see any bugs or have suggestions, please let me know. Cheers,

Hi there pilots!
Finally, the game just got a major update. It contains the following:
- The game is ported to the latest game engine available. This will solve the compatibility issues we had with Windows 10, like black screens, graphical glitches and low frame rate.
- The story mode is totally revisited and rewritten by a good writer.
- Added a save/load feature to the story mode.
- A new gallery section is added for the story mode.
- Many bugs are fixed.
Hope that the game became better with this huge update. If you guys still encounter bugs or glitches, don't hesitate to contact me and report them. It's thanks to those report that I'm able to improve the game.
Thanks a lot for the continuous support!!

I'm happy to announce that the original soundtrack made by the amazing Big Impact Sound is finally available.
I hope you will enjoy these 29 osts as much as I did while working on the game and listening to them playing in the background.

Since the release is planned for 13th October, Wings Of Bluestar is taking part in the Steam Autumn Festival. In this 2D hand drawn horizontal shoot'em up, get on board of the steady protective Bluewings, or the fast offensive Altair and protect humanity from an artificial but intelligent enemy.
In this demo you can experience and test the core gameplay of the game. Each ship has its own power up, sub-weapons and a special attack mechanism. They also have different scoring systems. Try both of them and see which one is best suited for your taste.
The demo offers both the first stage as single player and the 4th stage as local two players.
Wings Of Bluestar is an indie game that was in the making for 3 years and 9 months now. A long time for a shoot'em up, but it's almost made by a single person and is completely hand drawn and frame by frame animated, each stage, enemy or asset was carefully hand crafted and detailed.
The purpose of this demo is to get feedback from players in order to refine and polish the game before release. We are looking forward to your feedback!
The demo also contains all game's 90 trophies (not linked to Steam yet) and the full page of the gallery, so you can have a taste of features this game offers. In the full version, you'll have access to a full story mode, playable as a visual novel between stages. It offers dialog choices. If certain conditions are met, the player can unlock different story paths and endings.
We hope that you enjoy the demo. we are counting on your support!!

Stay tuned in order to get some new gameplay footage from all modes; arcade, story, boss rush, game shop, gallery etc. I'm also looking forward to talking with you guys during the live stream, feel free to ask question and give feedback at any time. Hello pilots!! How's it going? hope everything is great on your side. This is me again with another game progress update. This time, I'm trilled to announce that the game is almost complete; we successfully merged the story mode into the main game and now all game features and modes are complete. We are just fixing bugs and testing stuff, like optimization, balancing and options. Here is some short gameplay from the story mode: [previewyoutube=H2T1c3i24-Y;full][/previewyoutube] Alright then, back to work! Don't forget, the game will be available on the 13th October. 🎮 Full Controller Support
Protect space against the last wave of an enemy that used to be mankind's ally: a mysterious intelligent artificial life form. Take control of enhanced trainee pilot Aya, or the mysterious veteran pilot Zarak and fight your way through waves of enemies in order to save mankind and to learn more about yourself and also about your enemy.
Wings Of Bluestar is a horizontal hand painted and frame by frame animated HD game, no photobashing, 3D nor pre-rendered assets are used. Every asset is hand crafted and detailed by the same artist, which gives the game its visual integrity.
Wings Of Bluestar is a shoot'em up game that takes the solid gameplay of horizontal arcade shmups and modernizes it for modern PC and consoles use. The game achieves this by adding a lot of features like HD graphics, trophies, a deep story mode that, under certain circumstances, offers dialog choices and therefore multiple endings, gamepads, keyboard and arcade stick support, a shop to unlock artworks, extra credits, sound test, extra game modes and more.
Gameplay-wise, the player has access to two ships (characters), each with its own control, weapon upgrades and scoring system. They also vary in speed, protection and fire power, so each player can find their own style.
Wings Of Bluestar is a hybrid between classic shoot'em ups and "bullet hells" (Danmaku's), so everyone can have their fun.
Despite the game being horizontal, it also has a lot of vertical scrolling as well, to add to the action.
In addition the essential modes like Arcade, local multiplayer, boss rush and training, Wings Of Bluestar adds an extra story mode, for players who want to get more into the story.
The Story Mode is played like short Visual Novel phases between stages. In those phases, the player will have to make dialog choices. And if some conditions are met, it can influence the story and lead to different endings.
- Single and local two players.
- Gamepad (Xbox 360, Xbox One, Dualshock 4), arcade stick and keyboard support, with a button mapping option.
- HD 2D hand painted visuals.
- Each ship has its own play style, weapon upgrade and scoring system.
- Hi-scoring system involves a risk vs reward approach.
- Huge bosses with varied attack patterns.
- 8 stages.
- A story mode in the style of a visual novel game that plays between stage/missions and, if certain conditions are met, offers dialog choices leading to different endings.
- In-game shop using in-game currency to unlock extra features.
- A gallery, featuring original artwork, concept art, and fanarts to unlock.
- A Boss Rush mode that lets you fight against bosses under a timer.
- Steam Trophies.
