Update for New Players

Hello, inventors!

Ive noticed a trend when players dive into Temporian and share their adventures. Many jump right into the game on normal, hard, or even brutal difficulty, skip the tutorial, and later feel lost or find the game too challenging.

Since Temporians release a year ago, Ive been on a mission to make the start smoother for everyone by:

  • Streamlining the tutorial
  • Emphasizing Easy Mode for beginners
  • Introducing automatic recipe updates
  • Simplifying idea generation for characters
  • Producing how-to-play videos
  • Offering extra lifelines to prevent instant game overs

The heart of Temporian is discovery, and the tutorial is there to cover the basics like card stacking and crafting. After that, its all about exploring and learning at your own pace. Some may click with it right away, while others might take a bit longer, and thats perfectly okay!

To ensure everyone gets the most out of their first journey in Temporian, Ive made a change. New adventurers will start on Easy mode with the tutorial guiding them. Once youve triumphed or met your untimely end, all difficulty levels will unlock for your next playthrough.

I hope this enhances your experience without impacting our seasoned players. If it does, Im all ears for your feedback. Happy gaming!

Hotfix v1.2.1

Thanks to MAKAIROSI for spotting a bug in the research book in which research wasn't saved in Normal difficulty.

This has now been resolved.

I've also taken the opportunity to update the font so it's easier to read on the card, hopefully.

Feedback is appreciated!

Biggest Discount Ever!

Hey everyone!

The Steam Deckbuilder Fest is now on, and were ecstatic to be part of the action! No time travel needed, Temporian is available at 50% off right now! Don't just stop there, though, there are plenty of amazing games available right now, so don't forget to check them out, too!

Update Notes for March 9th

What's New in Temporian:

  • Font Update: We changed the game's font. It looks nicer now, so everything's easier to read and looks better.
  • Family Feature: Now, if two of your workers share a house, they can start a family! It adds a cool new twist to how you manage your people, just don't expect them to do much for a long time!
  • New Foods: We've hidden some fun new foods in the game for you to discover, like fries. Who doesn't love finding new snacks, right?
  • Eating Seeds: You can eat seeds now, and we keep them with the other foods that need cooking. It's a small change but makes things more organized.
  • Easier Start: For those playing on Easy mode, we've made it even better. You can start with up to 100 cards now, giving you more options from the get-go.
  • Turn Counter: There's a new turn counter on the screen, so you always know which turn you're on. Handy, right?
  • Easy Mode Hint: We added a note to suggest new players start on Easy mode. It's a great way to get the hang of things.
  • No More Losing Books: You can't put the research book in the Temporian in Easy mode anymore. Even I do it by mistake from time to time, so beginners might not realise what's happened.
  • New Art: We've added some beautiful new artwork for the story events, making those moments even more special.
  • Shelter Reminder: We've made it clearer that your people need shelters, not just to be told they're cold. It's more about SNOWING, not telling.

Fixes:

Bug Squash: We fixed a bug where if you CTRL-Clicked a card not in the Research Book, it would take you to a blank page. No more getting lost in the game!

Hope you enjoy these updates and have even more fun playing Temporian!

Nominate us for "Best Game You Suck At"

Steam recently presented me with several categories for nominating my game, Temporian, in this year's Steam Awards. Among them, one category particularly resonated with me.

Creating Temporian was not initially about crafting a challenging game. However, I aimed for a delicate balance, avoiding hand-holding while encouraging players to embrace both success and failure. The game was designed to prompt players to learn from their errors and improve their strategies for future challenges.

The paradox is that while Temporian is tough, those who have mastered it certainly don't 'suck' at it. Yet, the "Best Game You Suck At" award category humorously highlights the game's challenging nature. So, if you've conquered Temporian's trials, consider this a unique way to celebrate your achievement by nominating it for this award. It's a fun nod to both the game's difficulty and your exceptional skill in mastering it.

And there's more good news! We've just released a new update, and Temporian is currently available at a 40% discount. Whether you're a seasoned player or a newcomer, this is the perfect opportunity to dive into its challenges. See if you can join the elite few who have unraveled all its mysteries!

Autumn Update

Added gifts - Your leader can now create pottery, ornaments and jewellery, as well as Jam and give it to your workers for an instant morale boost. How many can you discover?
Rewind - After tinkering with the Temporian a little, you've discovered a hack that will let you rewind time up to 1 year. Perfect for those little mistakes. Be careful though, as you only have a little bit of energy to work with.
Translations - Improvements have been made to most languages.
Moo - Cows no longer leave your settlement if they aren't on a field or farm. They are cows... they aren't too picky about which grass they eat.
Bug Fix - Fixed potential issue where cards couldn't decide which stack they wanted to join.

As always, if you spot any bugs, please let me know, and I'll get a patch out asap!

[ 2023-11-21 18:44:47 CET ] [ Original post ]

Version 1.0.8

Another update which will hopefully make things easier for players that are new to the game.

Changes

  • Easy Mode research will now carry over to future Easy Mode games
  • Cards stored in the Temporian are now difficulty and profile locked, meaning, for example, you can't transfer a research book from Easy to Hard
  • Unlock cards cost fewer points
  • Unlock points are no longer earned each turn. Instead you earn a fixed amount for completing a run, so long as it's longer than 5 years
  • Unlock points are no longer earned in easy mode
  • The harder the difficulty, the more research points you'll earn upon completion
  • Chinese font updated
  • Japanese font updated

Please let me know if you spot any issues, and I will get right on them.

40% Sale Ends Today!!!

The 40% launch sale ends in just a few hours!

The price will not drop to this level again in the near future, so if you'd like to get Temporian, now's your chance!

As promised a few weeks ago, Temporian would get one final drop in price to what it was in Early Access, as a thank you for those who've supported its development early.

Since the 1.0 release a week ago, Temporian has received 6 additional updates, following player advice and requests.

We still have plenty more content to come, so join the community and make Temporian the best it can be!

[ 2023-07-24 13:43:07 CET ] [ Original post ]

Release Version 1.0.6

Quite a few changes and additions were added to this build, so let's break them down.

  • The Chinese Version was retranslated by Everqueen! Thanks for that!
  • The Research Book has been changed so pages are sorted by category and then alphabetically.
  • The Research Book has been updated to allow players to type on their keyboard, and it will search for what you're typing in.
  • If you press the CTRL key while on the board, the cursor will change to a magnifying glass. Ctrl-Click on a card to go straight to that page in the research book.
  • A symbol has been added to the Year so it's easier to know the current season.
  • Full screen is no longer toggled by the esc key. You can find a new option in the options menu.
  • The Esc key will now close the research book and will exit to the main menu from the board.
  • Clay can now be found from the river.

Please let me know your thoughts on these changes, as well as if you find any bugs!

Enjoy

Thank You

Hi, everyone!

I'm just about to hit the button that will take Temporian out of Early Access and officially release it, but before that, I wanted to take a moment to write this message.

I want to thank each and every one of you. I want to thank you for your support these past few months, helping me shape Temporian.

When I first started designing it a year and a half ago, I couldn't have imagined how proud I would feel watching each of you playing it, sharing your stories, feedback and ideas.

You have truly made Temporian into what it is today, and for that, you have my upmost graditude.

However, we need to look at this moment as a launch pad, and make Temporian the best game it can be!

I reiterate my promise that there will be no paid dlc, and development will continue for many months to come!

So, thank you once more, and may luck guide you on your journey home!

Version 1.0 Out Now!!!

Come and watch the community play version 1.0 of Temporian's Multiplayer!

[ 2023-07-06 20:25:55 CET ] [ Original post ]

Version 1.0 is Coming!

Dear Valued Players,

I hope you've been enjoying your journey as Temporian is developed and refined. I have a couple of important updates to share.

First, in approximately one month, I'll be releasing Version 1.0, a major milestone! Compared to Temporian's initial Early Access release, this version includes many changes and additions that I'm proud to share with you:

  • Gameplay Mechanics and Functionality: I've made critical adjustments to gameplay descriptions and mechanics for an even more immersive experience.
  • New Additions: New elements such as custom card storage, additional cards, and many more exciting features.
  • Functionality Improvements: Enhancements like better ways to fast-forward and improved sorting in the recipe book have been implemented for a smoother gameplay experience, and taking single cards from stacks.
  • Visual and Audio Enhancements: Toggle weather effects and smoother music transitions.
  • Balancing Changes: Based on your feedback, I've rebalanced the game to ensure a fair and enjoyable experience for everyone.
  • Bug Fixes: Numerous bugs have been fixed, resulting in increased stability and overall enjoyment of the game.

A more expansive list is below this announcement.

Along with 1.0's release, Scenarios will finally be included in the game. Scenarios will allow players to unlock new cards, as well as try their hand at the game with different starting conditions, new events, and challenging restrictions.

Second, in alignment with my initial plans to reflect the value of these substantial updates, and as mentioned in the Early Access notes on the store page, I will be adjusting the price of the game from $8.99 to $14.99. This change will come into effect on May 30th, aligning with Steam's pricing policies.

I understand that price changes can be a sensitive subject. It's essential to note that this decision wasn't made lightly. The initial reduced price was my way of thanking early adopters who supported me and helped shape the game through their valuable feedback.

If you've been thinking about joining our community, you can still purchase the game at the Early Access price of $8.99 for the next three days. To celebrate the full release, I'm also planning a special launch day discount - giving you one more chance to get the game at a reduced rate before the new price takes full effect.

Once again, thank you for your support and understanding. I can't wait for you to experience Version 1.0!

Additionally, I'd like to share that I firmly believe in delivering true value to you. This is why I'm not a fan of paid DLCs - I want the game to grow organically and be accessible to all of you who have supported me on this journey. That's why I'm committing to adding free content updates to the game, even after we reach Version 1.0.

So, rest assured, the launch of 1.0 is not the end - far from it. It's just the beginning of a new chapter in our adventure together, one filled with exciting new additions and enhancements that I can't wait for you to experience. Your journey in our game world will continue to evolve and expand.

Thanks again for your amazing support.

Changelog #10

Changes

  • Removed eating after researching
  • Fixed bug where potatoes didn't disappear after making a farm
  • Added screenshot to multiplayer
  • New secret building added
  • Fixed bug where "Ending Music" continues after starting a new game
  • Red and Green card visuals are more accurate when identifying valid and invalid recipes

Thanks for the reports and suggestions. I'm sorry that there haven't been as many updates lately, but I've been working on creating new scenarios.

The update will be released when I've completed the first 6. There are an additional 6 planned after this in the future.

I feel we're approaching version 1.0, and will continue to polish.

Again, if you have any ideas or suggestions, please do post them in the suggestions section. If you stumble upon some bugs, please post them in the Bugs section. It's a lot easier to keep everything organised.

Changelog #9

New Build

  • Added new Unique worker to the character pool
  • Added new animal. Let me know when you find it ;)
  • Removed Shells from solo foraging, and increased the chance of finding apples
  • Added the Recipe Book back into Brutal Mode... but hid the recipes until you create them. I'm not a complete monster :)
  • 2xLogs press bug has been fixed
  • Further randomised the items the Traveller will trade
  • Fixed a bug that broke the tutorial
  • Added a new method of storing cards, hover over to the paper on the left, and you'll now see 3 custom storage spaces. You can only store one type of card on each space, but it will allow you to easier tidy up your workspace. For example, store seeds there, so they don't take up room until you need to use them.

[ 2023-05-10 18:11:06 CET ] [ Original post ]

Changelog #8

Changes

  • If you don't have any trees, the traveller will only give you apples if you trade them an item
  • When a worker's health gets low, their name will turn red as well as their remaining life
  • When an animal's health gets to 1 their health and name will turn red
  • The Spring tree will now show very light pink leaves to make it more obvious what season it is
  • Morale has been changed so it will show you how much you need for your next worker
  • Workers will only lose 1 morale each in winter, unless they lack a house, in which case they will lose up to 3
  • When workers eat, it will display their current morale, which will show red if they're not gaining morale, and green if they are
  • Updated the village description to mention that people can recover health there
  • Added new sort button, sorting food by which will boost morale more. Not only will it sort by best to worst food, but it will also ensure you eat the lowest health ones first. Eat the worst of the best!
  • Fixed health flickering bug when mass picking
  • Electricity was still in recipe book. This has now been removed
  • Fixed a bug where you could send large buildings through the Temporian in multiplayer

Thanks to Die Bse and IcE. for pointing out the last 2 :)

New Stable Build

Stable Update

Here we go! This update includes everything from the beta, as well as a few last minute bug fixes and changes.

Changes:
Beta #1
• Vineyards also turn into fields when they are used up now, just like farms.
  • Temporian is more effective in Brutal
  • You don't get tools when you start Brutal anymore
  • Tools are removed from counter when shared in multiplayer games
  • Added glass as a new recipe. This will open quite a few doors, I'm not sure I'm ready to go down
  • Added Telescope
  • Added Watchtower. This allows you to effectively duplicate natural resource cards, such as a forest, quarry, river, or even water.
Beta #2
• Corrected the sawmill recipe, so it now allows you to actually research it
  • Changed labelling system, so you now right click a card
  • 2 new methods of creating a press
  • Totally recreated the way in which cards are produced (This may lead to graphical glitches - Please let me know!)
  • Reduced the number of on screen sprites and text, which should help with frame rate
  • Changed the colour for living beings, so they're easier to spot
  • Corpses caused a problem on fast mode - Now resolved
  • The game will no longer move on to the Recipe Book until it has saved your game. This may have been causing an error on certain machines
  • You can now carry your Research Card onto a future game by feeding it to the Temporian
Beta #3
• Butter can now be melted into oil
  • Cards spawned by the Temporian can no longer be used on the Temporian a second time (This includes the Research Book)
  • If the Research Card is destroyed or stored in the Temporian, you can no longer read it

  • Watchtower has been changed to Tower. You can use the spyglass in combination with it to locate items

  • Recipe book sorting has yet again been altered, sorting items into categories
  • When health is low on a worker (less than 21), the number will change to red
  • Workers with 10 or less health may cough when picked up, giving an additional indication that they are nearing the end of their life
  • End-game changed. You now need to:

  • Repair the Temporian
  • Build a Gravity Battery
  • Build a Generator

The TO DO list has been updated accordingly
Additions
• You weren't able to research Potatoes - Fixed
    • Sometimes, carrots were set as raw, rather than food - Fixed
    • Pie quantities have been reduced. A chef will now only make 1 more pie than any other cook

As mentioned, this new build extends the endgame slightly, meaning you will need to work more with metals.

As always, feedback is greatly appreciated!

    Stable Update Incoming

I've been working on the beta version for the past 2 weeks, and I've gathered a lot of valuable information, as well as made several big changes!
This is just a message to let you know that tomorrow's update will render your current saves incompatible.
Therefore, if you're in the middle of a game, please finish it before updating.
The patch will be released at 18:00 GMT.
I'm glad to see so many of you enjoying the game. With this update, the endgame has been extended close to where I aim for it to be in the final release, as well as introducing several new cards.

We still have some way to go, but I can now start unlocking the Scenario mode over the next couple of weeks. I'm excited to share more information about this, but will save that for a future message.

Finally, I just want to emphasise that while we're still in Early Access there will be no discount or price drop. I don't think it's fair to offer a discount to others after you've all kindly helped me improve the game.

Saying that, as mentioned in the Early Access notes on the Store page, when the game is fully released, the price will be increased by an amount that's still to be determined.

There are thousands of people who have wishlisted the game, and I just want to make sure they don't miss out on the current low price.

If you happen to know of someone who has wishlisted the game, please let them know.

As always, thank you for your support, it means more than you know.

    Alright... back to inventing!

    [ 2023-04-23 04:42:08 CET ] [ Original post ]

    Beta #3

This update should bring us significantly closer to what I'd consider the final build of the main game.

With any luck, I'll be releasing this build as stable tomorrow afternoon (Saturday 22nd April).

Please note, once released into stable, your old savegames will be incompatible, so please complete any runs before updating.

    • Butter can now be melted into oil
    • Cards spawned by the Temporian can no longer be used on the Temporian a second time (This includes the Research Book)
    • If the Research Card is destroyed or stored in the Temporian, you can no longer read it
    • Glitch effect added to Cards that have time travelled

    • End-game changed. You now need to:

    Beta #2

    Changes:

Important: Please note that this new build has made some significant changes to the way in which the game produces assets. Therefore, it will break old games, requiring you to start anew.

Once the build is finalised this weekend, it will once again purge old saves automatically.

Therefore, if you're mid-game, please do not update.

    •
You can now carry your Research Card onto a future game by feeding it to the Temporian
That bottom one is a big one, and people have been asking for it for a while now.

If you store your Research book in the Temporian, you can bring it with you to future games, or even other profiles.

Note that if you destroy or move put your Research Book into the Temporian, it will remove the Research button in the top right.

Because there have been so many significant changes, please be aware that bugs are highly probable, but that hasn't stopped us before!

    Beta Patch

    Changes:

    • Vineyards also turn into fields when they are used up now, just like farms
    • Temporian is more effective in Brutal
    • You don't get tools when you start Brutal anymore
    • Tools are removed from counter when shared in multiplayer games
    • Added Glass as a new recipe (This will open quite a few options for future tech)
    • Added Spyglass
    • Added Watchtower. This allows you to effectively duplicate natural resource cards, such as a forest, quarry, river, or even water.

Remember, if you're not on the beta, and would like to join, please do so using the password "temporianbeta".

Obviously, beta versions aren't as thoroughly tested as stable branches.

    Beta Branch

To avoid what happened today, regarding old saves being incompatible, I'm going to be creating a new branch of builds.

The stable build, and the beta build.

You're all welcome to gain access to the beta build, which will include all of the latest features and updates.

Once I'm happy with the build, I'll be publishing it as a stable build. Hopefully on a weekly basis.

I can't apologise enough for releasing a build that breaks your saves without warning. I know a lot of you put in a great deal of time, and having that simply taken away is beyond disappointing.

Hopefully, I've learned from my mistake, and having this beta build will stop that from being an issue in the future.
How to Join
If you'd like to join the beta build, please right click Temporian in your Steam Library, select manage, select the beta tab and input the password "temporianbeta".

This will unlock the beta branch.

I don't imagine we'll have another save incompatibility glitch, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

    Hotfix

EDIT - WARNING: if you experience a black screen when continuing a new game, I'm afraid you will have to start a new game. This is due to the new method of saving and loading being updated, and being incompatible with the old one! Really sorry about this, but I'm afraid it can't be helped.

If it continues to be a problem, please let me know!

This should be a quick hotfix to prevent the game from locking up when transitioning from the recipe book to the main game, or the other way around.

Couldn't quite pinpoint what was causing it, so added several preventative measures... and with any luck, at least 1 of them will stop it from happening again.

Additionally, corrected a bug in the options menu where it wasn't displaying the correct translation for certain languages.

Finally, fixed a bug which might have occurred, but wasn't reported where the game could process the ending incredibly fast.

This is now turned off, and I will look into ways of perhaps skipping through that part of the game.

If it breaks anything else, and this fix makes things worse instead, please let me know asap, and I will revert to the previous build.

    Thanks, everyone!

    Changelog #6

    Changes:

    • We now have a Sawmill, which is a late game card. It will allow you to turn up to 5 logs into 10 planks in a single turn.
    • Some languages have had their translations updated. Thanks to for help with the Korean translation.
    • You can now quickly find out where your workers are by hovering over the Housing button at the top.
    • New toggle in Options will allow you to set the game to always run at a faster speed during the processing stage, without needing to hold down the spacebar or mouse button. Please note, this will make it hard to see what's going on.
    • Hopefully fixed the multiplayer bug with the Steam name not appearing, but the only way to test it is on Steam.
    • Added a new secret to the game. Let me know if you find it ;)

Haven't seen too many bugs again with the last build, so the next will likely also be able to have new features!

If you have any ideas, as always, please share them! And if you're enjoying the game so far, please consider giving it a review! It really helps out!

    Changelog #5

    Changes:

    • Changed multiplayer from turn-based to real time. You no longer have to wait for each other to finish. Play as you want, even if they're offline. They can join whenever they want.
    • You're now able to send a queue of resources to your friend through the Temporian.
    • Friend's Steam name should now appear.
    • Food has been balanced a little more.
    • Leader can now still research alone after forming the school.
    • Logs are no longer super fuels (Sorry Jester!)
    • Added a new secret to the game.

Things appear to be more stable this week than last week, so it might be time to start adding new buildings and extending the length of the game.
    So far, I have planned:

    • A sawmill, which will allow you to cut multiple logs at the same time.
    • A workbench which will allow you to disassemble items back into their base components.

    • I'm currently planning and researching methods of creating batteries, as I'm not a fan of just slapping an electricity card onto the Temporian.
    • Also researching other methods of creating generators.
    • Also want to create more ways that electricity can be used.

I have to be careful with expanding the game. It's incredibly easy to make a game feel bloated and boring by adding new content.

If you have any ideas, as always, please share them!
