We have released a new update for The Hive. Our main focus was to resolve difficulty issues with A.I behaviour on levels 4 and 5.
We were also able to find a solution, why The Hive ending cinematic "The Age of Discovery" would not play for every player at end of the campaign.
It is now working correctly for everyone. If you have not seen it, we recommend completing the last level again!

1.204 - 2023-05-11
Bug fixes:
- Fixed issue where Ending Cinematic "Age of Discovery" would not play after completing the campaign, if loading from a save.
- Fixed issue where A.I would be too aggressive with attacks on levels 4 and 5.
- Balanced out the attacking Chalatoi forces on levels 4 and 5.
- Players now have more time between attack waves on levels 4 and 5.
- Player starting food increased from 20 to 50 on levels 4 and 5.
- Added additional food and mineral sources to levels 4 and 5 starting areas.
- Chalatoi Archers range reduced from 50 to 35. They can no longer outrange player turrets.
- Skip function now works on ending cinematic

Another small update has been released, the main thing here was sorting out bugs when loading a saved game.

Bug fixes:
- Fixed issue where GUI would get stuck if played had resource source selected when it runs out
- Fixed issue where inventory icons would not show up after loading
- Fixed issue where items would disappear when loading a save
- Fixed issue where certain items could be duplicated after loading
- Items are now returned to unit that had them after loading a save
- Items equipped on workers are now returned to inventory after loading a save

Today we are proud to release update 1.2 "Rise of the Behemoths", which includes new player units, buildings and a reworked DNA upgrade system.
Behemoth
Heavy Insectoid unit Behemoth - A sturdy unit with heavy melee attack. It nests small Seeker aerial units on its back. Light Insectoid aerial unit Seeker - Swarm of them is carried on Behemoths back. Uses aerial bombing attacks to hit enemies from range.
Infestor
Medium Insectoid specialist Infestor - Uses a variety of neural oozes to terrorize enemies and aid friendly units. This update features:
- Heavy Insectoid unit Behemoth
- Medium Insectoid specialist Infestor
- Small Insectoid aerial unit Seeker
- Insectoid building Nestling Mound
- Insectoid building Conch
- Damage and Defence upgrade rework (Different classes have different upgrades, light, medium, heavy)
- Food costs at start of levels adjusted to speed up start of levels
- Rhino and Avatar now have custom sound effects
- First level boss damage adjusted
- Streamers now get notification regarding video quality, if they are using OBS recording software
- Several new ability visual effects and sounds have been added
- "Shadow" faction buildings now have custom debris effect on destruction
- Avatar and wasp units no longer get stuck after ability cast
- Several tooltip tweaks
- Population cap can no longer go over 200 due to saving bug
- All workers now continue their current task correctly after loading
- Workers no longer get stuck on cutscenes
- Tomb of Aradesh overlaping music fixed

Pathfinding performance and bug fixing
Today we released an update 1.108 that includes performance updates and bug fixes. This update features:
- Major optimization of Pathfinding and collisions performance
- Commanding huge number of units is now much smoother
- Multiple buildings can now be selected at same time
- Several enemy patrol routes are now better
- Fixed bug with inventory and camera scroll
- If building is destroyed it will no longer show construction bar
- HP bars are hidden when the level is won
- Modified raycast is used for units in mainmenu

New level up system and solving issues
Today we released an update 1.107 that includes overhaul of the level up system. We also added new sound effect for all player buildings. This update features:
- All player buildings now have unique sound effect when you select them
- Level up system overhaul
- Level up bonuses apply to all squad members
- All unit levels now have meaningful stat increases
- Hover over unit level to see stats gained from experience
- You can now see what next level up will give to your units
- Different units have different bonuses from leveling up
- Experience points needed for unit to level up is increased from 500 to 1000 (to reflect reduced number of unit levels
- Maximum level is now 5 down from 1-99
- "Ding!" achievement now required level 5, down from 20
- Bonuses are not lost when unit is resurrected
- Items are now correctly hided during cutscenes
- Fixed issue that was slowing the game down when commanding large number of units
- Game runs now more smoothly due to optimization

Solving issues and adding new features
Today we released an update 1.106 that includes a bunch of that tidying up. This update features:
- Map02 now has new music
- Credits now have new music
- Map10 cutscenes now have a little story surprise for you!
- Load/save/quick load/quick save, are now correctly disabled during cutscenes
- DNA amount now loads correctly when you load a save
- Avatar chain bolt now jumps to 10 targets, up from 3
- Avatar chain bolt damage increased from 80 to 100
- Avatar chain bolt cooldown reduced from 60seconds to 30seconds
- "Always Blame the Healer" achievement now requires 1000 healing on one medic, instead of 5000
- "Acidodger" achievement now works correctly
- Completing the game on hard difficulty now rewards "Hive Guardian" achievement correctly
- Completing the game on insanity difficulty now rewards "Insane" achievement correctly
- "Killing Spree" achievement should now be easier to achieve with the Avatar changes
- Spring building grid is now "smarter"
- Construction queue now cancels right slot
- All opened/unopened chests now save correctly
- Final door in map01 now opens correctly if loading save in certain part of the map
- Map02 debris pile now works correctly

Hey everybody, with this 1.105 update we're fixing a bunch of small issues in The Hive.
We've read through tons of your feedback, with this update we plan to fix several small issues the community reported for us. This update features:
- Units spawned from Queen now take population cap into consideration
- Spring now shows right portrait when selected
- +2,+3 Attack and armor upgrade are now correctly saved
- "Ding" achievement now requires unit to be level 20, instead of 30
- "Play of the game" achievement now requires Avatar instead of Medic
- Wraith hp buffed from 300 -> 1000, Wraith damage increased from 5 -> 15
- "So Bright It Burns" achievement now again works when you light torches to burn the wraith
- "Full Hive" achievement now requires population of 200 instead of 24
- Black fog added so players cant see over the edges of the map
- Speaker subtitles now show correct speaker in map02
- Map07 A.I now gives players more time to prepare for incoming attack
- Medic now has voice lines
- Save/load menu bars now use correct texture
- Map01 camera bounds are now working correctly
- Attack and defence upgrades now apply to new and old units correctly
- Map02 no longer auto completes when you load a saved file in certain part of the map
- Videos for Linux are now using custom .ogv videos rendered using VP8 codec

The Hive 1.100 - Winds of Change
Hello everyone! Today we are proud to release update 1.100 Winds of Change for The Hive. We wanted to especially focus on adding features requested by the community. Our plan was to update The Hive from Unity Engine 5.6.7 to 2019.1 version. 1.100 update remarks the biggest patch we have done for the game so far. One of the most significant improvements was to rework the whole game interface and the addition of full 4k support. Other major visual upgrade was converting the whole project to use linear color space, and the addition of new visual post processing effects. Also, notable updates are the addition of two new Insectoid buildings, two new units for Chalatoi faction and all new visuals for Infected faction. We also made all new spell and particle effects utilizing the now available tools. You can now hide the game interface using (L) key, to take shiny screenshots.

Gameplay Updates
- New Insectoid buildings, the spring and the burrow (burrow has 4 model variations)
- New enemy units, chalatoi bowman and spearman
- The vast majority of all particle effects in the game have been redone
- Buildings can now be properly selected when they are being built
- Several cutscenes improved
- Pathfinding system improved
- Player objectives now work correctly when loading a save
Graphics Improvements
- All new post processing effects
- Color space changed from Gamma to Linear
- Lighting data rebaked for all scenes
- Additional detail added to all maps
- Infected faction has all new textures
- Several world object textures improved
- Animations added to several world objects
- All buildings now have debris effect when they are destroyed
- Buildings now have hover circle for selection
- Scene lighing changes on color and position
- Several units and plants now glow in the dark, illuminating nearby objects
- All levels now have reflections for metallic objects like coins, gold and weapons
Unit rebalance
The new population system, introduced along with the burrow building, now has a much higher maximum population of 200 (up from 40). You start with 25 maximum population with a hive, but building a burrow will increase the cap by 35.
- Legionnaire attack reduced to 4 (down from 5)
- Legionnaire population cost increased to 5 (up from 1)
- Hunter armour piercing passive has been fixed
- Medic population cost increased to 3 (up from 1)
- Medic's revive ability has been moved to the Avatar, to give it more value and limit the amount of available revives
- Queen population cost increased to 6 (up from 1)
- Wasp population cost increased to 3 (up from 1)
- Wasp poison damage increased to 2 per second (up from 1 per second)
- Wasp maximum health increased to 200 (up from 160)
- Avatar population cost increased to 6 (up from 1)
- Avatar food cost increased to 150 (up from 100)
- Rhino population cost increased to 3 (up from 1)
- Unit upgrades now cost 100/200/300 DNA (down from 250/500/750)
UI Rework
This is a complete re-write of the UI system to use the new Unity canvases. It was required to get 4K support. We added a way to hide your UI with a keybind (default is L) that can be rebound in the new settings interface. You can also press the highres screenshot button (default Alt+P) to take a 4K screenshot.
- 4K resolution support
- A large amount of UI images were redone at a higher resolution
- Completely redesigned settings controls section
- Unlimited inventory space
- Item stats now have highlight colours for positive/negative effects
- New health bar effects
- Bosses and buildings now have larger health bars
- Dialog subtitles now show who is talking, with matching colours

- Units that have to be unlocked are now shown in grey, and tell where they can be unlocked from
- New building queue shows how many units you have in queue past 4
- Selecting chests, fishing spots, or mineral veins now shows a hint about how to harvest them
- Chests, fishing spots, and mineral veins now have portraits
- The final boss' [spoiler]protective bubble button now has a cool new glow around it[/spoiler]
- Game engine is updated from 32 bit to support 64 bit operating systems

The Hive 1.090 - Save & Load Anywhere Released
Hello everyone, today we are releasing update 1.090 for The Hive Our plan for this update was to add save&load anywhere feature and quality of life improvements. We are also adding one of the four new units to Chalatoi faction. In the future updates, we are planning to change how population cap works, add new player buildings and units. Our plan is to add more strategy for combat, where certain units are not always the strongest solution.
- You can now save and load anywhere in the game
- Chalatoi have gained new worker unit
- You now start the levels with additional workers
- GUI improvements with sharper textures
- Close buttons for several menus
- Lightmaps updated
- Light probes updated for better unit lighting.

I wanted to make this thread to answer some of the basic questions that the community has had. If you want some additional information, feel free to ask :)
Basic information
Story of The Hive is inspired by novel "The Descent" released in 1999. In the novel humans discover caverns of hell beneath pacific ocean and send expedition to explore them. Gameplay is inspired by Homeworld and Dawn of War series. Level names like "Gehenna" or "Great Wastelands" are homage to Homeworld. There is also Kadesh eye symbol painted on the Chala'toi helmets. Design
Design of the Insectoid race is based on Crustacean and Arachnid creatures. We did not want to make the insectoids disgusting for players and went after "cool" factor instead. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crustacean https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arachnid In the original script, first of the Insectoid race is born as you start the game. The waters in planet Eden have special property, that speed up evolution of new primordial creatures significantly. Insectoids were going to be amphibian race, that adapted to the dangers of the new world.
Q&A
Q: Intro is confusing, what do the humans have to do with the game? A: Intro is prelude to explain how the humans arrive on planet Eden. Player is going to encounter them later in the story. When the game starts, first of the Insectoids is spawned in the underground world of Eden. The human faction is currently on the planet orbit and surface. Q: Derelict ship is millions of years old, are they the humans? A: Derelict ship had crashed on Eden millions of years before the events of the game. They are not human faction but something entirely different. It's not the only ship.. there are many more burried on the surface.. Human campaign is going to shed more light, on what caused them to crash on the planet.
Q: How is the story going to continue after Insectoid campaign? A: Story would continue with human campaign. Starting from the events happening after arrival on Eden. Human campaign gameplay would be turn based instead of real-time. We had great ideas, that we could not do with the current real-time mechanics. Q: What is going to be in the next update? A: We are currently working on "save where you want" feature and making the gameplay feel smoother. Q: How big is the development team? A: We are small Finnish game studio with core 3 people. Q: What other games have you worked on before? A: My first personal game "Joutomaa" was released on Moddb back in 2010. The Hive 0.15 Released & Upcoming features
Hello everyone, today we are releasing update 0.15 for The Hive Our plan for this update was to increase performance and continue to integrate The Hive to new Unity 5 engine. We also worked hard to fix bugs caused by change of engine, for example how new physics work. We also wanted to talk about upcoming features we have planned for The Hive and community feedback.
Difficulty modes
Our plan has been to introduce Difficulty modes for those that have already completed The Hive and seek more challenge. Survival Difficulty that let's you keep all the units you have from one level to next and in the same time making the game world more dangerous. Each difficulty would have it's own save file that you choose from mainmenu
- Normal difficulty (the current one)
- Survival (Units, resources, dna, items and everything carry over to next mission, monsters are much harder and you resources are more scarce)
- Hard difficulty (Unlocked after completing campaign on normal, increases monster difficulty)
- Insanity difficulty (Unlocked after completing campaign on Hard, more monsters, more difficult, more boss abilities, damage greatly increased)
Steam Achievements
- 40 Unique Achievements total
- Some Achievements are tied to boss battles, avoid X ability etc
- Style is based on pixelart
- Simple, clean, easy to read the picture and what it represents
- We would like to design interesting achievements based on player feedback and suggestions
0.15 Bug fixes & Features:
- Physics performance increased
- More light optimizing, increased ammount of light spots
- Game music and sound effects now always play on priority 1 (stops stuttering)
- Physics collision improved, units now only hit correct layers
- Shadow casters improved on all levels

The Hive 0.14 - Unity 5 update is now available
Hello everyone, today we are releasing update 0.14 for The Hive Our plan for this update was to upgrade whole project from Unity 4 to Unity 5.3.4p2 version, We also wanted to focus on fixing known bugs and improve certain boss fights.
Bug fixes & Features:
- Whole project upgraded to use Unity 5 engine
- Shadows are now enabled on all levels on default
- 95% of all shaders now use new one
- Lights on every level optimized and changed
- Camera movement speed increased 1 -> 1.5
- Units no longer get stuck underground

- Queen attack now has a slightly larger range and quicker attack speed

Hello everyone, today we are releasing update 0.13 for The Hive called "Drowned God" Our plan for this update was to more playable content, puzzles, music, npcs, balance the game and fix existing bugs (no pun intended)

New Items - Concept Art

One of the suggestions was that items that Insectoids can carry are more organic instead of normal gear like armor and swords. We would also like to decrease the current stats of items and make the attributes more interesting. You could have passive and active item effects like cleave, lifesteal, hp regen or "cursed" items that have posivite and negative effects at the same time.
We would love to hear suggestions on what kind of new items you would like to see, both visually and how they affect the current game mechanics.
We are also developing new Insectoid unit upgrade from Legionnaire to "Rhino" This unit would act as a armored "tank" of the Insectoid army that has taunt. Best of wishes ~Sauli

The Gatekeeper is now available!
Hello everyone, today we are releasing update 0.08 for The Hive called "The Gatekeeper" Our plan for this update was to release more playable content and introduce new boss battle elements for the players. We felt that boss monsters should be more challenging and interesting. ACT1 Ancient (Crab boss) has been enchanced with the new abilities to tune and test the system. Please provide us feedback how the new fight feels! Our other plan was to enable DNA upgrades to unlock new units. Player now has the option to choose when he wants to unlock X unit or upgrade.

Hello everyone, today we are releasing update 0.07 for The Hive called "Gehenna" Our plan for this update was to release more playable content and introduce new RPG elements for the players. We felt that exploring and defeating the enemy creatures should be more rewarding. Enemy creatures now have chance to drop loot that Insectoid faction can take advantage of. There has been a lot of tuning with the new system and we want to gather more feedback from the players. Our other plan was to add item upgrades and new currency for players called "DNA" This is used to evolve and adapt Insectoids to face the challenges of planet Eden.

Hello everyone, today we are releasing update 0.06 for The Hive called "Ancient Waterway" Our plan for this update was to release more playable content and introduce new AI system for the players. This enables us to make missions where you get more pressure from the opponent, welcome variation to the earlier story heavy missions. There has been a lot of tuning with the new system, making sure the fights still feel fair for the players.
