Wreckage Early Access Begins NOW!

Greetings Drivers!

Wreckages Early Access begins now, on the 30th anniversary of Twisted Metal.

Without the monumental impact that Twisted Metal I & II had on us, Wreckage simply would not exist today. We know there are many others out there like us who grew up with classic car combat games, and there are few titles that both capture the nostalgia and scratch the itch.

So thats why were launching Wreckage today: we want to celebrate the shoulders we ride on! We would also love for you to take what weve got for a spin.

This game is currently in an ALPHA state. The edges are rough, but weve found the fun within the game and were ready to finish bringing this world to life. Despite being in Alpha, there are some fun little surprises in the game already and we hope you enjoy smashing your way through the Tournament and Challenge Modes.

But enough preamble, lets discuss whats in Early Access and what you can expect as we blaze a trail to version 1.0.

Whats in the Early Access Build?

Early Access currently includes:

  • 1995 Tournament Campaign. This is a work-in-progress mode housing campaigns for each playable character.

  • Currently just levels to play through, but were working on adding some intro cutscenes and light story beats to flesh out the world and characters.

  • We are also planning to amp up the presentation for each campaign, currently youll just begin each level and play through them.

  • Challenge Mode. This is Tony Hawk meets Twisted Metal. Each level has a handful of different challenges to meet (to create a perfect run) within the time limit.

  • Currently, all the challenges are the same. Over time we may adjust these based on player feedback.

  • Challenge Mode currently has a limited number of available maps, and this will increase over time.

  • Split Screen & Remote Play. 2-4 players can all beat the heck out of each other in a PvP game mode. This can happen on the same machine with multiple controllers, or via Steam Remote Play!

  • We are developing a dedicated co-op mode, but this will take some time.

  • We also need to retool Last Man Standing as a game mode. We may consider developing other multiplayer experiences if time allows.

Whats in Development?

  • Polishing Tournament Mode. This looks like mini-narratives for every playable character contained in Tournament Mode. Cutscenes, voice overs, the works.

  • Adding secrets to every level. In the spirit of the genre, were going to be adding secrets to every level, and also making sure they look (and feel) great.

  • AI behavior upgrade. Currently the AI behaves like a bag of rocks being swung around by a swarm of angry bees. Its indiscriminate, bumps into a lot of things, and is more focused on damage than anything else.

  • We know there are a number of pathing issues that are likely to crop up (though weve solved the worst of them). We hope that by the time 1.0 launches, we can have a much smarter AI that feels strong, but fair.

  • I-95 Death Race. This is the mode were very excited for, but it also needs a lot of time in the oven. This is a dedicated rogue-lite mode that tasks you with surviving levels with increasingly more difficult enemies, mutators, and car builds for yourself. The characters, cars, and items you unlock in this mode are equipable in Challenge Mode.

Wreckage 1.0 Timeline

We are aiming to wrap development for Wreckage by the 30 year anniversary of Twisted Metal II (October 31st, 2026). Weve spent a lot of time building the core systems and game feel of Wreckage over the last few years, so now were able to focus on getting it content complete.

Road to Early Access: Combat Overview

Hey there Gearheads! Your enthusiasm for the news about our upcoming Next Fest demo and Early Access blew us away. We cant wait for you to get your hands on things. Were hard at work torching bugs and getting the demo ready for October 13th. If you missed the news last week, heres a recap:\n

    Now, lets dive into what youre probably here for the GUNS.

    Weapon Pickups and Arena Pickups

    Each car can carry up to four weapons and their Special. These four weapons are:

    • Fire

    • Homing

    • Power

    • Swarmer

    Fire is a short range damage over time attack. Its also very effective against multiple enemies, and those inevitable moshpit pileups.\n

    Homing shoots a missile that will track enemies extremely aggressively. This is really great as a parting shot if your enemy is about to escape from your assault.

    Power shoots a very strong explosive attack straight forward. This is best used as youre closing in for a jump slam or hitting the enemy with your Special attack.\n

    Swarmer shoots a group of small projectiles at your target. Using this as your opening salvo puts a lot of pressure on whoever youre trying to take down.

    Each car has its own special ability, which well detail for you later. Special attacks recharge over time and can hold three charges, so youll have plenty of opportunities to let em rip.

    You also can scour maps for hidden health pickups, including a special health gain easter-egg in each level. Additionally, as youre driving around youll pick up boost energy nodes that will fill your boost meter.\n

    Go fast, get big guns, go wild!

    If youre new here, WRECKAGE is a car combat brawler and spiritual successor to Twisted Metal 1 & 2. Its half bar fight, half dog pile, pure road rage. Upgrade your vehicle, mount your guns, and fight for your right to survive the wastelands of a post-apocalyptic South Florida.

    Theres so much to do yet, but we cannot wait for you to get your hands on our demo in about two weeks. So to help you prepare, were going to showcase some of the core systems in the game!

    Lock-on System, Aerial Dodge, and Jump Slams

    WRECKAGE features a lock-on system for breezy enemy targeting. Normal attacks are full-auto, and will track toward your target when youre locked on.Adding lock-on doesnt mean for easy wins though: youll still need to line up shots for the bullets to actually hit your target.

    Lock-on serves another purpose aerial dodges and jump slams. In the spirit of WRECKAGE being a brawler game, you can launch your cars into the air with SPACE, tap it again to dodge, or if youre locked-on and in range, slam violently into your opponent. With so many explosions, specials, and mines being deployed in these arenas, we felt it was important to give players a way to be more in control.

    If youve ever wondered what its like to reenact SuperSlam with a 2-ton rust bucket, youll be right at home.

    Wreckage Playtest is open!

    Hey all!

    We attended MAGFest 2024 last weekend and had a blast!

    Our booth was setup for 1-4 player couch co-op, versus, or singleplayer campaign. Tons of people stopped by to sit on our couch and play. From that, we found bugs, we found some mechanics were confusing - but we also found that people really *really* enjoyed the game despite the minor snags.

    We've done a lot of cleanup in the past few days and will be doing even more as the week goes on... So it's time to make it live in a limited capacity!

    Milestone #1: Store page is live!

    This is a big milestone for us -- we got the store page up!

    Wreckage is a labor of love to the car combat genre, Twisted Metal, Vigilante 8, Carmageddon, even that weird one where you played as a tax driver in a dystopian cyber future with hood mounted rocket launchers... but it's also a dedication to our home state of Florida where we grew up and call home from time to time. The vehicles are all inspired by ones we've seen here, and every arena is based on a major Florida landmark that we've visited ourselves. The wildlife, the weather, the chaos of growing up in this weird state; it's all here.

    We started this journey 5 years ago, as an on-again off-again project but it's time to take it home. We'll be continuing to work on this throughout the year, getting all of our maps, bosses, and singleplayer driver story campaigns completed.
