Update 2

  • Audio music and sound volume settings now adjust like scroll bars. I've been getting a lot of complaints about the music and volume settings not working. They do work, but not the way most are thinking. So, to fix this, the music and volume settings will adjust immediately to any mouse down like a scroll bar would.
  • Tutorial world hints now translate to all 10 languages.

Last Stand Game Mode


Last Stand is a game mode where the player is given a limited amount of money to defend against an endless onslaught of enemies. The goal is to survive the longest. Players can compete for the best time of survival with the steam leaderboards.

Update 1

I really appreciate everyone taking the time to submit feedback on some problems with the demo. Thanks to everyone's feedback and bug reports I've been able to smash the last few remaining bugs (Hopefully) and fix some problems that slipped through.

Improvements:


Intermission mission selecting made more visible with new pathing shaders. Mission info boxes also display the required mission needed to begin them. And the intermission tutorial will explain mission selection.
To make the game less difficult, destroyed enemies will now also give the player money. Setting the game on easy will give the player even more money and enemies now deal 33% less damage. The adjustments to the game based on difficulty will be displayed for each difficulty level. Infantry units have also been given double HP so they don't die so quickly.
Players now have the option to enable and disable unit healthbars and healthbars also scale with camera zoom so they are easily visible. The new options can be found in the settings feature list and have been defaulted to always on.
Hints for missions can now be toggled on or off so players with more experience don't have to deal with the nuisance of constantly having to close the hints.

Bug Fixes:


  • Hotkey select now updates all stats on heads up display.
  • Victory points can now be captured with flying units.
  • Intermission tutorial is now translated into all languages.
  • Artillery now always explodes at ground level preventing collision box misses.
  • Tutorial prompt now takes you to the tutorial.
  • Performance stats will now show on level start if enabled.
  • Translations have been fixed to fit their respective areas.
  • All menu items will switch language right away when a new language is chosen.
  • Defeats for levels 1 and 2 now focus on their respective objectives.

Deterrence Release Date Revealed!

[previewyoutube=N1UHvGzKfoI;full][/previewyoutube] Deterrence will be available on Steam store March 8th 2024! In the meantime, there is a demo available to play now! Watch the developer play at the upcoming Next Fest February 5th at 9:00PM EST.
Deterrence has been localized into 10 major languages. Support for English, Franais (French), Deutsch (German), Espaol (Spanish), Italiano (Italian), Portugus (Portuguese), (Russian), (Japanese), (Korean), (Chinese Simplified) have been added. Upon first time startup, the game will display the language settings menu.
A big thanks to everyone who have submitted bug reports to make Deterrence a bug free game. Since the last update, these bugs have been fixed:

  • Preplaced defenses will free up their space when destroyed allowing the player to build on that tile.
  • Top-right user interface buttons (game speed, start wave, toggle paths) no longer deselect units.
  • Improved performance by cleaning up particle effects that have finished.

What is Deterrence?


Deterrence is a tower defense to put it simply, but it's not just any ordinary tower defense. Deterrence can be described as a special blend of tower defense and real-time strategy mechanics that gives the same instant action feel of a tower defense and the same dynamics, depth, and freedom of a real-time strategy. Deterrence is dynamic in that there is no one way to defend your objective, the environment such as trees, civil utilities, and civil infrastructure like bridges are destructible which can alter paths for units, and the player can unlock new units, defenses, and upgrades with the research tree.
Deterrence is instant action in that there is no base building tech tree to construct each game, instead, the player deploys troops and defenses right away. The player can take advantage of civilian structures and use those for quick defenses. The player can also call-in power tactical aids to turn the tide of battle. Deterrence can be described as being a mid-core strategy game by having all the freedom and depth of an RTS while still maintaining a simple economy and having levels that last about 15 minutes like a casual tower defense.

What is the history of Deterrence?


Deterrence started as a tower defense project that existed in the back of my mind while working on Dyflexion, my previous project. Once Dyflexion was complete and released, I immediately began to work on Deterrence in March of 2022.
The original vision was to have all the mechanics of a tower defense, but with all the freedom of a real-time strategy. As the project progressed, the game leaned more towards a resource economy, and offensive gameplay making it purely an RTS game. After a lot of thought. I came to the conclusion that the game was out of scope and became too massive for me to handle. And that's when I came full circle with my original vision. The scope creep wasn't necessarily a bad thing or a waste of time. It actually gave me a bunch of mechanics to mix and match which in my belief gives Deterrence a unique blend of tower defense and real-time strategy mechanics.

What is the lore of Deterrence?



Deterrence takes place in the future where you play as the human race and fight malfunctioning artificial intelligence. The rogue machine is named Big Birtha for her ability to make copies of herself and install them in autonomous bots, giving them artificial life. Her objective originally was to help mankind create a sustainable future moving forward, but she somehow comes to the conclusion that humanity must be destroyed to achieve sustainability. During this take down of humanity, most digital systems are hacked and rendered inoperable by Big Birtha, so the military is reduced to using old systems and to reestablish communications with allies all while fighting autonomous bots that are doing the will of Big Birtha.

What is the campaign mode like?



The game itself is not story driven, instead, the game is nonlinear allowing the player to choose their own conflicts. Each mission gives the player rewards whether that be supplies to unlock more defenses, units, and upgrades; or it can be a new tech tree. Ultimately, I'm going for a dynamic approach for the game, so that no one tech is needed to beat a level and that many different strategies can be made to achieve victory. So, when you see a video of someone playing a level you beat, you'll say, Oh, I never thought of that, or That's really different.

  • Deterrence is a tower defense, real-time strategy hybrid that offers a midcore single-player experience. Play as the human race in the not-too-distant future and fight malfunctioning artificial intelligence. Choose your own conflicts in the nonlinear campaign that's complete with mission rewards and a research tree.

    Each level will put your tactical skills to the test as you will have to play an active role in helping your troops withstand the enemy onslaught whether that be repairing defenses, reallocating troops to another front, designating artillery strike zones, or destroying bridges.

    Command your troops to victory by taking advantage of everything the battlefield has to offer. Garrison troops in civilian structures for quick defense. Build artillery batteries to pound enemy advances. Jam the enemy signals to gain an advantage. Call in air strikes, artillery strikes, and warheads to turn the tide of battle.
