1.1.0 Vampire Update

Happy Halloween! This is our first major content update for Usurper, including an all new deck to play in Campaign, with a unique Ruler (The Count) and rules. We hope you enjoy it!

  • Features
    • Added new Vampire Deck (unlocked at Level 9)
    • Added Gameplay Tips to round won/lost screens

1.0.6 AI Improvements Patch

This is a minor patch addressing concerns about the intelligence of AI opponents in single player, both at low and high skill levels. Also included are various quality of life improvements and bug fixes.

  • AI Improvements
    • On all decrees higher than 0, opponents now always try to play the best move on all rounds.
    • Opponents no longer consider player negative movement tiles (from Decree 6) to be defended
    • Opponents are more aggressive with checking the player Ruler
    • Opponents are more careful to avoid losing pieces to ranged attacks
    • Opponents are less likely to place a unit on a tile that the Ruler needs to move to in order to avoid checkmate
    • Opponents are now easier on Decree -1, and before the player reaches experience Level 3
  • Quality of Life
    • Improved spacing of text in Gambit panel
    • Replaced word "pieces" with "units" in deck overview panel in deck selection screen
    • Pause button now closes card preview upon resuming game
    • Player Experience Rewards panel speed now scales with animation speed setting
    • History: Clearing recorded games now immediately activates "No Recorded Games Found" text
    • History: Clear recorded games button no longer clickable if no recorded games are found
    • Replaced "selectable" pulse effect for black pieces with a darker one in local and online multiplayer, in order to make them more distinct from white pieces
    • Updated tyrant description to make it clearer that it resurrects player units on capture
    • Removed mouse offset when dragging, so dragged cards/pieces are always centered on the mouse (should make dragging more precise)
  • Bug Fixes
    • Demoter's Gambit can no longer choose a card that costs 0
    • Caliph now displays check when attacking player Ruler with jump attacks
    • "Negative Right" upgrade from Decree 6 no longer turns into "Negative Left" upgrade when loading save
    • Fixed bug where "Play X or fewer units" challenge would increase too quickly after rewinding
    • Hovering over the enemy Ruler no longer shows player ranged attacks from player upgrades if both rulers are the same (e.g. King vs King)
    • Savant achievement now properly unlocks when Index is filled
    • Playing practice mode no longer causes round panel in campaign to say "Practice" instead of the correct round
    • Full screen settings now properly load on game start
    • Losing in a tie due to Overtime now prompts the player to use a rewind in the campaign
    • Right clicking on Ronin boss now shows Jump Tile tooltip
    • Autarch can no longer place stolen units on tiles destroyed by overtime
    • Fixed bug where empty rooms were not immediately being closed in Online Multiplayer
    • Lookout, Marksman, and Strider can now do Ranged Attacks in Online Multiplayer
    • Resetting unlocks now resets player records
    • Custom deck button in deck selection screen is now locked if Custom Decks have not been unlocked
    • Disabled User Analytics (was leading to bugs resulting in soft locks)
    • Starting Gambit panel on Round 0 now says 1/1 instead of 1/2
    • Fixed bugs relating to overlapping upgrades when playing Precision deck in campaign

1.0.5 Minor Balance Patch

Thank you to everyone who has purchased a copy of Usurper, we hope you are having a great time with the game! We have some early balance changes and bug fixes we would like to share with you. Our next patch after this will likely target AI improvements to make the single player modes more fun at all player skill levels.

  • Balance Changes
    • Vizier buff: Vizier moveset changed to be more offensively powerful (fewer movement tiles, more attack tiles)
    • Lender's Gambit rework: New effect is "Your lowest cost card costs 1 less Power permanently" (old effect: "Your 1 cost cards cost 0 Power for one round.")
  • Quality of Life changes
    • Changed starting gambit to be based on reaching round 3 instead of beating round 3
    • Added text tooltip to gambit panel indicating that you need to reach the boss to receive different options before round 1
    • Added text tooltip to upgrade panel indicating that newly chosen upgrades overwrite previous tiles
    • Added grey cover behind deck panel when viewing deck at the end of a run
    • Deck Tutorials in Deck Selection screen can now be activated by preview button (right click or Y on xbox controller)
    • When using a controller, the cursor can no longer be moved outside the border of the screen
    • Added marker during "Reach opposite side of the board challenge" to show tiles
  • Bug Fixes
    • Fixed bug where player would not appear in check when attacked by Ronin jump tiles
    • Elite gambit and demoter's gambit no longer always promote lowest cost units
    • Fixed starting power and power-per-turn of Pharaoh Regent so that it now scales with Round
    • Fixed bug where history and pause buttons would be inactive after drawing cards
    • Added logic to make sure the same card can't be targeted by a special gambit (with a tag on the card) more than twice
    • Fixed UI bug where unlock panel for each card in Deck Creation would not fit to the size of the textbox
    • Fixed UI bug where Power and Reserves color in opponent panel would sometimes mismatch in local multiplayer
    • Cards can now be previewed in all deck selection screens, not just campaign
    • Fixed bug where board tiles were not getting cleared properly when doing a ranged capture with the Sacrifice deck
    • Fixed bug where Armorer's Gambit could give locked ranged units
    • Fixed bug where Jester's Gambit did not adjust reserves properly in Sacrifice Deck
    • Fixed bug where main soundtrack was not looping properly
    • Fixed bug where "win a run with X decks" achievements would not be immediately unlocked

This will be the final major content patch for the demo in preparation for the 1.0 release. Thank you to everyone who played the demo, and we look forward to showing off the full game on September 9th! Patch notes:

Patch 0.71 - Demo Feedback Update

In this update we want to address feedback and bug reports that arose during Next Fest, while also giving players a few new tools to play with to make drafting cards more enjoyable as early as Level 1.

  • New Features
    • 3 new Kingdom cards are draftable at level 1
    • Steed - This alternate variant of the Knight allows for quickly jumping over enemy pieces before making a tactical backwards retreat to get just the right fork.
    • Paladin - Combine the strengths of both the Knight and the Bishop to control the battlefield. Hop over units and switch from dark squares to light squares for the perfect attack.
    • Princess - This cheaper variant of the Queen may not be able to charge forward, but it still packs a punch. Force your opponent to the sides of the board and deliver a decisive checkmate.
  • Balance Changes
    • Increased placement range of Legion
  • Quality of Life
    • Improved soundtrack loop
    • Pieces can now be dragged to move
    • Mouse scroll wheel can now be used to quickly cycle through cards when viewing deck
    • Set target framerate to 60 by default

    • Replaced thin red outline for overtime highlight

Usurper offers a unique take on the standard Chess formula. Start each game with only a King and work your way up to a powerful army by purchasing pieces from your deck.

Unique Pieces and Mechanics

Play with completely new pieces with interesting move sets. Be sure to finish off your opponent quickly or risk going into Overtime, where the board itself is damaged and the tide of battle can suddenly shift.

Choose Your Playstyle
