Big April Update!

What's in this update?

  • A new, cooler, score screen. It looks like handwriting!
  • 4 new tracks!
  • A few quality of life improvements; now you can rebind the UI controls and use the Space bar for playing notes, and there's a wide mode available.

What's this about a new score screen?

Well, before the score screen was very utilitarian, it had a lot of info, but you had to scroll through it and it wasn't as exciting. It was also very quiet as it didn't have any music. Now, when you've finished a track and want to view your score, the score sheet is dropped onto your screen, and the scores are handwritten one by one. It's a pretty cool effect, I had to write numbers backwards with a black-to-red digital pen to make it work, but it was definitely worth it. Now viewing your score is a much more pleasant experience. It also now has some music to go along with it!

What are the new tracks?

A score to settle! - This is the music that goes in the score screen; as such it's also available in the demo version. It has three playable variants other than the empty one used for the score screen itself. The first is on the easier side but not too easy. The second is pretty hard as you play a barrage of highly randomized and echoing notes. The third one is ridiculously hard as the echoes are changed into ghost notes. 4~ Quatre notes - You've asked for it, and I hear you. This collection is exclusively 4-key! First track is on the easier side but still a bit tricky since some notes fall in the offbeats. The second is a step up, and the third is getting a bit challenging, but nothing too bad if you're experienced with 4-key games. Marcia incessante del progresso - This was a pretty fun experiment, the idea is that the tempo of the song always increases until it is double what it was at the beginning, after which it halves and loops back. The collection as a whole is not too hard though, the first two tracks are 4-key, with the first one being quite beginner friendly, and the second, third, and fourth tracks are the same version of the song, except with 4, 6 and 8 keys respectively. It's a fun track if you want to practice going from 4k to 6k. And finally, the collection I'm most excited to share with you... Distant Duet (by fizzd) - This collection is coming from a rhythm game I really like, Rhythm Doctor! They've been happy to collab, so I made a cover of one of my favorite tracks from the game, Distant Duet, a beautiful piano track. To pay homage to Rhythm Doctor's one-button gameplay, and to have a really beautiful track for those new to rhythm games, the first track in the collection only uses one key. You essentially have to tap the same notes you would've had to in Rhythm Doctor! Except in this version it is significantly easier. Still, I recommend checking our Rhythm Doctor if you like this track, it's an amazing rhythm game. The second track on the other hand has you play the piano melody. It's really fun, definitely on the medium-harder side but it's quite different from other tracks in EternAlgoRhythm as it doesn't have any randomization.

What's coming next?

I'll be working a bit more on my upcoming game, which I will be announcing soon. It's going to be a pretty fun puzzle game with replayable co-op multiplayer (as well as a solid single player mode). But this doesn't mean development on EternAlgoRhythm has stopped, on the contrary. The next major feature I want to add is some leaderboards, and I'll also want to make a few more tracks every now and then. You can expect this next update sometime this summer. By the way, if there's any type of track you'd like to play let me know, I really like having some inspiration from requests. I should also be able to sneak in any feature requests you have if they're not too complex.

EternAlgoRhythm gets the Proceduralism Award from the GDWC!

EternAlgoRhythm has won a Top 5 spot for the Proceduralism Award in the Game Development World Championship for the 2024 Winter Season!
I will be honest, I was very surprised to hear the news, and I'm very grateful to the organisers and judges of the GDWC. Thanks to everyone who's supported the game!

What's coming next?

Hi all, how's everything going? You may wonder if there'll be any new updates to EternAlgoRhythm. I'm planning to create new tracks for the game, and launch them all together in the next big update, which will also include a new major feature for the game. This update should be taking place later this year. If you report any bugs, or request any small features, there would be minor updates with those releasing between now and the big update; for example there's just been an update to mute the game when you set the volume to zero (previously it just made it very quiet). You can report bugs, request features, or just say hi in the discord https://discord.gg/p4rGF2QAXW. I have also begun working on my next game, which will be a sequel to one of my game jam games. It'll be a puzzle game with singleplayer, local co-op and hopefully online co-op modes.

Volume 0 + Windows icon

This is a small patch with bugfixes. Now setting the game's main volume to zero mutes all the audio as is expected. The Windows version of the game should also have its icon.

New note style: Rectangle!

I've added a new note style for players who prefer rectangular notes similar to other vertical scrolling rhythm games. This new style is also wider when you're playing with 6 notes or fewer.

[ 2024-08-26 16:25:04 CET ] [ Original post ]

Changing the staff!

You can now change the staff in the graphics settings, this changes the background behind the notes. Depending on how many notes you're playing with, some of the new backgrounds might be more or less suitable, so be sure to check out which one works best for you!

[ 2024-08-21 21:11:20 CET ] [ Original post ]

Wider fewer keys

Now the visual key presses also match the new spacing when reducing the number of keys!

[ 2024-08-19 22:40:27 CET ] [ Original post ]

Wider gameplay when having a smaller number of keys

Now when you select 2-6 keys in the number of keys, they will be arranged in a wider setup to make it easier to read the patterns. Also now the input textbox should be above the Back button.

EternAlgoRhythm Stream

I'll be streaming tonight. I'll be playing the tracks that are not available in the demo this time, so be sure to check out the stream if you'd like a preview of the tracks, or if you just want to listen to some nice music. The start of the stream will be at 21:00 GMT 17:00 EST 14:00 PST

Hotfix + new features

I've just added a feature that was requested a couple of days ago; to have an option to have the key names inside the notes. This turned out to be quite easy to implement, so it's now in the game! In the Graphics settings, you can change the note interior from "Classic" to "Key" to get this effect.
Another new feature is that your choice of settings is now saved instead of resetting each time you reopen the game! My dev friend told me players like this message more than saying "I fixed a bug where I forgot to comment out the debug code that resets the settings file for testing purposes". Anyway the player who reported that bug also thought it'd be nice to be able to press space to pause the game (You could and still can use the ESC key to pause the game, but I think this was only tangentially implied in the tutorial). Anyway since the space bar wasn't doing anything else during gameplay, now it pauses the game.

EternAlgoRhythm Editor Tutorial Part 0 and Part 1 released!

EternAlgoRhythm has an editor where you can create your own collections with algorithms to create both music and levels. It is and will always be available within the demo, so you won't need the full version if you'd like to try your hand at creating your own music. And now, its tutorials are finally available! In Part 0: Minimal Setup, we see the steps required to create a collection and have some gameplay in it. [previewyoutube=YAhekD9FAs0;full][/previewyoutube] In Part 1: earscript basics, where we learn about the scripting language powering EternAlgoRhythm's procedural generation, and we use it to make our collection a bit fancier! Launch trailer now available!

[previewyoutube=IsHe3Xlif2A;full][/previewyoutube] We now have a launch trailer! It's mainly showing gameplay, and how you can tackle challenging tracks by reducing the number of keys or slowing down the tempo of the music. In the trailer, we also introduce an exciting new feature! You can now change the instruments of the tracks as a track modification. This feature will be also available in the demo when the game releases on the 16th of August!

Introducing Free Input Mode

For the game release on the 16th of August, both EternAlgoRhythm and its demo will have access to two new input modes; free and strict. But what are these anyway? To understand what these new input modes do, we need to first consider what the standard input mode does.

Standard Input Mode

When you don't tap any keys in your keyboard, the notes you see are automatically played by the game engine when they reach the judgement line. Furthermore, when you do tap keys, two things can happen:
  • If the key tap is close to a note, the game will recognize that you want to tap this note and adjust the timing so that you hear the note at the time it's supposed to be played.
  • If the key tap isn't close to a note, the game will say this is a free note, and play the corresponding sound.
This has some advantages and disadvantages;
  • You get to hear the song as it's meant to be played in terms of timing, but you can still improvise whenever you want.
  • When you miss a note and tap another key, you'll hear both the key you tapped (as a free note) and the one that you were supposed to tap; this often makes it easy to tell if you missed the note.
  • It's harder to tell if you have the right timing when you press the correct note, though you can still know by the amount of particles the new particle system throws; the more, the better.

Free Input Mode

In free input mode, the game leaves all notes to you and doesn't automatically play any of the notes you're responsible for (it'll still play the other instruments, and any notes you're not playing if you reduce the number of keys to play). In other words, all notes are free. The advantages and disadvantages change;
  • You get total freedom to improvise anything you want if you don't want to follow the notes.
  • You can easily tell if you are missing the right timing because the notes you tap will sound too early or too late compared to the other instruments.
  • It's harder to tell through sound cues if you're missing any notes when you tap a different key, since you'll only hear the note you tapped, though you'll be able to tell through the notes you see not being tapped.

Strict Mode

For completeness sake, there is also strict mode, where there are no free notes; only the notes you're supposed to tap are heard. If you don't like to improvise, and don't want to hear mistakes when you tap a different key from the one you're supposed to, this is the input mode for you.

Which mode should I play?

In a way Standard mode is a combination of Strict mode and Free mode, which will be suitable for most new players. If you're at the stage where you want to improve by tapping the right keys, Standard mode might work best for you. If you're at the stage where you want to improve by tapping the keys at the perfect moment, Free mode might help you the most.
