Hi all, how's everything going? You may wonder if there'll be any new updates to EternAlgoRhythm. I'm planning to create new tracks for the game, and launch them all together in the next big update, which will also include a new major feature for the game. This update should be taking place later this year. If you report any bugs, or request any small features, there would be minor updates with those releasing between now and the big update; for example there's just been an update to mute the game when you set the volume to zero (previously it just made it very quiet). You can report bugs, request features, or just say hi in the discord https://discord.gg/p4rGF2QAXW. I have also begun working on my next game, which will be a sequel to one of my game jam games. It'll be a puzzle game with singleplayer, local co-op and hopefully online co-op modes.
This is a small patch with bugfixes. Now setting the game's main volume to zero mutes all the audio as is expected. The Windows version of the game should also have its icon.
I've added a new note style for players who prefer rectangular notes similar to other vertical scrolling rhythm games. This new style is also wider when you're playing with 6 notes or fewer.
You can now change the staff in the graphics settings, this changes the background behind the notes. Depending on how many notes you're playing with, some of the new backgrounds might be more or less suitable, so be sure to check out which one works best for you!
Now the visual key presses also match the new spacing when reducing the number of keys!
Now when you select 2-6 keys in the number of keys, they will be arranged in a wider setup to make it easier to read the patterns. Also now the input textbox should be above the Back button.
I'll be streaming tonight. I'll be playing the tracks that are not available in the demo this time, so be sure to check out the stream if you'd like a preview of the tracks, or if you just want to listen to some nice music. The start of the stream will be at 21:00 GMT 17:00 EST 14:00 PST
I've just added a feature that was requested a couple of days ago; to have an option to have the key names inside the notes. This turned out to be quite easy to implement, so it's now in the game! In the Graphics settings, you can change the note interior from "Classic" to "Key" to get this effect.
Another new feature is that your choice of settings is now saved instead of resetting each time you reopen the game! My dev friend told me players like this message more than saying "I fixed a bug where I forgot to comment out the debug code that resets the settings file for testing purposes".
Anyway the player who reported that bug also thought it'd be nice to be able to press space to pause the game (You could and still can use the ESC key to pause the game, but I think this was only tangentially implied in the tutorial). Anyway since the space bar wasn't doing anything else during gameplay, now it pauses the game.
EternAlgoRhythm is out now on PC! Join the discord if you have any questions, want to make your own music in EAR, or just want to say hi! https://discord.gg/p4rGF2QAXW [previewyoutube=IsHe3Xlif2A;full][/previewyoutube]
EternAlgoRhythm has an editor where you can create your own collections with algorithms to create both music and levels. It is and will always be available within the demo, so you won't need the full version if you'd like to try your hand at creating your own music. And now, its tutorials are finally available! In Part 0: Minimal Setup, we see the steps required to create a collection and have some gameplay in it. [previewyoutube=YAhekD9FAs0;full][/previewyoutube] In Part 1: earscript basics, where we learn about the scripting language powering EternAlgoRhythm's procedural generation, and we use it to make our collection a bit fancier! [previewyoutube=IsHe3Xlif2A;full][/previewyoutube] We now have a launch trailer! It's mainly showing gameplay, and how you can tackle challenging tracks by reducing the number of keys or slowing down the tempo of the music. In the trailer, we also introduce an exciting new feature! You can now change the instruments of the tracks as a track modification. This feature will be also available in the demo when the game releases on the 16th of August!
For the game release on the 16th of August, both EternAlgoRhythm and its demo will have access to two new input modes; free and strict. But what are these anyway? To understand what these new input modes do, we need to first consider what the standard input mode does.
Standard Input Mode
When you don't tap any keys in your keyboard, the notes you see are automatically played by the game engine when they reach the judgement line. Furthermore, when you do tap keys, two things can happen:
- If the key tap is close to a note, the game will recognize that you want to tap this note and adjust the timing so that you hear the note at the time it's supposed to be played.
- If the key tap isn't close to a note, the game will say this is a free note, and play the corresponding sound.
- You get to hear the song as it's meant to be played in terms of timing, but you can still improvise whenever you want.
- When you miss a note and tap another key, you'll hear both the key you tapped (as a free note) and the one that you were supposed to tap; this often makes it easy to tell if you missed the note.
- It's harder to tell if you have the right timing when you press the correct note, though you can still know by the amount of particles the new particle system throws; the more, the better.
Free Input Mode
In free input mode, the game leaves all notes to you and doesn't automatically play any of the notes you're responsible for (it'll still play the other instruments, and any notes you're not playing if you reduce the number of keys to play). In other words, all notes are free. The advantages and disadvantages change;
- You get total freedom to improvise anything you want if you don't want to follow the notes.
- You can easily tell if you are missing the right timing because the notes you tap will sound too early or too late compared to the other instruments.
- It's harder to tell through sound cues if you're missing any notes when you tap a different key, since you'll only hear the note you tapped, though you'll be able to tell through the notes you see not being tapped.
Strict Mode
For completeness sake, there is also strict mode, where there are no free notes; only the notes you're supposed to tap are heard. If you don't like to improvise, and don't want to hear mistakes when you tap a different key from the one you're supposed to, this is the input mode for you.
Which mode should I play?
In a way Standard mode is a combination of Strict mode and Free mode, which will be suitable for most new players. If you're at the stage where you want to improve by tapping the right keys, Standard mode might work best for you. If you're at the stage where you want to improve by tapping the keys at the perfect moment, Free mode might help you the most.
I'll be playing EternAlgoRhythm, a rhythm game with procedurally generated music.
