Major Update - Version 0.2.0

Hello everyone, Version 0.2.0 introduces exciting updates to game mechanics and resource management. Share your feedback in the comments or on Discord, let us know what you love and what could be improved! Highlights Difficulty Settings: A dropdown menu now controls overall gameplay settings, replacing the day/night cycle and outlaw disable options. Choose from the following: Easy: No raids, always daytime, stable resources. Normal: Raids from Day 2, gradual resource decline. Hard: Raids from Day 1, tougher raids, faster resource decline, no respawns or saves. Hardcore: Raids from Day 1, tougher raids, one life, resource scarcity, no respawns or saves. Example for Normal Difficulty: Day 1: Peaceful exploration Day 2: The bear raid begins, resources start declining a bit and aggressive NPCs begin to spawn. Day 3+: NPC raids intensify with grenades. Day 5+: Raids include C4, making survival even tougher Day 6+... A detailed explanation can be found in our wiki. Raids now start at moonrise, with distinct music playing depending on whether a raid is triggered or it's a peaceful night. The bear attack from placing raw meat in a campfire has been removed, along with the raid triggered by defeating the red soldier near the bunker. Raids are now predictable, providing a clear rhythm and game loop. We hope that the combination of PvP and PvE game modes, along with the variety of difficulty options, offers something for everyone. New Vending Machine System: Vending machines are now categorized into Crafting, Food, and Ammunition, making them easier to use and navigate. Resource Management: Adjusted loot drops, crafting materials, resource costs, and stack sizes to balance loot and prevent inventory overflow. Weapon Upgrade: Improved firing angles make it easier to hit targets from higher or lower positions. We are truly excited to hear your thoughts on the changes and the direction were taking with the game. Your feedback is incredibly valuable, so please share your impressions with us in the comments, on Discord, or in the Steam Forums! The game will continue to have the three main modes: PvP (Player vs. Player), PvE (Player vs. Environment), and Deathmatch. These will stay in the game to let players choose how they want to play, whether it's teaming up, fighting other players, or competing in all-out battles.
Bug Fixes & Improvements - Save game limits can now be set individually - Peaceful nights and raid events now feature appropriate soundtracks - Highwalls can no longer be placed too close together - Placement of large items like beds and large wood boxes is now easier, even near fuse boxes - Boat Interaction: Entering boats near other items now works as intended - Fixed translation error when hammer breaks - Reduced durability wear for tools and weapons - Balanced weapon stats: pistols are stronger, arrows slightly weaker - Resolved NPC bug with floating chickens and wandering behavior - Clearing leftover buildings and floating items better. Reminder: -The free early adopter shirt skin drop will no longer be available after this update. -All Xmas DLC skins, like Santas Cap and Evergreen Shirt, will not drop anymore until next Christmas. -The Xmas Tree will no longer be craftable. Don't miss out on our Survivors Pack DLC or the stunning Serpent's Dawn Skin Pack. Happy gaming! Markus & Simon Join our community on Discord and test Ruins To Fortress on Steam. Happy Holidays from the Ruins to Fortress Team!

To all our players celebrating Christmas, the holidays, or simply enjoying a festive season, we wish you warmth, joy, and wonderful moments. And to those who dont celebrate, we hope youre having a peaceful and cozy end to the year. We want to take this moment to express our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has supported us, shared valuable feedback, and purchased our DLC. Your involvement means the world to us and helps shape Ruins to Fortress into a better experience for all. We also want to address an issue many of you have raised: cheaters. This has been a significant problem that we unfortunately underestimated. While we anticipated some cheating, we assumed it would be limited to gaining small advantages. Sadly, weve realized that many cheaters are primarily focused on ruining the experience for others. We understand how frustrating it is to invest hours into building a beautiful base, only to have it destroyed in seconds. The negative reviews weve received about this are entirely valid, and we hear you loud and clear. We are committed to tackling this issue. As a result, our first development sprint in the new year will prioritize fixing this issue over introducing new features. That said, we still have exciting plans for early 2025: - Character Customization: A character editor to let you fully personalize your player avatar, with even more customization options coming later. - New PvE Content: Expect new maps, enemies, unique locations, and fresh challenges to enhance the PvE experience. Upcoming Skinpack: Serpent's Dawn Our seasonal Christmas event will wrap up in January and seamlessly transition into the launch of our first skin pack: Serpent's Dawn. This pack is designed to celebrate the Year of the Snake while highlighting and honoring various Asian cultures. It features a striking collection of skins inspired by Asian traditions and aesthetics, with a predominant focus on vibrant red and golden hues. Highlights include simple yet elegant outfits, a magnificent golden axe skin, and ornate decorations for your base that capture the essence of these rich cultural influences. The Serpent's Dawn skin pack will only be available for purchase for three months and will not be in the store afterward. However, all items in the pack will be tradeable and marketable for you, meaning you can exchange or sell them with other players. Owners of the DLC who log in during the event period will receive one of the skins from the pack for freeso dont miss out!
The revenue from the DLC and skin packs will help us ensure the continued development of Ruins to Fortress and allow us to dedicate more time to improving and expanding the game. Your support directly contributes to making Ruins to Fortress the best experience it can be. Once again, thank you for being part of the Ruins to Fortress journey. Your support and passion make it all possible. For those eager to stay up-to-date, we are sharing more detailed milestone plans on our Discord server, where youll also find more regular updates on our progress. Join us there to be part of the journey and share your feedback! We wish you all a happy holiday season and a fantastic start to the new year. Lets make 2025 unforgettable together! Warm regards, The Ruins to Fortress Team

Launch Day Recap: A Big Thank You! Gratitude, Challenges, and Moving Forward!

Thank you for playing Ruins to Fortress in its early days!

Were happy to see the game up and running for most player, our biggest fear was things not starting at all. We even peaked at around 400 players! There were some initial issues with the free early adopter skin shirt not dropping, but that should be resolved now. Mago and I had a great time playing on the official servers with the community at the startabout 25 players joined in. It was chaotic (in the best way)! We were impressed by how quickly everyone picked up the mechanics. Were a small two-person indie dev/artist team, and playing with you or watching your streams has been incredibly valuable. Its helped us identify bottlenecks in the game and even stress-test the servers. That said, weve already received reports of cheating, especially on the official servers. Some high player count servers even crashed at one point! Addressing these issues is a priority, and well be trying to scaling up our efforts while the game is in Early Access. Cheating is always a cat-and-mouse game, but were on it. Currently, if youre hosting a game, you can set a password or use the console to kick and ban players as needed. Were thinking about the best strategies and anti-cheat measures to implement in the coming months. We understand how frustrating it can be to enjoy the game for six hours, only to have a cheater destroy your base in an instant. If you have a saved game, you can reload it and set your server to password-protected to prevent this from happening again. Were reviewing all the improvement suggestions and bug reports youve shared. Ill focus on addressing the most urgent issues first and schedule the rest for future updates.

The Road Ahead - Release, Roadmap and Pricing

First of all, we want to thank you for 5000 wishlist additions! This means a lot to us and motivates us to keep going. The Open World Survival Crafting Fest and the Steam Next Fest were successful promotional events that brought us many new players who tested our demo. This resulted in many bug fixes, especially in so-called edge cases, meaning errors in situations that rarely occur. We also received many improvement suggestions, which we have discussed both internally and with you. Even though we had a specific internal plan, many goals for the future were still vague. Therefore, we have, together with you, determined which feature packages should be completed before the release and created a roadmap. We also considered how we could monetize our game to ensure continued development.

Roadmap

Electricity Update

- Implement power generators - Electric lights - Satoshi miners - Some more gadgets

Animal Taming Update

- Adding tameable creatures with unique abilities

Raid Kits Update

- Create specialized equipment sets for different raiding strategies - Balance raid kits for fair and exciting gameplay

Cosmetic Skins Update

- Design a variety of skins for characters and equipment

Multiple Maps and Biomes Update

- Develop distinct maps, each featuring unique challenges - Create diverse biomes All added features will not be feature-complete but will lay the foundation for more content to be added. The scheduled release is Friday, the 13th of December. What could go wrong?

Early Access and Pricing

After nearly two years of development, we will have implemented a large portion of the planned features and plan to go into Early Access. We see this step as essential to improve the quality and quantity of content. Before the release, we will release a post-release roadmap that will outline the path to version 1.0 and hint at what content is planned afterward. Since PvE content is very time-consuming to develop, we have decided to postpone much of it until next year and focus on PvP content until the release. As an indie game studio, it is very difficult to release a multiplayer game because you compete not only with other small indie studios but also with large studios with major titles. Most large multiplayer games are therefore free and are financed through expensive skins, pay-to-win elements, pointless in-game currencies, and unnecessary battle passes. And believe us, we hate these mechanisms as much as you do and still fall for them often enough. That is why we have decided on a model that will be attractive to you and still cover the development costs. We will start Early Access with a Free to Play model. Additionally, there will be a DLC that will unlock additional non-gameplay relevant content. This will include unlocking skins and the ability to host additional maps or game modes - joining a server with additional content will still be free. With a low, fair price, we want to ensure that as many players as possible can afford this upgrade and support us. So far, these are the current plans. Of course, these can still change, so please don't be mad at us if they do. What is your opinion on this? Thank you for reading.

The Demo Is Live!

Dear Community, The time has come our demo is live! For a year now, mago and crimi have been tirelessly working on this game, and we're eager to hear your feedback. For a long time, we could only test the game in small sessions, either together or with friends. But now, we believe it's ready to present you with a playable version. Currently, about 90% of our ideas have been implemented and integrated. There may still be the occasional bug lurking in the game. We hope you'll have sessions with as few bugs as possible, but please bear with us if that's not the case. To help you get started, we've prepared plenty of additional content for you: - A demo FAQ is available. - There are guides in various languages. - A wiki listing all available items among other things. As for the future of the demo: We see the demo as an ongoing public beta. After addressing initial bugs, we aim to gradually incorporate the remaining 10% and consider your feedback until we have a game that satisfies both you and us. Only then will we release the full version. Limitations of the demo: Currently, about 10% of the content is still missing. We also plan to offer different maps containing various biomes and differing in size. Later on, we hope to enable randomly generated maps. Additionally, the game world is not yet persistently saved. This means that if the server goes down, the world disappears. We aim to change this in the coming months. Furthermore, language support is currently limited to English. Although there isn't a lot of text in the game, we haven't had the opportunity yet to integrate support for multiple languages. Based on the demand we see in the demo, we currently plan to support the following languages: French, German, Spanish, Portuguese. Thanks for reading!
