Translations Update

First of all, I would like to thank everybody who has helped with translating 8-Bit Commando and the rest of the 2dengine games. The project has been a success with thousands of contributions provided by nearly a hundred translators. In order to help the project advance, 2dengine will be providing some additional features to translators. You can now change under what alias or nickname you would like to be credited. Note that it may take several weeks until the game credits are synced and pushed onto Steam. Also, please be advised that the press often treats game credits as public information. Additionally, you now have the option to delete your account and remove all contributions.

8-Bit Commando in your browser!

With the help of some cool new technology you can now play 8-Bit Commando in your browser. This is a great way to check out what the game is about and doesn't require installation.

Also, thanks to improvements in our distribution technology, the Steam version of 8-Bit Commando is now smaller and loads even faster. Don't be fooled by the mixed reviews, we've been improving and supporting this game for a long time and it certainly deserves move LVE!

Steamworks v1.51

Greeting, Commandos.

Over the last few days, we have updated 8-Bit Commando to work with the latest version of Steamworks v1.51. This will ensure that the game and its multiplayer features will continue to work properly in the future. Please update your Steam client if you have any trouble running the game.

Thank you for the support,

Replays Fix and SKULLMASTER'S ARENA

Replays Fix and SKULLMASTER'S ARENA

Greetings Commandos,
Just pushed an update that will make the game much more robust.
Prior to this update, the game used the player's resolution to keep objects on the screen.
It turns out that we can't use that method reliably in multiplayer mode.
Unfortunately this will probably break some older "replays" from the Workshop.

Please support us and check out our new game called SKULLMASTER'S ARENA:

This is an experimental update increasing the speed of the game by 20% in NORMAL and 40% in HARD mode. Note that HARD mode unlocks once you complete the game and can be changed from the options screen.

Online replays update

Greetings Commandos

8-Bit Commando uses the Steam Workshop to record and store replays which are uploaded after completing any mission. Recent updates to the game feature several improvements to the replay system. Replays can now be reviewed and downloaded in-game by going to Hiscore > Replay. Additionally, we have introduced playtime tracking so you can see which replays have been watched the most. This is an awesome way to showcase your top speedruns.

Thanks for reading and please show your support by checking out our latest game Super Chains:

Online multiplayer

It's official - the online multiplayer beta is up and running! You can start up a multiplayer session by choosing Online from the title screen.

Next, pick your favorite game mode (coop/versus/arcade) and invite somebody. Make sure you are signed into Steam chat to see which of your friends are playing too.

Lastly, there are a few things that you can do to improve your online experience:
- Play with friends who live nearby, preferably on the same continent.
- Plug into a wired connection or at least try to stay close to your wireless router.
- Close any open applications or background services connected to the internet.
- Turn off other devices connected to your home network or WIFI.

If you are having trouble please get in touch and remember to enable automatic updates for both your Steam client and the game. Thanks for reading and much LVE!

Dopefish update

Reports are coming in of a strange sea creature spotted near the docks in 8-Bit Commando. Several witnesses have identified this creature as Dopefish. Be advised that Dopefish is a notoriously elusive beast and only appears when playing on "hard" difficulty.

Dopefish lives... but it's your job to hunt him down. Show him no mercy if you want that sweet, ultra-rate achievement cred.

Thanks for reading and much LVE,

Sneaky Fixes

Greetings commandos,
Over the last few weeks, we have been updating the game quietly and improving things all around.

Better weapons
Additionally, I have went ahead and tweaked some of the game's weapons. Different weapons now work better versus certain bosses.
rockets deal extra damage to aircraft
grenades deal extra damage to vehicles
laser-based weapons deal extra damage to electronic targets
This improvement adds another dimension of strategy to the game and was suggested by Skid Row Trash in his review.

Fixed replay issues
There were several issues related to the online replay system. I have done my best to resolve these problems, but make sure to run the latest version of the game to ensure that your replays won't be lost. Unfortunately, older replays could still become incompatible in the future as we continue to update the game.

Improved controls
I have recently added a couple of fixes that focus on improving the game's controls. These fixes were inspired by Jonas Tyroller's video which provides some excellent tips on improving the controls in platformer games:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vFsJIrm2btU
Jonas' video is definitely a must-watch especially for fellow developers.

Thanks for the support and much LVE!

Butterfly effect

Greetings folks,
This is going to be a fairly technical update addressing some of the existing bugs and issues with the game. One of the biggest issues with the replay system is that it's based on deterministic input so anytime we push an update that affects the gameplay it may possibly break some of the older replays. This is due to the butterfly effect where a small change could lead to significantly different result over time. I have added a validation step that checks if the replay is good upon download. Additionally, there was a bug where your replay could be lost when uploading a worse score on the leaderboards. This should be resolved after today's update too.

Thanks for reading and check out our new title Super Chains!

Hiscore replays patch

Greetings Commandos,

We are celebrating the game's eight anniversary with another cool update! The hiscore replay system has just been patched. There were some issues where the game would fail to upload and download replays, but I'm happy to announce that it is working properly now!

You can watch the replays in three easy steps:

1. Go to the hiscore screen
2. Find a hiscore entry with a flashing star next to it
3. Click on the star to download and watch the replay

Please note that only your best entry for each mission is stored! This means that you have to beat your previous score in order to have the replay uploaded.

Thanks for reading,
2dengine

Hiscore replays (user-generated content)

Greetings Commandos,

Another exciting update is here!

Thanks to the Steam Workshop you can now replay hiscore entries submitted by other players. That's right, all hiscore entries are now considered User-Generated Content! Look for the blinking star icon to replay any hiscore entry submitted after May 10, 2019.

Also, the game is now fully compatible with 32-bit versions of Windows Vista and Windows 7. Additionally, we've fixed several other minor bugs, ensuring the game runs well on older machines.

Thanks for reading and have a nice day,
2dengine

Force feedback

Greetings Commandos! Just pushed another cool update to the game, and here is the rundown:

Force feedback
That's right, you can now experience the recoil of every bullet fired by your machine gun! This feature is optional and can be disabled from the setting along with the screenshake effect.

Automatic error reporting
We have setup an error reporting system that captures bugs and anonymously sends the details to 2dengine.com. In fact, we have already fixed a couple of bugs thanks to this new error reporting system. This is definitely going to make the game a lot more stable in the future.

Thanks for reading and much LVE,

Price, coupons demos

Greetings Commandos,

As always we try to be as transparent as possible about our games. It should be noted that 8-Bit Commando's price has been modified this was necessary because of an issue with the Steam pricing matrix and its effect on coupon drops. To make a long story short, we had to increase the price a little bit which varies depending on where you live.

Minigame update

Greetings Commandos,
As you may know, it's becoming increasingly difficult to develop games as an indie business. Given the current economic recession, the alarming number of asset flips and the devaluation of Doge coin, we have no other alternative, but to include in-game advertising.
I know... I know a lot of people are not going to be happy about this. After much consideration, 2dengine has decided to partner strictly with legit, top-tier advertisers so there is no need for concern.

Special thanks to our sponsors, Silly-Conman-Echo Productions and check out their new title Goo Chungus 174. This promising sequel is not planned for a Steam release, but should be coming next week to torrents (in Croatia). So definitely keep an eye out for that!

Also, check out 8-Bit Commando's new minigame, called Bird Hunt! This little gem is inspired by Duck Hunt and unlocks after you complete every mission in the game's story mode. Leaderboards are included too!

This update is brought to you by DPS: “Digihom Postool Service, the undisputed #1 leader when it comes to the business of #2!”

Upcoming game and a note on Steam keys

Greetings Commandos,
It is hard to believe that the game is nearing its sixth anniversary! Overall, it has been a great learning experience for us, so we'd like to thank everybody for supporting the game. Your feedback has been invaluable and in return we'd like to remain as transparent as possible.

Upcoming game
Super Chains is currently in development so join our Steam group to find out more. Some very exiting updates to Super Chains are on the way so please share your feedback, it really helps out a lot!

A note on Steam keys
If you are one of the few people who have received a key for 8-Bit Commando through any third party website, we encourage you to activate your key as soon as possible. Everyone should have had more than a year to activate their keys, and failing to do so, means that your key may not work in the future.

Thanks for taking a look and much love!

Endgame update

Greetings Commandos,

Word is in from HQ and the reviews don't look too positive. Dang it, even after operations “Revamped” and “Versus” those ungrateful SOB's are still whining! Alright, here is the plan:

We're sending you back to boot camp for a few weeks, so you should be able to move faster out there. Don't ask what I had to do, but look: I got you these special full metal jacket slugs. Just don't get too wild, since these puppies can practically eat through concrete.

...and don't expect that your mission will be any easier! Intelligence reports that the enemy is getting smarter and is building new fortifications. Damn right, you can expect 30% more content in the endgame.

So go ahead, try the demo and buy the 2Dengine bundle. What's the matter, Steam's got you lifting too many controllers?

General – out

Controls update and translation credits

Greetings, Commandos
Another patch is out, fixing a few things and introducing the game in new languages.

The controls have been improved. You can now disable specific controllers – a feature requested by several players. Also, the “Virtual Gamepad” should be available for anybody who prefers to play using a touchscreen. This is still an experimental feature and we hope to receive more feedback about it by the community. Also, there was an issue of the game failing to save custom gamepad mappings – this should be fixed and working properly as of today.

Huge thanks and shout-outs to the following people who have translated 8-Bit Commando in 13 different languages:

Gameplay and achievements

First of all, I would like to thank the Steam community and everybody who has provided suggestions on how we can improve the game.

Gameplay
We have tried to listen to feedback as much as possible and as a result, the game has improved significantly. Several levels have been redesigned to focus more on action and coop. Movement is also faster, bullets have more range and the platforming sections are easier to handle. Again, thanks to everyone who has helped or provided suggestions.

Achievements

Players can now get an overview of which achievements have been unlocked by going to Highscore -> Achievements.

Thank you for the support and hope to talk to you on the community hub.

Even more fixes and languages

Greetings commandos,
You may have noticed the game being quietly updated in the past couple of weeks. We have been fixing a number of small issues so no need to be alarmed.

Fixes

A number of other issues have been fixed too (mostly involving rendering and gameplay balance).

New Leaderboards, Achievements and Trading cards

Leaderboards
We are releasing a new set of speedrun-based leaderboards. This was a tough decision as it means that the old boards will no longer be supported. The game has changed too much so the new boards will only be tracking time.

Achievements
The game now features nine Steam achievements. The “Untouchable” achievement in particular will provide a good challenge for the more hardcore players.

Trading Cards
Seven trading cards are currently awaiting approval from Steam. Hopefully these should start dropping in the next couple of days.

Again, we thank the community and our friends here at Steam.
Please let me know if you have any suggestions or if you find any bugs.

Revamped

First, we would like to thank our friends here at Steam. We have considered your feedback and are happy to bring you an updated version of 8-Bit Commando.

What's new?

Improved controls
The game's physics system has been upgraded. The controls are much tighter and the gameplay is more fast-paced. Players can now lock their movement while shooting (by holding the jump button) and jump through platforms (by pressing down and jump).
Coop mode is more enjoyable too as players can now jump in at any checkpoint.

Cooler powerups
Thanks to the awesome feedback from the Steam community we have redesigned the weapons in the game. It's also possible to switch between available weapons by pressing the start button.

Better graphics
The game is more colorful and runs at a higher frame rate than before.
For added authenticity, the new graphics filters allow you to experience 8BC as if you're playing on an old-school CRT.

Cloud saves
Please note that the new version of 8BC uses the Steam Cloud, so your progress may be lost when you upgrade for the first time. No need to panic though, you can just
enter the following cheat code from the title screen to unlocks all levels:
UP UP UP DOWN DOWN DOWN LEFT RIGHT

What's next?
We will be rolling out different features in the upcoming few weeks.
The online hiscores and achievements will become available as soon
as we are sure everything works properly so please be patient.

Thanks again for the support and we hope to see you on the community hub!
We're looking forward to your feedback so we can make the game even better.
