Mazewar is a remake inspired by the first-ever multiplayer first-person shooter, dating back to 1973. Modernized and subtly enhanced with new mechanics, this iteration stays true to the original, honoring its legacy and giving it back to the community.
Traverse through multiple levels, battling enemy eyes, compete against friends on servers in this grid-based, vector-graphics shooter.
New features that set this version apart from the classic include:
The ability to dodge enemy fire.
Turning invisible while revealing enemies' positions.

Unlockables such as color themes to customize your visual experience.
Competitive, fast-paced, and strategic gameplay.
Take advantage of objects scattered throughout the maze to shield yourself from enemy fire.
A leaderboard to track and showcase the best players.
some bugs and performance improvements have been applied.
Ive also added a Ghosting frame accumulation / trailing effect inspired by old vector monitors from the 1970s.
The Ghosting effect can be enabled or disabled in the settings.
Below is reference footage of the original Maze (1973) running on a PDS-1.

Thank you to everyone who has shown interest in my recreation of Mazewar and supported the project so far. Feedback is always welcome.

After almost a year of work, Im finally releasing my recreation of this forgotten piece of gaming history. Mazewar may look simple on the surface, but bringing this project to life took a surprising amount of effort, especially working on it entirely by myself with the help of one audio engineer @bmichaael
I decided to release the game in its current state because I want people to actually play it, try things out, and help shape what comes next. There may still be bugs or rough edges, but your feedback is what will guide its future.
It has always amazed me that the first 3D multiplayer game in history cant be played on modern machines. That idea alone pushed me to rebuild it for todays players. Mazewar supports up to 8 players online through a simple peer-to-peer system, so you can easily jump in with friends or other players.
This project means a lot to me, and Id really appreciate any thoughts you have. Here are a few questions to help with feedback:
Feedback Questions
How do the movement and control layout feel?\nIs the dodge ability balanced?\nWhat do you think of the 5-second penalty system?\n(It was added to encourage players to dodge enemy fire instead of just trading shots.)\nAny issues with latency or connectivity?\nWhat features would you like to see next?
Feel free to share anything, positive or negative. Every comment helps.
Thanks for playing, and I hope you enjoy revisiting this piece of gaming history.
