Devblog Update 3 - Town growth | Options | Demo Prep

Hi everybody! Apologies on a bit of a delay with this post. I'm again very pro 'Only show you something when it's real and functioning' but what I might do in the future if I have a busy month or no visual progress, is just at least do a small bi-monthly post mentioning the things I'm doing.

Town growth mechanic


  • I now have a system in place for the town that will begin growing around your shop - When you start feeding the other homeless wanderers around you, more tents/shacks will begin moving in!
  • When more people move in, the more often customers will begin showing up near your shop
  • When you get your shops 'cozy bonus' high enough from decorating, the NPC houses will start upgrading into nicer quality homes (I need to still make nicer home models looking forward to that).
  • In the future, I plan on having higher quality homes spawn higher tier NPCs who will have better buying power, or also unlock certain unique buildings or NPCs
This is the very start - Only one tent living nearby
Fed some fish - Somebody else has moved in now

Options


  • Please ignore the super ugly layout and proxy art for the screenshot, its a 1st pass and just focusing on getting it working so I can test it in first few technical demos!
  • This might seem boring but it's really important for me to learn how to get basic options working before I start demoing the game - I now have fullscreen/borderless/windowed working!
  • Audio controls are now working, also default audio is 50% when you start the game (I noticed this is a issue for a lot of indie games when I watch my streamers on twitch)

Early Demo Preperations


  • In preparing for demos, I needed to focus on getting the main menu working and getting a loading screen for the game!
  • The first few demos are going to be very technical and just for a small group of friends at first - So I can just make sure the game is running on peoples computers and its installing properly. Making sure things like saving/loading is working and overall the game is functioning properly.

Future goals


  • Get the game into a demo state, and keep improving the early game loop until its very solid
  • Dog AI needs to be improved and hopefully can get a feeding mechanic in
  • Start working on a finished built shop (That won't be the final level of course)
  • Foil Art Achievement cards
  • Do a art pass on the starting region
  • Get level 2 display tables to sell fish on
  • More fish, always more fish

This is a fishing shopkeeper where you start off in a pile of rubble in this mysterious world, in the hopes of rebuilding and making a large successful shop.  As you build, a town begins to build/grow alongside your shop.

The game is still very early into alpha development - I plan on posting updates on this page, Instagram and Youtube.  A lot of the work you see is still very early and jank; I'm trying to focus on building the core mechanics first, then polishing once I've confirmed it's fun!

I'm a single developer making this while working full time, so this comes out of pure enjoyment of simulator and tycoon games.  I also will emphasize that I'm going to be slow with progress at times because I need to manage my full time job and life as well.

Rare & Giga Catches

  • In rare scenarios you'll get rare giga sized catches, as well as Holographic/Foils that are worth a lot of money (I'm a big fan of trading card games, so snuck in foils!); However they could also be really handy to make your store more attractive for customers, as display pieces.

Bait

  • Risk Vs Reward: Bait will cost a upfront amount, but gives you a chance at catching better fish!  Some bait will be for specific fish in regions, while other bait just overall increases your chances.

Explore

  • Explore a mysterious world as you unlock new biomes and regions, you'll find new spots to fish and find new types that could be more expensive!  I have a lot of ideas planned for future biomes in this strange post-apocalyptic world.  You can also find Old World props you wouldn't find at any shop.

Customers

  • You'll need to make your shop appealing to the world's wanderers. I plan in the future for your shop's attractiveness to increase the chance of higher tier customers, who will have more buying power and expensive taste.

Town Building

  • As you repair and upgrade your shop, others will begin settling into the area as well and begin building, I hope this will make it visually rewarding and exciting to see the area change over time!  You will unlock possible NPC's to interact with in the future here.

Rebuilding & Upgrading

  • You'll need to make your shop appealing to the world's wanderers. I plan in the future for your shop's attractiveness to increase the chance of higher tier customers, who will have more buying power and expensive taste. You'll get more floor space, new tech, and furniture to show off your wares.

Building

  • Place your decorations, furniture, and displays the way you want to!

Decorating

  • I want to actually reward players for decorating, instead of it just being purely for looks.  The higher your shop's 'Cozy' bonus will be, the likelier you'll attract more and wealthier customers.

Dog

  • Keep your dog fed and happy!  I want to make the dog mechanic more interesting in the future (Including maybe choosing a different starter pet).  It will be a fun little companion on your journey across this odd world.

Achievements

  • I'd love to have a way for you to keep track of all the fish you've discovered, how many you've caught and the biggest weight you've caught!  The achievement system I showed in the trailer will definitely look better in the future, I have some fun ideas for it.

Filth

  • As you let customers into the store, it will degrade over time!  Customers will get grossed out and leave if you don't take care of your store.  I plan to add ways to automate cleaning of your shop in the future.
