Hotfixes and some pleasant adjustments

Critically annoying bug fixed:


The primary objective of this update was to correct a bug, which prevented some boons like the Farstrider Boots from activating.

A minor annoyance was squished too:


The game failed to remember the correct display on multi-monitor setups.

Earthquake & Crystal Obelisks


Earthquake is a new game event in v0.3, and I realized that it'd be neat if the tremors actually harmed Hazard-type encounters (i.e. Obstacles and Foes), in addition to shifting everything around a bit. Crystal Obelisks have also been added in v0.3 as a new type of Obstacles that subtly hint at the lore of the fantasy world of Dragon Riddler, but it seemed logical to me that these crystal structures should be more vulnerable to Earthquakes. Now they are.

Severe Wounds & Fierce Determination


Severe Wounds is a status effect, which was present since the first public release. When the dragon riddler or a dragon has lost 60% of their Life, the wounds have caused the loss of 1 Word Builder capacity, making it so much harder to build words. Some players rightly pointed out that falling into an unrecoverable downward spiral is never fun, but I liked the concept of a critical health condition being reflected in the game system. Then I realized that it's a very common trope in heroic stories that the wounded character gathers their strength (perhaps for the last time), and defends and attacks even more fiercely, having nothing to lose anymore. This brings us to a new status effect: Fierce Determination. The Severe Wounds is now only applied to hatchling dragons. They are not yet masters of their existence, and their willpower over their bodies is not yet able to take control over. Young dragons no longer have this weakness, but they are not yet experienced enough to find strength in a hopeless situation. Your character, the dragon riddler, and also adult dragons (and older ones) are different. They are the primary characters in these adventures, and thus, when they only have 30% of their Life left, a hidden reserve of power activates in them, which results in +1 Word Builder capacity. Use this power wisely, if you must, and be prepared: adult dragons will not surrender their life and treasures easily. Version 0.3 Released!

Better dragons, a new Joker system, more turn events & encounters and boons.

NEW FEATURE: DRAGON COLORS & BETTER TACTICS


As a purely aesthetic and very apparent change, dragons now have colors. But the real improvement here is that they are now much more tactical, and when in a desperate situation, will intentionally focus on defending themselves until they can retaliate. And they will retaliate, as these are evil beasts!

NEW FEATURE: REGULAR & MERCY JOKERS


It was already possible by spending Providence to use Joker letters that could stand in for any letter. In this update, an additional Joker system is introduced, so say hello to Regular Jokers, and keep using the Providence-controlled ones as Mercy Jokers. Regular Joker letters are only available during Journeys. They simply cost Energy, but never contribute to word rewards, so use them only to make building a word possible.

  • A warning is shown in Journey when the selected letters are likely to trigger a dangerous encounter.
  • Dragon Sword is highlighted on the Character Sheet in duels to explain the role of those mysterious, blue circles on certain letters.
  • Reach no longer may decrease below 2 due to harmful turn events.
  • Encounters now spawn near the edge of your Reach, rather than closer.
  • Challenge level adjustments (e.g. encounter characteristics, boon prices).
  • A bunch of minor visual and usability upgrades.
  • Bug fixes.

Announcing the release of a new major feature and several changes:

NEW FEATURE: TURN EVENTS


Both Journey and Duel have their own, unique turn events, which mostly, but not always, present extra challenges for the player. The next turn event is shown near the top left corner of the screen. Hover that area to learn more and to see what further turn events you should expect.

In this turn-based word puzzle adventure, you are a Dragon Riddler: an adventurer who desires fabled dragon gold.

Journey through a fantasy land in a world where words hold power. Obstacles and foes make your progress dangerous, but loot and mysteries await as you search for the dragon's lair. Then, enter and defeat the fearsome beast in a deadly word duel. Once victorious, take the gold, then make a decision: retire in fame and splendor, or push your luck and seek out a more challenging dragon for its treasures.

The land is represented by a grid of letters, but some are blocked by encounters: obstacles, foes, loot, mysteries, and the dragon's lair itself. Build words using the unoccupied letters to gain Control and Reach points, then use these to interact with encounters.

  • Obstacles are passive, immobile roadblocks that can be used for tactical advantage, but beware, unknown dangers might lurk beneath them.

  • Foes are monsters and enemies whose actions are determined by the letters they are standing on.

  • You already know what Loot is: more gold for your coffers.

  • Mysteries are almost always good for you, but some might present danger.

  • The dragon's lair starts hidden somewhere on the far side of the land, and you must bring it to the first column to enter by using up the letters between it and you.

When you face the dragon, a deadly word duel begins. Using letters from the Shared Letter Pool, each turn, the dragon builds a word first, but you only see its length. Build your own word to counter-attack, then observe how the letters clash in pairs as the turn resolves. Opposed letters represent both attack and defense, while unopposed ones directly damage the Life of the opponent! You can spend Energy to build words longer than your current natural ability allows. Some Energy is regained each turn, but know that Energy is also used for defense.

  • Dragons get smarter, stronger, and more vile with advanced age categories.

  • Dragons belong to various breeds, each having their own weaknesses, strengths, and abilities.

  • You get XP for your words, with which you can purchase extra boons to upgrade your adventurer.

If you defeat your opponent, its gold is immediately yours. Then, if you dare, you may venture on, seeking a more challenging dragon – after receiving boons to make your adventurer even more powerful and resourceful.

Are you timid and stop too soon? Are you wise enough to know when not to push your luck? Can you resist the temptation of dragon gold?
