Other terms

May 1st May 4th

Battle of the Coral Sea
From May 4th through 8th of 1942, Japan and the Allies fought in the Coral Sea, although indirectly: vessels of both sides never fired at or even saw each other, relying instead on aircraft. Strategic victory went to the Allies: they managed to halt Japan's advance and hurt its air carrier fleet that led to a decisive victory at Midway
May 4th May 7th

Battle of Madagascar
To prevent a Japanese naval base from possibly being built on Madagascar that at the time belonged to Vichy France, Britain decided to conquer the island. On May 5th, 1942 Commonwealth troops landed on the northern point of Madagascar and half a year later established full control over it. It was the first large-scale operation of World War II where ground, naval, and air forces of the Allies participated in tandem.
May 7th May 10th

The end of World War II in Europe
This was the biggest ordeal that the Allies had faced, and its finally over. Six long years of war, dozens of strategic operations on thousands of miles of the frontlines, and countless acts of heroism of regular soldiers and at last, victory! Nazi Germany capitulated, the war ended, and heroes can finally go home to their families.
May 10th May 13th

Operation Diadem
The fourth and final battle at Monte Cassino began on May 11th, 1944. After three failed offensives the Allies spent two months preparing for an attack that would be a surprise for the Wehrmacht and succeeded. The Gustav Line in Central Italy was breached, and the German forces retreated to the Hitler Line.
May 13th May 17th

The end of the Tunisian campaign
During the final months of the North African campaign the Axis powers kept retreating, suffering from lack of fuel and reinforcements. In Tunisia they fell back to well fortified defensive positions, but their defeat was only a matter of time. That time came on May 13th, 1943, when over 200 thousand troops from Germany and Italy surrendered to the Allies.
May 18th May 22nd

Battle of Crete
From May 20th through 31st of 1941 Germany executed an operation to capture Crete. It was the first large-scale airborne invasion in history: over 20 thousand German paratroopers were involved in the operation. As a result the British army lost almost all of its forces stationed on Crete, but Germany suffered heavy losses as well and never authorized large-scale airborne operations again.
May 23rd May 26th

Senger Line
After the defeat at the Gustav Line the Wehrmacht retreated to the Hitler Line, which didn't last long either and fell to the assault of Polish and Canadian forces. To make its fall seem less significant, Hitler had renamed it to the Senger Line beforehand. After the victory the Allies instead of routing the retreating German forces decided to march on Rome which was taken without a battle on June 4th.
May 27th May 30th

F-4 Phantom first flight
On May 27th, 1958, a McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II fighter took its maiden flight. Thanks to its high adaptability it became the most produced American supersonic military aircraft and the most iconic aircraft of the US Air Force during the Cold War. It was widely used by the US during the Vietnam War, by Israel in many conflicts, and is still employed by several countries. |
