The Luftwaffe had hoped to destroy RAF fighters in four days and then bomb all military bases and factories of Britains military within a month, but thanks to fierce British resistance, the battle dragged on for several months. On September 15th 1940, Germany made a final attempt to gain air superiority, sending more than a thousand aircraft into battle, but the RAF repulsed this attack too. Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few Winston Churchill declared during the battle, collectively making all RAF pilots known as The Few.

- The LF abbreviation in the Spitfire LF Mk.IXcs name stands for low altitude-fighter. This Spitfire has an impressive rate of climb and record-breaking maneuverability for its rank. This wonderful fighter was flown by Yannis Agorastos Plagis, a Royal Air Force ace who became famous in the defense of Malta in 1942.
- The FR abbreviation in the Spitfire FR Mk.XIVes name stands for fighter-reconnaissance. This modification retained all the advantages of the Spitfire family, but received a more powerful Griffon engine and the ability to carry a 500 lb bomb.
