Dear oil entrepreneurs, Turmoil's new DLC Deeper Underground is now available! So, without further ado, we welcome you to get back into the business of drilling for oil, and all the other things we have cooked up for you!
- An all-new town with new buildings, a new mayor, and balloon trips to special deep-drilling grounds!
- Besides oil, you can now also find water underground - which comes in handy when you want to drill faster and cheaper! But it's also essential for the production of the highly valuable petrol!
- Petrol marks the start of a new era. You cant just dig it up and sell it right away, you first have to produce it in refineries. Its a challenging but rewarding undertaking, and we trust there will be no complaints about the revenues it generates!
- A brand new expedition: Every few in-game years, regular drilling levels are alternated with special research missions. Here, it's all about trying to drill as deep as possible with limited resources. Can you drill deeper than your opponents?
- Two new playable characters to choose from: meet Thorpe and Mabel! Both willing and able!
- To get your drilling operation up and running as quickly as possible, meet Yvonne, Sanjay, and Dynamite Dale who will introduce you to their new wares! And of course your old friends Edward, Raynor, Fred, and William will stop by with their train to provide you with all the drilling equipment you need.
- Philip is also back, and he's got a new game for you: Dice Dice Dice. If you can outsmart him, you're sure to make a few extra bucks on the side.
- Just like previous campaigns, it's all about who has the most town shares in the end. Deeper Underground uses the same bidding system as in the multiplayer campaign, but shares can also be earned in the deep-drilling missions.
- And last but not least: we've added an explosive item to the game, dynamite! While hard rock can be nice when it comes out of speakers, it's a big problem when you stumble upon it underground. Normal drills are not strong enough, so make sure to visit Dynamite Dale in the Saloon!

Dear oil entrepreneurs, Thank you for all the great feedback and support! We noticed that not every player had the time to complete a full multiplayer campaign. Because of this we are happy to add a single game mode to the multiplayer:
- Play a single level with random players
- Customize a single level to play with friends
- Single player tab added to the achievements overview
- Added pop-up to the start of single levels and weekly challenge with info about the level.
- Added help feature to the multiplayer menu.
- Changed wording in pause menu when watching a replay (it now says exit replay instead of stop level)
- Fixed issue with returning from watching a replay from the challenge highscore where it would always open the current challenge instead of the one you were looking at before
- Fixed issue with friends tab in weekly highscore menu where it would show scores for other challenges

Dear oil entrepreneurs, Thank you for all the feedback! We will bring you a update today to fix some small issues in multiplayer mode:
- After leaving a multiplayer match where all other players left before the end, you will no longer get a pop-up with a warning about abandoning games prematurely (this will also not count as a game leave).
- Added the option to delete custom games that are still waiting to start.
- Fixed a bug where the game gets stuck when someone reaches exactly 50% of the shares.

Dear oil entrepreneurs, Thank you for all the feedback on the multiplayer update! We will bring you a small update today to fix some issues with multiplayer matches that get stuck early in the game. Unresponsive players get removed from the match in the first turn When a player now leaves a match in the first turn without playing the level, they are no longer part of that running game to make room for another player. This way we want to reward participation and hopefully prevent more games from getting stuck. Next to the issue above we fixed some problems with missing text in the localization of multiplayer.

Dear oil entrepreneurs, We are happy to announce that with this update, Turmoil Multiplayer is finally here! We dig it (ha!), and hope you will too! Many thanks to all the players who helped us by playtesting, filling in questionnaires and reporting bugs! Now we suspect you may want to know whats in store in Turmoil Multiplayer, so heres a short roundup of whats what:
- Turmoil Multiplayer is like playing a campaign with human opponents instead of NPC's, on a new and smaller map, but with the same area and technology progression as in the main game.
- Join a random campaign and stack up your skills against players across the globe, or create a custom campaign with up to 3 of your friends to battle out who will become the next oil baron(ess)!
- Adjust the conditions of any custom campaign with your friend(s) via custom game options: add AI players and tweak their difficulty level, adjust the turn time for each round, and specify your starting funds. The world is your oil-ster!
- Move to the Multiplayer town close to the sea, bid on the plots youd like to own, take turns drilling for oil, join in the blind stock auction and cleverly outbid your opponents, and win the Mayors best-looking locomotive!
- Watch a recap after every round of digging and bidding to keep track of who is winning, and what strategy everyone used in the previous round, so you can outsmart them next time!
- Choose your own username and take your pick from multiple different characters and portrait frames!
- Part 1: An introduction (https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/361280/view/3126057181558273704)
- Part 2: A match in action (https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/361280/view/3126057181561744165)
- Part 3: Game history and end-of-game (https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/361280/view/3126061077814000240)

- Part 5: Q&A (https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/361280/view/3110300924907588677)
Besides the new and shiny Multiplayer mode, we of course also still love the single player campaign. Here are the things we improved with regards to the classic game and DLC: Accessibility features:
- Option to enable larger text on dynamic elements in level.
- Option to disable mousewheel wagon assignment to companies.
- Option to replace fonts with dyslexia-friendly variants (Supported languages; English, Brazilian Portuguese, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Hungarian, Polish).
- You are now able to use the Enter button to buy upgrades in stores when a tutorial for the upgrade is being shown (even though the standard buy button is disabled).
- The close toggle for planned elbows is now disabled when the pipe you are building is canceled (by hitting a rock).
- Wagons no longer ignore the oil in your silos after you connect two fully upgraded pipes to a rig.
- Missing saloon offers for spillage discount and interest have been added to The Heat is On and expert campaign of the main game and DLC.

Dear oil entrepreneurs, It's finally upon us: Turmoil Multiplayer has reached the playtesting phase! If all goes well, you'll all be able to play Turmoil campaigns online with friends and adversaries in the near future. But of course we want to make sure everything is in good order before we release this goodness onto our beloved players. And we could use your help with this! Once the playtest build is live, a button will appear on the store page, which you can use to sign up as a tester for Turmoil Multiplayer. There will be a limited number of volunteer playtester spots available, and if you sign up via the button, you will receive an invite. If you decide to join the playtest, start playing and share your feedback via our questionnaire! The major things we want to test are:
- Setting up a new game
- Customising your character and frame
- Playing the Multiplayer campaign (of course)
- Multiplayer Land Auction
- Multiplayer Stock Auction
- Recaps showing the outcome of the previous round and auctions
- Watching replays from your adversaries' turns
- The time it takes to complete a turn
- And hopefully any final issues you may run into :)

Welcome to the final pre-release development blog of the multiplayer update. Were really thankful for the positive interest so far. In todays post, we are going to answer some questions that appeared in the comments on previous blog posts. After that, all thats left is actually releasing the gamemode!
- Multiplayer part 1: an introduction A look at what the multiplayer campaign is and what a turn of playing looks like.
- Multiplayer part 2: a match in action A first look at the info you get to see about your opponents.
- Multiplayer part 3: game history and end-of-game A look at in-game player statistics and the History page.
- Multiplayer part 4: customization and matchmaking Cosmetic player customization and details about how you actually join a match.
- Multiplayer part 5: questions & answers You are here An overview of all the questions so far and our answers.
When is it expected to come out?
Were planning on doing a Steam Playtest in Q1 of 2022. The release date is not known yet, it depends on how much has to be improved after the playtest. The playtest will be announced on the Steam blog.
Will the game support local multiplayer?
There are no plans for supporting local multiplayer or Steam Remote Play Together.
Will there be options for friends-only 2-3 player games with AI bots filling the other slots?
You can create private matches with friends. A solution to fill the other slots with bots or for playing with less players is in the works.
Can we get more than 4 players in a match?
The campaign is currently made for a maximum of 4 players.
Will there be more maps to play? / Will there be a full campaign mode to play with friends?
Its possible we will release a map selection option for private games, including the full unabridged campaign and The Heat Is On. But dont expect it for the initial release. We also have a few concepts for new types of multiplayer maps already.
Can we get minigames in the town screen for when were waiting?
You can play a single game from the menu while waiting, or close the game and Steam will send a notification when your game is ready again.
Wont the expert characters be unbalanced in multiplayer?
Character selection in multiplayer is purely visual, you dont get any special abilities.
Does the stock auction require all players to be present? If so, what if someone leaves? Will the game not be able to progress until all players are present?
Everyone bids on stocks and land in their own time. The game progresses as soon as the last player makes their bid. You get a recap of the auctions when you open the game again. More about this in the part 2 blog post: https://steamcommunity.com/games/361280/announcements/detail/3126057181561744166
Will the game support cross platform multiplayer with GoG?
All the desktop versions of the game are planned to connect with the same servers. As soon as we have a solution for managing player accounts in GoG and other platforms they can play with everyone else.
Is there a Discord server for the game?
Theres a Gamious Discord community. You are all very much welcome to join it here: https://discord.com/invite/ZQcQ7bQYTW Hopefully this answers all your most pressing questions. Thanks for reading!

Hello and welcome to the last multiplayer blog post. The topics of the day are player portrait customization and matchmaking!
- Multiplayer part 4: customization and matchmaking You are here Cosmetic player customization and details about how you actually join a match.
- Multiplayer part 5: questions & answers An overview of community questions that were answered previously. Make sure to put your questions in the comments!
Player customization
In order to distinguish the players in a multiplayer game, we needed to make sure that you dont look the same. We firstsimply assigned a random character to each player (Blanche, Joshua, Daisy or Ricardo). But this was pretty boring, and you would be playing as a different character in each match. Instead of this, you can now pick your own portrait, and we added a bunch of unique portrait borders as well.
Henry busting out of prison very politely with hat in hand is my favorite portrait so far. You might notice the character customization menu is located in a completely new multiplayer menu. I hope you like it, because youll be seeing a lot more of it! At the moment there are 12 characters and 11 portrait borders to choose from. The characters include all the classic, expert and Heat Is On playable characters and 3 completely new characters. Well certainly aim to add more in the future! All the portraits are available from the start without any additional unlock conditions (or payment, no loot boxes to be seen here). We initially played with the idea of unlocking certain portrait borders by completing multiplayer matches or getting other achievements. In the end we decided against this. We might reconsider unlock conditions for portraits added in the future. There is a certain prestige to using a cosmetic that no one else has access to, but we dont want to turn picking your portrait into a negative experience either. Let us know how you feel about this in the comments.
Matchmaking: joining a multiplayer match
Lets talk a bit about matchmaking. How do you actually play a match and who will be your opponents?
Starting a new match is as easy as pressing the Play now! button. You will join a match instantly. In the current system you can join a random online match, or play with a selected group. After pressing the Play now! button, you dont have to wait in queue or anything like that. You join a match, get land from the mayor, and play your first level and auctions. Even if all the player slots arent filled yet. Of course you cant progress further than one level until all the player slots are filled and other people have played their first level as well. Just close the game and you will get a Steam notification when its your turn again. This might take a few minutes, or a day. So dont plan your day around playing online Turmoil unless youre playing with friends.
Joining multiple matches
Playing just one match of Turmoil at a time might be fun, but what if every turn is taking 1-2 days and that just doesnt scratch your oil drilling itch enough? The solution is simple, you can join multiple matches and play them all at the same time.
The lobby is the first screen of the multiplayer menu and shows you an overview of all the matches that you participate in, in order of importance. When playing multiple matches, dont forget to check which upgrades you purchased and what your opponents are up to. You can always refresh your memory by taking a look at the history.
Skipping a turn
While its not a large obligation, sometimes life gets the better of you and you simply dont have the time to attend to your multiplayer match in time. There two things you have to keep in mind when skipping a turn: 1: If you take longer than 2 days to take your turn, you automatically get $0 profit, a random plot for $2000, and will bid only $1 at the stock auction. This allows the game to continue and prevents endless stalling. There is no punishment for stalling and skipping a turn. However 2: After not playing for 3 turns in a row, you will get kicked from the match and it continues without you. This counts towards your player statistics as if you conceded the game. This brings us to the topic of conceding (leaving a match).
Conceding the game and repeated concede punishment
When deciding to join a multiplayer match in any long-form game, you are expected to play until the end. Conceding in a Turmoil match is always an option, and will not be punished when used sparingly. However, abuse of the concede game option will be noted. After conceding too many matches compared to finishing them, you will be put in a separate queue with other players who share the same fate. This is to prevent the main pool of players from deteriorating into meta-strategies where you leave as soon as you feel like you cant get first place anymore. Its also required in order to keep griefers/trolls from polluting the pool. Playing the game is not just about winning. When youre at the bottom, adopt a different playstyle and try to aim for third or second place. Aside from doing that, you can still influence the game by saving up money and pressuring your opponents into bidding more on the stock auction. In short: Dont be a sour-puss! Keep some perspective and dont turn the game into a grind of trying to get a 50% win rate or some other arbitrary statistic. You cant win 'em all!.
Playing with friends
For those who dont want to deal with the shenanigans of playing with random people online, there is also a Custom game option where you can invite your friends.
Creating a custom game. You can invite players by name or use your in-game friends list. You can only start a custom game when you have a full group of 4 players. Were still considering how to handle less than 4 players.
Closing words
As always, let us know if you have any suggestions, well be posting our answers in the Q&A post next week. And if youre not sure how you feel about any of this, you can sign up for the Steam playtest once it goes live and give feedback based on your actual game experience.

Hello all and welcome to part 3 of the multiplayer development log. We will be showcasing the match statistics available during a multiplayer campaign. Todays screenshots are all from a real multiplayer match, played internally.
- Multiplayer part 1: an introduction A look at what the multiplayer campaign is and what a turn of playing looks like.
- Multiplayer part 2: a match in action A first look at the info you get to see about your opponents.
- Multiplayer part 3: game history and end-of-game You are here A look at in-game player statistics and the History page.
- Multiplayer part 4: customization and matchmaking
- Multiplayer part 5: questions & answers An overview of community questions that were answered previously. Make sure to put your questions in the comments!
The history page
Introducing the history page. The match history will be accessible from the townhall, showcasing the statistics of the match so far. The four history categories are Profits, Stocks, Land and Upgrades.
First off, the Profits history gives a nice overview of how much money has been earned by everyone each round. Not doing too great on stocks so far? Theres no shame in gloating about that one round where you beat everyone out on profits either way. If youre the strategical type, you can glean information about your opponents off this page by cross-referencing it with the other pages.
Next up is the Stocks history page. The line chart represents the number of stocks owned by each player, and the money stacks the offer made to win the auction. This screenshot taken from one of our internal test matches showcases a dangerous and bothersome phenomenon. Inflation! Since human players earn more money than the rivals in the average single player campaign, the stock prices skyrocket rather quickly. Beware of this, and dont be afraid to shell out some extra cash to win an early auction. It might save you later on! Be wary though, in doing so you will yourself become an accessory to inflation.
The Land Auction history. It shows you how juicy the oil plots that everyone digged have been. And of course what they were willing to pay for it. Dont make the mistake of directly correlating the oil supply values and auction bids though! The players didnt know the exact oil values when making their bid. The bids are quite useful for determining how high players are willing to go though. As you can see, in our test match no-one was willing to bid that high for land. But being picky can make a big difference in the amount of oil you get! The potential profit difference between a plot of land with 45,000 or 55,000 barrels of oil is much more than $2,000. So dont be afraid to follow the inflation when bidding on land. Getting the best plot counts double. More oil for you, less for them. You can have your milkshake, and drink it up too!
Finally, the upgrades history allows you to see what upgrades have been bought in each year by a player. Its not necessarily useful to the match at hand, but you can at least use it to copy someone elses starting upgrades for your next match if you're not happy with how your initial level plays out. As usual, you can still view the total upgrades purchased by clicking the scroll in the town.
The end of the game
After the final auction concludes and the winner is declared, you get to relax for a moment. Sit back and watch the end-of-game cinematic, where your stats scroll by one final time and your achievements get celebrated.
With the dust settled, your match stats get added to your profile. Dont mope if you didnt win. After all, what counts is that you had a good time. Thanks for reading! Remember that there are 5 blog posts planned in total. The last one will be a Q&A where we answer as many questions as possible, so make sure to ask away in the comments. The multiplayer Steam playtest is still planned to be held in Q1 of 2022. Until the next one!

Hello and welcome to part 2 of the series where we reveal the contents of the soon-to-be released multiplayer gamemode.
- Multiplayer part 1: an introduction A look at what the multiplayer campaign is and what a turn of playing looks like.
- Multiplayer part 2: a match in action You are here
- Multiplayer part 3: game history and end-of-game
- Multiplayer part 4: customization and matchmaking

Keeping tabs on the competition
Last time you saw what it will be like to play a round of the multiplayer campaign. While playing your own levels is fine and dandy, you also need to know what your opponents are up to. How else are you going to decide how much to bid on the auctions? Enter the round recap, which happens once each turn. The round recap contains three phases, showing you how much money they earned in their previous level, the distribution of land, and the winner of the stock auction.
The level recap
Example of a level recap - well done t4! The first thing you get to see is the level recap. It reveals important information about your opponents, like the amount of money they earned and which upgrades they purchased. You can also view a replay of their level if youre curious. Watching three replays every round is a bit much, so there are stamps to help highlight all kinds of interesting events that might transpire in a level. Note that this is a real screenshot of an internal version of the game. We could record a GIF showing the animations but we dont want to spoil everything!
The land auction recap
Example of a land auction recap after it has ended Continuing to the next phase we arrive at the land auction recap. Just like in single-player mode, the player with the lowest money balance at the start of the round gets to make the first bid. The players will keep bidding automatically according to their previously assigned priorities, until everyone has a plot of land. A notable observation here is that the first area has only one plot of land for each player. These first area plots are free of charge and will always contain the same amount of oil in a given game. Similar to single-player, the amount of oil per plot is based on the plots close to it. A juicy plot indicates that anything close will likely also be good, even if the plots are separated by an area border! These two recaps are both for the same in-game turn, but they have a different year indicated at the top. What gives? Each turn, you play a level on the plot that you bought in the previous turn. This means that the level recap is for the previous year, and youre viewing the land auction for the plot of land that you get to play in the current year. Dont worry if this confuses you, its not that important to understand the exact chronology when playing.
The stock auction recap
An animation of the stock auction recap Now for the final phase, the stock auction. Theres not much to say here! This recap reveals everyones offer, like someone offering $50,000 too much for what could have been a cheap share. The winner takes all, and all other players get a refund. In multiplayer, the stock auctions start right away after having played the first level. You might only have enough money for either upgrades or stocks, so choose wisely. After getting up to speed with the competition, the game is on. Everyone gets to dig into their new plot of land, and the bidding starts anew. Dont forget to buy upgrades!

Hello everyone, this is Herman A.K.A. 1000 Gibibit, lead programmer on Turmoil. We've announced multiplayer for Turmoil a while ago, and now that we're close to finishing, we'd love to tell you a bit more about it. So, welcome to a new series discussing the contents of the upcoming multiplayer update. In the coming weeks we will be going over several facets of multiplayer explaining the gameplay and design choices of the new game mode. This is a more lengthy format than your regular patch notes post, so feel free to skim the post if youre not into that. First off, a roadmap of the posts that are coming up:
- Multiplayer part 1: an introduction You are here A look at what the multiplayer campaign is and what a turn of playing looks like.
- Multiplayer part 2: a match in action
- Multiplayer part 3: game history and end-of-game
- Multiplayer part 4: customization and matchmaking
- Multiplayer part 5: questions & answers An overview of community questions that were answered previously. Make sure to put your questions in the comments!
The conceiving of multiplayer
Several players have requested multiplayer in the past, by asking about it on the forums. Some of those posts go back as far as 2015! The answer was always the same, we did not have the resources to start an ambitious project like this. So how did we end up where we are now? You may remember that multiplayer was first announced back in September 2018. And before that, we already started working on the remake of the game in May 2018. That remake is in fact the 3.0 version of the game that is live on Steam. Around this time we were in a better position to take risks, partly thanks to the publisher for the mobile version of Turmoil, Leiting Games, allowing us to get started on designing the new online gamemode. More news about Turmoil on mobile soon! In the initial brainstorms we came up with some crazy ideas, like a giant map where you would be able to drill on plots uncovered by the whole community, and invest as a group into rails to reach new areas. While this sounded really cool, we did not feel like this type of gameplay would be very well connected to the existing game. There were some other ideas as well, but in the end we compromised and simplified, two disappointing words for what is in fact a very exciting result!
The multiplayer campaign
The gamemode we settled on can be best summarized as follows: An online version of the 4-player campaign, shortened to 12 levels instead of the regular 40 The normal campaign, but multiplayer! Meaning each of the AIs is replaced with a real player. All the players have to compete for land and shares in auctions, and the land you buy will be drilled for oil as usual. Whoever gets more than half the shares first, wins! Because you are now playing against other people, the game is turn-based. Every turn you start by playing a level, and afterwards you bid on the land and stock auctions. This repeats for a maximum of twelve turns, until a winner is declared. You perform your turn in your own time, which means the other players might not be at their computer while you are offering on stocks, and vice versa.
The multiplayer town - the background is the same as in the classic campaign for now You can see some tid-bits here that are unique to the multiplayer campaign. The player status below the names (in this case a wagon) indicates what your opponents have to do to finish their turn. Of course, there is a brand new map to drill just for the occasion.
The new map - you start at the top left next to the train The multiplayer map contains 12 plots for every player, so a total of 48 plots. A free starting plot in the fertile lands, three plots in the rock-filled desert, four plots of gas-boosting action in the plains, and finally a nail biting finale in the harsh snow area. Because the map is much smaller than usual, all upgrades are reduced to about half-price. Your starting balance is still the usual $20,000. Now that you have to bid against other players, the land auction does not happen in real-time anymore. Each player sets up their offers, and only after everyone has made an offer on four pieces of land, ordered by priority, the auction takes place. Placing an offer looks a little like this.
Offering on land Instead of overbidding other players as the auction happens, you have to decide your maximum bid on each plot. When the actual auction begins, you will automatically make an offer on your top priority, starting at $2,000. Anyone else that has the same plot as top priority, will keep outbidding you until one of you has reached their maximum bid and continues with the second best plot. Like in the singleplayer campaign, the stock percentage determines who wins the game. Stock auctions start right away after playing your first level, so you cant just cruise along and buy every upgrade you want! Some strategy is involved, and were sure you will figure it out once the game is out there.
Offering on stocks Similar to the land auction, you have to make a blind offer. Contrary to the land auction, the amount you enter is always what you pay if you win, so you cant just bid your entire balance. Blind bidding may seem dull, but it was actually quite intense in our playtests. It introduces poker-like situations where you can sometimes get stocks for cheap, and other times force your opponents to bid unreasonably high just by having a lot of money in the bank. Note that you do not know the exact amount of money that your opponents have in the bank. This is only revealed after each turn has completed. More on this in the next blog post.
Turn-based versus real-time addendum
One issue wed like to address but which did not fit in anywhere else is the choice of a turn-based game versus a real-time game. Some of you might not have a problem with the online mode being turn-based. Lets be clear, you dont play completely in order. Everyone can play their level for that turn simultaneously, and offer on the stocks and land simultaneously as well. This makes it an asynchronous turn-based game. But why not full real-time? Just give everyone a limited timer of 15-20 minutes to take their turn and you can play the entire campaign in one sitting! This is simply not feasible. With the multiplayer campaign reduced to 12 levels, a full campaign takes about 3 hours to play. Turmoil is still a casual and relaxing game at heart, and having to play 3 hours in a row does not fit in with this vision. So we stuck with turn-based, which honestly is a perfect fit and just as exciting to play. Only with a bit of patience required.
To close
Wed like to leave you with a small teaser to go. The public Steam playtest for the multiplayer playtest is planned to be released Q1 of 2022. Just like the 3.0 playtest, that means you will be able to sign up for it on the Steam store page and have a random chance to be selected to play. Thats all for now folks. This post mostly explained how multiplayer worked from the current players perspective. Next time well explain how you get information about what your opponents are up to! PS: if you're reading this in your browser, you can view any of the screenshots above at a higher resolution by using right-click -> open in new tab.

Dear oil magnates, Today we bring a small update that prevents your campaign from getting stuck due to bugs. Of course we always try to solve bugs before they reach you, but when one manages to slip through it is better to have a fail-safe.
Corrupted levels workaround
The game will now delete your level progress if it detects an error while loading the existing level. This prevents your campaign from getting stuck on a corrupted level save, instead of reloading the corrupted save every time you try to continue the campaign. Your campaign save will stay intact when this happens and you can retry the level.

A small hotfix to yesterdays update to fix some minor bugs.
Changelog
- The campaign AI will now purchase upgrades in a logical order again, which may slightly impact difficulty. Shout-out to Stuff+ for pointing this out. Yes, the AI does need to purchase upgrades in order to improve their profits.
- Town upgrade scroll tooltip now appears on the correct position for resolutions other than 1920x1080
- You can now use the enter key to purchase upgrades in town when selected.

Dear oil entrepreneurs, Version 3.0.38 of Turmoil is now available. This patch brings some minor bugfixes and several changes to tune the game balance.
Game speed has been lowered by 10%
After the 3.0 update, we found the game was running 20% faster than the old version. This put a little bit too much pressure on decision making, so we decided to lower it by 10% again. This means the result is still a little more fast paced than before, but not as frantic.
Mole changes
The mole gas-seeking behaviour now uses the distance to the nearest corner of the gas well, instead of the distance to the center of the gas well when determining whether to reveal it. It improves the reliability of finding gas bubbles with moles, especially for larger bubbles.
Other changes
- Updated localization files.
- Reduced general memory usage.
- The Higher/Lower minigame now retains the same set of cards after reloading the campaign.
- Added particles to The Heat Is On stock auction.
Fixes
- The in-level silo tutorial now gives you the proper amount of money required to complete the tutorial. A rounding error caused you to have too little money in some scenarios, which meant you could not continue the tutorial.
- The single game menu now uses the entered seed when starting the level, fixing some edge cases where it would previously not use the seed.
- The post-campaign dialog in The Heat Is On now uses the correct localization after having played the bonus island.
- Resolved a UI issue related to attempting to build a pipe to the very edge of the screen in fullscreen mode.
- The Tip Top achievement is attainable again, now by reading all the tips in the Turmoil campaign instead of buying them.
- Fixed an issue where the "All Oil Sold" bonus was awarded even though not all oil was sold.
- Fixed an issue where the Magmificent achievement requirement applied to the oil well's radius, instead of the volume as was intended. This makes the achievement easier to obtain.
Next up: Multiplayer
Starting next week we will be posting a weekly write-up about how the upcoming multiplayer game mode works. We hope you are as excited as we are about this, stay tuned!

Patch notes for hotfix version 3.0.35e
- Fixed an issue where cloud save would not trigger after every campaign save, causing desynchronisation between your local and cloud save when switching between devices.

Hello all. Today we discovered an issue that prevented some players from logging in and thus from setting a nickname or submitting Weekly Challenge levels. This patch fixes the issue. If you find yourself being unable to set a nickname or submit a level, please check that you're running version 3.0.35d (seen in the bottom left of the main menu).

Hello! Today we bring to you some bugfixes and minor additions. Thanks to everyone in the community for reporting the bugs and for suggesting improvements.
- Fixed an issue where syncing with the cloud would cause you to lose access to the expert mode if you had not won the Heat Is On expansion campaign.
- You can no longer close valves while holding a wagon, silo, rig, dowser, scanner or mole.
- Added option to only toggle valves by holding Control, then clicking. It can be found in Settings->Game. The option is turned off by default.
- Starting a Challenge level right before the deadline and submitting it after the deadline no longer submits the level for the new Challenge. This caused players to be locked out from the new Challenge since they had now submitted a level for the new Challenge.
- Winning the campaign before the final year now awards the expert mode. Previously the expert mode would only be unlocked when playing to the end of the campaign. This applies to both classic Turmoil campaign and The Heat Is On.
- Improve text alignment for building names and player names. Mostly noticable in languages that use a non-default font. Thanks to Bokor for noticing this in the Hungarian version of the game.
- Fixed an in-level integer overflow issue related to rig spillage that would cause submitted replays to be invalidated.
- Fixed an issue where combining silos into a supersilo would play both the upgrade and the Cannot afford audio effect.
- The level seed is now shown in the post-level statistics screen when playing a Single Game.
- Having a bad connection to the game server no longer causes the game to take longer to start.
- Play building placement error sound when trying to build a building over another.
- Fixed issue where the floating heads above town buildings would not appear if you had exactly 50% stocks.
- When holding a scanner: the scanner price preview is now layered in front of the grass.

Howdy oil entrepreneurs, Today we present to you, Turmoil version 3.0. Turmoil is rebuilt completely from the ground up in order to facilitate all the new stuff coming your way. You already know about some of the new features if you've read the Playtest blog post, but we will go over them again here. First, a public service announcement: This version is incompatible with saved games. Please read the paragraph "Your Campaign in progress" for instructions on how to continue your old campaign. Lets continue with the highlights of the update.
New features
In-game Weekly Challenge leaderboard
You can now view the full Weekly Challenge leaderboard in the game instead of on the Steam Community. This includes a history of past challenges. The history includes any Weeklies played in the new version.
You can click a player's name in the leaderboard to view their past achievements. This player profile will get extended later on when more online features are added.
Those with a keen eye will notice the camera icons next to each score. That leads us to the next highlight...
Replays
You can now watch replays of all Weekly Challenge submissions. Learn some new strategies from those pesky top 5 players and claim your own spot in the leaderboard! Or go back a few weeks and laugh at your friends missing that one oil well by a few pixels. Replays will be available for all Weekly Challenges played from this week onward.
You can watch a replay by pressing the camera icon next to the score in the leaderboard.
Weekly Challenge Anti-cheat
Up till today, there was not really a way to prevent players from submitting invalid Challenge scores. This has changed! Scores will be automatically validated using their replays and removed if they fail the check. And no, the game will not ship with any anti-cheat software. Your Challenge submissions are checked 100% on the game server.
Save, Quit and Continue
One of the side-effects of adding replays to the game is that we can save your progress as a partial replay. This means you can now exit a level in progress and continue where you left off. It works for both campaign levels and single game levels! Simply close the game, go have that dinner, and come back to your level like you were never gone.
Ultrawide resolutions
Wider aspect radios are now supported up to 21:9. [expand]
[/expand]
Updated HUD
As you can see in the screenshots above, the in-game interface has been overhauled with an updated color scheme.
Campaign upgrade tutorial videos
There have always been a few upgrades that were confusing to use or difficult to explain in the short description shown in the town stores. Once again, we used the replay system to show a short video next to most of the upgrades, right in the town store. Some of the Mayor's Tips are also animated now. There were animated tutorials in the game already, but they were few and far between with a jarring 5 FPS.
New calendar menu
There is now a separate calendar menu where you can easily view the remaining duration of the level. You can access it by pressing the calendar. The loan menu can still be found by pressing the money counter at the top of the screen.
Localization
You can find 4 new languages in the settings menu:
- Hungarian
- Japanese
- Korean
- Turkish
Town status indicators
As a final touch, the Town now shows pawns floating in the air whenever there is a new upgrade available or when you still have to do a land or stock auction. New upgrades are also indicated in the store with a little orange exclamation mark so you can't miss them!
[expand]
[/expand]
MacOS and Linux
Of course we're showing some love for all operating systems out there.
- 64 bit MacOS is now supported
- Mouse wheel input on Linux has been fixed (for instance when assigning wagons)
Your Campaign in progress
The 3.0 version is not backwards compatible with old campaign saves. Not to worry though, you can still access the old version of Turmoil through the Steam game properties panel. Simply right-click the game in Steam, go to BETAS, and select "old_campaign_compatible". Don't forget to disable the beta after finishing your campaign! You won't get any of the shiny new features until you disable the beta again. If you don't mind starting a new campaign you can simply keep playing the latest update. Your overall progress is automatically transferred to the new version. This means that you will still have the expert modes and the areas in the "Single Game" gamemode unlocked.
Modding
The old method of modding the player portraits and dialog is no longer supported. You can switch to the "old_campaign_compatible" beta if you want to keep playing with your mods. That's all for now, thanks for sticking with us! Enjoy, and make sure to press Follow on the Community Hub or Steam store page if you want to stay up to date with the latest releases. We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments as well. Got feedback on the game, questions, or just want to hang out? Join us on Discord or the Steam Community forums!

Dear oil entrepreneurs, It's been quiet here for a long time, and that's about to change! We've been working hard on a complete rebuild of the game, as well as a version for mobile. And, as promised: a multiplayer campaign! But before we can roll out all of this good stuff, we need to gradually test if everything is in working order. We could use your help with this! You can find a button on the store page to sign up for a playtest of the new Turmoil. We will soon start this playtest with a limited number of volunteers. New things we want to test are:
- Replays of the Weekly Challenge
- In-game Weekly Challenge leaderboard and history
- Tutorial 'videos'
- New and improved in-game UI
- New languages (Turkish, Korean, Hungarian)
- New aspect ratios (no more black bars in 16:9 full screen mode)
- Loading screen tips
- And hopefully the absence of lots of imperfections from the old version!

This is a patch for a minor UI issue that allowed players to start campaigns as the wrong character, corrupting the campaign and crashing the game at the first stock auction. This patch includes the following changes
- Fixed an issue where the game would remember the character you selected when in the DLC character select, then allowing you to start the game as a DLC character in the regular campaign.
- Fixed an issue where the stock auction would crash when trying to load a non-existant image.

Dear oil entrepreneurs old and new,
It's been a while since the last update, but this doesn't mean we that we've stopped working on the game! On the contrary, the success of Turmoil has has only enabled and inspired us to do much more. There are currently several big Turmoil things in the pipeline:
Multiplayer
Lots of you have asked for it, and we've always really wanted it ourselves too. To start with, we are aiming for campaigns to be playable against human opponents. These will probably be a shorter version of the original campaigns, with several changes to features like the Stock and Land Auction so that you can play against your friends and others in a turn-based fashion.
New Challenge Modes
The working title that we're using here is 'The Oilympics', and we've got a strong suspicion it will also be the official name. An example of a challenge could be a level in which Left and Right are closed, and then have to mine out all the oil with a limited budget. Each challenge is designed to test your skills in a specific aspect of the game and of course you will be able compete against rival drilling masters on the leaderboards.
Level Replays
Ever wondered why you couldn't get to number one in the Weekly Challenge? With the upcoming replay system you will be able to view how other players went about their business of maximizing profits. And you can also share replays with your friends.
Mobile
Turmoil on mobile! Turmoil is already available for iPad, but we are now also working on a version for mobile phones (you guys all have one, right? ;), and *drumroll*... Nintendo Switch. Nintendo conveniently gave the left and right Switch controllers the same color as the Left and Right Inc. buildings, so who are we to neglect such an obvious hint? While we're happy to share this news right now, there's a difference with what we have in store and what's available in the store. It will take quite some time to get multiplayer working, we have to rebuild the game from scratch for that. So don't expect any of this in 2018. The release on Switch will probably be the first of this list, somewhere in Q1 or Q2 of 2019.
Briquid
In the meantime! If youd like to play another game where you have to move liquid from one place to another, you might want keep an eye on our puzzle game Briquid. Its one of the first games we ever made, and it will now also be available on Steam, on December 6th. You can check it out here.

Dear oil barons,
Update 44 is not the biggest ever. It fixes a strange gas situation that we've found out about quite late. It turned out that growing gas went extra fast when fast forwarding the game. This has been balanced now. And among others, we've also added the option to use the mouse cursor from your operating system. Here's the full list!
Patchnotes for version 2.0.10
- Added option to use the native OS cursor ingame.
- Fixed a drawing issue with oil in pipes if the pipes were built in a specific order.
- Fixed that text on oil drops in the land auction was scaled twice.
- Fixed that the land lease would not be repaid and the land lease bonus not applied when stopping a level through the pause menu (contrary to the finances menu).
- Fixed several inconsistencies in pipe heat and oil to gas conversions between game speeds (this affected the ingame speedup, and did NOT affect 30fps vs 60fps)
[ 2018-05-30 13:03:06 CET ] [ Original post ]
Dear non (or sometimes) spillers of oil,
We're still busy fixing bugs left and right, but we also found the time to balance the game a bit better. It's not a big update, but an update nonetheless!
Turmoil changelog for version 2.0.9
In this update we fixed several issues with treasure generation and the treasures marketplace (thanks to the community members who reported it). The prices and availability on the treasures marketplace has also been made a bit more forgiving. Bugs
- Fixed that the buy/sell prices of treasures in the Underground Collection did not properly scale depending on the area they are found in.
- Fixed that the fog did not rise 2 months faster in The Heat Is On levels as intended.
- Fixed that one artefact of each area would not spawn in that area, requiring you to buy it on the treasures marketplace every time.
- Decreased maximum price that treasures are sold at on the Underground treasures market.
- Increased minimum and maximum price that collectors will offer you on the
- Underground treasures market.
- Collectors on the Underground treasures market will no longer offer to sell you treasures that you already own or offer to buy treasures that you do not own.
- The end-of-level charts now show details when you hover over the appropriate toggle button.

Dear oil entrepreneurs,
After lots of hotfixes following the launch of The Heat Is On, everything’s almost oilright now. We’re still working on some trickier issues, but we’ve also found time to improve the game in other areas than just fixing bugs. The most important one changes the way in which gas is received by Left and Right Inc. Oil prices will from now on react more directly to delivered gas, and it will now also make a difference if you upgrade the pipes that transport gas to Left and Right. We’ve also increased the arrival speed of wagons (which also caused some frustration sometimes). But the best solution to spillage is still to buy enough wagons and upgrade them! For Mac users it’s important to know that we’ve disabled the end-of-game screenshots, as that seemed to be the cause of the crashes that many players were experiencing. Note that this does not affect the flashing oil/gas wells bug.
Changelog for version 2.0.8
Balance
- Gas grown using magma heat will now fill up the existing well before increasing
- the size of the containing well.
- Removed limit on amount of gas sold per second. Connecting multiple pipes to Left or Right Inc. will now make the price go up faster.
- Decreased gas boosting efficiency every $0.50 step from $2.50 and up.
- Increased gas boosting price drop rate at every $1 step from $4 and up. This drop rate only applies when you are no longer boosting. The higher you boost, the quicker it will fall again giving you less time to sell.
- Increased speed of oil conversion
- Decreased heat cost of oil conversion
- Increased brake speed of wagons for all upgrade levels, causing them to arrive at their goal more quickly.
- Decreased decision making interval of wagons from 1.13 seconds to 0.93 seconds, making them respond to full silos and overflowing rigs more quickly.
- Disabled end of game screenshots for Mac OSX as it was causing segmentation and bus errors for a lot of Mac players. Fixed that the game could crash by clicking one of the buildings during a new area introduction.
- Fixed that the start button on the weekly poster would flicker endlessly in some cases of losing your internet connection.
- Fixed that some of the hotkeys would not work during the tutorial.
- Fixed that bank debt did not get saved in the campaign.
- Fixed that the text on the play button would wrap in some languages.
- Fixed that you could not get any land lease payback on a piece of land when loading a campaign with a finished land auction.

Dear oil entrepeneurs,
We have finally finished our work on the DLC campaign for Turmoil! It will be called 'The Heat Is On' and it will be available on the 21st of March! To keep reminding you of this, we've added a countdown timer in Turmoil's title screen. The Heat Is On will have lots of new interesting new mechanics and fun features. You can watch the trailer, read all about it, (and wishlist!) on its Steam page right here: http://store.steampowered.com/app/804760 A bit less exciting, but still very noteworthy are some performance upgrades in Turmoil. The game should run a lot smoother in situations where a lot of gas is being transported. The same goes for situations in which lots of wagons sell oil below $0.25 and above $2.00. And last but not least: performance with anti aliasing on has also been improved. So if you were forced to play without anti aliasing, you might want to give it a try again!
That's oil for now!

Howdy oil and gas people!
We've just updated the game and it's a tiny one. But we're sure it will make a couple of players very happy. Ever since Turmoil launched, we've received the occasional request to make the mouse cursor more visible. You can now make it bigger in the settings menu with a click of the button. So, that's that! And while we've got your attention, why don't we update you a little bit about the upcoming dlc? Here are some random teaser facts with exclamation marks!
- We're close to finishing it! We expect to release it somewhere in the first quarter of 2018.
- There will be a new village, with a new mayor, and his tips are free!
- You can find all sorts of interesting treasures in the underground!
- There's a guy in the Saloon called Philip, and he likes to play cards for money!
- There will be new in-level mechanics! With magma!
- You'll see a lot of new faces, but also some familiar ones!
- The village will have a cat!

Hi all,
We have a small but important update for you: we were able to fix the Audio Bug that has been hounding us.
When a number of sounds would overlap, problems began to arise, but not for everyone. So we couldn't reproduce it ourselves. That was the tricky part. It happened mostly when scanning while building pipes and when the spillage timer and alarm would go off. A pretty normal state for Turmoil players ;) Anyway, we think we solved it. Let us know if it happens again and we’ll look into it further. On a side note, welcome to all the new players. A few new videos have gone up on YouTube and we’re getting new players in as a result. Thanks! Fix Audio Bug. Nuff said. [EDIT] We've kept the reset audio button in the Pause menu, for if and when it happens again. But we hope you will never need it.

This week marks the 25th time that a Weekly Challenge is underway. We've never really given it much attention, so this feels like a good opportunity. Personally, I've enjoyed it a lot. And I'm not the only one. Each week, at least 1500 players take on the nerve-wracking challenge to earn as much cash a possible in just one try. It's way more popular than we expected it to be. A big thank you to all you for that!
Also unexpected is the high level of play. This may sound arrogant, but I did not expect that I'd have such a hard time getting to the top of the ranks. I succeeded in doing this only twice (my nickname is JB), and it took me all of my skills, knowledge, experience and a bit of luck to get the highest score. It's very humbling, as one of the creators of the game, to get beaten pretty badly every now and then. There are a few players that pop up in the top 10 very frequently and seem to be absolute masters of the game. One of them (老沐城) has won the challenge three times. Two other players (Theos and Remensto) have won it two times. A special mention must be given to 90573ice, who finished in the top 10 countless times, including a couple of second place finishes, but has not yet won it. Should be a matter of time! Levels with gas still seem to be quite difficult for the majority of players. While we've made a couple of videos that explain how to best make use of it, based on the widespread rankings, it remains a quite complicated challenge. At the moment, we're hard at work on a new campaign which will be available as DLC in a while. It will still have natural gas, but we've made some good progress in making the oil price boosting mechanic more accessible. Expect more on Turmoil's upcoming DLC in our next post. In the meantime, good luck with this week's Weekly Challenge. It's Bonus Island's turn again. Small tip: if you don't need 40 fully upgraded wagons, you're doing it wrong! ;)
Happy drilling!

Hi all,
We are up to version 1.2.6 of Turmoil. Update #37 - Audio Bully is dedicated to a number of fixes, most importantly the audio bug that repeated certain sound effects continuously. Another bigger fix is that players will now be able to play without an online connection again. After the Weekly Challenge update that was not possible any more.
Here is the full changelist: Fixes
- Audio - Added a reset sound button to the pause menu that will stop all sounds for a moment. Use this when sound gets stuck in a loop.
- UI - Fixed several missing hover sounds, incorrectly centered text and positioning of a few sprites.
- Crash - Game should no longer crash when incorrectly loading the weekly challenge. Check the Discussion here.
- Campaign - William now correctly shows up on level 6 to tell you that the new level length is 12 months.
- Loading times between screens are now shorter.
- Added a confirmation window when returning to main menu from the town.
- Land auction - The AI opponents now take less time to bid on land when playing on a slower computer.
- Localization - Updated several Russian translations.
- Localization - Reduced the scale of some texts that did not fit on specific translations.

Hi all, Today we’ve got a BIG update with new content!
This update brings the Weekly Challenge to Turmoil. Every week everyone will get one chance (and one chance only!) to play the exact same level. Your score will be posted on the Leaderboard where you can compare yourself to the rest of the world and your friends. The Weekly Challenge will feature every Area from the game sequentially, including the Bonus Island. So, get ready and Git Gud.
We have also added a Game Over state in the game. No more borrowing money from the bank until your eyes bleed and you’ve developed a severe case of repetitive strain syndrome. After 3 years of ‘being in the red’ you will now get told to get out of town and try again. Other changes include the ability to send your end of game screenshot to Steam and some rework of the Russian and Chinese translations. Enjoy the update and we’ll see you on the Leaderboards! Below us preferably.

Hi all,
You might have noticed earlier, but Turmoil is now available on iPad. Yes, sorry, iPad only!
We tried out smaller screens, but we couldn't make it work. Digging requires a bit of precision. Mouse and keyboard is easy, fingers are fat. You can now enjoy the 1899 on your couch. LINK We hope you enjoy!

Hi all,
We’ve got another update for you. Today we are adding 4 new languages to the game: Russian, Chinese (simplified), Polish and Brazilian-Portuguese.
This is a bit later than expected, we had to juggle multiple balls at the same time. But it coincides with the release of Turmoil on iPad. Next up for Turmoil is a few fixes and improvements. We are creating a Weekly Challenge and implementing Game Over functionality if you are in debt for too long. After that...we’ll see. We will have to think about the next steps. Enjoy! Ciesz się tym! Наслаждайтесь! 请享用! Bom proveito!

Hi all, So, as promised, here is the first of two updates: Replay Bonus Island. After this we will work on a localization update and try to bring you that ASAP.
The big difference that today’s update brings is that you get control over how you play Single Levels. And that will make it more FUN! We’ve added sliders in the Area select screen that correspond with the Seed number. You will be able to determine how much Oil, Gas and Rock are in a level.
We have also added a new area: the Bonus Island! The island will have MAX Oil, Gas and Rock as that is the way it should be played. It is unlocked when you win the campaign. This brings re-playability of the Bonus Island to you for the first time! And we’re quite happy with that. The Seed number is now a bit longer: 10 digits. This was necessary to incorporate the added custom variables. You can still copy this number and the Area and send it to a friend to have them play the exact same level. Good luck and have fun! Changelist
- Improved Single Level game mode.

Hi all,
Welcome to our newest post of our ‘In the Pipeline’ series. This is our way of letting you know what we are working on, what we are thinking about and what we know we want to do:
In the Pipeline will contain all the items that are literally and figuratively in the pipeline. This will (but does not have to) include crashes to fix, bugs to splat, player suggestions to incorporate and improvements to make that we feel are necessary for the next update.
It’s time to update you on the state of the game and future plans. Players who tuned into the live streams on Twitch (www.twitch.tv/gamiousdev) already heard about it. But here it is for the rest of you:
We’re currently working on two updates. One is a Localization update that adds new languages. The second is an upgrade to the Single Level system. This should allow for a more fun Single Level experience and more re-playability. It will also add the Bonus Island as a re-playable Single Level. We hope to give you both updates before the end of the year. starting with the Single Level update this week! But we’re not entirely sure if we can manage that. If we don’t, you’ll get one update in the next two weeks and one at the start of 2017. What about after those two updates? Well, as always, we’re not sure yet. But we do like to investigate the possibility of more content in the form of a new map/areas. And if we do, we would probably want to add a game mechanic to the game. IF we go that direction we will consider releasing it as paid DLC. We’re also considering more drastic changes to the Single Level game mode that would allow for Leaderboards and Challenges. Full disclosure: We can’t/won’t promise anything besides the aforementioned updates. We love Turmoil and we want to continue working on it, but in the end the (business) decision needs to make sense in order to keep working on it.
- Single Level Improvements
- Localization
- New Map/Area’s
- Single Level Leaderboards and Challenges
- Future content

Hi all,
We’re getting into the rhythm of updating more regularly once more. Today’s update is not huge, but there are some good fixes and a nice new feature. Using your mouse wheel to send Wagons to factories for instance. You won’t have to click anymore if you so choose.
Also important in today’s update is the fact that the AI in Normal Mode has been upgraded. Anyone who watched our live streams on Twitch (www.twitch.tv/gamiousdev) will have noticed that our AI competition was not buying enough upgrades. That has been fixed.
Here is the entire changelist. We will be posting a new In The Pipeline article next week to tell you what we are working on in the coming weeks and months. So stay posted here! New
- Clicking on a building will now open AND close a dialog window. So you don’t have to click X if you don’t want to.
- Mouse wheel scroll can now be used to assign Wagons to factories. You have to hover above the factories to make this work.
- Our new game icon should now also appear in the taskbar.
- Fixed AI not buying enough upgrades. This will also make them score better on their levels!
- Fixed the apostrophe missing in Dollar amounts above 1 million.
- Fixed a few Windows sticking out on the bottom.
- Fixed Oil sticking out of Wagons.
- Fixed Oil being drawn over snow where it should not.

Hi all,
It’s been a while since the last update. We had a vacation, worked on the iPad version, and also on prototypes for a new game, but we’re happy to tell you that we’re back in the saddle again! New updates will continue to be released in the future, and we’re looking forward to enriching the Turmoil experience.
We’ve had so many nice comments on the music in Turmoil that we wanted to start by giving players a chance to also listen to it outside of the game. Imagine how fast you can finish the dishes while listening to ‘Oil Spill Hoedown’! We thought about charging for the soundtrack, but decided that current Turmoil owners should have the tracks regardless. Therefore, we decided to create free DLC in order for all owners of the game to also get the soundtrack automatically. We’ll post another In the Pipeline article in the coming weeks, outlining our plans for content updates. Stay tuned! The music is original and created by our very own Jan Jaap Doeven at Doeven Music(). We hope you enjoy it!
Track list:
01 - Village Life 02 - Coyote Sunset 03 - The Dowser 04 - Black Gold 05 - The Digger 06 - When The Work Is Done 07 - Oil Spill Hoedown

We know that performance is a major issue. And on most systems Turmoil works well. But we want to try and make it even better. After today’s update Turmoil will run smoother on more PC’s. Why? We’ve made the game run at 60FPS (or 30FPS if you want) and we’ve added a toggle for Anti-Aliasing. This should mean that Turmoil runs on more PC’s without issue.
If you do experience a crash now and then, please try and play around with these settings to see if you can get better results.
The game will start in 30FPS and with Anti Aliasing turned OFF.
Full list: New
- Added 60FPS option. You can now choose between 30 and 60FPS.
- Added a toggle for Anti Aliasing.
- Fixed the factory smoke adding up during Pause. This should fix one or two crashes.

Hi all,
The last update aimed to fix an important crash. We’ve not had any new comments in the forum, so it sounds like that did the job. Since that update we’ve had no other major issues pop up either. So the game is in a good state. Time to move forward!
In the mean time will still update, but maybe not as frequent. Today we’ve added another shortcut key. You can now press and hold X to use Fast Forward. So use X to Double Time (2X) it! Here is the small changelist:
- Press and Hold ‘X’ to use Fast Forward.
- The Bird now really doesn’t fly over any windows any more.
- Fixed NPC’s not buying the proper upgrades.
- Fixed NPC’s digging up Diamonds without the upgrade.
- Fixed a visual issue with clouds and the Special Power text overlapping.

Hi all,
Today we are updating the game for the second time since release. We hope that the fixes and changes will help players with the most pressing issues.
The crash that was mentioned most in the forums was the Out of Memory/Vertex Buffer problem. We have changed the way some of the in-game stuff is drawn in order to fix this. So, please try again! If the problem persists, let us know. You can maybe prevent the issue by playing Windowed in 1920x1080. This worked as a fix in some cases. Besides that we’ve fixed and changed a number of smaller issues. Here is the full changelist:
Fixes
- Fixed the way we draw stuff in-game in order to fix the Out of Memory and Vertex Buffer crashes.
- Fixed The end of game report finances not showing bank debt properly.
- Fixed Daisy buying the Diamond upgrade before getting the Mole.
- Fixed a glitch in the end of year report Graphs.
- Fixed money stacks in the profit window showing up tiny in higher resolutions.
- Fixed the bird flying in front of certain UI windows.
- You can now still get offered money for diamonds if you don’t have any. But you will only have a Cancel option.
- Clicking on the map will now also start the Land Auction.
- Removed the erroneous tool tip ‘Upgrade all Wagons’ after upgrading all Wagons.
- Increased the size of the hitbox ‘Dig!’ in town.
- Fast Forward will now stop when you roll off the button with the mouse cursor.

Hi all, Welcome to this first post release update! We'll keep counting on however, so it's update #27. First of all: THANKS! It's been an amazing weekend. We were hoping for a good launch, but the launch exceeded our expectations and we're super happy about it. The only downside to having a massive amount of new players is having some new bugs and crashes pop up. So, in an attempt to help everyone as quick as we can, on Monday, this Monday, we bring the first update. This won't fix every bug or crash. But on short notice we're helping a lot of folks out, so hopefully it works for you. Changelist:
- Fixed 'Invalid Comparison type in gml_Object_god_other_2
- Fixed 'unable to find any instance for object index '29' name 'totalstats''
- Fixed translations not working in the Auction screens.

After almost exactly 1 year, we just hit the 'Leave early Access' button. It has been a great experience for us, and we want to thank all the players for their trust, ideas, and feedback. Turmoil would have been half as good without it.
Leaving Early Access does not mean we will stop working on the game. It does mean that we will do that in a lower frequency. This gives us time to start on a new game, which we're itching to do. Turmoil will however still get updates like Mac support, more single game options (Steam Leaderboards), more languages, extra polish, and who knows what else. We may have left Early Access, we're still open to suggestions from the community. We'll stop rambling and let you play Turmoil again. We've noticed that your level of play is not quite up to our standards. The Oil Tycoon achievement is actually doable.

Drill for oil like it's 1899! Turmoil offers players a visually charming, tongue-in-cheek take on the simulation genre inspired by the 19th century oil rush in North America.

Hi all,
Next Thursday Turmoil is coming out of Early Access. We’re almost there! We have a small update that is mostly devoted to language fixes. We’ve also added Dutch as a language option in this build.
NOTE: we removed some shader FX because they were crashing the game. We're working on it and trying to fix it before release.
Apologies for the aweful image, but we're moving and still unpacking and don't have all our gear. This was quicker :)
New
- Dutch language.
- Added a continue button to the Pause menu
- The buildings in area 4 now all have snow on them as well.
- Added a button for taking out a loan in the finance window.
- The town now also has a bird in it.
- Even newer clouds.

Hi all,
Next Thursday Turmoil is coming out of Early Access. We’re almost there! An important addition to the game are languages and we’ve decided to translate the game in French, German, Spanish, Italian and later also Dutch. Why not [insert your language here]? Well, we want a professional translation and the game has become text heavy over time. So it’s more work and costlier to translate. Adding another language is not possible right now, but after release we will re-evaluate and possibly do [insert your language as well].
Right now we need help with the languages that we do have. If you speak one of the languages in the game, please play the game in that language and let us know of any problems or weird translations. We have a special section in the Steam forums reserved for it: http://steamcommunity.com/app/361280/discussions/1/ NOTE: we know that some languages have issues fitting inside their windows and there are some missing special characters. But let us know in the forums (with a screenshot) and we will try to work them all out before release. Other notable changes: lots of visual stuff and preparations for Launch, June 2nd! New
- Translations for French, German, Spanish and Italian. Dutch will follow later.
- It’s not possible to start drilling from Left and Right Factories. You can now only drill towards them.
- In preparation for Launch we have removed the Area choice when starting a campaign.
- Expert Mode is now locked until Normal Mode has been won.
- Anthony placement is now in the centre of a plot of land. Not great, but at
- least there is no miscommunication.
- New background for the bonus island.
- New clouds, again! But they still need work.
- Title screen small improvements.
- New Single Game screen.
- Diamonds now look the same everywhere.
- Smoke animations in Town.
- New window for choices when starting a game.
- Updated animations in Profits screen.
- Animated bumper for Gamious pre-game.
- Credits screen added.
- Animated joint in Gas pockets when active.
- Interface buttons in Snow area are now green.
- Left and Right Inc joints have a new shape.
- Updated a bunch of windows to fit next to other windows.
- Fix a rare Memory crash when unveiling a level.
- Fixed help text falling behind character
- Fixed the NPC’s buying the Supersilo upgrade before Silo 2.
- New SFX in Title screen, Mayor’s tips, on mouse over and at the typewriter.

Hi all,
We’re gearing up for full release. A lot of work has gone into polish tasks but, as promised, we worked on Steam integration. This week update includes the Steam Achievements and Cloud Saving! We’re not done with Trading Cards yet, that will take a little longer.
Besides that, we also replaced the Title Screen. It’s now animated and it’s awesome. We’re very happy with it. The rest of the changes are mostly visual. Drilling now looks much better, as do the clouds and smoke effects. But there is more still. Check it out when you update the game! New
- Steam Achievements.
- Steam Cloud Saving.
- New Animated Title Screen.
- Added the Gamious bumper on start up.
- Increased AI difficulty in Expert Mode.
- Vignetting effect in-game.
- Drill head and particle effects when drilling.

Hi all,
Thanks for being patient. This has been the longest we have gone without updating the game. So I’ll keep it short as the change list is quite long. One thing: We are still working on the Steam integration stuff. A lot of time has gone into that, but we’re not done yet.
The most important new features are the Mayor’s Tips where, for a small donation, the Mayor will help you with a top tip. It’s all functional now, but the art is not final yet. We’ll work on that in the coming weeks. Other notable changes: building animations and underground art polish. It all looks a lot better underground right now. Enjoy!
New
- Mayor’s Tips – Get the hottest tips from the Mayor, for a small fee.
- New underground art – We’ve redone Rock, polished pipes and joints and smooth it all out with shading.
- Profits screen – Bar graphs say Profits much better than numbers ever did.
- Buildings under construction are now animated.
- New hotkey -- Spacebar to Pause the game.
- Statistics – We’re now tracking total statistics and showing them to the player after the campaign.
- Adjusted Wagon AI to better account for the amount of Oil flowing into the
- Rig. This will help when large amounts of Oil are flowing into the Rig.
- Closing the Valve on the Rig now costs $150, just as the other valves.
- Improved the end of the game experience and transition to Expert Mode.
- Changed the way the world map shows the amount of oil in a plot.
- Thermal colour will now change with each upgrade.
- Rig Joints in an active field now pulse when pumping Oil.
- New text buttons in Town.
- New clouds during the game.
- Numerous text changes.
- New images for Joshua.
- Fixed a number of overlapping UI issues and a few aspect ratio issues.
- Added ambient audio slider (but not working properly yet)
- Added options to hide Tutorial messages and end of level profits screen.
- The Dollar amount on a scan is now near the scan, no longer above ground.
- Loaning money from the bank in the Village is ‘cleaner’ now.
- Several small in-game HUD fixes.
- At the end of the game the world map is cleaned up: removed player portrait and text window.
- Better price indications when upgrading Silo, Rig and Wagons.
- Clicking on the calendar will now open up the Finances window again.
- Changed the money counter.
- Changed the spots that a few of the Town inhabitants walk to.
- Moved the boards next to the portraits exactly 1 pixel to remove a gap.
- Fixed a bug where the Rock drill upgrade would be ‘given’ to a player when hitting Rock.
- Fixed the Expert mode Jim-Bob special power. Other dowsers will not point at the same spot as the start of the level dowser does.
- Fixed NPC’s buying upgrades even after they left the game.
- Fixed an issue with the Stock auction where multiple players could win the auction.
- Fixed a crash that sometimes happened when activating the Thermal upgrade.
- Fixed the wagon upgrade sound going off when you could not pay for the upgrade.
- Fixed windows showing up underneath pipes at the end of a level.

[EDIT] ARGH, Sorry, we just found a bug in one of the new features. We'll get it fixed ASAP and update tonight or tomorrow.
Hey all,
Another heads up, especially for new players:
We will be updating the game TODAY. For the first time in a long time this update will include a SAVE GAME RESET.
As always you can start a new campaign (Normal or Expert Mode) in Area 1, 2, 3 or 4 to minimize the setback.
Info on the contents of the update will follow later today.

Hi all,
It's been a long time since we updated. As mentioned on the stream (which is usually on Tuesday 5pm CEST) we've been working on Steam integrations and Mayor's Tips.
Due to all the changes we will have to RESET all progress. So BE WARNED:
You can of course still start a new campaign (Normal or Expert Mode) in Area 1, 2, 3 or 4. So your loss of progress should be minimal.
We hope to update later this week.

Hi all,
We would like to talk a little bit about what the past ten months have brought us and what we intend to do in the next two. Early Access has been great to us as a company as a whole and for Turmoil specifically. Thanks to you.
When we brought Turmoil to Early Access it was because we needed help with a few things: input on the game, and a larger player base.
We knew that the basis of the game; finding and digging oil, was solid. But the game as a whole lacked substance. Turmoil wasn’t far enough yet to be solid release worth $10. This was felt most notably by us when we thought we had a decent campaign going and players got to play the game and said: “That was one fun evening! Where’s the rest of the game?” We totally overestimated the content and underestimated the pace at which you consumed the game. A nice problem to have, but a problem nonetheless. Feedback Along the way you constantly kept us informed on ideas for Turmoil. And we tried to do the same for you. We updated almost weekly. In the weeks without updates we posted our ‘In The Pipeline’ series, trying to give you a clear picture of what we were working on. Some of your ideas, and a lot of our own, didn’t make it into the game. Multiplayer and infinite mode for instance. We tried to make it clear why features were left out. And mostly this was met with understanding. The problem with larger features like multiplayer is that we have a very small team: 1 programmer, 1 artist, 1 sound designer and 1 musician and 1 game designer helped now and then by others. And everyone part-time! That makes things like multiplayer an impossibility. We did add a lot of other features that originated with your feedback: such as the Gas and Thermal dynamics, The Stock Auction (End game), AI improvements and Diamonds as well as countless other small tweaks and additions. The problem with some of the big game design ideas from players is that very often they would require a new system to be built; adding a huge chunk of work to our already substantial workload. If we can give you a Game Design Tip: try to think of new features and changes that fit in the framework that already exists. It will make it far more likely that a developer can take on your idea. Compare it to a house that is halfway through being built: If you want a new window or a change of colour, that is possible. But if you ask for 2 extra bedrooms and underground parking, when the foundation is already built, there is very little the builder can do. Community Another big part of Early Access for us was generating a larger player base. The player based that was genereated through Early Access slowly morphed into a real community. A community that doesn’t only give input, but helps each other and had a very positive vibe. For us as a company that community transformed into more followers on social media (Twitter and Twitch especially). We don’t have a huge Twitter following, little over 900 now, but it’s a couple of hundreds more than we had when we started. The community is also the reason why we started streaming on Twitch. We started off with 2-3 viewers every week. After posting the Live events in the Steam Community we went up to a peak of 50 and now we have a solid 30 viewers every week. You can imagine the other stuff that a community does for a small developer. It helps your game rise up above the large amount of smaller games trying to make it big and lays a foundation for the release of Turmoil and other games to come. Money Along the way we also made money. Yay! We estimated Turmoil to be in Early Access for 6 months. But because it went better than expected we were able to keep developing and release a much better game after twelve months. Or at least that’s the plan. The money we earned during Early Access has gone back in development for the largest part. The other part has gone to living, eating and developing the business. Overall Early Access has been a blessing for us. And it wouldn’t have been possible without you. We’ve gotten a large amount of useful feedback, ideas and inspiration. We were able to build up a community that was not available to us before. And we earned enough money to spend more time on developing and doing what we love: creating pure and accessible gameplay. Release Now it’s time to get the game ready for release. We are still working on a few new features, but more and more of our time is spent on polish tasks like Steam Achievements and Trading Cards. We believe that we have created a worthwhile and fun game experience. The game’s approval rating is constantly hovering between 90-91% after 426 reviews. In about two months we will go out of Early Access and into the wild trying to build on what we created. But rest assured we also have plans for after release, in the form of free content updates. Early Access has been very valuable to us. We value our interaction with the players enormously. hopefully you feel the same. Thank you. Gamious

Hi all,
Welcome to our newest post of our ‘In the Pipeline’ series.
We updated the game 4 times in 5 weeks. So now we’re taking an extra week to work on new stuff. Although the game has gotten bigger and bigger. We’re quite relieved to see the amount of bugs decrease. Time to look at some bigger tasks again: We’re still working on Mayor’s Tips. We’re looking at improving the Single Level part of the game and we’re starting to dive into the backend of Steam functionality. Now, don’t expect Achievements and Trading Cards in the next build! That will take much more time. But we need to invest some time in the back end to make it possible. One sad note: we’re taking infinite mode off the table for now. We want to release the game in a couple of months and there is still too much stuff that we know we need and want to do. Infinite mode is not something that we see working, but does require a serious development effort. Therefore we won’t be able to explore it right now. We are aiming to have the update live at the end of next week:
- Mayor’s Tips.
- Single Game improvements.
- Steam back end.
- Tweaks, crashes and bugs.
- Mac (and probably Linux).
- Steam Leaderboards.
- Steam Trading cards.
- Steam Achievements.
- Steam Cloud Saves.

Hi all,
This update is quite a big one. We’ve been working on it for a while now: Expert Mode. This new campaign will add a chunk of replayability to the game. Something that you (and we) have wanted for some time. Expert Mode is essentially the same campaign but the AI is much tougher. Be prepared to lose!
To highlight that, there are 4 new characters that you will encounter in Expert Mode: Henry, Lisa, Jim Bob and Larry. Each of these characters has a nice Perk that you, the player, can play with. Expert Mode is playable from the main menu during Early Access. At release players will have to finish the normal campaign first before it unlocks. Besides Expert Mode the Audio in Turmoil has also gotten substantially better this week. We’ve added ambient sounds for every Area. We added a dozen or so new SFX and polished a few as well. So overall the experience has really improved. We’re excited to know what you guys think about it. Here are the specifics for Update #21: New
- Expert Mode – Challenge yourself. This also introduces new playable characters with personal perks: -Jim Bob little cousin will run ahead and mark your first oil field before you even get there. -Larry likes to live large and takes $2500 to each plot instead of $2000 -Lisa charms her way into Barney’s life and never has to pay Spillage fines. -Henry is a Mole's best friend. They will spot a Diamond for him without effort.
- Audio – Ambient sound for every Area. NOTE: this is separate from SFX and Music and does NOT have it’s own volume slider YET.
- Audio - Lots of new Sound FX like Thermal expansion, Stock Auction counter, Drill sounds, end-game stats and more.
- AI – improved balance in NPC earnings after each round.
- Anthony – can now always be found in the Saloon at the start of Area 3 and 4. This makes him much more powerful
- Fixed the end of level screenshot not functioning properly on Fast Forward. (Thanks Asuman1179)
- Dowser animation now properly speeds up when Fast Forwarding.
- Mole animation now properly speeds up when Fast Forwarding.
