We know many Gyrodisc fans were disappointed by the lack of plans for online multiplayer when we first launched the early access back in March. Like you, we have always felt that online play would be a great fit for the game but sadly time constraints and a lack of experience in online development made it impossible to promise this feature at our original launch. Put simply, we wanted to be sure we could make an online version of the game work first. As a result our programming team have been hard at work ever since creating an online prototype of our versus mode and after nearly 9 months of development (with one or two missteps along the way) the result is the Gyrodisc Super League Online Alpha! Initially the alpha will feature an online, ‘Steam friends only’ version of the existing versus mode for up to four players, and a new Find Match menu that you can use to find games hosted by any player on your friend list. You’ll be able to play as all four of the existing playable characters, but will initially only have access to two of the games five court layouts. We’ll be looking to release an update not long after the initial alpha launch to provide access to the remaining court variations. Why ‘Steam friends only’ you ask? Making the initial version connect only to your friends list allows us to focus on getting the core gameplay right, without having to deal with a number of complications like matchmaking and in game communications up front. Naturally though, adding matchmaking support will be a big priority for us before launching the final game and we’ll talk more about that in a later update. Online will be a free update for all Gyrodisc players and will be fully integrated into the game before full release. As this is our first alpha version of the online component though we’ll be making it available in it’s own special testing branch, similar to our Pre-Release branch. This is to avoid destabilising the single player game as we work out the various bugs and issues that are sure to emerge. As we’ve said before, we’re a small team here at Valiant with limited capacity to test and find issues, especially across different hardware setups, so we’ll need help from the community by reporting any problems you run into on our Report a Bug forum. We’d like to end by saying a big thanks to the community for sticking with us and supporting development of the game over the last year. The Gyrodisc Super League Online Alpha will be launching on 28th December 2016 so look out for further instructions on how to get involved over the Christmas period. Happy Holidays! The Valiant Interactive team.
