Development of Gyrodisc Super League Has Been Cancelled

We regret to announce that Valiant Interactive is now in the process of closing down, and as a result there will be no further development of Gyrodisc Super League. The game has been almost entirely self funded, and whilst we’d hoped that early access sales would give us the resources we needed to finish work on it, sales just haven’t come close to what we need to cover the costs of living and maintaining the company, and attempts to find alternative sources of funding sadly haven’t worked out.

Before Valiant Interactive closes its doors for the last time, we’d like to say a huge thank you to those of you who saw what Gyrodisc might have become and chose to back us by buying an early access copy on Steam. Our biggest regret is that we couldn’t get the job done for you. Thanks also to the steam community and everyone who’s supported us over the years, either here on the forums or by turning out to tournaments and events to play the game in person. The experience of enjoying a game (or five) with so many enthusiastic and friendly players has been a great privilege for us, and those memories will stay with us for years to come.

It’s been a remarkable journey and we’re sorry it hasn’t ended the way we hoped. We’d like to say one final thank you to the steam community and our family and friends for their support over the last few years.

The Gyrodisc Super League Online Alpha is live on Steam!

Hey Gyrodisc fans!

Last week we announced that we would soon be bringing the Gyrodisc experience online with the release of our Online Alpha branch, giving those brave early adopters among you the chance to play with your Steam friends from all over the globe. Well, after much testing and some last minute bug fixing Im pleased to announce that the online alpha is now live! A few things to bear in mind before diving in:

  • This first version of the alpha only allows you to join matches hosted by players on your Steam friends list (this will change in later updates when weve had the chance to add more communication features).
  • Initially youll be limited to two of the games court layouts. Well be aiming to roll out the others pretty soon after release.
  • This is very much an alpha version of the online game, and as such were expecting plenty of new issues and bugs that havent shown up in the limited testing we can do ourselves (you can see a list of the known issues were already chasing on the forum here). If you run into bugs while playing the new branch, please do report them on our Report a Bug forum, so we can start squashing the little blighters!

So how can you get the build and have a go? Simple. Just open up the games property pages in Steam, navigate to the Betas tab, and choose Online from the drop down. Steam should then update your build to the online alpha automatically. Once in, you can host an online game by kicking off the versus side select as normal and switching from local to friends mode (youll see the button prompt for this at the top of the screen). To join a game hosted by a friend choose the Find Friend Match option on the main menu.

So what are you waiting for? Switch over to the online branch now and start showing off those mad disc skills. Well see you on the court!

Online Multiplayer is coming to Gyrodisc Super League!

We know many Gyrodisc fans were disappointed by the lack of plans for online multiplayer when we first launched the early access back in March. Like you, we have always felt that online play would be a great fit for the game but sadly time constraints and a lack of experience in online development made it impossible to promise this feature at our original launch. Put simply, we wanted to be sure we could make an online version of the game work first.

As a result our programming team have been hard at work ever since creating an online prototype of our versus mode and after nearly 9 months of development (with one or two missteps along the way) the result is the Gyrodisc Super League Online Alpha!

Initially the alpha will feature an online, ‘Steam friends only’ version of the existing versus mode for up to four players, and a new Find Match menu that you can use to find games hosted by any player on your friend list. You’ll be able to play as all four of the existing playable characters, but will initially only have access to two of the games five court layouts. We’ll be looking to release an update not long after the initial alpha launch to provide access to the remaining court variations.

Why ‘Steam friends only’ you ask? Making the initial version connect only to your friends list allows us to focus on getting the core gameplay right, without having to deal with a number of complications like matchmaking and in game communications up front. Naturally though, adding matchmaking support will be a big priority for us before launching the final game and we’ll talk more about that in a later update.

Online will be a free update for all Gyrodisc players and will be fully integrated into the game before full release. As this is our first alpha version of the online component though we’ll be making it available in it’s own special testing branch, similar to our Pre-Release branch. This is to avoid destabilising the single player game as we work out the various bugs and issues that are sure to emerge. As we’ve said before, we’re a small team here at Valiant with limited capacity to test and find issues, especially across different hardware setups, so we’ll need help from the community by reporting any problems you run into on our Report a Bug forum.

We’d like to end by saying a big thanks to the community for sticking with us and supporting development of the game over the last year. The Gyrodisc Super League Online Alpha will be launching on 28th December 2016 so look out for further instructions on how to get involved over the Christmas period.

Happy Holidays!

The Valiant Interactive team.

Aria takes to the court!

We’ve just released Gyrodisc Super League version 0.3.1 to the main Steam branch, which makes our fourth playable Gyrodisc contestant, Aria Mistry, available to play in game.

Hailing from India, Aria earned her spot in the Gyrodisc Super League when her surprise victory in the Asia-Pacific competition made her the youngest Super League competitor in the game’s history. At just 16 years old, Aria doesn’t have the brute strength or athleticism of some of her rivals, but she more than makes up for that with her unparalleled curving throws that keep her opponents guessing.

In addition to adding Aria to the game, version 0.3.1 adds various smaller improvements including better audience models and a number of animation improvements.

As ever, you can let us know your feedback and report any bugs with the new build on the community forums.

Version 0.3.1 is now live on the pre-release branch!

With summer now in full swing, it’s been some time since our last update here on Steam, but we’re finally ready to show people at least part of what we’ve been up to for the last couple of months here at Valiant.

To that end, we’ve just released Gyrodisc Super League v0.3.1 to the Steam pre-release branch, which brings with it our fourth playable character: the irrepressible Aria Mistry! Hailing from India, Aria lacks the raw power that characters like Ivar and John bring to the table and is a little less nimble than Jess. But what she lacks in pure athleticism she makes up for with her mastery of tricky curving shots that can easily wrong foot opponents. In addition, she’s armed with a unique dive that allows her to recover more easily from a misjudged lunge, and is a little quicker than the others whilst charging making opportunistic super moves more of an option.

In addition to Aria’s debut, this update also adds some improved audience models to the arena, and various animation improvements including new strafing animations for the players during the super charge and serve.

Switch over to the prerelease branch in the game’s properties on Steam if you want to check out the new features. As ever we look forward to hearing your feedback on the discussion forum, and please report any bugs you encounter in the relevant Report a Bug forum.

Patch notes:
Gameplay:

  • Added the fourth playable character to the Gyrodisc Super League roster: Aria.
  • Tweaked the layouts for the Two Nets Two Walls and Chokepoint courts to make it a little easier to throw the disc when close to the centre walls.
  • All character celebrations are now available for use in arcade control mode (control select will now prompt you to choose buttons for celebration 3 and 4 in this case).
  • The game now pauses automatically when activating the steam UI

Bug fixes:

  • The disc no longer gets stuck in its on side animation when caught during the super lob spin.

Animation:

  • New strafing animations added for all characters during super charges and serving.
  • Improvements to character celebration anims.

Introducing Gyrodisc’s third playable character: Ivar!

Gyrodisc Super League version 0.2.9 has just been released on the main Steam branch, and with it comes our latest playable character, Ivar Vidarsson.

A long time veteran player and ex Gyrodisc champion, Ivar certainly hasn’t let his more advanced age interfere with his workout routine! As Gyrodisc's muscle character, Ivar focuses on overwhelming his opponents with big powerful shots. He’s a bit slower than John and Jess though, so watch out for those sneaky overhead lobs.

In addition to introducing our third character, v0.2.9 contains a number of gameplay tweaks and animation improvements to the game as a whole.

As ever, you can let us know your feedback and report any bugs with the new build on the community forums.

Version 0.2.7 is now live on the pre-release branch!

It’s been a busy few weeks here at Valiant, with our devs hard at work adding new features to the game, and squashing some of the more troublesome bugs we’ve encountered in testing. This week we’ve been focused on improving stability in preparation for releasing the first batch of these new features out into the wild.

The result is Gyrodisc Super League v0.2.7, which is now live on our Steam pre-release branch ready for testing. The biggest new addition is the release of our third playable character, the veteran Gyrodisc champion Ivar Vidarsson! Ivar is a giant of the game (in more ways than one), and his larger catch box and powerful throws make him a formidable opponent on court. Unfortunately he’s not as spry as he once was, so you’ll need to plan carefully if you don’t want to get caught out by those tricky overhead lobs.

Other notable changes include a number of animation improvements (such as unique character specific idle and diving animations and an improved catch and throw sequence) a simple ‘Tutorial’ screen to explain some of the game’s core controls, and a new ‘Exact angle’ control option that aims to map your throwing angle more closely to the actual analogue stick direction (rather than the current ‘normalised’ system that spreads the possible angles across the whole stick range). Check out the full patch notes below for a more comprehensive list of the changes.

As ever we look forward to hearing your feedback on the discussion forum, and please report any bugs you encounter in the relevant Report a Bug forum so we can get to them as quickly as possible.

Patch notes:

Gameplay:

  • Added a third playable character to the Gyrodisc Super League roster: Ivar.
  • Added a new ‘Exact angle’ option (available in the control options screen), which removes the normalisation from the throwing angle when using controllers.
  • Diving into other players now causes them to lob the disc up in the air, instead of instantly dropping it.
  • Player’s are now briefly invincible after being hit by dives

Bug fixes:

  • Players can no longer accidentally remove themselves from a team after selecting go on side select
  • Fixed some issues where the disc could escape the court in rare cases
  • Fixed an issue where players could sometimes be hit in the back of the head by the disc from incorrect angles

Animation:

  • Added unique idle animations for all characters.
  • Added unique diving animations for all characters.
  • Added an improved catch and throw animation sequence.

Engine:

  • Updated to the latest unity version release to fix some texture corruption issues when changing display resolutions.
  • Closer integration with Steam to pave the way for later features.

UI / Menus

  • Added a new ‘tutorial’ screen, with some handy illustrative videos of the various moves available in Gyrodisc.

We are very excited to announce that the Early Access version of Gyrodisc Super League is now available for purchase on Steam!
We’d like to thank everyone who has supported us so far, whether that was through voting in Steam Greenlight, downloading our demo, sending us feedback or spreading the word- all of it has been greatly appreciated.
We have set up our Steam Community Discussions page in preparation for release. You’ll find subforums there for bug reporting, feedback and suggestions, and a general discussion forum for anything a little more off topic. There’s also an FAQ that should help to answer some more common queries about the game.
