Patch 1 Live!

Hi everyone! So Patch number 1 is live now and here is the list of changes we've introduced:

  • 999x combo achievement is now working
  • You have a lot more control over the screen sizes. Besides the default size it will list all the screen sizes your monitor or screen would list in the screen resolution options
  • The game screen now keeps aspect ratio (1x, 2x, 3x etc). If you pick a screen size in between aspect ratios it will use a black border to fill in the gaps around the biggest aspect ratio it can fit
  • Fixed the level 7 crash, which was actually the ally Andy being broken. Not many people choose him to use, so that's why not many people reported the bug. Poor old Andy hahaha
  • Tried to make the buttons less confusing. If in doubt, change the controls in the option screen
Also included are specific fixes for Linux and Mac:

Mac Patch

Somehow it looks like full screen is working now! Let me know if you run across issues.

Linux

I fixed the gamepad save files and players should be able to use Xbox controllers and change their buttons properly like everyone else. If you run into issues, let me know. And that's it for now! Play safe this Halloween and have fun wrecking in the game :D -Cheers, Matt

Updates and Fixes Ahoy!

Hi, Matt here, lead developer on this game. It's speak like a pirate day here in Australia and its time to look at support for this game, Yarrr! Ok, so here's a list of reported problems I'm going to tackle first: 1) Level 7 Crash: Artemis Chanchan reported that the game crashes on level 7, so that's definitely up first. If anyone else is experiencing this let me know. It would be good to know if its a once off or a pattern. 2) Fix Un-Achieveable Achievements: Based on what we're seeing in the stats, the 999x combo achievement isn't unlocking. We've verified this one too, and I'll look into solving it so we can all 100% this bad boy. 3) Confusing Button UI: Watching Youtubers play the game has shown us players are struggling with the A, B and C onscreen control prompts not _actually_ corresponding to gamepad inputs. We're not able to implement interactive button prompts for tech reasons, but I want to do a better job of at least explaining the inputs before jumping into the game proper. 4) Screen Sizes: People want to play in 16:9. This one isn't game breaking, but we can see it's annoying! I started this project about 8 years ago and made some bad assumptions about screen sizes and didn't play with this enough as its quite a bit of code to change around. But let's fix it. I'll come up with a solution that's going to maintain our aspect ratio for crisp pixels, but also let you play in a reasonable modern resolution. That's all of the problems we're aware of so far. If you've noticed anything else or would like to offer suggestions, then drop us a comment below! :D This game does not feature enough pirates, yarrr.... But lets set sail on the seas of support! -Cheers, Matt

Updates for Bundle Purchasers

Hey wreckers, I know a lot of you bought the game in bundles and are still waiting on your keys. So this thread is to keep everyone updated on the status of all of those, and also to let you know how to redeem your keys where manual collection is required. So, going by bundle/promo:

  • LazyGuys Bundle: I've received confirmation these have been emailed to players. If you're waiting on one, check your inbox.
  • IndieGala Bundle: We've sent them the keys, now just waiting for them to send them out to players. I've heard they're notoriously slow at doing this, but they should hopefully be on their way.
  • IndieGameStand PYWY: if you bought the game on IGS, you can redeem through the IGS backend. Just go to your game wallet and hit "Request Steam Key" on Fatal Theory.
  • BundleBandits & IndieRoyale: These bundles were trickier, because the folks who ran them are no longer around. So what I've done is create a portal where you can request a Steam key by entering your Desura key from either of those two bundles (keys from other bundles won't work). You can find it here: http://www.2hitstudio.com/key-portal/ Please note, there is a turnover time of ~1 day on these requests.
And that should about cover it! Hit me up if you have any questions or comments, hopefully we can get the game in your hands ASAP. Cheers, 2HitAdam

Important Information for Mac Players!

IF YOU'RE A MAC OSX USER THINKING TO BUY, PLEASE READ THIS. We encountered an issue with our Mac OSX builds where toggling to fullscreen would outright crash the game. We've removed fullscreen from the display menu, but added extra windowed screen sizes so you can still enjoy it at a larger resolution. We can easily add new screen sizes to the list too. If it's still too small for whatever massive display you may have, let us know your screen size and we can work with it. But we just can't do actual full screen. From our tests it seems to be a problem with the framework we built the game in, SDL 1.2 (although we'd love to be proven wrong on this, because it'd mean we could fix it). If that's the case, our only option would be to migrate the game to SDL 2, which at this point would be a massive rewrite all for the sake of fullscreen compatibility on Mac. We just don't have the time or resources to do something like that. So different window resolutions is all we have to play with right now. It's disappointing I know! We wish it worked too. But windowed isn't so bad, and the gameplay is worth it. If you're teetering on the edge and wondering if you should still buy given the issue, remember you have 2 hours in which you can get a full refund on the game -- use it! Try it first. And let us know your thoughts either way :) Cheers, 2HitAdam

Fatal Theory Linux Content [326.89 M]

  • Public Linux depots

  • Fatal Theory is nostalgic beat-em-up action with a fresh twist of ENDLESS AERIAL RAVE COMBOS and a killer illustrated story. Exercise your carnage muscle by smashing through huge hordes of unlovable fiends, meet a bizarre cast of characters (and subsequently slay a good 90% of them in wicked boss battles) and take your crummy city back from the forces of hell!

    Chunky retro pixels: check.
    Tight, fluid controls: check.
    Combat cranked to 11: check.
Story that makes the writer want to drink until he forgets: check!

    The Story

You play as Nick Mayhem, who has just had his night RUDELY INTERRUPTED by news of the dead walking the streets and doesn't think twice before picking up a baseball bat and taking the fray head on! Soon Nick will find himself tangled up with screwy demon generals and their armies of hell, fighting his way to the head honcho with only a judgemental talking sword for guidance.

Can Nick Mayhem save his city from destruction?

Will he find love in a city mid-apocalypse?!?

    The Game

Wreak havoc through huge waves of enemies and 9 nifty boss battles. Execute chaotic special attacks by filling your rage bar and pulling off Street Fighter-esque button combinations. String together big combos and be rewarded with a big damage multiplier. Unlock 6 weapons and level them up to gain new special attacks to wreck fools with. Make cold cash by completing levels, spend it pumping up Nick's stats to get stronger. Do it all while enjoying an off-beat, darkly humorous story illustrated in cool comic book style.

    The Features

    • Fully illustrated, darkly humorous story mode
    • Power up! Find new weapons, level them up to unlock devastating new special attacks, and pump up Nick's stats at the shop.
    • Local multiplayer: co-op in arcade mode or duke it out in versus, with gamepad support for 1-2 controllers.
    • Survival mode - destroy all comers, forever!
    • Mod friendly: literally everything in the game can be reskinned.

    The Heart

Fatal Theory is a game crafted with love by two brothers who tried to make a simple 2D fighting game and got completely carried away. Matt coded the entire engine and game from scratch, did the bulk of the character animations, and illustrated the story. Adam wrote the dialogue, filled in the background art with life and detail, did the other portion of character animations and generally spit-shined things. The game has been in on-and-off development and various states of release for years, but we're proud to say this is the best version yet.
