SodaCity 1.2 - UX Update

Because all the feedback we received and the post release experience we had, we were able to see the game from another perspective. That allowed us to make in this version the fixes, modifications and new implementations in order to make SodaCity the best it could be. We know SodaCity has some design flaws, there are some things we could have done better but generally speaking we think it has good and great things. We upgraded the game engine from Unity 4.3 to Unity 5.3 gaining some performance improvements as well as new features like the in-game sound mixer. As we were already fixing the game to fit the new game engine, we revisited the game to make improvements on different areas of the game like: weapon settings and behavior, enemy hitpoints and damage, general game progression, improved the feedback to the user, etc. With all these changes we aimed to keep the original 'vibe' of SodaCity while improving the general game experience.

Major Changes:

  • Code base migrated from Unity 4.3 to Unity 5.3.
  • Improved gameplay UI.
  • Mixed in-game audio.
  • Added reverb SFX per level.
  • Linux version.
  • New drop animation.
  • Enemies won't fire if not completely on screen.
  • Improved controller input.
  • Reduced enemies armor points for the first 3 zones.
  • Reduced KanLee's Crossbow damage.
  • Increased SMGs damage.
  • Decreased SMG burst rate.
  • Increased Rifles damage.
  • Decreased Rifles burst rate.
  • Decreased Crossbow reload speed.
  • Decreased Weapon in-game prices.
  • Decreased Weapon upgrades in-game prices.
  • Increased arrow in-game price.
  • Decreased grenade in-game price.
Please help us spread the word. Post your reviews on Steam, only with your feedback we will know what we did right and what we did wrong. We hope you enjoy and like this new version. Please feel free to contact us for any comments or questions you may have. Thank you to the people that has been playing SodaCity. and to the ones that shared their feedback with us.

SodaCity 1.1 - Achievements Update

Thanks for playing SodaCity. The following list includes fixes, changes and new implementations that were based on your feedback. If you are experiencing a problem or having trouble with something please let us know. We feel the need to address the following points in particular:

Screen borders

We made adjustments to constrain the action to the visible playable area. That means that enemies can't shoot from outside the screen borders even if they have a clear shot to the player. Please be advised that if even a fraction of the enemy sprite is rendered to the screen it will be considered to be inside the screen borders. Also the player bullets will be destroyed when going past the screen borders.

Level progress indicator

The level progress is shown as a percentage (0% to 100%). It doesn't shows real time progress It is only updated each time one of the internal components that drives the level logic completes its actions. So it will change on given intervals. for example if a level has five level logic components it will go from 0% to 20% when the first one completes and then change to 40% when the second one completes and so on. It is meant to give the player a vague idea about the length of the level.

New or altered features:

  • Enemies can't shoot from outside screen borders.
  • Player bullets won't pass the screen borders.
  • Doubled blue shield armor value.
  • Escape level camera offset.
  • Adjusted Go indicators position, to avoid covering the playable area.
  • Armors now have a fixed price of 250 staytabs at the hideout.
  • Limited the number of buy-able armors to 4 at the hideout.
  • Recommended to play with controllers splash screen.
  • Mouse cursor hides while inactive.
  • Player can fire with mouse click and fire grenade (when applicable) with right click.
  • Added Killshot/slow-mo effect explanation at the Tutorial.
  • Added Killshot/slow-mo effect explanation at the Loading screen.
  • 34 Steam Achievements.
  • Reduced E.S.E.'s Tactical rifle damage by 66%.
  • Reduced KanLee's dual .45mm damage by 20%.
  • Display Level progress.

Fixes:

  • UI not rendering when alt-tabbing outside the game application.
  • Camera scaling to fit most resolutions.
  • Slow-mo won't be triggered by crate boxes.
  • Dossier typos.
  • Player death by explosions counting towards score.
  • Player death by explosions counting towards score.
  • Mute menus SFXs.
  • Crash when entering a level without a weapon equipped at the first slot.
  • Enemies can't drop items outside the playable area.

History

SodaCity is a fictional metropolis where inhabitants are soda cans, dominated by the organized crime, violence and warfare.

You play as Mr. Redd, who’s on a personal vendetta against SodaCity’s organized crime. Mr. Redd is a retired bounty hunter who seeks to avenge his brother’s death, carrying a one-can assault on every single criminal territory until he destroys every one of the city’s bosses.

Features

Experience a modern take on old school game genres:
SodaCity is heavily based on classic beat ‘em ups from the SNES era but the main gameplay mechanic is shooting, so we ended with a shoot ‘em up with the weird, tilted, 2.5D perspective of classic beat ‘em ups.

Try out 38 upgradeable weapons:
Weapons differentiate themselves by their different stats, which are: Damage, Range, Ammo per clip, reload speed, Rate of Fire. We focused on making every weapon type relevant for different situations.

Fight your way across 18 levels in 6 different zones:
As you progress through the game, you will dismantle parts of the main crime organization. The difficulty progresses as more “intelligent” and “emotionally” stable enemies appear with more powerful weapons.

Overcome 7 boss battles:
Each boss is the leader of an specific crime group. In order to clear a zone you need to beat the corresponding boss.
Boss fights operate as separate levels. Each boss have unique attacks that offer a different type of challenge.

Bullet Time!
Each kill has a small probability of activating the bullet time effect, in which time slows down but the player gets to move faster than the enemies, offering an advantage for a limited time. It’s possible to add time by increasing the combo meter.

Full controller support:
Because the amount of challenge and the comfort that a controller provides, we recommend to play SodaCity with controller.
On PC the game was developed and tested using a wired Xbox360 gamepad controller.
On Mac the game was developed and tested using a PS3 gamepad controller.
