Kopanito has been updated to v1.0.2 with many improvements and some bugfixes. Most of the improvements come from the Community's feedback.
27 new national teams
Yep, we've added another 27 national teams, including Vatican, because why not :) Africa: Kenya, Somalia, Sudan, Uganda Asia: Afghanistan, Bhutan, Cambodia, Hong Kong, Kazakhstan, Nepal, North Korea, Pakistan, Yemen Europe: Belarus, Cyprus, Estonia, Georgia, Gibraltar, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Malta, Monaco, San Marino, Vatican Oceania: Indonesia, Philippines This gives 149 teams in total in the game.
Customizable passes
Kopanito comes with two pass types: assisted (default, easier) and manual (when holding Shift/LT). You can read more about passing in the in-game Guide. The assisted passes can be chained, but pass receiver is vulnerable and it's easier to intercept such a pass. Manual passes allows to use air shots, precisely set pass direction (on a gamepad) and gives freedom when receiving the ball. From this version it's possible to customize passing by choosing one of the available modes per controller:
- Assisted only - making manual passes won't be possible at all, good for kids.
- Assisted preferred (default) - assisted passes by pressing A/S keys or A/X buttons and manual pass by holding Shift/LT when passing.
- Manual preferred (reversed) - manual passes by default by just pressing A/S keys or A/X buttons and assisted passes by holding Shift/LT when passing.
- Manual only - assisted passes won't be possible at all, good for advanced players.
Disabling controllers
Added ability to disable specific controllers in the controls options menu. Input from a disabled controller will be ignored by the game. If you have a flight stick or some kind of advanced mouse that registers as a controller, you can now disable them in the game.
Other controller-related improvements:
- Pressing any key on a controller doesn't activate it anymore. Spacebar or Start button must be pressed to toggle keyboard or a gamepad. This fixes keyboard being activated when pressing keys in Steam Overlay (e.g. accepting invite).
- Direction pad on a gamepad can now be used in the menu and in the game like the left stick.
- Updated layout of the controller configuration screens, grouped controls by type, added headings.
- Added ability to clear key assigments by pressing Delete/Backspace.
- Fixed "Can't connect receiver to a signal" (thanks jose1711).
Other additions and fixes:
- Fixed Tesla-copter invisible sometimes during replays.
- Fixed the "Cannot set property 'value' of undefined" error (thanks Dontasciime).
- No slow-motion when the ball changes direction and isn't heading into a goal anymore.
- Fixed black holes after slide tackles in goals on the Indoor and Ice rink stadiums.
- User performing goalkeeper's slide tackle takes control of the goalkeeper if he traps the ball (previously random user took control).

The new content for Holidays 2016
Four new teams available in the game: Elves, Reindeers, Santas, Snowmen (the new teams won't be removed after holidays, they will stay forever). New stadium with an ice surface, similar to the Indoor Stadium. Doesn't change physics of the game yet, but looks cool :kopanitosmile:
New super-move: Tesla-copter
This is 6th super-move available in the game. It's a flying machine shocking players in radius.
Tesla-copter always follows a player with the ball and allows him to shock other players in radius. There are 4 charges, after using the last one tesla-copter flies away. Important: losing the ball means also losing control of the tesla-copter!

- Goal replays now work in online matches. They cannot be disabled or skipped for now, but they are short, so hopefully it's not a problem.
- Added Polish translation. Other translations will come soon.
- Fixed shadows in the podium scene after a tournament (thanks Samuel Dodee).
- Renamed "How To Play" to "Guide", added more content and made minor tweaks to increase text readability.
- Unlocked red and blue classic balls as they may be used on the new Ice stadium.
- Fixed player colors on the match summary screen.
- Fixed invalid user info on goals after client has disconnected from an online match.
- Fixed not being able to activate a controller in the menu using the Start button.

Kopanito is now more than 2 years in constant development. Everything started back in July 2014. For the first year the game was developed internally and then we decided to hit Steam Greenlight. This is also our first game!
This post is a short summary of the whole Early Access period, which is now ending (and we like summaries). Leaving Early Access is a big milestone for us too.
If you've monitored the game's progress for some time, then this post may give you a better picture of the whole development process overall. Hopefully you will find this lecture interesting.
The Idea behind Kopanito
So why to make an arcade 2D football game in 2016? We've started working on the game in 2014. From our research it appeared that there weren't many popular arcade football games available on Steam. And having a choice is a good thing. Clear inspirations for the game were classics such as Nintendo World Cup (graphics, crazy super-moves), Sensible Soccer and Kick Off (skill-based gameplay). We've spent countless hours on these games 20 years ago :kopanitosmile: So why not to make something similar today? What does skill-based mean? It means, that you need to learn the game's mechanic over time (like in real life football). You need to work out your precision and reflexes to be a better player. Luck means little in Kopanito. The better player just wins and there aren't footballer stats that can help you. You are the stats. Super-moves also are skill-based, the better you play, the more of them you gain during a match. Some super-moves can neutralize opponent's super-moves. Kopanito is also a game that we wanted to play. To bring back fun to football games. We've made it with love, working sometimes on weekends or in overtime, being vocal on the forums and responding to the issues reported.
Greenlit in 2015
17-26 August 2015 Kopanito is on Steam thanks to the Steam Greenlight process and votes by the community. The 9 voting days were very stressful for us (as probably for most indie devs). Early Access
17 September 2015 - v0.2 Kopanito has been released initially on Windows and OS X (Linux support came later). At start there were 104 national teams in the game, 7 stadiums, 4 super-moves, practice mode, friendly matches, 7 tournaments and local multi-player. The graphics were a little simpler. There was no higher AI levels, only the beginner AI.
Pixel Heaven and Pozna Game Arena 2015
September & October 2015 These are two gaming events organized in Poland. Pixel Heaven takes place in Warsaw and PGA takes place in Pozna (our home town). It was great time and first occasion to observe how a greater audience react to the game. There were guys playing, kids playing and even girls playing the game and had great fun! Kopanito got 5 awards during these events: Best Gameplay, Big Bang!, Retro Roots, Revelation and Grand Prix. The last one awarded by the audience votes, the rest awarded by the jury. Difficulty levels, more tournaments and teams
25 November 2015 - v0.3 Previously only the beginner AI was available, but now there are 3 more, giving a total of four of them: beginner, amateur, professional and legend (the last one must be unlocked). This was first time when the game was available on Linux and Steam OS. Kopanito got translated back then to several languages, but later we've decided to remove translations until game's features will 'settle'. Localization support will return soon. Other stuff added: 9 more competitions to complete: Pacific League, Microstates Cup, Central American and Caribbean League, Pan Arab League, Commonwealth Cup, Pan American League, Mediterranean League, Continental League and World League, 10 new teams: Angola, Bulgaria, India, Israel, Luxembourg, Morocco, Northern Ireland, Puerto Rico, Republic of Ireland and Thailand. Leaderboards and match challenges
21 December 2015 - v0.4 The leaderboards in Kopanito were organized into 4 leagues: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. Playing matches (alone or in co-op or online) gives you fame points. Completing match challenges (see the image below) will give you even more fame. The more fame you have, the higher you will be in the global ranking. Advancing to a higher league requires to accumulate given amount of fame shown on the leaderboards screen, different for each league. Each league is also limited in capacity.
Match challenges are additional objectives that can be completed during a tournament match (against AI). There are 31 different challenges in the game as of v0.9. Some examples:
- "Do not concede a single goal in a match"
- "Score a goal by dribbling past the goal line with the ball"
- "Score a goal using the teleport super-move"
- "Cancel a super-shot using the ball magnet"
- and more...
Steam Trading Cards
29 December 2015 Trading Cards, badges, emoticons and profile backgrounds landed on Steam for You to collect :kopanitosmile: Each trading card is a fragment of a greater illustration from a match situation. It took several weeks to paint them by our illustrator.
Achievements and custom tournaments
29 January 2016 - v0.5 The Trophies screen got added to Kopanito with 225 achievements to complete (later reduced to 224). Most of the achievements are quadruple (bronze, silver, gold and platinum), so for example winning Oceania Cup on the Legend difficulty level gives you 4 achievements (one per difficulty level). There are 70 unique achievements. Custom Tournament is a perfect thing for parties with friends. Each friend controls one national team and you organize a cup for them, eg. World Cup, European Cup or Champions League. This is basic, but you can also do more crazy stuff, as there may be more than one human per team. Custom Tournament can be started in one of the three formats:
- League (round-robin) with 4-16 teams,
- Knock-out stage only with 4, 8 or 16 teams,
- Group stage with knock-out stage with 12-32 teams.
Freeze super-move, replays and GIF generator
1 April 2016 - v0.6 The new (back then) Freeze super-move allows you to embed nearby players in an ice-block (except goalkeepers). Note that you may also freeze your teammates too. Frozen players wont participate in the game for some time. You can slide tackle a frozen teammate to defrost him faster. The ball can also be frozen or, actually stopped, even in mid-air. It's a good method to cancel opponent's shots, including super-shot. Try it for yourself :) Also action replays got added, activated automatically after goals. It's a side-product of online multi-player which was then in development. Up to last 8 seconds are recorded and can be replayed back. An action replay also can be processed into a GIF animation. This feature was inspired by the first GIF animation uploaded by one of the community members. Greater collection of player-generated GIFs can be seen on the Artworks section of the Community Hub.
Headers, bicycle kicks and manual passes introduced
10 June 2016 - v0.7 This update introduced important gameplay improvements. We've added headers and bicycle kicks to the game and modified the ground passes to work similarly to lob passes.
The game got more challenging too by adding manual passes (previously these were assisted). Manual passes require more precision, but also introduced more diversity in pitch situations. Kopanito got even more skill-based. The more you play, the better you are.
Online multi-player introduced
17 August 2016 - v0.8 The big day has come. It took us a few long months to implement the online modes on an already working game (which is harder to do than doing in it from the start). You can play with other players around the world in quick match modes: Duel (1 vs 1), Doubles (2 vs 2), Chaos (3 vs 3), Complete (5 vs 5). The Create Party mode allows to customize an online match by choosing teams, stadium, decide of the match duration and invite friends to play against. Neat feature is that local friends can participate in online modes too.
Indoor stadium
1 September 2016 The new Indoor Stadium has walls around. It means that there are no throw-ins, corner kicks and goal kicks during a match, the game is faster this way. A tournament taking place in this stadium is present in the game too. Adding this stadium to the game is a direct result of the poll organized in the game's Community Hub on Steam. Thanks everyone for voting!
Halloween teams, improved corners, automatic passes
28 October 2016 - v0.9 4 new teams have been added to the game related to Halloween: Vampires, Zombies, Werewolves and Pumpkins. Corner kicks now allow for more options. You can make a ground pass, a lob pass or a precise shot at the goal. The automatic (assisted) passes are back in this update but along with the manual passes. Two passing systems give best result and improves depth of the game.

⚽️ The Idea behind Kopanito
So why to make an arcade 2D football game in 2016? We've started working on the game in 2014. From our research it appeared that there weren't many popular arcade football games available on Steam. And having a choice is a good thing. Clear inspirations for the game were classics such as Nintendo World Cup (graphics, crazy super-moves), Sensible Soccer and Kick Off (skill-based gameplay). We've spent countless hours on these games 20 years ago ːkopanitosmileː So why not to make something similar today? What does skill-based mean? It means, that you need to learn the game's mechanic over time (like in real life football). You need to work out your precision and reflexes to be a better player. Luck means little in Kopanito. The better player just wins and there aren't footballer stats that can help you. You are the stats. Super-moves also are skill-based, the better you play, the more of them you gain during a match. Some super-moves can neutralize opponent's super-moves. Kopanito is also a game that we wanted to play. To bring back fun to football games. We've made it with love, working sometimes on weekends or in overtime, being vocal on the forums and responding to the issues reported.
⚽️ Greenlit in 2015
17-26 August 2015 Kopanito is on Steam thanks to the Steam Greenlight process and votes by the community. The 9 voting days were very stressful for us (as probably for most indie devs). ⚽️ Early Access
17 September 2015 - v0.2 Kopanito has been released initially on Windows and OS X (Linux support came later). At start there were 104 national teams in the game, 7 stadiums, 4 super-moves, practice mode, friendly matches, 7 tournaments and local multi-player. The graphics were a little simpler. There was no higher AI levels, only the beginner AI.
⚽️ Pixel Heaven and Poznań Game Arena 2015
September & October 2015 These are two gaming events organized in Poland. Pixel Heaven takes place in Warsaw and PGA takes place in Poznań (our home town). It was great time and first occasion to observe how a greater audience react to the game. There were guys playing, kids playing and even girls playing the game and had great fun! Kopanito got 5 awards during these events: Best Gameplay, Big Bang!, Retro Roots, Revelation and Grand Prix. ⚽️ Difficulty levels, more tournaments and teams
25 November 2015 - v0.3 Previously only the beginner AI was available, but now there are 3 more, giving a total of four of them: beginner, amateur, professional and legend (the last one must be unlocked). This was first time when the game was available on Linux and Steam OS. Kopanito got translated back then to several languages, but later we've decided to remove translations until game's features will 'settle'. Localization support will return soon. Other stuff added: ► 9 more competitions to complete: Pacific League, Microstates Cup, Central American and Caribbean League, Pan Arab League, Commonwealth Cup, Pan American League, Mediterranean League, Continental League and World League, ► 10 new teams: Angola, Bulgaria, India, Israel, Luxembourg, Morocco, Northern Ireland, Puerto Rico, Republic of Ireland and Thailand. ► The "How to play" guide in the game.
⚽️ Leaderboards and match challenges
21 December 2015 - v0.4 The leaderboards in Kopanito were organized into 4 leagues: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. Playing matches (alone or in co-op or online) gives you fame points. Completing match challenges (see the image below) will give you even more fame. The more fame you have, the higher you will be in the global ranking. Advancing to a higher league requires to accumulate given amount of fame shown on the leaderboards screen, different for each league. Each league is also limited in capacity.
Match challenges are additional objectives that can be completed during a tournament match (against AI). There are 31 different challenges in the game as of v0.9. Some examples:
- "Do not concede a single goal in a match"
- "Score a goal by dribbling past the goal line with the ball"
- "Score a goal using the teleport super-move"
- "Cancel a super-shot using the ball magnet"

⚽️ Steam Trading Cards
29 December 2015 Trading Cards, badges, emoticons and profile backgrounds landed on Steam for You to collect ːkopanitosmileː Each trading card is a fragment of a greater illustration from a match situation. It took several weeks to paint them by our illustrator.
⚽️ Achievements and custom tournaments
29 January 2016 - v0.5 The Trophies screen got added to Kopanito with 225 achievements to complete (later reduced to 224). Most of the achievements are quadruple (bronze, silver, gold and platinum), so for example winning Oceania Cup on the Legend difficulty level gives you 4 achievements (one per difficulty level). There are 70 unique achievements. Custom Tournament is a perfect thing for parties with friends. Each friend controls one national team and you organize a cup for them, eg. World Cup, European Cup or Champions League. This is basic, but you can also do more crazy stuff, as there may be more than one human per team. Custom Tournament can be started in one of the three formats:
- League (round-robin) with 4-16 teams,
- Knock-out stage only with 4, 8 or 16 teams,
- Group stage with knock-out stage with 12-32 teams.
⚽️ Freeze super-move, replays and GIF generator
1 April 2016 - v0.6 The new (back then) Freeze super-move allows you to embed nearby players in an ice-block (except goalkeepers). Note that you may also freeze your teammates too. Frozen players wont participate in the game for some time. You can slide tackle a frozen teammate to defrost him faster. The ball can also be frozen or, actually stopped, even in mid-air. It's a good method to cancel opponent's shots, including super-shot. Try it for yourself :) Also action replays got added, activated automatically after goals. It's a side-product of online multi-player which was then in development. Up to last 8 seconds are recorded and can be replayed back. An action replay also can be processed into a GIF animation. This feature was inspired by the first GIF animation uploaded by one of the community members. Greater collection of player-generated GIFs can be seen on the Artworks section of the Community Hub.
⚽️ Headers, bicycle kicks and manual passes introduced
10 June 2016 - v0.7 This update introduced important gameplay improvements. We've added headers and bicycle kicks to the game and modified the ground passes to work similarly to lob passes.
The game got more challenging too by adding manual passes (previously these were assisted). Manual passes require more precision, but also introduced more diversity in pitch situations. Kopanito got even more skill-based. The more you play, the better you are.
⚽️ Online multi-player introduced
17 August 2016 - v0.8 The big day has come. It took us a few long months to implement the online modes on an already working game (which is harder to do than doing in it from the start). You can play with other players around the world in quick match modes: Duel (1 vs 1), Doubles (2 vs 2), Chaos (3 vs 3), Complete (5 vs 5). The Create Party mode allows to customize an online match by choosing teams, stadium, decide of the match duration and invite friends to play against. Neat feature is that local friends can participate in online modes too.
⚽️ Indoor stadium
1 September 2016 The new Indoor Stadium has walls around. It means that there are no throw-ins, corner kicks and goal kicks during a match, the game is faster this way. A tournament taking place in this stadium is present in the game too. Adding this stadium to the game is a direct result of the poll organized in the game's Community Hub on Steam. Thanks everyone for voting!
⚽️ Halloween teams, improved corners, automatic passes
28 October 2016 - v0.9 4 new teams have been added to the game related to Halloween: Vampires, Zombies, Werewolves and Pumpkins. Corner kicks now allow for more options. You can make a ground pass, a lob pass or a precise shot at the goal. The automatic (assisted) passes are back in this update but along with the manual passes. Two passing systems give best result and improves depth of the game.

Kopanito has been updated to v0.9.2 with many bugfixes that appeared after the Halloween update. Some fixes have already been made 2 weeks ago (as v0.9.1), but there were no patch notes yet.

- Changed AI behavior when it's losing during a match.

Halloween goodies
You can find few new teams in the game related to Halloween: Vampires, Zombies, Werewolves and Pumpkins.
Local friends in online matches
It's now possible for your local friends to participate in an online match. Multiple controllers can be activated, like in a local match (though there is no guarantee, that you'll be in the same team with your friends). The shirts at the bottom right corner of the screen display status of connected controllers. The first, yellow shirt represents keyboard, the next one (red) is for the first gamepad and so on. Press Spacebar to enable/disable the keyboard and the Start button to toggle a gamepad (like in the team selection phase before an offline match).
You can also select multiple online modes at once when searching for a quick match.
Improved corners
Corner kicks now allow for more options. You can make a ground pass, a lob pass or a precise shot at the goal.
Automatic passes are back
Automatic pass is where a pass receiver controlled by AI traps the ball (if possible). This feature is geared towards beginners and kids. Automatic passes were present in the game few months ago, but then we decided they simplify gameplay, reduced possibilities, etc. and we introduced manual passes. Actually the current system is an improved version, not exactly the same old pass system. Automatic passes allow also to queue actions, e.g. pass the ball further or shot at the goal before the receiver traps the ball. Feel free to try this in the practice mode in the game. Manual passes are in the game as they were before, but now the pass modifier key is required to be pressed to perform a manual pass. By default it's the Shift key on a keyboard and Left Bumper on a gamepad (the same button as used for sprinting, can be reconfigured in the options). More advanced players are sprinting all the time, so they shouldn't feel a difference in passing. So, we've combined two passing systems, giving more depth to the gameplay. Note: Performing a header or bicycle kick on automatic passes isn't possible in most situations, you still need a manual lob pass for this purpose. Note 2: Trying to beat the Professional or Legend AI using only automatic passes isn't a good idea, feel warned.
A new way of grass wearing down
We've changed how the grass is wearing down in the game. Now each battle on the pitch should give a different result. Grass will become worn in the 'hottest' areas of the field.
Steam Overlay is working again on Windows
Yeah, we know, that working Steam Overlay isn't something special for other games. The base technology that we're using didn't co-operate with the Overlay in the past, but now things are improving. It also means that Steam Link should work too, but please let us know!
Other changes
- Updated the list of games on the Browse Matches screen.
- Changed how fame points are awarded for a match. Awarding fame for online matches too.
- Improved ball stealing. Now short time in the ball's vicinity is needed to steal the ball if someone is already dribbling.
- Fixed Commonwealth Cup huge bronze medal on the modes list (thanks +papa+).
- Another set of fixes regarding players being entangled in goal's net.
- Fixed few controller connection/disconnection issues (thanks a.).
- Fixed headers not being counted as shots.
- Fixed possibility of a corner kick or throw-in on the Indoor stadium.
- Allowing to change players before a starting whistle (before kick-off, corner kick, throw-in and goal kick).
- Improved avatar loading in leaderboards.
- Made match camera slightly faster.
- Fixed supershot animation's wrong timing on replays in some cases.
- Fixed too big player names on GIF replays.
- Fixed possibility of using the freeze and teleport super-moves by multiple players from the same team at once.

While we're working on a new update, our graphic designer is experimenting with Kopanito's look and feel. Improves locating the ball and your teammates during a match due to the black outlines and stronger shadows. Also it looks better moving than on a picture. Some tips regarding GIF making
- Kopanito creates rather too large GIFs for some social platforms. You can apply lossy compression on ezgif.com to greatly reduce image's weight.
- You can pause a match at any time and generate a GIF from the last 8 seconds, so not only goals can be shared!
- Generated GIF's resolution is 25% of game's resolution. You can press F11 to switch to windowed mode and make the game's window smaller, this way your GIFs will be smaller too (helps if making the animation is taking too long on your PC).

First of all, thanks for participating in our poll on the forums regarding walled pitches. We decided to make one indoor stadium for now and give it to you for playtesting. It's available in local and online matches and also we've made a whole indoor tournament. Please give us your feedback regarding this new feature.

Great news!
We're happy to announce that the big day has come: online multi-player modes are available to play in Kopanito! This took a few months of our hard work to complete. You can play with other players around the world in these modes: Duel (1 vs 1), Doubles (2 vs 2), Chaos (3 vs 3) and Complete (5 vs 5). A match will start when there are at least 2 players ready, so for the 3 vs 3 mode other players will join during play.
Create party and invite friends!
To customize a match completely, select the "Create Party" mode. It allows you to choose teams, stadium, decide of the match duration and invite friends to play against. This type of game is currently always private and invite-only.

It's not the end of online multi-player development. We're working on additional improvements and features. Below is a list of things that will be improved next:
- Better, more fluid rendering on the client-side.
- Goal replays not working yet in online matches.
- Better matchmaking, taking into account players distance (to reduce latency) and skill.
- Add support for more local controllers in online matches.
- Calculate proper fame points for all players participating in a match (currently it's broken).
- Better lobby browsing screen, allow to create public custom lobbies.
- Playing in co-op against AI.
Cups and leagues
Leagues screens has been improved (see the image below). For completing a cup or league additional fame points are awarded. We've also decided to unlock continental cups and World Cup for beginners.
Supermoves rebalanced
Supershot It can be deflected by slide tackles and standing players more easily (previously slide tackles never worked actually). Turn rate is increased when controlling the ball. Camera locked to the ball. Windmaker Windmaker can now stop the supershot, if it's timed correctly. This makes the Windmaker a little more useful. Ball-Magnet Goalkeepers can now catch the ball pulled by the Ball-Magnet most of the time. The tactic of running into an opponent's goal and activating the Ball-Magnet is now lot harder to exploit.
Other changes
- Corner kicks, throw-ins and goal kicks are all now time-limited to 5 seconds.
- Fixed the Team Kopanito achievement not unlocking (thanks Don Pedro De La Muerte).
- Player switching improved: better algorithm, allowing to change player during a slide tackle and a failed header.
- Fixed slide tackling goalkeepers.
- Better stadium thumnails in the stadium selection screen.
- Fixed players glitching during a header when the ball is caught by a goalkeeper.
- Fixed inverted choices when setting draws for a friendly match.
- Fixed conflicting global time scale related problems.
- Fixed AI not recognizing it has the ball in some cases.
- Fixed AI dribbling in rare cases when a human player is in the team.
- Fixed goalkeeper kicking in a wrong direction in some cases.
- Fixed AI making invalid ground passes in some cases.
- Updated ball textures, rotated balls slightly in thumbnails.
- Many more other minor fixes, optimizations and improvements.

Another milestone reached: Kopanito is now playable over the Internet! It's still in development, very raw and laggy, but it's playable now. If you want to test it, then you need to switch to the BETA branch on Steam (right-click on the game, select "Properties", and then the "BETAS" tab, leave the access code field empty). Currently there may not be many players online, so please invite your friends. Only 1 vs 1 match is possible right now. Other modes are in development. It's recommended to play against friends who aren't far away to reduce latency. A better lag-compensating functionality is in development. Hi again!
We're back with an update that fixes many issues from the previous update. Many bugfixes has been made, but most important stuff is described below.
Manual passes 2.0
Many of you have complained about this new feature. We are confident, that we want this feature in the game, because it gives a lot more options during gameplay, so instead of stripping it, decision has been made to improve it. Ground passes are now again on key press, not on release, so they are faster. Kick force is calculated automatically and correction has been made in detecting which teammate is the pass receiver. This greatly improves dynamics of the game. Ball still needs to be trapped manually, but it's now bigger by 20% and player's trap range has been increased by 33%, so now it should be easier to receive a pass (although some practice is still required).
Goal scored using the new first-touch shot feature and a manual pass into an opponent's penalty area
Shooting on one key
The [noparse][D][/noparse] key and (B) button are now used only for shooting (slide tackle has been moved to a different key, read below):
- Pressing it quickly with the ball performs a direct shot (always towards opponent's goal).
- Holding it with the ball enters the precise shot mode.
- Holding it while running under a falling ball performs an air shot (always towards opponent's goal).
- New! Holding it while running into an unowned ball on the ground performs a stronger direct shot (always towards opponent's goal).
Swapped controls
We had to move slide tackle to the [noparse][A] key[/noparse] and (X) button and air shot to the [noparse][D][/noparse] key and (B) button due to the above changes, to make things more consistent. To ensure that the game is playable for most of our community we've decided to reset customized controls, so the new keys can work properly. If you've customized your controls, then you'll need to do that again, very sorry! The new stuff requires getting feel of it and some practice. Please be patient and report any feeback after playing at least a little longer.
If you're one of the people giving Kopanito a negative review just because of the previous update, then consider updating that review.
Notable other changes
- Fixed no menu screen after losing a tournament.
- Human-controlled players do not lose the ball when idle.
- Improved game's behaviour regarding avatar loading when Steam is not running or it's offline (thanks udidthis).
- Better AI in a human-controlled team when playing on lower difficulty levels.
- Added AI level icon to the tournament menu screen.

Yes, we know that you want online multi-player. We've made big progress with it, but it's not ready yet, so please be patient. At the end of June or beginning of July 2016 a playable prototype should be available for testing. A new version 0.7 is now available which introduces important gameplay improvements. We've added header shots and bicycle kicks to the game and modified the ground passes to work similarly to lob passes. This makes the game even more skill-based, so we think it's good especially when online mode will land. More about this below.
Headers and bicycle kicks
You've requested air play and now it's ready to test. Players can now perform crazy headers and bicycle kicks during a match. To perform one of these air shots, hold the [noparse][A][/noparse] key or (X) button while trying to stay under a falling ball. Type of shot will be selected automatically by the game depending on position of the player relative to the ball. Shot direction is always towards opponent's goal, like in regular direct shots. Note: this feature is new and may require some rebalancing, so please report any issues or doubts on the forum.
Manual passes
Now ground passes work exactly like lob passes. The longer you hold the [noparse][S][/noparse] key or (A) button the stronger the pass. Kick direction is taken from the [noparse][▲►▼◄][/noparse] keys or (LS). Oh, and you need to receive a pass "manually", as pass receiver won't automatically run towards the ball. This change makes the game a little more challenging, requires more precision, but also introduces more diversity in pitch situations. Kopanito is now even more skill-based. The more you play, the better you are. Hopefully this will make online multi-player more fun. Note: this feature is new and may require some rebalancing, so please report any issues or doubts on the forum.

Hi all!
We've cool new features for all who aren't participating in the beta. There is a lot of players who decided to stick with the older v0.5, which was faster and more stable than v0.6 for some time. Until now, as we've decided to push this new version to all players. The game should run very fast, actually smoother than ever. If your monitor has high refresh rate, then the game will render at this rate. Please report if it's not on the Kopanito's forum. If you're participating in beta, then the latest changes are listed at the end of this news.
Freeze super-move
This is the fifth super-move in the game. It allows you to freeze players in radius (except goalkeepers) around the current controlled player. The longer you hold the super-move button (E key or LT button), the bigger is the radius of freezing. Note that you may also freeze your teammates too. Frozen players wont participate in the game for some time (depending how close they were to the freezing player). This super-move can be used both offensively and defensively. You can freeze opponent's defenders to make it easier to score a goal for example. The ball can also be frozen or, actually stopped, even in mid-air. It's a good method to cancel opponent's shots, including super-shot. Try it for yourself :) You can also slide tackle a frozen player to defrost him faster.
Action replays
They activate automatically after goals, but can be started manually from the pause menu. It's a side-product of online multi-player, where game state recording is needed. Since we're recording a match, we though it would be great to able to replay it. Up to last 8 seconds are recorded and can be replayed back. Note that replays aren't exact, pixel-perfect recreation of a given situation, but rather a very close approximation. This means that sometimes things may be broken during a replay (we'll fix this in future).
GIF generator
This feature allows you to create a GIF animation from an action replay. This was inspired by the first GIF animation uploaded by FUDO. We think it will be great feature to share all cool and funny stuff you do during a match. Note: This feature is very experimental. It's good, but not perfect. GIF generation takes up to a few minutes to complete, so please stay patient. Generated animations are currently heavy (5-8 MB) and not so smooth. This will be improved in future assuming players' interest. We encourage you to share your GIFs here on the Artworks section of the Community Hub or anywhere else you like around the web. Example GIF animations:
Legend AI
This fourth difficulty level was previously hidden. We've decided to show it, but leave locked. Unlock condition is visible when starting a new cup or league.
Online multi-player
When? Possibly at the beginning of June 2016 alpha testing will start.

We've uploaded a new build to the beta branch on Steam (Windows and OS X only). The version 0.6.4 contains updated base technology on which Kopanito is build. It should be faster (at least on Windows) and there shouldn't be any performance drops during matches. We haven't tested it thoroughly, because we wanted to publish it before the weekend. Anyone is encouraged to switch to the beta branch (no password required) and post feedback on the forum. Please pay attention to these issues:
- Performance of the match engine, occasional frame rate drops.
- Audio playback, stuttering or missing sound effects.
- Missing texts in the menus (wrong translations doesn't count).
- Any new crashes.
Known issues
- No Linux build yet. We had some technical difficulties regarding the Linux build, so it's not updated and remains at v0.6.3. We'll solve this in a several days.

We've a small update for you! Our artist improved a little appearance of the stadiums available in the game. Grass is more bushy, prominient, colors have been adjusted. In the 0.6.3 (beta) branch additional fixes were made:

Since there are a lot of new players in the game due to sale, we've decided not to scare them off with an unpolished build, so we've rolled back to v0.5.1, which runs smoothly.
The performance problems in the v0.6 are not solved yet and won't be for some time, because it's a very complicated issue. Very sorry for that! To implement game state recording for goal replays we needed to turn parts of our code upside-down. These changes were needed for the online multi-player support and more such changes will be made in future. And it doesn't matter what GPU you have, this issue is unrelated to GPU performance.
The latest version 0.6.2 is still available in the BETA branch on Steam, you can switch to it freely, no access code required. Now you have a choice.

Kopanito's team is back with some cool new features in v0.6 and new yet-unseen bugs (regressions)! We've worked hard past 2 months modifying most of our rendering code towards promised online multi-player. There were a lot of necessary changes in the game's code, so it's very likely that many things got broken in the process. But we think that anyway the game is reasonably stable and all regressions will be fixed in future. Now about the new features.

Price of the game will go up by 20% on the next monday, 7 March. If you didn't buy the game yet, then now might be a good time to do so.
We know that no one likes this (unless you've already bought the game), but this was already planned since game's launch in Early Access several months ago. An excerpt from Kopanito's store page:

Kopanito has been updated to v0.5.1. This is a bugfix-only release with no new features, no online multi-player yet, no replays and no new super-moves.
Frame-rate issues
Hopefully this issue has been fixed in this build. Game is not running faster but should be a lot more smoother. We thought that we've fixed this in previous versions, but apparently we've been wrong. Please report if the game doesn't run smoothly for you or does degrade performance over time in a match. We'll be grateful for any feedback.
Match challenges and achievements
- Fixed the slide score challenge being marked as completed even when a scorer was sliding without the ball (thanks MonkeyJug).
- Fixed the supershot from penalty area challenge/achievement (thanks MonkeyJug).
- Fixed the clean slide tackles challenge/achievement (thanks PoDuHa-MaTb 3oBeT).
Other fixes
- Fixed no one celebrating when a goal was scored using the ball magnet super-move.
- Professional and Legend AI better steal the ball when an opponent is shooting using the precise shot.
- Added ability to pick stadiums and balls in custom tournaments. Added new stadium choice "team stadium" which picks stadium based on selected teams' continents.
- Slightly increased clock's font size to improve readability.

After the updates in the past few months (AI levels, leaderboards, achievements, etc.) our top priority now is online multi-player. This is a big thing for us and we'll require probably 3 months for this, details will come out in a few weeks. Game's release is planned on May 2016 with online multi-player built-in. Early Access has extended (was planned to end in December 2015), but we believe that's a good thing.
You'll be able to play online friendly matches with your friends or unknown players on Steam. Possibly mixing local and online multi-player. So for example 2 players at one PC could play against other 2 players over the Internet. Matches 5 vs 5 should be possible too. That's the plan, hopefully will be realized fully and in time. You'll be notified about any progress soon.
Note, that we'll develop other features and fixes too in this time, but these may be published less often from now on. Possible features are new super-moves, as these are relatively 'cheap' to implement and goal replays as a byproduct of online multi-player.
In the meantime you can talk about Kopanito with your friends, try local multi-player with them, maybe organize a tournament during a party. This way you'll be able to post better feedback to us and promote the game a little, which is important too.

Achievements
The Trophies screen is now available (previously disabled). On this screen you can admire cups and medals you have won and see other stuff you achieved so far. Note, that number of Steam achievements is pretty high: 225, but also note, that most of the achievements are quadruple (bronze, silver, gold and platinum). So for example winning Oceania Cup on the Legend difficulty level gives you 4 achievements (one per difficulty level). There are 70 unique achievements.
Party Mode On!
This is a perfect thing for parties with friends. Each friend controls one national team and you organize a cup for them, eg. World Cup, European Cup or Champions League. This is basic, but you can also do more crazy stuff, as there may be more than one human per team. Custom Tournament can be started in one of the three formats:
- league (round-robin) with 4-16 teams,
- knock-out stage only with 4, 8 or 16 teams,
- group stage with knock-out stage with 12-32 teams.
AI gets circled
When you control a player, there is a color circle underneath him. When you play a local multi-player match, there are other circles of other players too. Pretty obvious thing! We decided to try something not so obvious, to give AI similar circles to:
- indicate AI level by color of the circle (white = beginner, black = legend, like in karate :)),
- let you forget that you're playing with an AI and pretend that it's more human-like.
New Match Challenges
New challenges will appear in tournament matches:
- Knock-down 25 opponents in a single match.
- Score a goal from a super-shot launched from your own penalty area.
- Score a goal without losing the ball (starting with your goalkeeper or from a kick-off).
Other changes
- AI goalkeepers are now easier to beat on the Beginner and Amateur difficulty levels.
- AI teams adjusts its level when losing or winning (plays better or worse).
- Added ability to perform super-shots with your goalkeeper.
- Changed Northern's Ireland flag (thanks MonkeyJug)
- Improved AI passing and shooting. Previously AI didn't use ground passes in many cases (e.g. goal kick), now it should.
- Ball's shadow fades out when the ball is mid-air.

Match Challenges is a new feature in the game, added in v0.4, few weeks ago. These challenges activate only in tournament matches and give you additional fame points for performing some specific tasks during a match (more fame = better position in leaderboards). Some challenges are easy, some are hard and there are nearly 30 of them already and more will come in future.
Example challenges already included in the game:
- Obtain 30% slide tackle accuracy
- Dribble for at least 15 seconds without losing the ball
- Hit at least 2 opponents with a single slide tackle
- Score a goal by dribbling past the goal line with the ball
- Cancel a shot using the ball magnet

(Almost) Full list of changes:
- Reduced accuracy of Amateur AI when doing precise shots, as it was near 100% accurate
- Made the dribble distance challenge a little easier, 20 meters requirement was too hard, reduced it to 15 meters
- Fixed the clean sheet match challenge to fail after an opponent scores a goal

Skill-based gameplay
It may not look serious, but we guarantee, that it is. Kopanito's match engine is well-balanced. Use slide tackle to intercept passes or knock-down opponents (or even score a goal!). Pass the ball straight to your teammates (ground or air) or pass the ball between opponents. Score goals using chip shots or by swerving the ball using slow-motion shots. There are various set pieces, like corner kicks or throw-ins too, but no rules apart from that! Don’t forget, it is a fast-paced game - it might be funny and cartoonish, but it’s not that easy. If you play well-enough, you will be awarded with a super-move. Then you can pull the ball using a super-strong magnet (because why not) or teleport into a different spot on the field, activate a big windmaker to blow things out of your goal-line, perform a super-shot that knockout opponents down on the path of the ball and freeze your opponents with the freeze super-move. We focus on diversity. Complete 16 tournaments and leagues in different parts of the world with regional national teams. A tournament consist of a group stage and knockout stage.
