Pumpkins, pumpkins everywhere

*mischievous laugh*

We heard that something is happening in Lakeview... There's a weird man in town, maybe he has valuable things to sell? Apparently he likes pumpkins.

Will O'Wis will be in town until the 1st of December!

(Additionally, quality kits are now more easily obtainable. You're welcome.)

Special infected 2

Greetings and welcome to this news!

We're on the home stretch! Since the announcement of the Closed Beta we have been very busy on many features and didnt have the chance to post a news here for a while. But here we are again and to resume, we will continue a presentation we already began in a previous news, the one about the different types of infected! (Yes, there are more!)

The Avenger

This infected, driven by a feeling of latent anger, is undoubtedly one of the most dangerous infected if you fight it without caution. Wild by nature, it prefers to surround itself with other infected behind whom it hides. It is when a survivor kills too many infected near it that its rage makes it a real berserker. Faster, stronger and tougher, it will not be so easy to put it on the ground. Especially since too much rage will make it attack anything that moves, including other infected!

The Tracker

Among all the bestiary that wants you dead, it is the Tracker who will push your limits the most. As its name implies, this infected will track you down wherever you are once it has spotted you. Its speed exceeds by far that of other infected (as well as yours), it will be the one attacking on the front line to slow you down with painful claw blows.

These two infected join those presented during the previous news (Crawler, Screamer, Protector, Puker and Catapult). They are identified as "Special Infected".

These specimens have the particularity of adapting to the players behavior and to the threat the player represents. They improve and gain specific skills as the player's threat level rises. For example, a Protector will charge you to protect another infected that you have attacked, a Crawler will jump on you from further away and so on.

Themed Infected

To these fearsome enemies are added the "Themed Infected". More numerous, it is easy to know who they were before being infected. Firefighters, workers or scientists, wearing a prisoner's suit or an antibacterial one, they differ from normal civilians by their themed appearance. Stronger or more resistant, capable of electrocuting or poisoning, they each have their own abilities that you will need to identify in order to prepare yourself accordingly.

Of course, getting rid of one of them will allow you to pick particular items up, such as firearms on Militaries Infected or fish on an Fisher Infected! Moreover, it is possible that one of them spreads its theme like an infection, contaminating the nearest objects containers. So find out which ones might hold the resources you are interested in and look for the places where you are most likely to find them.

The Peruvian

To conclude this news, we will have a look at one of the most mysterious infected. The Peruvian, sometimes called "Adventurer", is an infected who has gone through many different places before and after its infection.

Very resistant, having survived long journeys, it will not be easy to face it alone. But when you look at all the treasures that it was able to collect and that it drops once defeated, there is no doubt that you will find comrades in arms to go after it!

And that's all for this second news about infected! We hope you liked it! See you soon for a next news and perhaps for next infected!

Lakeview Village

Hello everyone, and welcome to this news! This time, we will go more in depth about one of the most important places in the game: the Lakeview village.

18th Lakeview Lane. One of the last known bastions of humanity, located in North California, brings together those who survived the Apocalypse. The only condition to enter is to prove your immunity to the infected. If you can not justify any previous bite, you shall not pass. And surviving alone in a world filled with these merciless creatures would be a last stand for you.

It is an important place in Dead Maze in which you will return between each mission. This will be a good opportunity to prepare your next expeditions and to follow closely the evolution of the fight against the threat of the Infected.

Lakeview Management

Every community needs to have someone to make decisions and organize everything. It is Egon, creator of Lakeview who takes this primordial role. Following the mysterious disappearance of this ingenious chief, the intendant Wallace Abboth tries as much as he can to occupy all the abandoned administrative functions.

But Lakeview is not in the pay of one man. There are four factions working in unison, each with its own specialty. And it's Murphy Lane, a former combat-warred faction leader, who takes on the role of the operational chief coordinating everyone.

The village protection

From the village gates you will face the Lakeview Guards. Although they are not a faction in their own, they still have a leader: Manuel Lopez. He and his men, mercenaries for the most part, will not fail to remind you of the main rule of the village: the one about the Excessive Noise to avoid attracting more Infected. And that's probably the only thing they will do for you.

For protection on a larger scale, the Shepherds take over. Their cattle are the infected. Their main mission is to redirect hordes that would threaten the village by installing dams and sound decoys. But they also secure the most dangerous areas for the other factions so they can take action. It is with Sekou Iwume, the leader of these impetuous risk-all, that you will be able to acquire additional weapons.

Resource recovery

Most people who join Lakeview, and want to be helpful, choose to follow Henry Collins. The members of his faction, the Scavengers, are responsible for raking the areas in search of everything that is exploitable: food, weapons, materials. You will necessarily have to deal with him, at least until you prove your worth. In addition, he may also provide you with food at a cost.

The scouting

Before any outside operation, it is necessary to identify the areas that are interesting to search and those that are too dangerous. This task is fulfilled by the Scouts of Mei Lee. The members of this faction, elitist and very closed, have their eyes and ears constantly on the lookout and know everything about their environment. It is with the leader of this over-equipped faction that you will be able to buy additional skills.

The Lakeview Survival

But all these maneuvers are not without danger, and survivors sometimes find themselves injured or even trapped on the ground. Lynn Durand’s Saviors are the ones who will come to the village and take care of you until you are ready to go back to work. It is also Lynn, based in her infirmary, who will sell you various buildings for your camp.

It would be unwise to rely on one single source of food. This is why,
concurrently with Scavengers’ work, Lakeview has its own agriculture in which the pure water of the lake plays an important role. Vegetables, cereals and other farm products therefore constitute part of the food supplementing those brought from outside.

Adventures and Expeditions: an operations base

Finally, Lakeview will also serve as a base from which you can start more difficult missions. The Adventures and Expeditions will send you and your friends to new areas to perform way more difficult special quests. You can undertake one of them via the operating table located next to Murphy Lane. As a result of these operations you will be rewarded with the necessary currencies to buy what you need from the faction leaders.

See you soon for the next news!

In-game outfits!

Hello and welcome to our weekly news! Today, we will quickly review some of the many possibilities you will have when it comes to the most important… customization!

Starter kit

These are the most basic outfits you can find, in fact those are the three starting looks you can choose from! They’re pretty polyvalent, allowing you to cover all of the beginning of the game efficiently, but don’t worry, you will quickly find more specialized clothes to suit your taste.

Stay classy

If fancy is more your thing, even in the context of a zombie apocalypse, fear not, for you will have many options left. Who said you can’t kill zombies with class?

Medic!

If you want to identify clearly as the healer of your group, you will be able to choose amongst many different clothes to do so. They come with various bonuses to help you help your team, from plan healing buff to removing poison or other afflictions.

Let’s get down to business

You can also find full sets of various jobs, such as farmer, electrician, cashier, firefighter or police officer. Each of them come with a little perk, surely that firefighter costume will come in handy to protect you from fire damage!

Sir, yes sir

Of course, one of the most efficient category of clothes would be the military, and you will find aplenty. Defense or Attack boosts, and a definitively badass look.

Gotta have fun

Last but not least, you will be able to find a ton of casual clothes, or even… strip yourself completely! We’ve heard there are some pretty hot zones in the East, surely a bathing suit would be more fit for that?

Stay tuned for more sneak peeks about the content, we’re preparing something very special!

Weapons!

Hello and welcome to the sixth Dead Maze weekly news!

After last weeks' brief overview of the characters, environnements and foes, let's see some of the tools you will have to smash infecteds to pieces. Well yes, you didn't think you would do the dirty work bare-handed, did you? Take heart, here's a tiny sample of the available weapons:

The kitchen knife, although basic and mundane, is the go-to weapon for any survivor worth a dime. While not a war-weapon per-say, it's still a sharp knife that can work wonders to gut your opponents while still being widely available in households and the like. If you happen to be in dire need for a weapon, search for those, they will carry you through tough times. Its damages are decent and its special combo boosts your attack speed to unleash a flurry of assaults. Be quick and deadly.

Take advantage of the mannequin's leg special combo to boost your movement speed and dart through packs of foes or simply use it to retreat and reposition. In Dead Maze you can fight with every kind of items! Don't be surprised if while looting a trash bin you find some reaaaaalllly random stuff. The Apocalypse was the end of civilization, but certainly not of irony, and boy, are some of these weapons plain weird!

While looting a well deserved chest, you might be the lucky finder of one of the most wanted weapon of the game: the one and only Katana. Master its special combo to unleash a deadly barrage of attacks over a very short span! You always dreamed to be an Infected-slashing Samuraï? Now is your time!

When you're looting houses, there should be toilets. And what's to be find in there? Scrubs of all types and sizes! Toothbrush? Check. Hairbrush? Check. Mop? Check. Plunger? Check. Now that you know you can kill an infected by shoving a plunger in its face, you surely have that irrational urge to do just that, right? Don't worry, we feel the same. But don't underestimate these weapons either: brushing their teeth for example will inflict them poison damage, it's not just for show!

Every survivor has to take risks to achieve anything. Dead Maze rewards the daredevil that sleeps within you. Add a pinch of luck, and you could very well stumble across a legendary item! These rare weapons cannot be crafted, but compensate with great durability. Legendary items are much more powerful, unique and named versions of already existing items. Let's take "Babe Ruth's winning bat" for example, Babe Ruth is acknowledged as the best baseball player of all times, and it seems that you might just have found a bat that belonged to him. Wonder if you can project infecteds as far as he would have? Only one way to find out: go out there, and have fun!

Who has never dreamed of smashing household appliances on infecteds? TV screens, microwave ovens, or mere toasters can prove useful in the right hands! The aforementioned toaster can be a real mvp with the right set up: it inflicts electrical damage so you can electrify your foes, pushing as far as stunning them if they were already wet, and if that's not enough? Its special combo can set them on fire! Unleash elemental fury from your trusted toaster!

There you go, that's all for this weapon overview! In an upcoming news, we'll talk more about the weapons that grant a new skill to the wearer whenever equipped!

See you next news!

Special infected

Hello and welcome to our 5th weekly news! We manage to keep up the pace, who would have thought?

Today we are going to tell you a bit more about the different kind of infected you will encounter through the world of Dead Maze. Not all of them are brain-hungry, slow, dumb machines, you'll see!

The Crawler

This half creature looks slow and quite harmless, but don't underestimate it. If you wander too closely, it will surely cross the remaining distance with a surprising leap, and grip so tightly to your leg that you will be heavily restrained. And if more than one of those attack you? You will be completely stuck where you are, and an easy prey for the remaining infected, just waiting for the perfect opportunity to gnaw on your tender flesh.
Better avoid those crawling creeps, or kill them quickly, because they can be quite a shameful way to die.

The Puker

This is a huge, disgusting pile of blood and vomit, just waiting for the perfect opportunity to spit its guts all over your precious self.
You will be warned of this vile attempt through a circle that you will have to avoid, because once you get vomited upon, you are quite in danger: you will receive more damage each attack, your speed will be considerably slowed down, and last but not least, your stench will attract more infected through a quite large area. Keep that bile at bay!

The Screamer

That one is a nasty bit. It is not very hard to kill, but only if you manage to catch this evasive little bugger.
It will try its best to hide among a horde of infected, or run away from potential threats as fast as possible, but if you leave it alone for too long, it will start screaming (making quite a ruckus), and attract many more of its friends to help. You don't want to let it scream for too long, or you will have a lot to deal with afterwards.

The Protector

This former police officer is quite zealous, and will protect its fellow infected friends in a wide range of action. If you spot one in the middle of a horde, make sure you take it down first, because all the damage on its immediate friends will be greatly reduced as long as it stands.
It's quite slow to move, but be careful, it's said to be able to charge in a very aggressive manner occasionally.

The Catapult

This beefy monster looks dangerous, but surprisingly, it will prefer attacking from afar. And what better projectile than... another infected?
The Catapult likes to hide among hordes, and will gladly grab an infected by the neck to throw it your way, preferably behind your back when you're not looking. Such a cowardly creep.

There are many other special infected, but we will cover them in another news!

Environments

Welcome to our weekly news! Time for us to inspect our surrounding environment, Dead Maze's maps are vast and each of them offer a greatly different experience. Let's roll!

A contemporary universe

We want to allow you to travel through familiar scenes : those iconic places were once familliar and benign before the apocalypse. But since the fall, urban areas have been abandonned or ravaged to the point where everything is to be re-explored.

But Dead Maze is not limited to civilized environnements, we designed wilder and even deadlier environments, where unprepared survivors might perish due to environnemental effects.

Infecteds are not the only ones that bite... the cold does too!

And the heat won't be an ally either. Will you survive the searing desert?

Maps uniqueness

As you have already guessed, different territories mean different climates, stories, loots, and a lot of adaptation, which is the key of Dead Maze: to make-do with what's around you. That's survival 101.

Given the maps to explore are huge, the more you stray away from the safe-ish areas represented by campfires, the more you will encounter increasingly dangerous atmospheres and secrets.

The secrets

During your exploration, you might come accross deadends that have something odd to them.
Periodically, those will turn into passages that will temporary open, giving access to an extremely dangerous area.

But victory will be sweet: if you manage to handle the hordes of foes, unique rewards will await you by the end of the secret passage.

Shelter

To protect themselves, survivors can gather around campfires to eat, drink, rest, or exchange weapons or other items. Each map begins with one of those campfires, where you carefully park your bike before going on your exploration.

While you explore, you might stumble upon structures that will allow you to gather with your friends.
This fire works just as permanent campfires: you can rest and eat, but you will first have to fuel that fire.

If you feel safe enough, and you're really hungry, a small fire like this can come in handy. But warn your teammates: they will only have a very limited amount of time to join you, otherwise it will cost a lot to light that fire again.

Numerous other environments will be available in the game, but let's keep a bit of surprise for the launch!

Narration and key protagonists

Welcome to this second news on Dead Maze’s development! Put on your glasses because today we will introduce some background lore, the main storyline, and a couple of our main characters!

Ready for the deep dive? Let’s go!

The dusk of civilization

Six months ago, a gigantic earthquake located on the mid-Atlantic ridge started a chain of events that would destroy the foundations of civilization. This earthquake partially collapsed over eight thousand kilometers of abyssal plains while deploying an energy equivalent to five thousand megatons of TNT through seismic waves. As of now, what could have triggered such a massive disaster remains a mystery.

Spreading to the ocean, the energy created a two hundred meters tall Tsunami which crashed upon the coasts less than an hour later. USA’s East coast, Rio, Lisbon, Dakar, and many more were all instantly wiped out as the wave penetrated up to sixty kilometers into the lands. The people were caught off-guard and had no chance to flee the tides, creating a death toll counted in hundred of millions.

As horrifying as it gets, this was merely the beginning. Something was brought from the abysses to the shores: A poisonous substance turning human beings into mindless and savage infecteds. The bio-hazard quickly spread from host to host as the countries were still mourning the Tsunami’s death toll.

Governments’ containment plans arrived too late and ultimately failed. Within a month after the first wave hit, all hints of civilization and organized responses were rumored to be gone on a worldwide scale. Infecteds were everywhere, effectively annihilating hopes for shelters and safe havens. Only a small amount of the population happened to be innately immune to the turning for reasons yet unknown. But most of those died as well, hunted down by infected hosts. Few months after civilization came to a brutal stop, most of humanity has been wiped out. Most, but not all of it.

The Phenomenon

The story mostly takes place in California where the last known pocket of survivors tries to make a stand in a settlement named Lakeview. They managed to stabilize even through these dark times thanks to incredible sacrifices, cunning, and bravery.

With the player’s help, they will soon realize that something slow but deadly is looming over them, something you cannot escape, fight or wait-out. What they will soon name the “phenomenon” is approaching California, and by the time they realize what this is, it might already be too late.

The main storyline will be supported by short 2D cinematics and a host of carefully crafted characters teaming together to survive. Here’s a sneak peek of some of them:

Chloe Thorn

The fiery Chloe has quite a temper, speaks her mind without filter and acts on instinct. She can be harsh, rude, and falling on her wrong side is poorly advised. However behind the roughness, she hides values of bravery and kindness that she tries to uphold through the apocalypse. A relentless warrior if there is to be one. Since she lost her family and friends, she is haunted by the fear of ending up all alone, but every brave soul has torments of its own.

Jared Crane

He could have been a real hero. He is a capable fighter, a former engineer from the military, has a kind heart and an IQ almost unparalleled among his peers. He had all the key features needed to be the ideal survivor, and a leader for his people. But his mind was crushed when he lost his daughter during the apocalypse.

Ever since his psyché split, he has developed schizophrenic patterns, with notably a dark call to hurt others. So far, he never did, but the call is still there. To avoid problems, he actively makes sure never to be in the position to answer it. But given his unique capabilities, he will have to get out of his comfort zone and risk turning into a monster if he is to prove useful.

Karen Jade

Karen Jade, mostly known as “Madame Jade”, is the ruthless leader of an opportunist organization feeding off despair to make advantageous trades and bargains. Her men wear body armors and automatic weapons, far from being mere survivors, they are mostly composed of lazy former paramilitary and mercenaries.

Karen is kind of an oddball, who in their right mind would wear a cocktail dress and high heels during the apocalypse? She would. “Before” she could have never have afforded those fantasies, now that these vanity items are worthless she couldn’t help but indulge in what she often dreamed about. The thing is, of course she cannot defend herself, but she doesn’t have to: her men do the dirty work. She has the power to make her fantasies come true, and mocking her for her strange habits would be a fatal mistake.

She is not an antagonist per se, nor is she an ally. She’s somewhere in between, in that grey area that harbors the opportunists of her kind.

Survival system

Welcome to our third weekly update! Today we will go deeper into the survival mechanisms of the game, detailing exactly how you will have to deal with hunger, thirst and fatigue.

Choose wisely

Contrary to most survivals where your gauges go down over time, we decided they should rather depend on the actions you choose to perform. This both gives you more time to discuss with your teammates about elaborate strategies, and it lets you have the control over your gauges a lot more.

So, how do they go down exactly? Each time you open a container, you will be prompted with a window that shows how much picking an item will cost you.

In this example, the item Painkillers will cost me 12 thirst points and 12 fatigue points to pick it up. Pretty costly, but this could be very useful later.

Special containers

In some places, you will find containers that are sealed in a particular way, and need an action to reveal their content.

This safe could be opened easily, if only I had a crowbar. I don't, and I don't want to take my time to try to pick the lock carefully (there are infected around!), so I try my chance at the brute force way. Unfortunately that didn't work out for me, and now I just lost 10 fatigue points for nothing.

Fishing!

Sometimes, when exploring the world, you can see some fishing spots in areas with water ponds or lakes. They work the same as the special containers: you can easily catch some fish with a fishing rod, or you can choose to take some time and energy to craft a rudimentary spike, or you can just... try to catch them with your bare hands.

Here, I succeeded! But, spoiler alert, it doesn't always go right, and diving your unprotected hands in the water in an apocalypse context might not be the most sound choice.

Time to rest

Now that we listed the numerous ways your gauges are going down, let's cover how to get them back up.
Once you explored the world enough, you can either craft a campfire to rest by its side, or head to an existing permanent campfire, spread out all through the maps.

By clicking on it, you will sit down by the fire, and that's where you will be able to use the various items you gathered to feed yourself.

As you can see, other players can sit by the campfire, and they are able to see your thirst, hunger, fatigue and different afflictions, and choose to help you. You can help them too, if you happen to have an item they need, granting you a small XP bonus (and hopefully, a new friend!).

The longer you play without resting at a campfire, the more XP and loot you will be granted: we call that system the Threat Level. But that will be explained in another news post!

Camp System

Hello and welcome to this first news! We will try to keep you updated as regularly as possible here about the ongoing development of the game, so you have a better idea of the various features of the game.

Today, I will address a feature many of you asked about on social media and forums: the player's camp.

Come back home after a long exploration

Early in the game, you will be assigned a parcel of land with a basic shack built on it, where you can return to in between sessions of exploration. Every item you collect in the world can be recycled into basic resources, such as wood, iron or nails, which you will use to build new structures for your camp.
You can also find plans during the exploration phase, with the rarest pieces in the most dangerous places.

You can place all the furniture anywhere inside or outside your house, and it will build instantly. No pesky waiting times, promise!

Once the structures are built, you can use them to craft various items.

Visit your neighbors

Your camp is a part of a neighborhood of 8 different camps, that you can visit at any time. If you have friends in your friendlist, their camp will be displayed next to yours, so you can see their house and visit them when they're here.

There are also social activities going on at the center of the neighborhood: infrequently, some non-playing characters will appear, granting you with side quests, or selling you rare goods.

You can also just gather around the campfire, to share a meat brochette.

Make things grow

You can even build a small vegetable garden, and buildings to shelter farm animals to diversify your sources of food, but that will be detailed in another post!
