Hi everybody!
Thanks for all of the input recently on The Long Reach. Weve been working hard with the developers to try and push out as many fixes for the game as possible. Heres a changelog of some of the more notable ones:
- fixed an incorrect behaviour with 'Jack' (including doubling, falling from ceiling, invisibility)
- fixed impossibility of discovering hidden achievements
- fixed game crash after interacting with some objects
- fixed impossibility of moving after the game restart, if the player died while interacting with objects
- fixed empty dialog issue in underground facility
- fixed error with Maxwells behaviour (disappearing, invisibility, etc)
- fixed scene boundaries issue at the underground facility which led to character disappearing
- increased time of saving indicator view
- possibility of dying instantly after reloading of save is prevented
- ...and a huge amount of small bug fixes

Hi, I’m Roman Tomilin, the coder and producer of The Long Reach, the upcoming puzzle horror adventure that releases next week, 14th March. The Long Reach is a brutal 2D side-scroller set in a research facility the experiment of which has went haywire; your worst nightmares no longer haunt your dreams but prowl the institute’s corridors while you’re awake. Eventually, after the developing of the game, we wanted to showcase just some of those moments in the below video which hopefully offers some interesting insights behind the scenes of game development. https://youtu.be/FhE9RIV841s But as we also near release – only a week away! – I wanted to reflect (and share) some of the development secrets and insights about the team at Painted Black Games.
- The Long Reach started as a completely different game. It was another story, an alternative setting, and a separate character. But we realized early on in development that our small team lacked the technical resources to implement the idea. We dropped the lot and started again. We still believe the original story was pretty cool – Maybe we’ll return to it sometime.
- Initially, the game had two parts – a 2D, side-on section for quests and a top-down view for a stealth mode. We removed the latter because we were unable to link both conceptions and art styles harmoniously. Early playtests showed that the combination frustrated players rather than delight them.

- Our development team isn’t centralised; we’re spread out over the country. While this has its perks (home comforts!) we’ve had to make sure we’re in constant contact and arrange regular sessions face to face. (Who knew brainstorming works best in person?) Yeah, independent game development can present difficulties, but on the other hand, there are lots of benefits. You can always count on the support of the gaming community. Moreover, when you are an IndieDev many game conferences are open to you, so you can show your game and collect invaluable feedback at every stage of development. This has helped us shape The Long Reach for the better.
- Ukraine is cold and Roman is seldom seen outside without his trademark red beanie.

- The appearance of one of the game characters (one that you’re going to take your time with) is based on one of the development team. (Can you guess who? Watch the video closely to find out!) We don’t take ownership of ‘one’ role in the studio. We were task-oriented during development, dividing up the work as fitted best at any given stage during development. As a result, we’ve found we’re a versatile bunch.
- Our composer Ruslan is, in fact, a cat. Of course, he has his own human to serve him in his everyday routine and creative process.
- True story: the main storyline for the game was the result of a chance meeting between Roman and Evgeni at Casual Connect in Amsterdam. Written on the back of a beer mat, it managed to survive the night and was rediscovered in the morning when sobriety was regained.

Hi, folks! Roman here. I wanted to keep you up to speed with our launch plans for our firstborn - The Long Reach.
Initially, we had planned to release the game on PC only, aiming for a December release. A number of factors have been leading us to move the date to Q1 2018. During the extensive playtesting, we decided to alter the end of the game. We’ve also encountered translation issues and, finally, we’re moving onto console too. We’d like to launch everything at the same time and this means the slight delay.
We expect to be able to announce a firm release date at the start of January. Until then please accept my apologies for the delay and may I take this opportunity to wish you all the very best for the holidays and new year.
Sincerely yours,
Roman and Painted Black Games band.

Exactly two years ago, there was that chilly fall day in Dnipro when we came up with the name of the game!
The name was crystallized from the key idea of the game. "We're spinning a yarn about fiction technology that allows delivering knowledge from one head to another. So you don't need to be plugged with the wires - system finds you wherever you are. In short, it reaches you", - our producer Roman said.
Eventually, we brought our brand-new name to logo designer and artist Arvydas Brazdeikis, our remarkable friend who helped us a lot. So he took it and converted into Morse alphabet. Of course, to make it look better, we had to sacrifice factuality and drop some dots.
Finally, here are some other options for the game's name. Don't you want to take a look?:)

"Calm down. This is all normal. Well, it’s a new normal. There was a malfunction that we can’t fix yet, but with your help I can make symptoms bearable. We’re all in the same boat here and should help each other."
"I’m Shelly, a lead scientist in General Education research facility. The job title is longer, but it’s not important. Here’s what I know so far, though."
"The experience-sharing program that we were studying went haywire. Maybe it’s that black box, maybe something else. The main symptom for you is that your nightmares and dreams no longer require sleeping to manifest. These hallucinations is all your subconscious. It turns out that given enough time with it, we go insane. But we can fix that."
The Long Reach is an adventure game filled with colorful characters, puzzles, and a shock of discovery. Wait, weren't we supposed to say “joy of discovery”? That can’t be right.
The Long Reach takes place in New Hampshire, in the fictional town of Baervox. The game draws its inspiration from Lone Survivor and The Cave and all the classical adventures (except that The Long Reach is set in the present day). You don't play in a post-apocalyptic world or explore a fairy-filled fantasy world. You’re in the thick of it, just around the corner from the place where you buy your groceries.
- The Long Reach is a horror-thriller hell bent on screwing with your perception of things.
- The game misuses stunning pixel art to create gruesome and unsettling images.
- You’ll be playing as Calvin throughout the game - this is an example of the lies and deception that we have in store for you.
- You won’t be forced to figure everything out. Escape if you wish, in fact we encourage you to run for your life!
- Solve puzzles that require thinking outside the box. The box provided by our publisher was never used during the development.
- You’ll be able to talk with plenty of characters. In fact, you’ll have a chance to pitch in every five lines or so.
- A classic adventure game inventory filled with keys and weird stuff (note: no Elvish swords glowing faintly blue when evil is close in this game).
- Original atmospheric and haunting soundtrack. The composer's not right in the head, he brought weird stuff home to use in the soundtrack. We’re all concerned for his cat.
