Moduwar - The Modular RTS is a unique take on Real-Time Strategy.
Take control of a Modu - an alien creature with an ability to grow different organs, split and re-attach them, depending on your personal playstyle.
The Modu are native to the planet Arkadia - an untamed paradise. They lived on Arkadia peacefully for millenia, changing and adapting their modular bodies to accommodate their every need.
Their peaceful existence was interrupted when invaders came - two warring races, fighting in a war started in a different galaxy.
Both races enslaved the Modu, and weaponized their miraculous adaptability.
You will take the role of a Modu serving the ERE - Earth Repatriation Expedition. You will be exploited by humanity to fight their monstrous enemy.
Will you free yourself from the shackles of the ERE, or will you accept the lesser evil in a war that might determine the fate of all life in the universe?

We are excited to share our updated roadmap for 2025 with you! We want to give you visibility on the coming months, as a few things have changed. Due to some delays on a few elements, we\'re moving the next update to Q4 2025, but don\'t worry, it is still very soon! We simply need to make a few adjustments and fixes. I cant believe this day has finally come.

Right now, Im going through the full spectrum of emotions, and its hard to put into words whats in my heart but Ill try:

As a kid, I taught myself how to code and used to make little games for fun (alongside my love for music, of course).

Later on, I became a full-blown gamer, spending countless hours with strategy games like Red Alert, Dune 2, Warcraft, and StarCraft some of my all-time favorites.

Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine Id one day be part of creating something this big something real, something that people around the world can now play.

Ten years ago, Alon Tzarafi and I decided to make a small game just for fun.

We wanted to create something different not just another RTS like the classics we loved.

So we started meeting up at cafs, brainstorming, trying to think of something original. After three or four sessions, the concept for Moduwar was born and the rest is history. :)

The journey since then has been long and full of challenges, failures, and surprises.

Along the way, many amazing friends joined the ride. At one point, 14 people were working on the game and some are still with us to this day.

The more progress we made, the farther the finish line seemed, with obstacles that at times felt impossible to overcome.

In the past year, we partnered with a French publisher who helped us bring Moduwar across the finish line and now here we are.

With the Early Access release of Moduwar in just a week, we know many of you have questions about our game. This FAQ gathers the most important information to help you better understand what to expect on launch day and beyond.

What is Moduwar?


Moduwar is an adaptive organic RTS where you control an alien creature, and your body is your army. Grow new organs, split, merge, and mutate them into unique units that adapt to your needs as you fight against human and alien threats. Unveil the sci-fi world behind the Modu with a narratively led single-player campaign and different game modes, including multiplayer PVP.

What kind of RTS Moduwar is?


Moduwar is a non-traditional, adaptive RTS where your body is your army - splitting, mutating, and evolving in real time instead of building bases or training units - featuring fully modular, living structures; merge-and-split mechanics for shape-shifting warfare; deep narrative-driven gameplay, and nostalgic 90s RTS inspiration.

Is Moduwar similar to StarCraft 2?


Moduwar shares core gameplay and control styles with StarCraft 2, drawing heavy inspiration from the Zergs organic design and swarm tactics - reimagined as a fully modular, living organism that splits, mutates, and evolves in real time.

What makes Moduwar unique compared to other RTS games?


Moduwars uniqueness lies in its fully adaptable living army where your base and units are one, growing and evolving organs that function as mobile, interconnected parts. You create and reshape tailored units in real time by merging and splitting these parts, allowing dynamic strategies that adapt to challenges and fit your playstyle.

Who are the good and the bad guys?


The Modu are the protagonists, while the humans and the Chimera race are the antagonists who enslave the Modu.

Who is making the music?


Alon Kaplan, who is also the game producer and co-founder of Biohex Studios

Who is Biohex?


Biohex Studios is an indie game development studio founded by co-founders Alon Kaplan and Alon Tzarafi to bring their dream RTS, Moduwar, to life. The team spans three continents.

What inspired the games design and art direction?


We drew inspiration from classics like StarCraft, Command & Conquer, NetStorm, Spore, Lego, Grey Goo, and more. Real animals and eerie deep-sea creatures influence our art direction.

Is Moduwar a narrative-driven game?


Yes, Moduwar is narrative-driven, with its lore gradually unfolding throughout each single-player campaign level.

How far do you expect to develop the game?


Moduwar will feature at least 12 single-player campaign levels, up to 27 different organs to grow, 3 factions, and a variety of NPCs and environments. Additional game modes will include many more maps, features, and presets.

Who are the 3 factions?


Human-Modu: Captured and tamed by humans, usually small with few organs. Captain Miller raised an exceptional specimen that he believes will change the war.
Chimera-Modu: Brainwashed beasts created by the Chimera, fiercely loyal to their masters. The most advanced is rumored to be Chimera Elder Narraks pet.
Free-Modu: Wild and semi-aggressive, defending their territories fiercely. Island-sized Free-Modu sightings are increasing but remain undocumented.
Is the game going to have a custom mod?
Currently not planned, maybe in the future if there is a lot of demand for that.

What is the pacing of the game like?


Moduwars pacing is flexible - you can play fast and aggressive or slow and defensive, building one massive creature to explore or hold territory.

What can we expect from cutscenes? How are they made?


Moduwar features two types of cutscenes: live-action scenes with real actors and sets, and in-game engine cutscenes integrated directly into the gameplay levels.

What game mode will have Moduwwar?


All the game modes included in the Early Access are:
  • Single Player Campaign A four-mission campaign (around 4 hours of gameplay for seasoned RTS players).
  • Multiplayer Mode Battle it out with up to 4 players across 5 maps, with many more maps already in development for future updates.
  • Arena Mode A highly customizable mode with multiple presets that let you compete for high scores on global leaderboards.
  • Survival Mode Face endless waves of enemies with the freedom to tweak and experiment with game rules and difficulty settings.
  • Skirmish Mode Our newest addition! Take on AI opponents across 5 varied mapswith many more to come.

Can we customize these game modes?


To spice up the game modes and make them more dynamic and challenging, we added a wide range of customization options. Players can now tweak settings like resource limits, tech levels, the number and direction of enemy attack paths (including randomized patterns), and whether or not you can build between waves in Survival Mode.
On top of that, you can select a specific preset combining all these options and compete on its dedicated Steam leaderboard, going head-to-head with other players who took on the same challenge.

Will there be co-op in the campaign? And how many are you gonna be able to play in multiplayer skirmish?


Co-op is not planned for the campaign, but regular co-op (multiplayer combined with skirmish) is planned for a future Early Access patch. The current player limit is 4, with a chance for more - no promises, but we might surprise you!

Are there accessibility options?(colorblind modes etc.)


Accessibility options, such as colorblind modes, are not available at the moment, but we understand their importance and may consider adding them in the future.

Are all resolutions supported?


Weve added full support for all screen resolutions, ensuring Moduwar looks sharp, clean, and properly scaled no matter what setup you're playing onfrom ultrawide monitors to compact laptop screens.

Is there voice acting? If yes, in what languages?


Yes, in English with subtitles in all supported languages.

Will there be a public roadmap after the release?


Yes, a public roadmap is planned and will be shared later on.

What kind of future content is planned?


Among the things that are planned, we can tease some more stuff:
  • More Skirmish and Multiplayer maps
  • Coop Skirmish and Multiplayer mode
  • 2-3 different environments added

Campaign Deep Dive

In the single-player campaign, we already had three levels in a relatively polished state, but recently, we wrapped up work on Level 3, which weve been pouring a lot of effort into.
This level marks a major turning point: it's the first time players will encounter the enemy spaceships of Moduwars main antagoniststhe ruthless Chimera.

Level 3 also introduces two brand-new creatures:
  • Mogar a fearsome boss thats as terrifying as it is powerful.
  • The Spitter - a mysterious new monster that still doesnt have an official namebecause the Reddit post we shared asking for name ideas absolutely blew up! With so many amazing suggestions, were still narrowing it down.

This level also contains hidden clues about the history of the humans who once explored the planetuncovering fragments of their past missions and intentions.
You'll also get your first glimpse into the mysterious Free Modu, a unique faction whose story will unfold further as you progress through the game.

Live Action Cutscenes

Another major thing were working on right now is the production of live-action cutscenescomplete with actors, extras, and an absolutely wild spaceship bridge set. For us, this is a dream come true. Its our tribute to the classic RTS games we grew up loving, the ones that inspired us to make Moduwar in the first place. These cutscenes will tell the overarching story of Moduwar and finally give players a glimpse into the world weve been imagining and building for years.

Weve made major improvements to the merging system, making it far more intuitive and user-friendly. One big upgrade: youll now see visual arrows indicating exactly where the merge will happenso no more guessing or misplacing your units mid-battle.

Introducing Large Organs!


Last year, we introduced a powerful new mechanic: the ability to combine three turrets into one massive Turret Organ. Now, weve expanded that idea across the entire game. Every organ in Moduwar can now be combined into a large organsome are simply stronger versions of their original form, while others unlock special abilities that can dramatically shift the course of battle.
Discovering what each one does is part of the fun... if you can manage to build them.

One Last ThingLocalization

Just yesterday, we sent the entire game's text off for localization, and Moduwar will soon be available in 68 additional languages alongside English. This is a big milestone for uswe're excited to bring the world of Modu to even more players around the globe!

We will also be part of the Earth Appreciation Day Festival from April 1st to 8th! The event is about celebrating the beauty of our green planet, and the marvelous diversity of life as we see it and as we imagine it through games.

While Moduwar isn't exactly on Earth, biodiversity is key in the game. Moduwar is set in the rich and dangerous world of Arkadia, and immerses you in an alien ecosystem filled with awe-inspiring and terrifying creatures. However, Arkadia is under siegetwo invading forces, the technologically advanced Humans and the ruthless Chimera, have enslaved the native Modu, turning them into living weapons of war. You play as Modu and try to fight back!
