After developing and releasing 3 Murder Is Game Over titles in 2 years, Ive had some time to pause and reflect on what I like most about each one. These are my thoughts on the series as a whole. Best exploration Murder Is Game Over My initial concept for this game was to have a murder mystery that emphasized exploration much more inspired by RPGs than adventure games. In hindsight, the world design from the first game was well done in terms of giving the player freedom to move around the world at their choosing. The map shape is based on a series of interconnecting circles including the castle's ground floor, connecting the second floor and the sealed wing, and finally, a secret passage connecting the castle to the surrounding countryside. The method of murder also relies heavily on the way the map makes a seemingly inaccessible area easy to reach through a clever shortcut. Not only is the exploration mechanic effective for the player, but it also serves as part of the storytelling and narrative.

With Murder Is Game Over: Streaming Death I wanted to introduce the idea of being chased around by a ghost like in Scooby-Doo. In the second half of that game, Elias Abel (actually the killer in disguise) randomly appears while exploring and moves toward the player. The easy difficulty mode is very straightforward. The hard difficulty mode also randomizes the time before the ghost appears so that its much more unexpected. The world map is designed to provide lots of opportunities for being chased, and lots of space to maneuver around an aggressive ghost.
With Murder Is Game Over: Deal Killer instead of going big, the concept was to go small spaces. I wanted the player to get the feeling of claustrophobia and being stuck in a small hotel with nowhere to go. Theres little room for a ghostly crook to hide or sneak around. So this concept got me thinking about what other mechanics I could use for a hero or villain to trick people. Thats how I came up with the new costume mechanic for this new game in the series. Just because theres no space to hide doesnt mean there arent other ways that a person can be deceptive. Partway through the game, our detectives discover a trove of costumes that Guy can wear as a disguise. The disguises will prompt instances of mistaken identity and different (sometimes extremely silly) reactions from suspects. The costume theme might also play an essential part in how the crime was committed, and how the detective solves the case.

Jumphobia: Homeward Bound is a game built around the premise of getting from "A" to "B" by jumping - but not when you want to! All Jump-bots are built with a failsafe to limit their maneuverability, meaning that you as the player can only automatically jump when you reach the edge of a drop or platform. That's right - it's a platforming game without a jump button!
Artist statement: The concept for the original Jumphobia game was to try and see if a platform could still be fun without a jump button. Its the most important element to almost every platformer - so what would happen if it isnt there? The result was a game where you have to think about everything differently. The difficulty no longer comes from pressing jump at the right time in order to clear the gap, its now a question of which gap is the right one to clear - or how can I make it past this obstacle without the freedom to jump whenever I want? The original game was built for a large variety of platforms including the web, so simple graphics and small file size were a necessity. With this new game, we want to really up the quality and push the concept to its limits, with a much higher level count, new lighting systems and 3D graphics, and a fully-fledged story with 3D cutscenes. I started making games as a 13-year-old working from my bedroom, a year later I released my first popular web game Duck Life and created Wix Games the year after in 2010. Since then weve had a number of hits and grown to a full-time team of 3.

Welcome! Today we want to talk about how we have selected the art style of Hirilun. We want to make a kind of dark style, with a comic feel. So we decided to use an outline for everything, that way we have the feel of a comic, and also is very clear to see a limit of an element. Very useful on a first-person platformer. And to emphasize the important aspects of the game, like collectibles. We make it all black and white, and it makes the feel dark and useful also to see what is important to the game and attract the attention of the player.
Plaza was the first level we made, and it has changed a lot over time. At first, it was much simpler, and it was designed with the idea that it needed to be easy to keep playing even if you fell. We also wanted different paths so you could choose if you preferred to take the upper way through windows and roofs, or the lower one through benches and terraces. The most remarkable changes were visual: Plaza became a more polished and imposing level, and it now gives the feeling of a dark city. You can feel it just by looking at it.
When we start to think about what skills we will add, we had one thing in mind: we wanted that the skills have some synergy together. The main idea behind the skills was to open new paths using them, so you had to think and see if a path is possible or not. The most powerful skill is the dash, that skill opens up a lot of paths, but, when is combined with sprint and glide it becomes even more powerful. We thought also about other skills like using a rope, walking on the wall, or reversing the time skill. Its been really enjoyable and inspirational to watch players stream Paladin Dream. It feels like playing God and watching people explore the world I created, and I also get to see which parts are celebrated, and where the game could be better or less confusing. Ive gotten lots of positive feedback about the story, and I wanted to focus this update on showing more information about the world.
The demon worshiping cult is malicious, reclusive, and possesses black magic to keep outsiders away. I wanted to show the extent to which theyve gone to protect their temple (which was crudely dug out of a city wall). In the update, Josiah explores an MC Escher-like looping room and a hallucination that projects his fear. This dungeon is intended to be full of creepy traps. The fortune-teller in Nazarfang encounter is also expanded a bit, to give the player some early insight into the 3 different religions and how they interact.
The northern wilderness is an area that is mostly not settled, and wild animals have free reign. Organized religion does not have much influence here. I created a new encounter where Josiah spars with another adventurer and their wild animal companion. Theres also a new battle with Josiahs Reflection (think Links Shadow in Zelda games) that requires a bit of logic to win. To ease a side quest that involves a decent amount of backtracking, and I added a way for Josiah to jump down the mountain with a certain item. Making it to the top of Starcross Peak requires Josiah to leave civilization behind and examine his beliefs from a different perspective. I fixed some minor bugs including dialog, art, and game balance. When you reach a new level, there is also a new common event that fires to tell the player to check and see if theyve learned a new spell. Hopefully, this will lead to players realizing there are multiple ways to manage their resources. Its great to get feedback and continue expanding the game. Can you hear the trumpets and the stomping of horses? It seems we are approaching the royal castle! This location is an important link in Jacob's journey to other places. And, as you can see for yourself - from here we have a way to the kitchen, to the servants' room, to the king's castle, and to the prison (and who knows which location we will find ourselves in next time!).
Here, for the first time, we meet the inhabitants of the castle - a bored and resting servant, a castle keeper, and a guard patrolling the wall. At the moment, this location, like the previous "Castle Gates", is being added with minimal functionality. The plan is to add all the planned content first, and only then polish the game and fill it with all the dialogue, adventure, and puzzles you need. Sorry for the slow development speed - the artist and I are doing our best to release the game as soon as possible. And, although after the main work we only have evenings and weekends to work on the project, we will slowly but surely bring it to a happy end.
