What Never Was Chapter II Teaser Trailer

I'm happy to present the steam-page and teaser trailer for What Never Was: Chapter II! While development is moving forward, I am still working out the core of the game by myself and hence can not confidently announce a release date until I know that I can deliver on it. Many have asked for a way to keep track of future news and releases in an easy way, and the Steam page for Chapter II will be just that! I am so, so thankful for all the people who have reviewed, reached out about and given love to What Never Was. I hope you are excited (and maybe somewhat patient still) for Chapter II, cause I know I am! :) Wishlisht What Never Was: Chapter II here. Watch the teaser trailer on Youtube. What Never Was is awarded an Epic MegaGrant

I am extremely excited to announce that What Never Was has been awarded an Epic Games MegaGrant. The Epic MegaGrant is a fund that helps developers of games and other projects using the Unreal Engine, in hopes that these projects will succeed. What this means for me, is that I will have the possibility to make What Never Was: Chapter II live up to my ideas, and hopefully also manage to complete it faster. I am extremely honored, happy and grateful to Epic Games for this, and will be sure to put it to good use. Worth clarifying is that this does not mean that What Never Was or Chapter II is an EGS exclusive.

Development of What Never Was Chapter II is very much underway. The development has been a bit slow because of a lot of work obligations and the global situation that affects us all, but I'm still steadily working on it. As I mentioned above, the MegaGrant will help me look into different solutions for speeding things up, so it is all very exciting. I've also updated www.whatneverwas.se to reflect current events. I hope you are all doing well, staying safe and taking care of each other! Acke Hallgren

Play What Never Was in Russian

Hi everyone! Many have asked about if I would ever localize What Never Was to various languages, and the truth is that I'd love to, but I din't know how to prepare for localization when making the game. Working on Chapter II and onwards, I am making sure that it will be a possibility for any future installments, but it is currently impossible for What Never Was Part I. Despite this, the fantastic people at The Bullfinch Team and Mechanics VoiceOver - have made their very own Full Russian Localization addon-file, which turns everything from text, to textures and even voice over - into fully translated Russian! They've done an amazing job, and the work they've done blends into the game seamlessly. I'd like to thank the Bullfinch Team and the Mechanics VoiceOver group for their fine work and passion! Download it below! What comes next?

Hi everyone. It's been a full month since What Never Was released publicly. First off, let me just thank each and every person of the 50.000+ people that downloaded and played What Never Was. Thanks to everyone who e-mailed me, left kind and encouraging words in reviews and to the content creators who played the game on Twitch and YouTube. Thanks to all of you for making these years of toiling and fiddling with my small dream-game an amazing experience! Also a tremendous thank you to the small band of people who helped out with the game in various ways - you guys made it shine in ways I couldn't make it shine myself. I'm simply floored by the response and the past month has been very surreal in more ways than one. So what happens now? There has been lots of questions and speculation about the length and ending of the game, and I will be as transparent as I can about this - This is not, and was never intended as a demo. This is all that has been produced so far. In my mind, this was the first level of a longer game, to which I had the broad strokes of a full story for, but one that I never thought I would get the chance to make the entirety of. The short experience that I've made has taken four+ years for me to make since I've been working on it from scratch and more or less by myself, so upon release I was more or less ready to let this go and do something else. However, seeing the reception it has gotten I can happily say that as of this week: Production of What Never Was: Chapter II (working title?) has started! I will not be making a kick-starter since I have a full time job already, but I do have a PayPal Donate link which you can use if you liked my game and have a dollar or so to spare! :) That being said, I'm still working on this thing alone, on my spare time, and have no real idea how long it will take but I do know where I want Sarah's journey to take her and approximately what is required to let it do so. My hopes are also that since I have the framework and much more know-how now than when I started, it won't take as long, but we will see. If fate or magic allows, Sarah will return, and when she does I hope you do too! Thank you so much for your support and love! Acke Hallgren www.whatneverwas.se

What Never Was - Patch #1

Hi everyone! Thank you all so much for playing What Never Was! It's been tremendous reading all of the reviews, seeing the playthroughs and hearing your thoughts and comments about the game. I've also read some things that can be better and have done my best to sort some of it out. Here's what the patch fixes:

  • The subtitles are now bigger.
  • If the subtitles have been turned off, they will now stay off.
  • The SKIP INTRO text sometimes stays after the intro.
  • Invert Y now also affects Mouse movement.
  • The music in the Main Menu is slightly lower, and also doesn't reset after completing the game.
  • The Gramophone now fades out properly in the ending, if it has been turned on.
  • Game is now Borderless when in Windowed mode.

Sometime in the late 2000s, Howard James Wright - an old but kind man - perishes. Leaving behind him many adventures, relics he's collected over the years as well as books authored, he is also leaving Sarah, his granddaughter behind.

Having to shoulder the arduous task of clearing out her grandfathers attic, she is soon to find that not everything about her grandfathers attic is what it seems.

What Never Was is a short, story-driven first-person game focused on exploration and puzzle-solving.
