May was a busy month for us at Bare Knuckle Development with a multi-platform 30% discount sale on Space Blaster in the first week. We launched the 'Space Blaster Lockdown High-Score Challenge' which saw players try and climb the leaderboard for prizes of over $90. We gave hundreds of Space Blaster copies away for good causes and charities throughout May to bring a bit of fun to people struggling in the lockdown. Now in early June we have a winner for the lockdown challenge and an update for the game.
UPDATE 1.0.6 OUT NOW!
Update 1.0.6 brings improved support for ultrawide (21:9) monitors. The game now runs correctly on these monitors in a 16:9 rectangle in the centre of the screen.
SPACE BLASTER HIGH-SCORE CHALLENGE WINNERS:
The winner of the $30 prize got an amazing score of over 3 million on the Nintendo Switch version of the game. In 2nd place, and winner of the $20 prize, is a Steam player with another awesome score of over 1.5 million. All of the top ten got prizes and the competition was a lot of fun for all and a nice distraction from lockdown.
SPACE BLASTING FOR CHARITY:
In May we donated over 300 codes for Super Mega Space Blaster Special Turbo on all platforms to Ukies Games for Carers initiative for NHS workers in the UK. We gave over 100 codes to Legion Games in support of UK veterans and we donated 40 codes to Disability Stockport, a local charity that supports disabled people. I also joined-in a few games of Call of Duty Warzone with the guys from Legion Games for their charity 24-hour gamathon which was a lot of fun. Im really proud that we supported these three great causes and Im excited to get involved in more charity work in the future.
Hope you are all well and staying safe during lockdown. If you fancy watching a Nintendo Switch player get a score of higher than 1 million here's the video:

Super Mega Space Blaster Special Turbo has received some great press and player feedback since launch. This update adds some new content and make a number of improvements & fixes based on player feedback. We've added a number of space backgrounds to the various modes in the game to give a bit more variety to the game. Players have been saying some of the text is a little difficult to read especially on 720p displays and on the Nintendo Switch in handheld mode. We've added a new font to certain pieces of text making it easier to read at lower resolutions. Players often found the ammo difficult to tell apart from the asteroid fragments due to its similar colour. All ammo is now a vibrant yellow making it much easier to differentiate from the dull grey space rocks. There was an issue in co-op where when a player re-launched, they would flash for 6 seconds but wouldn't be invincible. This has been fixed, now when you re-launch in co-op you'll be invincible for 6 seconds. Below is a more complete list of fixes and improvements in update 1.0.4. Improvements & Additions: [olist]

Super Mega Space Blaster Special Turbo blasts it's way on to Steam(Win/Lin/Mac), Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4. Bringing a mix of retro gameplay from classic games like Asteroids and Super Fantasy Zone, and modern game mechanics from space shooters like Geometry Wars and Super Stardust HD. With 5 game modes, local co-op, 15 unique space blasters, 40+ fun challenges, leaderboards, and an original 80's inspired synth-pop soundtrack by Electric Fan Death the space blaster offers a lot of 'pew pew' for your buck. The game was created by solo developer, Ste Wilson, for Bare Knuckle Development from the ground up. His months of working long hours on a coffee drip are starting to pay off as the first reviews come in and they are very positive. Check out some of the nice words from reviews below: Super Mega Space Blaster Special Turbo is simple, addictive and most importantly a blast to play. A lot of effort has gone into making this game, borrowing from classics but adding its own spin at every opportunity. There is a bucket load of content to keep you interested and the hook of just one more run will have you coming back for more. Super Mega reaffirms the notion that a budget price point doesnt have to mean corners are being cut. 8/10 Two Beard Gaming (TBG) read the review All in all, this is a super addictive little retro-inspired title that, while perfectly suited to playing in quick five or ten-minute bursts, can, if youre not careful, suck you in for hours on end with its one-more-go score chasing and achievement completing appeal it should offer most an absolute bargain. 4/5 The Switch Effect read the review Visually, its an indie treat. Its not a typical pixel art budget title but hand-drawn. For the price, its a no-brainer if youre up for a classic shooter in the mould of Asteroids. There arent any gimmicks here, just quality gameplay mechanics that will have you coming back for repeat plays an excellent title... 4/5 The Vulgar Knight read the review Super Mega Space Blaster Special is shockingly good. The style of old school space shooters has been refined and evolved here into something that both captures the joy of quick score-chasing sessions while also providing progression challenges and unlockables to further motivate the player to push forward. GREAT The Game Hoard - read the review To read more about the retro inspiration behind the game, the difficulties of creating a multi-platform game for a solo dev, or get more details about the game check out our article on the BKD website.

We are a small video game development studio based in Greater Manchester, United Kingdom. After the success of Super Mega Space Blaster Special we decided to make a massively expanded 'Turbo Edition' whilst still continuing the development of our much bigger metroidvania action-RPG The Flawless: Art's Tale. Super Mega Space Blaster Special Turbo expands on the original in every area with more game modes, more space blasters, more challenges, more music, a huge shop, and loads more.
We wanted to make a shoot 'em up (shmup) that blended modern and retro mechanics to create a nostalgic yet up-to-date shooter that gives you the 'just one more go' feeling. Now you can be the judge of this, leave a Steam review and let us know what you think. We are open to feedback and want to improve the game in any way we can. If you have any issues with the game please feel free to let us know and we'll do our best to solve the problem. We hope you enjoy the game, Happy blasting!
