Spirit Island Version 1.0 Officially Released
Optional thematic maps are now available on the New Game screen. These maps represent the canonical Spirit Island, and prioritize theme more highly than the front balanced sides: land types cluster together, wet terrains tend to be on the windward side of mountains, etc.
The Thematic Map is intended for experienced players, both because finding terrains at a glance is harder with the more realistic art style, and because some of the changes make the game more difficult: more lands per board, clustered terrains, more starting Invaders, etc.
Wondering what all the available Powers are, or what Fear cards might come up in a game? Visit the new Card Library screen to find out. It includes all of the cards in the game - Spirits and their unique Power cards, Major and Minor Power cards, Blight cards, Fear cards, Invader cards, Terror Level cards, Adversaries, and Scenarios. Remember, you can right click any card to view the full size with text and artwork!
Based on suggestions from players and designer Eric Reuss, we've updated the Quick Play feature with a couple of improvements. On Beginner experience level, it's the same as before - just one click to start a basic difficulty 0 game. On Intermediate and Advanced experience levels, when you click Quick Play you will have the opportunity to choose a specific number of Spirits (or randomize) and a more granular difficulty range (or the default range for your experience level). All randomization in Quick Play is now done by difficulty range and can include thematic maps as well.
Remember, you can change your experience level at any time from the Options screen.
We've added 18 regular achievements to the game, along with a hidden achievement for those who attune themselves with the ways of the Island. Happy hunting! Wins and losses are now tracked for each Spirit, Adversary, and Scenario. We're also keeping track of various other interesting data points. See how your progress in Spirit Island is going over time, and compare with the world!
This update includes a few other improvements and fixes:
Spirit Island is officially released, but that doesn't mean we're going to stop working on it. We'll continue to fix bugs and make other improvements. Specifically we're planning to add more user interface improvements, visual effects, strategic planning features, and more! We are planning to bring the game to mobile by the end of the year (at minimum to iPad and Android tablets). Plus, there's still bonus content unlocked by the Indiegogo project to come:
We've heard your demands, and we're considering several other major items for the future, including the Branch & Claw expansion and online multiplayer. And of course, we're all excited for the Jagged Earth expansion arriving on the tabletop this Fall! Thanks for all your support during Early Access. This is just the beginning and we look forward to the future of Spirit Island!

In the most distant reaches of the world, magic still exists, embodied by spirits of the land, of the sky, and of every natural thing. As the great powers of Europe stretch their colonial empires further and further, they will inevitably lay claim to a place where spirits still hold power - and when they do, the land itself will fight back alongside the islanders who live there.
Spirit Island is a cooperative, settler-destruction strategy game designed by R. Eric Reuss and set in an alternate-history world around A.D. 1700. Players become different spirits of the land, each with their own unique elemental powers, forced to defend their island home from colonizing Invaders spreading blight and destruction. Your spirits work with the native islanders to increase your power and drive the invading colonists from your island in this strategic area-control game.
In Spirit Island, players choose between 1-4 spirits to control. The number of spirits determines the size of the island:
Spirit Island is planned to include the following:
- 8 different Spirits, each with 4 Powers unique to that Spirit
- Over 50 distinct Major and Minor Powers which Spirits can grow into
- A modular island, made up of 4 modular Boards, for a variety of layouts
- 15 Invader cards, driving a distinctive Invader expansion system
- 15 Fear cards, showing what happens as you terrify the Invader
- 3 multi-tier Adversaries (specific Invaders) for play variety and fine-tuned challenge: England, Brandenburg-Prussia, and Sweden
- 4 optional Scenarios for even more play variety
