The deeper Spirits of vulcanism are too powerful and slow, too removed to respond to the Invaders but not so this one. An Explosive Eruption splits the sky and the island is empowered by wellsprings of elemental essence. The fifth phase of Jagged Earth content is now available with a new Spirit and Scenario.
Volcano Looming High: A Spirit of fire and earth stretching upwards to the sky, casting a long and dangerous shadow across the land. It doesnt dislike humans per se, but neither does it have much use for them, so the Dahan tend to keep away from it as much as possible. However, they sometimes end up dealing with its temper whether they want to or not
Elemental Invocation: The Spirits can call forth wellsprings of essence to empower small areas of the island, strengthening and aligning nature with a particular element. This is fortunate, for the Invaders are encroaching more strongly than before.
No additional purchase is required; you will gain access to the new content with your existing purchase of Jagged Earth.

Horizons of Spirit Island expands the hit tabletop game with more Spirits and island boards to increase replayability and improve accessibility for newer players. It features all the content from the tabletop game of the same name, designed by R. Eric Reuss. The five new Spirits are designed to be ideal for those playing a Spirit Island game for the first time, and three new island boards allow for even more island combinations!
https://store.steampowered.com/app/2419040/Spirit_Island__Horizons_of_Spirit_Island/
Horizons of Spirit Island includes:
- Spirit - Devouring Teeth Lurk Underfoot: Long ago, the being which would become this Spirit was a small, territorial Spirit of the sand-by-water. It waited patiently for small prey to approach, then frightened them towards its waiting maw; when fresh prey was scarce it would scavenge. Most such Spirits stay tiny, but this one happened to take a bite out of Ember-Eyed Behemoth..
- Spirit - Eyes Watch From the Trees: Even after centuries, the Dahan find many things about this Spirit somewhat enigmatic. It warns of danger, helps those lost or injured in the forest, and only works mischief on aggressors and the arrogant. Back in the days of the First Reckoning, its faint whispers were a source of dread, but to current generations they're a familiar and expected part of the island.
- Spirit - Fathomless Mud of the Swamp: The Island has many swampy deltas along its coasts. Some are fairly navigatable, while others are mazes of murky water, tangled trees, and land that isn't nearly so solid as it appears. This Spirit is one of these latter sorts, with a penchant for spreading - it likes getting everywhere, slowly turning solid ground into muck and mire.
- Spirit - Rising Heat of Stone and Sand: Even after centuries, this Spirit remains a bit unclear on why living things get so unhappy about fatal dessication, but the Dahan make such pleasant patterns across its sands that it's happy to forbear.
- Spirit - Sun-Bright Whirlwind: A Spirit of sun-warmed and gusting air. It spins leaves and dust into miniature cyclones, playfully snatches at small unsecured objects, and sometimes - when joyful, or upset, or full of the vigor of nature - howls across the island, bending trees and abrading the landscape with pebbles, twigs, shells, and the occasional bird nest.
- Island Boards: F, G, and H

Spirit Island on Smartphone
Spirit Island is now available on iPhone and Android phones! Now is a great time to pick up Spirit Island on mobile. It's free to download and try! And since we know someone will ask: I bought one of your games for Steam (or iOS, or Android). Do I get it for iOS (or Steam or Android)? A purchase of one of our games is good on the store where you made your purchase and does not transfer to other stores. It would be best to decide where you want to play and plan your purchase accordingly. For instance, a purchase on Steam allows you to play on Windows, Mac, and SteamOS/Linux computers signed in with your Steam account. A purchase for iOS allows you to play on any iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch linked to your Apple account. See more on our FAQ.

How can we Spirits drive the invaders back to their boats and off our island? We must grow, change, and find new paths - if we stay as we are, we shall die, and the Island with us. Bring forth the natural chaos, and let our new ways be of both Branch and Claw! We shall summon predators from the heart of the island, wilds from every patch of ground, illness from the twisting mists, and turn the hearts and minds of the invaders against one another. More Spirits answer the call, but the invaders redouble their efforts. Can you stop them in time?
New Feature: Spirit Foresight
The Invaders spread at an appalling speed, but if you focus, you can anticipate the results of their current activity. This foresight is not certain; unexpected turns of events do happen, and fear-crazed humans are difficult to predict. However, it can be useful as an indicator of what will come to pass absent chance or further intervention on your part. To access Spirit Foresight, click the new button on the right side of the screen. You can also tap the tab key to toggle Spirit Foresight on and off, or hold the tab key down to use it for a short while.
While Spirit Foresight is active, you can see an overall summary of what would happen in the next Ravage and Build steps, if they were to occur immediately. Hover over a land to view a popup of the land contents and a Ravage/Build preview for that land in particular. Click on a land to view a detailed display of all the pieces in the land, and interact with pieces for Push, Gather, Damage, movement, and other selections.
Other Fixes & Improvements
- Official errata from the game designer has been incorporated. Notably, at game setup, an extra Blight is added to the Blight card.
- Fixed a problem where duplicate Fear cards could appear in one game.
- The end game screen now properly shows the Adversary and/or Scenario cards.
- Fixed a problem where Blight was not added to the land correctly in some situations.
Have a Question?
We now have an official FAQ page for Spirit Island digital. If you have a question or feedback, check there first, as it may already be addressed.
Our menagerie of streamers bands together to defend their land from invaders in this settler-destruction game, Spirit Island. By taking up the powers of the island spirits and the help of the native Dahan, they show off the prowess of teamwork and fun.
This update features the launch of Steam Trading Cards, optimizations to improve performance and memory usage, and a few bug fixes. Plus, Spirit Island is now available on iPad and Android tablets. Try it out for free from the App Store and Google Play!

Branch & Claw Preview

Version 1.1 of Spirit Island has been released with support for the Promo Pack 1 DLC. Promo Pack 1 includes two Spirits: Heart of the Wildfire and Serpent Slumbering Beneath the Island. Each Spirit has four unique Power Cards. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1409120/Spirit_Island__Promo_Pack_1/ Many Spirits can sense the immense Serpent deep below. It is mostly asleep, and its influence on the land above is limited, but the Invaders' Blight already begins to sting it towards greater wakefulness. The Wildfire is a spirit of natural destruction... and renewal after destruction. A long-standing friend of the Dahan, it glories in their fires and sparks. It spares their villages as best it can, and fights the Invaders in large part for them. If you backed the Indiegogo campaign at Deluxe Edition or higher, a Steam key for Promo Pack 1 awaits you in your BackerKit dashboard under Digital Downloads.
Cartography
If you enjoy the look of the Thematic Map, but prefer the gameplay of the Balanced Map, you're in luck! This update adds support for an alternate terrain style for the Balanced Map so it has the visual style of the Thematic Map. Give it a try in the Options screen!
Other Improvements
This update includes a few other improvements and fixes, including:
- Improved the 3D map display when a land is crowded with pieces.
- Improved various sound effects and music.

- Fixed a problem where Blight added by Bringer of Dreams and Nightmares would not destroy Presence.
What's Next: Branch & Claw, Mobile, & More!
We're happy to announce that we have officially started development on the Branch & Claw expansion. There's no release date to share just yet, but stay tuned to our Twitch channel for previews as development progresses. We are also planning to bring Spirit Island to iOS and Android tablets (and potentially phones) by the end of the year. Two more stretch goals earned from the crowdfunding campaign remain:
- Adversarial Appearance - Adversary-specific visuals for Invader pieces
- Spirit Styles - Alternate artwork for each Spirit
Spirit Island has officially launched, and we're continuing to work on improving it! This update brings new visuals along with plenty of small features and fixes.
Alternate Thematic Map Style
The Thematic Map has great artwork, but it can be hard to tell the lands apart during a heated game. A new option allows you to use the visual style of the Balanced Map on the Thematic Map.
This update includes several more improvements and fixes:
- Encompassing Ward is changed to read: "Target Spirit provides Defend 2 in each of its lands." This means that the Defend effect is updated if Presence is moved or removed.
- Difficulty levels are shown on Adversary panels.
- Adversary level can be changed in the New Game screen by clicking the full card directly.
- The Gain a Power interface allows interacting with the game behind it, and can be moved around on the screen by dragging it.
- Added an option to disable all animations in the game.
- Spirit artwork is shown on the map in their "home land" on their starting board.
- Fixed: The game can get stuck when losing due to Sweden's Heavy Mining effect.
- Fixed: The game can progress in the background while menus and other panels are visible.
- Fixed: The Thematic Map is missing some adjacencies between boards (at the center of the island, and between oceans and lands on other boards).
- Fixed: Using Winds of Rust and Atrophy can cause the game to lag while targeting.
- Fixed: The Ritual of Terror cannot be performed twice in the same phase.
What's Next
We're breaking ground on the two promo Spirits unlocked by campaign stretch goals: Heart of the Wildfire and Serpent Slumbering Beneath the Island. If you want to be the first to see them in action, follow our Twitch channel and tune in on Tuesday evenings for Handelabra Live!
Version 1.0.2 is now available. This update fixes two serious issues:
- The game can freeze on the Loading screen on Windows 10 systems.
- Quick Play with 2 Spirits can generate an invalid thematic board layout.
With every launch comes a few inevitable bugs, and Spirit Island is no exception! Version 1.0.1 is now available with a few quick fixes:
- The tutorial will no longer skip through the first section.
- Statistics for Adversaries and Scenarios will now be recorded correctly.
- Improved the icons for the Powers Awakened and Elemental Mastery achievements (and their progress indicators in the Card Library).
- You can no longer remove a board that would cause an illegal map in the New Game screen.
- Sweden's Stage II Escalation Effect no longer allows them to explore lands they shouldn't have.
- Added missing Thematic board adjacency between Northeast Ocean and East Jungle 1.
Spirit Island has left Early Access, and version 1.0 is now available! To celebrate the launch, Spirit Island will be on 15% discount through August 5th. After that it will be at its regular price of $24.99 USD.
Thematic Map
Optional thematic maps are now available on the New Game screen. These maps represent the canonical Spirit Island, and prioritize theme more highly than the front balanced sides: land types cluster together, wet terrains tend to be on the windward side of mountains, etc.
The Thematic Map is intended for experienced players, both because finding terrains at a glance is harder with the more realistic art style, and because some of the changes make the game more difficult: more lands per board, clustered terrains, more starting Invaders, etc.
Card Library
Wondering what all the available Powers are, or what Fear cards might come up in a game? Visit the new Card Library screen to find out. It includes all of the cards in the game - Spirits and their unique Power cards, Major and Minor Power cards, Blight cards, Fear cards, Invader cards, Terror Level cards, Adversaries, and Scenarios. Remember, you can right click any card to view the full size with text and artwork!
Quick Play Improvements
Based on suggestions from players and designer Eric Reuss, we've updated the Quick Play feature with a couple of improvements. On Beginner experience level, it's the same as before - just one click to start a basic difficulty 0 game. On Intermediate and Advanced experience levels, when you click Quick Play you will have the opportunity to choose a specific number of Spirits (or randomize) and a more granular difficulty range (or the default range for your experience level). All randomization in Quick Play is now done by difficulty range and can include thematic maps as well.
Remember, you can change your experience level at any time from the Options screen.
Achievements & Statistics
We've added 18 regular achievements to the game, along with a hidden achievement for those who attune themselves with the ways of the Island. Happy hunting! Wins and losses are now tracked for each Spirit, Adversary, and Scenario. We're also keeping track of various other interesting data points. See how your progress in Spirit Island is going over time, and compare with the world!
Other Improvements
This update includes a few other improvements and fixes:
- Optimized graphics and code to reduce the size of the game and make it run more smoothly.
- You may now view the contents of the Major and Minor Power decks and discard piles at any time.
- Improved navigation on the How to Play screen.
- Fixed: Using Lightning's Boon on Lightning as the last available power can incorrectly continue on to the Invader phase instead of letting you use more powers.
- Fixed: Unplaying a card with negative cost during the Blitz scenario could not cost energy if you had 0 energy.
- Fixed: Not auto-passing to the next state in certain situations during Rituals of Terror.
- Fixed: Setup for some spirits that must make a decision at the start of game not occurring.
- Fixed: Not properly handling use of powers that have changed hands mid-turn.
- Fixed: Military Response in the Dahan Insurrection scenario not allowing the player to choose a land for each invader when a choice is necessary.
- Fixed: Vengeance of the Dead timing issue when triggered by Ravage.
- Fixed: Blitz scenario allowing the player to undo after seeing the initial Explore.
- Fixed: Tidal Boon and Mantle of Dread asking for a land choice when there were no viable lands to select.
What's Next
Spirit Island is officially released, but that doesn't mean we're going to stop working on it. We'll continue to fix bugs and make other improvements. Specifically we're planning to add more user interface improvements, visual effects, strategic planning features, and more! We are planning to bring the game to mobile by the end of the year (at minimum to iPad and Android tablets). Plus, there's still bonus content unlocked by the Indiegogo project to come:
- Promo Spirits: Serpent Slumbering Beneath the Island & Heart of the Wildfire
- Adversary-specific Invader appearance
- Alternate terrain artwork
- Alternate Spirit artwork
The Mysterious Future
We've heard your demands, and we're considering several other major items for the future, including the Branch & Claw expansion and online multiplayer. And of course, we're all excited for the Jagged Earth expansion arriving on the tabletop this Fall! Thanks for all your support during Early Access. This is just the beginning and we look forward to the future of Spirit Island!
The English invasion is at hand in the second major update of the Early Access period. Read on for all the details!
The Kingdom of England
The final Adversary of the core game is now available!
Here is what the Kingdom of England is all about:
- Buildings, buildings, and more buildings - England sends so many immigrants that the colonies spill over into unexplored lands. It doesnt start out fast, but constantly pushes its borders forward. They will push hard to found a capital during Stage II.
- England is notably easier for Spirits good at wrecking Towns (e.g. Lightnings Swift Strike).
- This Adversary is notably harder for Spirits which rely on moving/killing Explorers to prevent Invader Builds (e.g. Shadows Flicker Like Flame).
Spirit Focus
With multiple Spirits in one game, there can be a lot going on. So much so that it can be hard to even see the Island!
Now with Spirit Focus mode, you can zoom in on what a single Spirit is doing at a time, with the other Spirits still just a click away.
Spirit Focus mode is the default when you are playing a single Spirit, and is always available with any number of Spirits by clicking the +/- buttons in the corners of the screen.
Nexus of Sound Complete
Our in-house maestro Jean-Marc has now created dynamic musical elements for all of the remaining Spirits in the core game: Bringer of Dreams and Nightmares, Ocean's Hungry Grasp, A Spread of Rampant Green, Shadows Flicker Like Flame, and Thunderspeaker. These musical elements will come and go as Spirits take actions in the game. The music will continue to evolve as we improve the game, but we hope you enjoy the complete musical landscape thus far!
Other Improvements
This update includes a host of other bug fixes and improvements. Here's a list of a few notable ones: Interactions:
- If you click to hide hints, they will stay hidden until you unhide them.
- Highlights on power cards are hidden when dragging a power.
- When new elements become available during a power resolution, they can be used for the power's threshold.
- You can choose the order of destroying Presence from the Blight card (since it may matter with Ocean).
- Display of increased health on pieces from effects such as Infinite Vitality or England.
- The Adversary level number (if any) is shown in the corner of its icon during the game.
- Downward Spiral's effect does not let you select more than one Spirit's presence in the same land.
- Repeating Land Thrashes in Furious Pain does not respect the land targeting restrictions of the card.
- Current energy displayed can be incorrect when playing/unplaying cards quickly.
- Infinite Vitality and Call of the Dahan Ways do not interact correctly.

- Sweden can show an incorrect message about adding extra blight when Infinite Vitality is in effect.
- Seek Safety (Terror Level 3) can incorrectly destroy damaged Invaders in certain cases.
- Using Undo during the reduced difficulty extra Growth can cause incorrect behavior.
- Scapegoats (Terror Level 3) could miss destroying towns incorrectly.
- Using Bringer of Dreams and Nightmare's innate power on a Spirit with no elements can cause the game to get stuck.
- A town being destroyed by being replaced from a damaged Dahan piece does not correctly trigger Vengeance of the Dead.
- Blazing Renewal cannot add presence to an ocean when it should be allowed to.
- Dahan pushed into and out of an ocean with Infinite Vitality effect could be incorrectly drowned.
- Vengeance of the Dead does not trigger correctly when Dahan are drowned.

When sending in feedback, please take a look first at our status Trello board to see if it's already on the list. For gameplay issues, check the official FAQ to make sure it's really a bug, and not a misunderstanding. Interactions:
- Your preference to use a Blight card in the New Game screen will be remembered for next time.
- The board style can be changed from in-game options as well as from the main menu options.
- The graphics quality level of the game (primarily affecting the 3D map) can be adjusted in the options.
- Icons indicating an effect is present in a land (such as from Fear cards) are updated more dynamically.
- Made improvements to the lighting and colours of the 3D map.
- Added an optional new style of board (3D Classic) that uses the 3D view but with a brighter & flatter texture similar to the physical game boards.
- Using Undo after flipping the Blight card can no longer cause the game to incorrectly end prematurely.

Spirit Island has been out in Early Access for just two days and we are overjoyed with the response! We have received a mountain of great feedback from you already. Rest assured if you sent an email we will get back to you, but it might take a few days! We're quite happy that most of the feedback has been about suggestions, not bugs. We're proud of the work our developers have done and grateful to our excellent squad of beta testers. When sending in feedback, please take a look first at our status Trello board to see if it's already on the list. For gameplay issues, check the official FAQ to make sure it's really a bug, and not a misunderstanding. This quick update has a few improvements and fixes for some notable bugs that affected a few players. Improvements:
- We figured out how to keep the Invader pieces upright without their plastic bases. Thanks to those who suggested trying that!
- Cities and Towns are now easier to distinguish between in the 3D map.
- Added an indicator showing the number of cards left in your Power Progression deck. Click it to view the cards coming up in order.
- The Power Progression toggle in the new game screen (when right clicking a Spirit) has been moved to the top right and made easier to see.
- Improved animation for gaining power cards from power progression or the start of the game.
- Clarified that the "intro game" is not a tutorial. We will be adding a proper interactive tutorial to the game over the course of Early Access.
- Fixed an issue where Quick Play could occasionally cause a freeze.
- Gaining all your cards from Power Progression can no longer lead to gaining duplicate cards.
- Fixed a problem with Bringer of Dreams and Nightmares where damage caused by Dahan Insurrection was not handled correctly.
- Fixed an issue where the number of card plays this turn could display incorrectly in Guard the Isle's Heart.
- Fixed an error in end game score calculation.

Spirit Island is now available in Steam Early Access - and it's 15% off for launch week! The first Early Access release allows you to play full games with 1-4 Spirits. Most of the content of the core game of Spirit Island is implemented and playable: all Spirits, Power cards, Scenarios, and 2 Adversaries. Spirit Island is under active development and will be updated regularly. You can think of Early Access as a step between Beta and Retail release. There will be bugs, and some content is currently not available, but the game is much further along than what you might see in a Public Beta (See Steam's Early Access FAQ for more). New to Spirit Island? Why not watch an instructional video to learn now to play! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d2q9ZThCqrQ Over the next several months, we will continue to add features and content to the game ahead of its official retail launch later this year. Still to come:
- Interactive tutorial
- More animations and visual effects
- Extended music and sound effects
- Card library screen
- England adversary
- Thematic island boards
- Steam Achievements

In the most distant reaches of the world, magic still exists, embodied by spirits of the land, of the sky, and of every natural thing. As the great powers of Europe stretch their colonial empires further and further, they will inevitably lay claim to a place where spirits still hold power - and when they do, the land itself will fight back alongside the islanders who live there.
Spirit Island is a cooperative, settler-destruction strategy game designed by R. Eric Reuss and set in an alternate-history world around A.D. 1700. Players become different spirits of the land, each with their own unique elemental powers, forced to defend their island home from colonizing Invaders spreading blight and destruction. Your spirits work with the native islanders to increase your power and drive the invading colonists from your island in this strategic area-control game.
In Spirit Island, players choose between 1-4 spirits to control. The number of spirits determines the size of the island:
Spirit Island is planned to include the following:
- 8 different Spirits, each with 4 Powers unique to that Spirit
- Over 50 distinct Major and Minor Powers which Spirits can grow into
- A modular island, made up of 4 modular Boards, for a variety of layouts
- 15 Invader cards, driving a distinctive Invader expansion system
- 15 Fear cards, showing what happens as you terrify the Invader
- 3 multi-tier Adversaries (specific Invaders) for play variety and fine-tuned challenge: England, Brandenburg-Prussia, and Sweden
- 4 optional Scenarios for even more play variety
- OS: Ubuntu 16.04. Ubuntu 18.04
- Processor: x64 architecture with SSE2 instruction set support
- Graphics: OpenGL 3.2+ / Vulkan capable
- Storage: 300 MB available spaceAdditional Notes: Gnome desktop environment running on top of X11 windowing system Other configuration and user environment as provided stock with the supported distribution (such as Kernel or Compositor) Nvidia and AMD GPUs using Nvidia official proprietary graphics driver or AMD Mesa graphics driver
