Our very dear Attentat 1942 players, I am so happy to announce a new game by Charles Games coming in October 2024! Velvet 89 is a free game that will take you to the streets of several Czechoslovak cities, full of people who decided to speak up against an unjust regime and a title attentive to some of the overlooked aspects of it all. [previewyoutube=d9j-1URhyCI;full][/previewyoutube] Its twice a first for Charles Games a hidden-object game (we just love Hidden Folks) and a game about perhaps the most significant topic our countrys history in the last 35 years: The Velvet Revolution! We will let our new Steam page (including teaser!) to speak for itself: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3133340/Velvet_89/ With Velvet 89 we put a lot of effort into a) making sure the history is represented in a nuanced and truthful manner and b) stylized visuals with a paper-like quality to them. Youll be the judge of how successful we were in the fall, but until then, spread the word, wishlist (it helps) and look forward to the 35th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution with us and Velvet 89.
Hi everyone! I am happy to inform you that our free, narrative adventure Playing Kafka is out today! It might not be a historical game per se, but our DNA is still very much in it. Eager to hear what you think. Play here: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2911850/Playing_Kafka/ Thanks for your continued support! Ondej Charles Games
Hi! It might not be a historical game per se, but it still very much has the Charles Games DNA it it: Playing Kafka is a narrative adventure based on the work of life of the famous absurdist writer. It comes out May 21 here, on Steam, 100% free. The fully-voiced game (in English, German and Czech) was developed with Kafka experts. If you like what you see, wishlist, spread the word and help us Playing Kafka follows in the footsteps of Svoboda 1945 and Attentat 1942. A narrative adventure that adapts three books, but is still rooted in real-life: Kafkas biography as well as his apt social criticism. Check it out: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2911850/Playing_Kafka/ We are really proud, so I hope youll also allow me to share the latest trailer, showcasing all the three chapters, based on three Kafkas books: The Trial, The Castle and Letter to his Father. Hi!
We don't do this often, but we just wanted to bump up the sale of Attentat 1942 that is starting now to anybody who might be into history but was still waiting.
Since the release, a lot of things happened with Attentat 1942 so let me list at least some of them:
- we ported the whole game into the new engine and 4K!
- we were nominated for Apple Design Awards (with the mobile version) for Social Impact, yay
- the game came to Nintendo Switch, broadening the audience for stories we should never forget even more
- and we released the follow-up, Svoboda 1945: Liberation to great success
Well, we were a few years younger when we got the Czech Game of the Year award in 2018.
So that's it. The discount runs for a week and it's our biggest ever. We make games to be accessible and we hope it might allow more people to dive into histories that still shape the present.
And as always, thank you for your continued support!

Hello!
It is with great pleasure that I can announce that our very first Charles Games official soundtrack is out!
The 32-minute album includes a track from both Attentat 1942 and Svoboda 1945: Liberation. Mixing ambient layers with field recordings, experimental as well as historical instruments, it bears an unmistakable touch by its authors DVA. The Czech experimental duo has been around for more than 16 years and it has been an honor to cooperate.
Head to the official Steam page that includes snippets of some of the music - the collection includes previously unheard arrangements!
https://store.steampowered.com/app/2009820/Svoboda_1945_Liberation_Soundtrack/
We asked Jan (a half of DVA) about the whole process.
"Creating game soundtracks is a very specific thing. It reminds me of building legos, a lot of loops and emotions you then layer on top of each other. With DVA, we mostly do cheerful music, so Attentat 1942 and Svoboda 1945 have been a big challenge. We had to get serious, dark, which is out of the ordinary."
And apart from innovative voicework, cellos, and folk music, Jan also shares some peculiar instruments used.
DVA
"For the most part, we combined field recordings (train station, laundry, water powerplant) and acoustic instruments. We also used a very special bass clarinet, probably used by a German and later Czechoslovak army. Bra, my colleague from DVA, got it in some pawn shop. Even today, you can see the year 1939 on it along with a slightly visible Swastika."
We hope you'll enjoy our soundtrack! If you prefer to get your music on Bandcamp, you can find it on the official page of DVA - https://dva2.bandcamp.com/album/ost-attentat-1942-svoboda-1945-liberation.
And as always, thanks for your continued support!

Hello! We hope you are doing well, as much as possible in the circumstances. We have a new game to share! It's called Train to Sachsenhausen and its about student protests in Nazi-occupied Czehoslovakia. As of now it's available for free on iOS, Android as well as desktop (Itch.io). Imagine you are 20 years old, just starting your university studies. Suddenly, history finds you in your dormitory - how do you act? Will you participate in the demonstrations? Will you manage to flee the Nazi transport headed to a concentration camp? What will you do in the face of evil? Several endings and multiple storylines await. [previewyoutube=9CSzVbPb0GY;full][/previewyoutube] The game also includes a virtual museum put together by professional historians. The museum contains testimonies and memories shared by actual witnesses to that chapter in history, along with period documents and photographs. We'll be happy if you take a look and decide to leave us your feedback or comment. Together we can make sure that events like these are never forgotten and hopefully never repeated. Have a great rest of the day, Ondrej

Hi, Ondrej from Charles Games here! It is my pleasure to announce that our long-awaited game Svoboda 1945: Liberation is now finally released! It's a follow up to Attentat 1942, taking place after the very end of World War 2, dealing with its chaotic aftermath, the rise of communism to power and other dark chapters of European history. If you enjoyed Attentat 1942, Svoboda 1945: Liberation won't disappoint you. We pushed ourselves creatively and narratively, bringing you a game that shares the same blood type, while being different in its own way. Check it out here: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1076620 Some Attentat 1942 characters return, a cast of new ones awaits - from a German woman returning to her former home decades after being expelled, local businessman keen on reminding you of all the hardships private farmers had to face after the communist putsch, to other people who have their own views on what went down in Czech-German borderlands after World War 2. We'll be doing a release stream later today at 19:45 so drop by and help us celebrate! Set a reminder and learn more: https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/1076620/view/2992064312017115328 Svoboda 1945: Liberation would have never happened without you - our dear Attentat 1942 fans who supported us all these years. So a big thank you is in order. We are happy to start a new chapter of our studio with you. See you in Svoboda, Ondrej
Hi! We are thrilled here at Charles Games and fully enveloped in the hectic days of the last chapter of Svoboda 1945: Liberation development! Our next game is coming in two weeks, on August 3! It is a huge step for us and a great new experience for you or your friends. To give everybody a chance to play an award-winning Attentat 1942 (some of its heroes will return in Svoboda 1945!), we decided to discount it for a week. Now it's the best time to jump into our captivating story and get ready for things that will soon follow in Svoboda 1945: Liberation. Wishlist it now, by the way, if you have not done that yet. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1076620/Svoboda_1945_Liberation/ We are so much looking forward to hearing what you have to say in two weeks. Until then, take care! Ondrej from Charles Games
We'll be brief as the news speaks for itself.
Attentat 1942 is the finalist of Apple Design Awards 2021 in the social impact category!
It means a lot to us since it is a testament to the fact that stories we tell in the game resonate all across the world. We are humbled and even more motivated to finish Svoboda 1945: Liberation, coming out in August!
It's also a sign of a great appreciation for the work of our art director Richard Alexander and artist Ticho 762.
The award ceremony is on June 10th. Thank you all for our support and keep your fingers crossed for us.
Check out the rest of the nominees on the official page.

We don't often post about history here, but this anniversary is a big exception. If you played Attentat 1942 you know how cruel the Nazi regime was. The ultimate goal of Reinhard Heydrich and other Nazi leaders was to eventually eradicate or assimilate non-germanic nations. On May 27, 1942, Josef Gabk and Jan Kubi, supported by a vast resistance network, made an assassination attempt on Heydrich. After their weapon jammed, they threw an explosive in the direction of the governor's car. Heydrich died as a result of the injury days later. Gabk and Kubi took their lives, surrounded by Nazis, in a crypt of the Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius in Prague. Today, there's a memorial and a museum you can visit. The reprisals for Heydrich's death were brutal, including Nazis razing the villages of Lidice and Leky to the ground, more than 1500 people were executed, and 3000 Jews were sent to concentration camps. As you know if you talked to Mlek, not everyone agrees about the legacy of the assassination. Nevertheless, it is an important event that shaped the history of both Czechia as well as the rest of Europe. It is a reminder of the immense bravery of those participating in anti-Nazi resistance efforts. Our game couldn't have happened without them. Thanks for playing our games, because by doing that, you're helping us to keep those stories and events alive almost eight decades later.
Hi! We just wanted to let you know that a follow-up to Attentat 1942 is around the corner! Our next game Svoboda 1945: Liberation will be released in August 2021 and for a great LudoNarraCon festival (happening here, on Steam!) we prepared a short DEMO! https://store.steampowered.com/app/1076620 Svoboda 1945 takes place at Czech-German borderlands after the end of World War II and deals with many events happening there - mass expulsions, looming communist Coup d'tat, or fates of a war veteran. You'll meet a lot of new characters, but also some you already talked to in Attentat 1942! Expect a moving, historically accurate story, complex playable memories, and histories that shaped Europe. In the demo, you will go through the very beginning of the game, arriving in our village, and starting your survey in the local schoolhouse. The demo includes 4 playable characters as well as the main map, and other scenes for you to try! And don't forget to wishlist!
Exclusive behind-the-scenes streams!
For LudoNarraCon, we are hosting four special streaming events about Svoboda, where you can ask us anything and hear more about our approach. They will all happen on Steam and through Svoboda 1945: Liberation Steam page! The first one with our Lead Designer Vit stars 21:30 CET today (Friday 23rd!) See the schedule at: https://steamcommunity.com/games/1076620/announcements/detail/3068616627206633283 So that's it! We are so thrilled to be sharing the demo and those streams with you as we hope to catch up with our players, hear your feedback and show you the next big thing for Charles Games. See you all there. Ondrej Charles Games
Dear players, we at Charles Games hope you had a good start in 2021! Even though we're still working hard on finishing Svoboda 1945: Liberation and porting Attentat 1942 to yet another platform to reach more history-connosieurs like you, we never cease to think about the ways we can improve Attentat 1942 here on Steam. You've been with us from the start and we're thankful! So as of now, Attentat 1942 is available in 4K everywhere, including Windows and Linux machines. So be sure to update your game! You can now experience history in the greatest detail, read our encyclopedia entries without upscaling and enjoy our mini-games in the best way possible on 4K displays. To celebrate, we are hosting a limited History in focus sale, until February 10th, bringing down the price by more than a half. So if you have somebody that you think would enjoy Attentat 1942, you know what to do. Thanks again for all your continued support! It's been a ride and we're looking forward to staying on it with you. All the best and stay safe! Ondrej Charles Games
The game should now take full advantage of the 4K resolution on compatible displays. This update also includes minor fixes.
Hello amidst those troublesome times! We are sorry to all of you affected by game crashes upon updating to MacOS 11.0.1 Big Sur. Apple made some unanticipated changes and they broke the game for some of you. Also thanks to all your reports, we now published an update that should fix things for you. So make sure to update! If any problem persist, please do write us at info@charlesgames.net and we'll assist you. We wish you a pleasant holiday season and take care, Ondrej Charles Games
We are happy to bring you another big announcement. We discussed it in previous years, you've been asking us about it, but only after our switch to a new engine (introduced with our previous Remembrance Update) it became feasible. So as of now Attentat 1942 is available to play on Linux!
It took some extra programming, video recoding and a lot of testing, but we are really looking forward to seeing what players on another platform will think about our way of approaching World War 2 and history.
Our mission at Charles Games is to explore the narrative possibilities of videogames, especially when it comes to serious topics. Linux has been something we wanted to do for a long time, to bring our historically-acurate, captivating story to an audience that is keen on playing interesting games. We are happy to erase this debt.
And a final thanks all of you the in comments who helped us to make it happen.
So I hope you'll enjoy Attentat 1942 on Linux! And if you encounter any problems, please let us know here or at info@charlesgames.net.

Hello!
First of all we're rolling out what is the first post-launch update to Attentat 1942, polishing minor UI inconsistencies and fixing obscure bugs in specific situations. So play now to get the best Attentat 1942 experience on Mac and Windows.
But we also have big news! After weeks of toying with our development tools we reached the decision that we can safely announce that Attentat 1942 will be coming to Linux on June 16th! Rolling out here on Steam as well as other storefronts, with all the features of Remembrance Update. We know that Linux players had to wait, but our recent switch to Unity finally made it happen. And we are really looking forward to seeing the reactions of Linux players!
We'll be launching the Linux port in the afternoon, at 5 pm UTC+2/CEST. will drop an announcement when it's ready. See you then and take care.

We just added trading cards you earn while immersed in Attentat's story! We wanted to include them in Remembrance Update from the start, but it took us some time to get all of the requirements right. So instead we decided to postpone to give your the best version of trading cards possible.
Some of you might have already noticed some of our character portraits popping up in your Steam inventories. There's seven to collect in total. We hope this will improve Attentat 1942 experience for you.
And thanks for your recent support, we are delighted by all the interest in our game.
Talk to you again in the future and if you haven't, please check Svoboda 1945, a follow-up to Attentat, due to be released later this year.

Charles Games could never have happened if it wasn't for Attentat 1942. And our award-winning game just got its biggest update ever.
We spent a good portion of the last and this year porting the game to a new engine, fixing bugs and improving things as we went. We're excited to show you what is the best version of the game so far, so without further ado, here's what to expect after downloading Attentat 1942 Remembrance Update!
[olist]
Dear players,
First of all, thank you for your sustained support and kind words that are still coming, both in reviews and articles. We couldn't go on without you!
The mobile port of Attentat 1942 is coming soon. We had to remake the game from the ground up, switching to another game engine (details in our devblog). This allowed us to polish the desktop version as well and bring you what is the best version of Attentat 1942 ever available! That means not only bringing it to the newest MacOS (Catalina and forwards) but also improving a lot of small things we couldn't do back in the day.
We decided to call it Attentat 1942: Remembrance update, because we are releasing it the day after the anniversary of the assasination of Reinhard Heydrich was attempted in 1942. The update will, of course, be free for everyone who bought Attentat 1942, thank you again!
Most changes were made to the UI. We reworked the look of player profiles, updated character intro screens, improved visual quality of comics and videos. We fixed some bugs hidden here and there and shortened loading times. Under the hood, everything is new!
The update will be coming live at 27th May. We'll be doing a dev stream on our page to celebrate the occasion, we're looking forward to showing you what is the definitive edition of Attentat 1942.
So what about the saves?
Our switch to a completely new engine means that as much as we tried to figure it out, bringing over save files from the old version will not be possible. We are really sorry for everyone who'll be affected. Upon updating, you'll have to start your game again, albeit keeping all the achievements, of course. But if you are in the middle of a journey to finding your grandpa's fate, you can by all means finish it. We will keep the original game alive in a beta branch, selectable through Steam's settings (we will post the thorough guide later, the option will pop up in Attentat 1942 settings in Steam Library). Thank you for understanding. We are excited to bring you a brand new version of our game and we honestly believe it is worth the leap. It also opens up some interesting possibilities for Attentat 1942's future as well, including maybe (psst) Linux version... So that's it. We are now in the very final phases of testing, tying all the loose ends and preparing everything for what is the biggest update Attentat 1942 ever. Best Regards and we hope you're safe. Ondej Community Manager Charles Games
(The picture of Ludmila and Josef was our Valentine's Day celebration contribution) It was our goal for a long time, but with switching to Unity engine (we wrote about it here) for Svoboda 1945, a way to finally port Attentat 1942 to mobile opened! winter2019happydog Both Android and iOS versions are currently in development and if nothing happens the game should be out in spring. All dialogues and interactive comics' are implemented, most of interactive memories as well. We just need time to test, fine-tune things and make sure the port will be touch-friendly. We're looking forward to bringing our historically-accurate game to broader audience. Switching engines also means that Attentat 1942 will be again available on MacOS Catalina as we can easily create a 64-bit version! In the meantime, consider wishlisting Svoboda 1945, our next effort in making thrilling, yet serious historical games. This time, set amidst postwar chaos: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1076620/Svoboda_1945/
After months of development, we are happy to officially announce the next game we are working on! It will be called Svoboda 1945 and will immerse you in the story of a small town in the Czech-German borderlands, whose past is scarred by the violence that rocked the region in the wake of the Nazi retreat at the end of World War II. Go check out the Steam page and add the game to your wishlist! https://store.steampowered.com/app/1076620/Svoboda_1945/ You can also follow us on Social Media: https://www.facebook.com/Svoboda1945/ https://twitter.com/CharlesGames_cz Thank you for your support!
The wonderful feeling of releasing our game worldwide on Steam had one deep flaw - the fact that our game was unavailable in Germany. USK was not allowed to give age rating to any game containing Nazi symbolism - such as swastikas - that our historically-accurate game contained. This policy has changed only recently and games with such symbolism can now be evaluated. We immediately applied for rating, and are now super proud to finally present Attentat 1942 to our friends in Germany! Were actually the first game released on Steam in Germany containing symbols of Third Reich with the USK rating received after the policy change!
German translation
Furthermore, weve translated the game into German language, so our German-speaking players in Austria and Switzerland, who have been able to access Attentat 1942 in English, can now enjoy the game in their native language along with our new German players! Thank you for your support!
We're happy to announce that we brought home the "Best Learning Game" Award from this year's Games For Change festival in New York! The whole event was fantastic, there were so many pleasant meetings, and winning in our category means a lot to us. Thank you for your support!
Attentat 1942 was extremely successful at the Czech Game of the Year Awards! We've been awarded "Best Story", "Best PC and Console Game" and the main category "Czech Game of the Year". We are really happy and want to thank the judges and of course our players! This is huge for us!
You can see all the winners at the official website.
Thank you!

Were proud to announce that Attentat 1942 has won the MOST AMAZING GAME Award at Berlins A MAZE festival! We are absolutely thrilled for receiving the top prize at such a prestigious festival and would like to thank the jury and all our players for your neverending support.
Due to German legislation regarding Nazi symbolism in games, Attentat 1942 is still not available in Germany. At A MAZE we've discussed this complex issue and got amazing support from the festival and many individuals including lawyers, who offered to help to release the game in Germany. It will not be an easy process, but we are still determined to do it one way or the other.
Thanks for the support!

Attentat 1942 Linux [2.39 G]
It's 1942 and Reinhard Heydrich, the ruler of the Nazi occupied Czech lands appointed by Hitler, was assassinated. Nazi retaliation was brutal. Your grandpa was among the victims, sent to a concentration camp. But why? What role did he play in the attack? Why didn’t he tell his family? Was he brave or reckless?
Immerse yourself in a story about love, friendship and heroism among the horrors of a world conflict. Confront witnesses, experience the everyday life under Nazi rule and uncover the fate of your family in this award-winning game about World War II.
History made interactive. Attentat 1942 features:
- deep-branching dialogue, where your choices matter
- interactive comics and memories, hide resistance leaflets from the Gestapo or flee from a Nazi prison
- rare digitized film footage and historical items
