Master: Battle the clock in Challenge Mode. Type the words before they disappear off-screen! In order to get a high score you will need to read quickly and accurately.

Hiragana

The essential Japanese writing system.
Phonetic: each character represents a syllable.
All words can be written in hiragana and many textbooks require the ability to read it.

Hiragana is also used in furigana, a reading aid that displays the sounds of kanji characters.
Katakana

Like hiragana, katakana is a phonetic writing system.
These characters are used for foreign words (e.g. アメリカ -> amerika -> America / タクシー -> takushī -> taxi)

I developed You Can Kana over 2 and a half years in my spare time, and it's the first game I've commercially released. The game grew from a small idea: "I need to be able to read my Japanese textbooks quicker", with the hiragana and katakana lessons coming later when I realised that beginners could also use a game like this.

Since releasing the demo I've added handwriting support, JLPT mode, and Training mode, and I intend to keep supporting and improving the game from here.

I think that You Can Kana presents a fresh approach to Japanese learning games - minimal, relaxed, and not overwhelming the player with daily streaks or unrelated gameplay.
