Difficulty balancing The developing team at Zenovia Interactive and Tribute Games have calibrated the difficulty and made precise adjustments to the base game of Steel Assault, more precisely its normal difficulty mode. Its important to understand that Steel Assaults original game was designed around Hard Mode. The Previous Normal Mode was a less painful expression of the core game experience, bridging the gap between easy (for 1st time platformer players) and hard (for the true mastery of the genre). This original normal mode leaned too close to easy, a little too far from the authentic retro hard experience envisioned by Sri Kankanahalli the creator/designer of Steel Assault. The hard and the arcade mode remain unaffected by this update. So all you platformer aficionados and speedruns can rest assured that your records remain valid. Some Backstory


"A post-apocalyptic America", "the dictator who lords over the ashes", "2046"? but what really happened before the timeline of the game? We were thinking you might enjoy some key dates to better understand the world of Steel Assault.
  • August 2036: Black Widow Event (thorium-based radiation attack which rendered Americas cities uninhabitable)
  • September 2036: Start of Second Pacific War
  • February 2038: End of Second Pacific War. Magnus Pierce becomes dictator over the ashes of America
  • December 2044: Large-scale purge of dissenting govt. officials (including Taros parents)
  • January 2045: Formation of Daybreak Resistance, an underground movement to topple Gen. Magnus Pierce's regime
  • April 2046: Taro Takahashi, resistance soldier, is sent to Washington, D.C. to investigate suspicious activity
  • Today: The day you join the Resistance!

New Patch for the Demo: Readability + Balance Update!

Following the detailed and very welcomed feedback we got from players who've tried the demo so far, we decided to push a new patch for the demo. This patch only addresses some of the feedback we got.

List of Changes


  • Backgrounds have been toned down in Sea Invasion, Times Square, and TS Helicopter sections
  • All enemies take slightly longer to telegraph their attacks, and you have slightly more room for leeway dealing with them
  • Visual distinction between cancellable and non-cancellable bullets: non-cancellable bullets flash between blue and orange
  • Recharge time for "Slide" action is reduced slightly
  • Jetpack soldiers stop before firing their attack
  • Normal mode: Player no longer starts the stage on the minigun
  • Minor bugfixes

Playable Demo is Here! + Live Stream on Friday Feb 5th!

Steel Assault Playable Demo


The hype is real! A first demo is now available for the post-apocalyptic 16-bit retro-style action platformer! Play the demo and join us on a live stream Friday 4 PM (ET) on the store page. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1280300/Steel_Assault/

Jumping right into the action!


We wanted to give you a real taste of the gameplay so this demo is not the first level of the game! This part is set in the Sunken City of Manhattan which you would visit at a later time when playing the full game. You'll be able to try out different styles of gameplay available throughout the game. Enjoy the acclaimed gameplay trailer track as you make your way through the devastated lands of New York City!

For a limited time!


The demo will only be available for the duration of the Steam Game Festival. Make sure you try it by February 9, 2021 at 10am PST.

Difficulty Settings


You'll learn how to play the game with die & retry, just as you did in your childhood. (If you didn't learn that way as a child, then don't mind us, we are old, okaaayy!? Don't rub it in...TT_TT) However, the demo still has 2 different difficulty settings: Arcade & Normal. Arcade Mode: Looking for a challenge? You're at the right place. Normal: Looking for something a bit easier but still challenging? Normal mode is for you!

Video, Controls & Audio Settings


The demo has custom settings you can set to your preference. You can remap inputs for your controller as well as adjust Music vs SFX balance. Not so much into the CRT/scanlines effect? You can remove the effect in Options > Video. The game window ratio is the as a retro 4:3 monitor. This is the only game ratio available for the demo. You can change the size of the window of the game if you wish.

Live Stream Friday 4 PM (ET)


Meet members of the team this Friday, February 5th at 4 PM (ET). We will be streaming the demo on the Steel Assault store page. Game designer Sri Kankanahalli from Zenovia will be talking about the game's development process with Sandrine and Eric from Tribute. Steel Assault teams up with Tribute Games

So, as the big bold title states, Zenovia Interactive, developer of Steel Assault, has found a publishing partner for the game: Tribute Games! They develop and publish titleswith a focus on pixel art and classic game design with a modern twist. You might know some of their previous titles such as Panzer Paladin, Flinthook, Wizorb or Mercenary Kings. You can have a look at the updated Steam trailer right below.
