Dev Log: Lava & Livestock

Greetings, Star Stewards! We are back with another dev log! There are some really exciting things in store for you guys and coming sooner rather than later... get ready to get excited!

Prepare to Explore the Summit

A new area of the planet has been discovered and is being prepared for your exploration! Vulcan's Summit is hot - super hot. I guess you could say the open pits of lava might be responsible for that. Discover new wildlife, a new mining location, and even take a peek at Duyi's lander while you're wandering the summit. Make sure not to miss out on the "coolest" part of the summit however - there is a natural hot spring! With a little bit of fixing and questing, you can get the hot springs up and running to relax in and recover stamina.

Cows, Chickens, and... Robo-Cows and Robo-Chickens?

You wanted Robo-Cows. You're getting Robo-Cows! The long-awaited livestock feature is starting to look like it belongs on your farmstead. With a barn and special fencing to keep them contained and safe, you'll soon be able to have your own little herd of friends on your farm. Just be careful to not get stuck in the gate! If you want to be a normal farmer, you'll be able to get your cows and chickens through the resident animal lover Dirk. We know the truth however... you want to visit Aaron to get some robo-livestock.
If you haven't done so already, we would love to see your honest thoughts on the game with a Steam review. Reviews can make a huge difference for indie games and we love seeing what you think! Don't forget to follow us on our socials and join the amazing community in our Discord to share your feedback and thoughts as well as any issues you come across.

Dev Log: Happy Heart Day!

Happy Heart Day, Star Stewards! It's high time we begin sharing some of the awesome things in store for all of you as the game is being developed. Today is a perfect day to start sharing as one of the upcoming features definitely fits today's atmosphere - dating!

Introducing Sally!

We know her lander snuck in and has been making you all very curious about the new NPC that has been hiding. Well, wonder no more! Sally is the colonys shy but capable psychiatrist, counselor, and first responder. She's known to trip over her own feet sometimes but despite that special skill, she is a very reliable community member. Although she hasn't actually landed yet, you'll get to interact with her - and even romance her! - in a future update.

Romance & Dating

After building a relationship with a romanceable character and reaching 60 relationship points (we will go over this next time!), youll be able to craft and gift an omni-bouquet to them to trigger a special dialogue to begin dating. Keep in mind youll only be able to date one NPC at a time, so choose carefully! Once you are officially dating an NPC, you will be able to hang out with them on the Farmstead! Aaron, Eve, Linny, Dirk, Sally, and Fadhili will be the romanceable and datable characters in a future though there are many more that will come as the game development progresses. All the unique cutscenes are still in progress for most, but Aaron and Linny will show you a full dating experience once the update comes out - minus marriage. Marriage will come later on.
If you haven't done so already, we would love to see your honest thoughts on the game with a Steam review. Reviews can make a huge difference for indie games and we love seeing what you think! • Added an Interaction icon to the bottom right side of the screen that displays possible interactions.

Hello everyone! Its been a full 24 hours since release! Thank you all so much for your support and feedback especially through Steam reviews. Steam reviews make a huge difference for us as indie developers! If youre not on our Discord, please come join it as that will be the best place to leave us comments & suggestions, plus interact with our awesome community! Launching into Early Access brings a ton of feedback and we love seeing all of it. We are working right now on prioritizing and evaluating your feedback and suggestions. We held off on launching with a roadmap because we felt it was important to see players feedback before we committed to a roadmap. That being said, we are preparing one that will be available soon. More immediately, on launch day we sent out Patch #1 addressing feedback we got from the demo. Heres a list of those changes already in the game:

  • Roast Carrots now give a movement speed boost for 3 hours.
  • Solar Panels have an increased area of effect.
In addition, we already have Patch #2 that will be available by the end of the week. And are hard at work on Patch #3 to follow soon after. Following the immediate patch schedule, you can expect us to push out major updates bi-monthly with minor updates and patches as needed. Currently, this is what we are prioritizing and what will be coming in patch #2 and #3: Patch #2
  • Fix for Terraform texture
  • Fix for Shop UI missing portrait
  • Fix Omninac database entries for a few ores
  • Fix various typos
  • Colony food supply feature improvements
  • Add shortcut key for moving an item/stack from one inventory to another

  • Fix issues with lander not powering Omni smelter on first use
  • Fix cutscene black screens / controls not working
Coming Soon()
  • Improved night-time visibility
  • Character customization
  • UI Resizing
Eventually, the final game will of course have: Livestock, more NPCs, more crafting recipes, 2 more story acts, additional areas, deeper NPC relationship and dating system, seasons, more customization and lots more! Thank you all again so much and if youve played the demo-we have much more content in our early access launch! You can look forward to 10-15 hours of story content across 4 maps. This content will only grow as we move further to our 1.0 release. We'll be continuing to collect and sift through your feedback and input as we plan out future patches and updates. June Update - Its Demo Time!

Hi everyone! With Steam Next Fest rapidly approaching and our release date a little over a week away, we are excited to announce something we know many of you have been hoping for.

There will be a public demo on Steam for everyone to try!

If you arent a backer, now is the perfect time to take your first bite of One Lonely Outpost. The demo will be available throughout Next Fest which starts on June 19th at 10:00 AM PST and goes until the 26th at 10:00 AM PST. Play around, get to know your faithful companion named Qwerty, and let us know what you think! We also wanted to share some of the smaller improvements made to the game over the last month. So without further delay, here are our newest changes! Updated Storage Locker Customization We noticed that the original color choices for the storage lockers just werent quite giving the look we wanted. After a little bit of creative input and experimentation, we switched it up and changed them to a wider range of colors that now all look unique.
Omni-Forge & Refinery Interface For a good while now, both the Omni-Forge and Refinery have been missing a handy-dandy interface, but that is a thing of the past. Now you can see the items as they are being processed. Just drop your items in and go about your day!
Were counting down to release and are just as excited as all of our wonderful supporters for that day to come. Follow us on Twitter and find us on TikTok - yes, we just started! - for more content. May Update - Next Fest Inclusion

Hi everyone! We are back once again with a small announcement and some footage of updated features that have been added to the game! After winding down from a hectic March, we dove right into the game again to get a few things tidied up and two much-requested features added to the current beta version. First things first One Lonely Outpost will be participating in the Steam Next Fest which will be running from June 19th to the 26th! We are super excited to have this opportunity to share our game with you all. Content Creators: if you would like early access to our Next Fest Demo, please drop your information in this Twitter thread! Everything is really starting to come together and this month we made sure to get the two most requested features by the backers added to the game. These features were definitely needed and we are thankful to our amazing backers supporting us and giving us solid feedback along the way.

Being in a menu now pauses the game.

This was a huge need as we all know that sometimes players need to step away for a few minutes or take some time to read through the different menus as they learn the game. Previously, all of this would take in-game time to do and if you stepped away you would risk passing out. Now you can relax and simply take your time exploring the menus and be confident that if you need to grab a snack you wont pass out!

And what all our beta players have been asking for. stack splitting!!

Not being able to split stacks after they were combined quickly became an issue as our backers built larger farms, forcing them to sell large quantities of crops even if they only needed a few to meet the requirement. Now players can split a stack in half and quickly gather split stacks back together!
Thank you all again for your continued support and patience. We wouldnt have made it this far without all of you. March Update: PAX, beta testing and more!

Hi everyone! We're back again this month to show off some more of our progress with some current in-game footage! March was a busy month for us that included events, beta testing, and adventures!

Lets hop right in.

We showcased an exclusive One Lonely Outpost demo at PAX East this year. This demo allowed players who are not part of Kickstarter Beta to play through the tutorial of our game. It was awesome being able to see everyone enjoy all the hard work weve been up to.
We are officially one month into the Beta with our Kickstarter backers and we couldnt be happier with the excitement within the community. The Beta community has been hard at work alongside us this month, sharing valuable feedback and providing us with bug reports.
Thank you again to all our beta testers who have been active in our super secret beta discord channel! In this months update, we wanted to show you a little more about fishing in One Lonely Outpost. We have put a lot of work into our fishing minigame since its original concept by introducing a more futuristic method of fishing: drones! We gave you a sneak peek in a previous AMA and we are excited to show you what it currently looks like in the game today.

Fishing using The Piranha Drone

The Piranha Drone is our beginner-friendly fishing drone. Designed for shallow waters, it is a simple, efficient design. Check it out in action:

Sneak Peak: Bug Collection

Like fishing, we are utilizing the use of drones for specimen collection. While you explore the planet keep an eye out for bugs to collect using your drone. Heres a sneak peek of one of the bugs that you can collect - well hopefully show you more soon!

Adventure Time with Elisha

Last but not least, we introduced you to Jim-Bobs daughter Elisha in our previous update. While doing some exploring during our in-game testing we caught Elisha doing the same! You need to be quick to spot her, but it was fun seeing one of our NPCs out in the world.
This area is a crossroads, full of crystals and alien ruins which is probably why we caught Elisha exploring there! Being the first to meet intelligent life is her goal, after all! We cant wait for you to explore the planet yourself!

Discord AMA

Due to the busy month of March with PAX East, and feedback from our Kickstarter beta testers, we didnt end up having an AMA this month. We will be looking to resume them soon so be on the lookout for that! Join our discord to keep up-to-date on when we schedule our next AMA and interact with us! Thank you all for your continued support and patience. We wouldnt have made it this far without all of you.

February Updates!

Hi everyone! Weve made a lot of incredible progress this month and are very excited to show off all of it for yall! Lets just jump right into everything.

Elisha Update

Over the past couple updates, weve been showing off some of our character portraits. This month wed like to introduce Jim-Bobs 10 year old daughter, Elisha!
Elisha is a very smart and adventurous little girl. Shes always on the hunt for aliens and is determined to be the first to meet intelligent life. Besides her adventures, shes Jim-Bobs right hand girl when it comes to helping out with the various mechanical things around the colony.

Lighting update

As we showed off back in the December update, weve been updating some of our interior lighting. Heres a look at some of our landers in the day/night! Speaking of Elisha, heres the update to her room inside Jim-Bobs lander!

And now the rest of the lander!

Aarons lander!

Discord AMA

Due to working super hard on the beta, we didnt end up having an AMA this month, but will be looking to resume them in March so be on the lookout for that event! Thank you all for your continued support and patience. We wouldnt have made it this far without all of you. We cant wait to hear all of your feedback on the beta!

January Update

Hi everyone! Happy New Year! Hopefully youve all kicked off the new year strong. We certainly have Weve got a lot to cover this month, so lets just jump right into it!

Delay

Yes, you read that right. We are delaying again, but not by much! We are very excited to announce that we will for sure be launching One Lonely Outpost into Early Access in June of 2023! We know you all have been waiting for a while but were nearly there. Five months will fly by and were excited about the progress weve been making over the past months that have led us to be able to make this final decision for June. Were hopeful that the wait will be worth it and were definitely looking forward to hearing everyones feedback throughout Early Access. Now whos ready to see some of the progress weve made over the past month:

Eve Update

Eve is our xenoarcheologist that has joined the colony to learn about the beings that may have come before. You may be wondering, but shes blue? Isnt she an alien? Well she is of Itrii heritage, but she is in fact, just like you and I, a human, just a blue one. Much like Aaron and Jimbob, the rest of our cast is getting a little bit of a refresh to their character art. This is still very much work in progress for the new HD version.
Were not only going to be updating the face a little bit, but also fixing her base pose. She has a tendency to hide her face and having a default pose will allow people to better see what is important.

Duyi Update

Duyi has gotten the same art update treatment as our other NPCs. We had originally tried him out with the more realistic art style that we tried with Aaron, but upon hearing the communities feedback, we changed course and we went back to the old art like before and updated from there.

Duyi is our outpost metallurgist and will be there for all of your metal needs. As you can see from his outfit alone, he works in a pretty dangerous place and needs to wear protective equipment. For his pants and reinforced Tabi shoes, we took some inspiration from Japanese construction workers.

Sydneys Lander

Weve also been continuing on our journey of finishing up more NPC landers and updating the lighting a bit. This month, we have Sydneys to show off! Her lander doesnt have the fancy new lighting implemented just yet, but you can see how far her lander has come from before.

Discord AMA

Our monthly Discord AMA hasnt happened just yet so you still have time to join the Discord if you havent already! This months AMA will be happening this Friday (Jan 27th) at 4pm ET / 1pm PT and we will be ready to answer all of the questions you may have about any of the above items or any other questions you may have about the game. Were looking forward to seeing what all yall have in store for us

[ 2023-01-25 18:41:24 CET ] [ Original post ]

December Updates!

Happy Holidays everyone! We hope you all are having a wonderful holiday season so far and finishing the year off right! Before the year ends, we have some updates to bring to you all based on the feedback weve been receiving, as well as to show off some things that we showcased in our monthly AMA that we held last week. If you missed our AMA, make sure you read to the end to see what all you missed and how you join our next one. Now lets just jump straight into all of it!

Portraits

We have heard your feedback about the portraits! And we will continue hearing your feedback and making adjustments as necessary. Firstly, lets take a look at the progression of the beloved Aaron.
As you can see, his original portraits were a bit more of the rugged pixel art style that we turned a bit more HD for the original E3 trailer. We then progressed to the concept art we showed off to yall a couple of months ago. We took in all of the feedback that you all gave us and made some adjustments to the HD version and added in some new facial expressions. Here you can see how the original portrait looks in game versus the new one
Before
After We also did this sort of process with our community mechanical engineer (and Santa lookalike ), Jimbob.

Before
After Overall, the previous portraits for these characters just weren't exactly doing the job that we needed them to, so they needed a bit of upgrading so we would be able to include more facial expressions as well as general readability. The designs you see above are still in progress and not final designs, so we will definitely still be taking in criticism.

Interior Design

Weve been working on updating the interiors of the landers! Not quite like our portrait upgrades, so dont fret! We would still love to hear yalls thoughts though!
Weve updated the lighting a bit to give it a more cozy feeling inside, as well as adding in some various objects around the space to give a more lived in feel.
In other interior design updates, while we havent updated the lighting in Linny's cabin just yet, we have finished up the interior.

Discord AMA

As per our monthly tradition, we did an AMA with our game director, Emmanuel Floret, in our community Discord. This month, we had the special treat of having our art director, Johan Balan, joining us as well. While we had a smaller turn out due to the holidays, we were still able to show off a lot of awesome news stuff for everyone, including a lot of the above work and talking through any questions or thoughts that they had.
Q: While fishing, can you catch trash? A: No, no trash, but you will be able to catch other things. Q: Is there going to be a vendor to sell mine items? A: You have a merchant dedicated to prospecting to buy upgrades. The vendor also supplies the suit which you need to survive. Q: Since theres a drone for fishing, will there be a drone to help me care for the animals? A: Awesome suggestions as we did not think about that. The barn is basically what will take care of animals. For maintenance and petting, we will think about it. Since we already will have drones for crops, it is not that far of a bridge. Q: Can the drones be named? A: We have not planned for that at the moment. As we grow the universe and worldbuilding, we plan to slowly introduce different world-based brandings/logos so we arent sure if we will be able to rename drones. #lorebuilding We dont have a date just yet for our next monthly AMA, but definitely join our Discord to keep in the know for when we do schedule it! Thank you all for your continued support and patience as we continue working towards EA next year.

November Updates!

Hi everyone! Were back again this month to show off some more of our progress as we work towards our big EA launch next year. This month were showing off some of our character portrait upgrades as well as a look at some of our expansive fish catalog Now onto the updates! Of course, as always, things are still work in progress and subject to change between now and Early Access.

Character Portrait Updates

Weve been working on some portrait updates, giving our characters a bit of a refreshed look. Here you can see Aarons before
And his after.
One character update has changed a bit more than that though. I wonder who this could be

Dirks lander

In the past couple of updates, weve shown you some of our NPC landers. Today is Dirks turn! For some quick background, Dirk is our outpost veterinarian. They are educated, trained, and experienced in dealing with both biological and robo-animals, as well as a firm advocate of robo-animals as a humane alternative to slaughtering biological livestock. Heres a look at their lander both outside
And in!

Fishing

Like any good farming sim nowadays, you gotta have your fishing! Weve been working on including some pretty unique looking species for your catching pleasure. Take a look at some of the species weve created!

Discord AMA

As per our new monthly tradition, we did an AMA with our game director, Manu Floret, in our community Discord. Our curious community over there asked all kinds of questions about the game and we want to showcase some of those questions and answers as you may have those same questions! Q: Are DLCs planned? A: Potentially! We want to see how things go during EA and our full launch first and then look at what we could make for DLCs. We do have some ideas rolling around though! Q: How long will gameplay be in EA? A: Currently to complete the first Act, which is what we will be launching into EA with, itll take around 10 hours to complete that section of the story. After that you can of course keep playing indefinitely. TBD the acts after that. Q:Will there be pets? A: Yes! There will be some little pets that will follow you around the planet. Though we may have them do more as EA goes along. Q: Will you be able to customize your lander? A: As of right now, no. This may change throughout EA or be something we do for DLC. Q: Any big feasts or famine type events? A: Not yet. Definitely a neat idea that wed like to include but dont have plans for it currently. If you want to join in our next AMA, it will be occurring on Dec 23rd at 4pm ET. Itll be our end of the year OLO Christmas present to you all

October Updates

Hi everyone! Happy (almost) Halloween! Were back again this month to show off some more of our progress as we work towards our big EA launch next year. The main things well be showing off this month are some more of our NPC lander progress, as well as some extremely adorable animals. Definitely stay until the end to see these cuties! Of course, as always, things are still work in progress and subject to change between now and Early Access.

Sallys Lander

Sally has just landed at your outpost and is ready to become a part of the colony. Upon her landing, youll need to welcome her and have a couple of conversations to help build your relationship with her. Shes always looking to learn about others, so you might get some odd questions, like this one:
Now to her lander! As you can see, it's a little cramped in there, but its just enough to keep Sally feeling right at home.

Leeloos Lander

Leeloo is actually one of our Kickstarter backers' creations. While we dont have Leeloo ready to show off just yet, we do have her lander! Leeloo is a botanist, which you can definitely see from her natural themed decor throughout her lander.

Colony Center

Our colony center has a beautiful rock formation surrounding it. It's all coming together for our beautiful desert planet. This, of course, won't be the exact angle that you see it from in the game, but we had to give you all a nice look at it!

Cute Animals!

You may have seen some of these cuties on our social media previously, but theyre getting some new animations. They can now show off their emotions a bit more and really let you know if youve hurt their feelings. Hopefully once youre in the game, you wont see these very often.

Discord AMA

Earlier this month, we did an AMA with our game director, Manu Floret, in our community Discord. Our amazing community asked all kinds of questions about the game and we want to showcase some of those questions and answers as you may have those same questions! Q: What sort of things will be included in Early Access at launch? A: Fishing, animals (like the ones you see above), water and power systems, insects, shops, prospecting and maintanence! Q: Are there seasons? A: Yes! Radiant (24 days), Autumnal (16 days), Boreal (24 days), and Vernal (16 days). Weeks on this planet are 8 days long, thus the length of the seasons being multiples of 8. Q: Is gene splicing still going to be a thing? A: Yes! It likely won't be in our Early Access but will be there in our 1.0 launch. Q: Will there be character customization? A: Yes! It will pretty limited, but there will be some customization.

September Updates

Happy Fall everyone! The holidays are just around the corner, but we're not slowing down on our updates! Weve been continuing to work hard on OLO over the past month and have made some incredible progress to show you all today! We're currently working on getting everyone's landers into the game, all set up and ready for their crew members! Of course, as always, all content you see here is subject to change and may not be a final product. First up, we have Aaron's lander! Back in July's update, we showed off a bit of the concept art, outside view and a glance at what the inside was going to look like. Now we can show off a bit of what the lander is now looking like actually in game! From the outside
To the inside
Next up we have Jim Bob and Elisha's lander! For anyone who doesn't know Jimbob is a single father to Elisha and definitely enjoys his dad jokes In your lonely outpost, you'll find him to be your water guy, always making sure the outpost has fresh water to drink. The outside of his lander
The inside
And upstairs in Elisha's room
We also have a look at some of the power generators that you can use around your outpost We have an upclose look at how they glow at night
And even a look at how they will actually look like as you play in game
As always, if you haven't already, feel free to join our Discord (which will be getting some updates) as well as follow us on Twitter. To the stars!

August Updates

Hey OLO fans! Its been another month of hard development work so we have even more to show off about the game. We do want to start off with talking about our presence at Gamescom! Freedom Games has an awesome booth at the in-person event in Germany, so weve been lucky enough to be able to participate! As part of being in the event, weve crafted a new trailer to show off just how far the game has come since our trailer from E3 last year. [previewyoutube=nxxwpJ--DI0;full][/previewyoutube] As you all may have noticed in the trailer, we have delayed the game a little bit longer. I know that this isnt what any of you wanted to hear, but as the great Miyamoto said, A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad. We want to avoid remotely giving any of you a potentially bad, or even rough game. We are currently targeting March 2023 to launch into EA. With all of that being said, we do want to show off a bit of what weve been working on over the past month! We've currently been working on updating the environment and UI. The game is getting more and more polished as we're working towards EA.

As always, thank you all so much for your support so far. We know its been a bumpy ride, but knowing that we have such an amazing community behind us supporting us, makes it all feel worthwhile. If you havent already, please join our Discord where you can connect with the rest of the community as well as our team. Discord members also get to participate in different awesome events, which were working on ramping up more as we get closer towards launch, plus exclusive Moocifer adventures!

Julys Art Update

Hey everyone! Were still hard at work to hopefully be bringing you more content soon and get back on track with showing off all our hard work. For this month's update, as promised with our last update, we have some new and improved art to show off to you all today.

The Space Van

You may remember in the opening sequence of the game where you fly in on your spaceship, landing on your new homeworld. Well, as a refresher, heres what your spaceship looked like previously:
Also a quick reminder as to what the inside cabin of the spaceship, where you would buy and sell stuff on Deliverzon, looks like as well:
After doing some work for our 3D lighting system, here is what your spaceship looks like now! As well as what the upgraded interior looks like

While talking about the space van, if you would like to vote for the new official name of it, head over to our Discord to submit your vote!

Aarons lander

Weve also been making progress on upgrading the look of the rest of the beginning of the game, like when Aaron joins the colony! Heres a look at what the lander and the lander's interior looked like in our old beta:

Just like the space van, while working on the 3D lighting system, it got a very nice upgrade!

Sneak Peak

Heres a quick look at some concept art that our team has been working on as well! What do you think these are for

Don't worry if you think the game will be entirely 3D now. It's not! It will still be a 2D experience. The 3D look is just to add in our 3D lighting! We plan to have even more to show you next month! This is only the beginning of all the awesome upgrades that we have to show you all. In the meantime, join our Discord if you havent already!

Major Updates

Hey OLO Fans! First off, we want to thank you all for being so patient with us. Its been quite some time since our last update, so we have lots to update you all on. Lets just dive right into it.

Development

So you may remember from our last update (although quite some time ago) that we showed off some of our new 3D lighting aspects. Adding this in has taken quite a bit longer than we originally thought it would but we have finally gotten into a good process with it! As we just mentioned with getting into a good process with the 3D lighting, our processes needed a little bit of reworking. To be completely frank, we were in what is known as development hell. Having to rework practically the entire game, while going with almost an entirely new art direction, and just not having great processes in place to help us accomplish all of it really had us in a rough spot. With all of this being said, the game is quite a bit different from the alpha that our Kickstarter backers have had access to. Different in a very exciting way to say the least! We aren't quite ready to show off the new stuff just yet, but we will have something for you all soon! We cannot wait for you all to get to your hands on it and finally play it! Speaking of, lets get into some timeline updates.

Timeline

So our timeline has definitely shifted a little bit as Im sure youve noticed. We are now targeting Q4 for our Early Access release. Besides the Early Access update, we know the next big question you all have about timelines is when the beta will be released. Fret not! We have not forgotten about it. With all of the reworking weve had to do, weve had to push the beta back some. We plan to have a better update about when exactly it will happen. For now, we mainly wanted to give yall a better look sort of behind the curtains as to what has been going on and why weve been delinquent on updates for the past almost yr at this point.

Rectifying it

Now that you know all of the struggles weve been working through, lets dive into how exactly weve been getting ourselves back into the proper swing of things. So, to help get us back on track and really working towards our Early Access weve made quite a few new additions to our team! Emmanuel Floret - Game Director Johan Balan - Art Director Alexander Samarin - Senior programmer John Gilette - Senior programmer Gerald Gombrio - Junior programmer Gabriel Lucena - 3D programmer Daniel Harris - Senior artist With all of those additions, we want to give a special shout out to one of our Discord mods, RaveMonkey, who we have now brought on to help Kerri out with community management. If you have any questions in the Discord, her or Kerri will likely be the ones to help get you those answers so that the rest of our team can continue focusing on development. With all of these new folks and the new processes that theyve helped us implement, our development train derailment has been placed back on the tracks and is now properly chugging towards EA! Again, thank you all for supporting us, believing in us and being patient with us through all of this. Its definitely hard to make this update, but in order to be the most transparent with you all, it must be done. We hope that you all will continue sticking around with us. If you want to join our (not so lonely) outpost, you can join our Discord (where we may be running some emoji contests ) or follow us on Twitter!

July / August Dev Updates

Hey OLO Fans!

Weve been continuing to work hard on One Lonely Outpost and we have lots to update you on, so lets get right into it!

Behold! Corn! (and 3D lighting)

The one big thing weve been working on behind the scenes is finally ready to be shown off. We will be including 3D lighting in our pixel art environments! Below you can see a gif of what this lighting looks like. Weve had to do a lot of testing and reworking to get to this point, but were beyond excited with how it is turning out!

Test of our custom-made sprite modeling system with Sydney. Don't worry about the artifacts in the shadow; we already know how to fix those :)

Worldbuilding

With all of the 3D lighting work happening, weve also been optimizing & tentatively finalizing the map layout. You might have gotten a peek into what this all looks like over on our Twitter or discord.
Weve also been working on more ship interiors for all of our NPCs. Lots are definitely still being worked on, but heres a look at just a few of them.
Simons Interior (Synthetic Botanist)
LeeLoos Interior (Naturalistic Botanist + Elishas Bedroom)

Narrative

We're going all-in with the characters - mountains of interact dialogue, lots of cutscenes for those who show an interest in the characters, and more! (though for the most part interacting with the NPCs extensively will be optional, but why would you want to avoid them?) You'll notice later that we brought on a lot of writers, including Xan who has previously worked on Coral Island, and Matt who worked on a licensed Final Fantasy IP. Portraits and sprites are also coming along great. We're also finally getting to those short stories promised to Backers - we'll have the first batch ready later this year!
Say hi to the final version of Eve! A shy but brilliant scientist researching the alien ruins!

Fishing!

We've got a prototype of the fishing minigame done now - it's pretty far from our final idea, but in our (probably not so humble) opinion, we think it already gives Stardew's fishing a run for it's money xD In the final version, not only will it just look better in general, but you'll also be able to customize your fishing gear to make the hook float higher or lower, and attract different kinds of fish. We use a left/right reeling mechanic - It's much easier than it might look.

Expanded team!

To help get all of these awesome parts of development done, weve added lots of new members to our team! If you see them around in the Discord, definitely say hello and welcome them! 5 new writers - Ana, Matt, Xan, Laurie and Jesse 3 new 3D artists - Ali, Samer, and Marco 1 new programmer - Michael 1 new designer - Mark 1 new audio director - Dale Thank you all for your support throughout development so far. If you want to be a part of the community, maybe see some behind the scenes happenings, as well as get direct access to the devs to ask questions, make sure to join our Discord! Also dont forget to wishlist One Lonely Outpost if you havent already!

Publisher Announcement and Minor Delays

Hi everyone! Today we have some exciting news to share, which is that we can finally announce that One Lonely Outpost will be published by Freedom Games (https://freedom.gg). Weve been working with the Freedom team for a number of months behind the scenes, but are now ready to officially announce our partnership. Teaming up with a publisher is what will help us deliver the best possible game to the most players. For those of you who may not know, a game publisher not only can provide additional investment and funding for developing the game, but also takes care of a lot of the business and marketing side of releasing a game. That includes setting up and managing our store pages and the console release process, marketing and advertising the game, helping showcase the game at both digital and live events, PR, and other similar functions. Really it lets us totally focus on working to make the game the best it can be, and provides us with the resources to do so. Which brings us to another announcement we have to share about our release timeline. Originally we had been aiming to have our Steam Early Access release around October of this year. That timeline was based on our plans and resources at the time, and with changes on both of those fronts (ultimately for the better), weve decided that we are going to push our Early Access release into the first few months of 2022. The decision to push back Early Access was not an easy one, as we know youre all crazy excited about this. We know it may be tough to hear that its going to be even longer before many of you are able to play OLO, but this adjusted timeline will let us deliver a significantly better game to you all, one that really lives up to the vision we have that youve all supported. Well be able to add Multiplayer and detailed, game-wide pixel art, along with just... MORE. More NPCs, more cutscenes, more mini games, more all-around, and all of that will be of greater quality too. Theres even yet again more things being developed that we cant talk about yet because were still validating that theyre possible! With that said, we will be starting our Beta (Earlier Access, as weve called it previously) further in advance of the Early Access than originally planned. Before it was going to be about 3 months before that release, but now it will come in October, more like 5-6 months before normal Early Access. We are also NOT pushing out the full release of the game at this time - we are still on track to fully release OLO out of Early Access in late 2022. Well see how that date holds up in the long run, but for now its still good! You may also be concerned about horror stories of publishers ruining the vision of a game or forcing arbitrary restrictions on the dev team. For Freedom, that cant be further from the reality we have experienced with them. Freedom has been an amazing partner to us, only enhancing and supporting our vision. We were very careful when considering which publishers offer to accept, and selected Freedom because they are committed to our vision of the game, and only want to see it reach its full potential as we see it. We maintain complete creative and development freedom, and Freedom (heh) wouldnt have it any other way! As if that wasnt enough, the Freedom Co-Founder owns a 60 acre farm! How cool is that? As always, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your support and encouragement! We cant wait to share One Lonely Outposts truest vision with you all. (PS: If you are a Kickstarter backer, dont forget to complete your BackerKit survey if you havent yet done so!)

January / February Updates and BackerKit!

BackerKit Youve been asking for it and were finally able to bring it to you! Missed out on the Kickstarter and really want to get alpha access? Well, I present to you the One Lonely Outpost Backer Kit! Join our Discord for full information and to ask any questions you might have. Alpha/VIP Tiers are limited quantity and only around for a limited time! Progress Updates Expanded Team & Game-wide art upgrade: We've added 3 new artists, Irina, Matteo, and Gregor, rounding out our art team to perfection and allowing us to tentatively push towards our ideal vision of the game - fully rendered environments! I've always disliked that the concept art usually looks better than the game. So, we're now pushing towards having the entire game hand-rendered in pixel art! Tiles and grids will only be in the game to aid with farming and customizing your farm area - the rest will be beautifully hand-created pixel art. Multiplayer Groundwork: Multiplayer has definitely been our biggest hurdle as its taken considerable rewiring in the game in order to make sure that it works how it needs to. But! The sooner we put 'the time' in to finish the not-so-interesting mountain of work that goes into multiplayer, the less work it will take overall, leaving more time for other features we want to add. If all goes well, we'll be out from under the shadow of multiplayer rewrites by the end of April, and there might even be a (VERY shaky) version of it to try then! Or maybe not - multiplayer is known in the industry as the most difficult feature you can add to a game for good reason, so we'll just have to wait and see. Animals: Another big thing were going to be working on adding into the game is the ability to purchase animals and their robo animal counterparts.
More To Come: Some more exciting things happening with the project which we will cover in the next update! Make sure to join our Discord for some behind the scenes happenings there, as well as getting direct access to ask the devs questions!

  • A barren, alien world needs YOU to bring it to life!

Start out with just an ancient space-RV, your handy tech gauntlet, a handful of potato seeds, and work to build up your colony. Grow crops to attract colonists, build a town and economy, and work to achieve independence while establishing your colony as a prime destination.

Whether you opt for an all-natural farm or a more high-tech one, you'll need to balance producing food with other activities on your planet. Explore alien ruins to learn more about this strange world, grow your relationships with the many different characters that will join your colony, and have a blast playing various mini-game activities along the way.

It's One Lonely Outpost … but not for long!

    Decide: Natural or Synthetic?

Order up some supplies from Delivz-On, fertilize the ground, and plant crops with a unique tending mechanic – blow off dust, clip off dead branches, and watch for bugs! Pursue either a Synthetic route with robo-cows and gene-splicing (watch for glowing cabbages), or take the Natural path where you raise Earth-based farm animals and hand-tend your prize crops for premium produce. With either path, the more and better food you can make, the more colonists you can attract.

Build a Community and Forge Relationships

Every colony starts out with just one person (and a robotic pet), but colonists from around the galaxy will come to conduct research and offer other roles or services to help you grow the colony into a full-fledged town. But our career isn’t everything in life – befriend your fellow colonists to find fully developed people with their own histories, lives, and dreams. Grow your rapport with more than just gifts from your farm; perhaps even one relationship will result in true romance!

    Explore Ancient Ruins

Ancient alien ruins have kept their secrets for millennia -- until you’ve come along. Discover why a barren world is full of all of the features necessary for life, even though according to top scientists it shouldn’t. Puzzle and/or fight your way past the robotic guardians and be rewarded with rare items and a deeper understanding of your new farm planet.

    Customize Your Character

Develop a unique sense of style and personality with clothing options and character statistics.. Choose how to balance your strengths and weaknesses across farming, exploring, crafting, socializing, and dungeon-diving as you progress on your journey.

    Play To Your Interests

There’s no set path to perfecting your colony. Any element of the game can be played in any order. Whether you choose to focus on tending your farm to unlock every perk, spend all day exploring ruins fighting robots, or dedicate yourself to building up the town and connecting with residents, fun and rewards await to be discovered along the way.

    Share With Friends

Play online with up to 3 other friends in collaborative co-op as well as competitive minigames. Friends can either visit your existing outpost with a greenhorn character, choose to start a fresh world from scratch together, or take a short vacation on your main to see what other colonies are up to, all while developing new relationships and even building branching families with other player characters or NPCs.
