Greetings Residents!
This past month has been eventful, both literally in real life and more virtually here on Steam. Happy Pride Month!
In real life, our main developer Ruby has been out of commission for a little bit (including resting up and staying healthy), but things are picking up again as we revisit our last bits and bobs before launch. Well hopefully have a roadmap and release date to share with you soon. (Here's a cute server giving some side-eye to a house)
Meanwhile, here on Steam, event after event seems to occur. For example, Mossfield Origins was selected by the Cozy and Family Friendly Games Celebration and the currently ongoing Future of Play Festival. We have more in store for the coming months, so welcome, any and all new residents who discovered us through these promotions. All we want to do is make a lovely little experience for you to play, and your wishlist and eventual purchase helps us go on to make more like it.
Were up to more than 28,000 wishlists now, which is great, but if you have a friend who likes snack-sized builders, why not share it with them today?

One of the artistic goals of Mossfield Origins is to reflect a healthier relationship thats possible between humans and the world(s) we live on, depicting a more sustainable approach to life and our habitation. If thats a theme that resonates with you, it might interest you to know that Kitfox is also supporting World Oceans Day (thats today!) with a special bundle! You can buy 4 Kitfox games at a discount, and your purchase benefits the Whale and Dolphin Conservation charity.
Thank you for your support!

Good afternoon Future Residents, A reminder that the Kitfox 10th Anniversary Sale is on for two more days. All our games are on sale, so don't miss out! This week's update shows off the visual upgrades we've beamed down to the planet. Even the textual elements are more clear. Read the full brief:
Build Detail
The building progress visualization module has been installed for Residents which helps clarify status (and just looks cool).
(view high quality)
Text legibility
Previous text display for the mission suffered some artifacts when rendered without high quality settings, and had issues with certain fonts and languages. We redid all the text visualization to look crisp and clean at any quality or resolution (view the image below full size). We also implemented ways to share all the format and styles across the mission display such that we can change it in one spot and have everything update (e.g for user configurable text scaling and accessibility later).
Tech details ahead: Text previously was decent (msdf), but is now using the latest MTSDF form for best quality and scaling - if you're curious it looks like giant colorful blobs of letters before being shown!
(view high quality)
Lighting display
A little more tech related details on "how to fix the muddy colors and make them look better" by fixing the tone mapping. For a small bit of history, when I started this project I implemented it as a blank void where I played with environment lighting. The left hand side was the default exposure for the environment, the right side is the exposure turned all the way up. I thought it looked a lot nicer, and continued to add grass, and then a whole game...
Along the way I must have had trouble with the look and for some reason hardcoded an extra "undo that exposure please" into the global display outcome (not a good idea!). This was kinda ruining all the colors, squashing them. Once I noticed it, I realized all the colors, color grading, and tone mapping were based around this invalid setup. That meant redoing the look from the bottom up, making sure all the colors come through as intended, and just LOOK at the difference
It's not that the game looked bad, but when compared with the new one and what I had intended visually, you can see how flat and muddy it was in comparison.
Bonus points
With all the colors cleaned up, I also added a debanding pass which smooths out all the gradients and colors and makes everything really satisfying.

Hello Residents, It's your mission director checking in with an update about the mission launch.
The preparation for the journey is moving along well, with a lot of loose ends cleared up and a lot of major improvements landing to make our experience better.
(Note some details/visuals are not final, and the gifs lose a lot of quality!)
Camera
Earlier versions of the camera were a little awkward, relying on keyboard keys and flaky screen edges (especially annoying when viewing from multiple desktops). The camera has been upgraded to drag based, so you can play with just a mouse if inclined (the keys remain).
(view high quality)
Paths
You'll also probably notice the paths are now cohesively connected. Our previous path representation (if you recall) left a lot lacking, and didn't quite convey what makes them relevant to the mission. The placeholder paths from before were stones and didn't connect at all (WARNING: old image!):
The new paths are a lot better, and you get a lot more feedback about how they work and their connectivity and whether they're in use by a resident:

Outlines
When inspecting multi-space buildings on the mission, they didn't properly highlight all affected spaces which was unclear to Residents.
Now they do, and Residents appreciate it.
Mission updates
We look forward to launching the mission this year Residents, and hope you stay safe and excited. Hello future residents,
Welcome to February! In case you missed last months update, we are excitedly preparing for launch this year! Soon you will be able to cozy up and manage your own little space community.
Recently we ran some playtests with close friends and family to test out the design and tackle any early bugs that may appear. Check out what our playtesters have been up to in this gameplay impressions video. Keep in mind that this is early testing footage and does not reflect the final version of the game. Things done in the video such as placing buildings outside the fog is not part of the final experience:
[previewyoutube=67KH5vSK67Q;full][/previewyoutube]
We hope to open up testing to at least SOME members of the public soon, perhaps as spring approaches and the snow thaws. Make sure you join us over at the Kitfox Discord to chat with other residents and the devs and find out when the next phase of testing begins, or compare ideas for sustainable architecture and interplanetary diet management just beware scammers! Weve had a few false friends on Discord claiming to represent Any% or Kitfox, so just keep in mind we will never ask you to install an exe, and if the beta invitation is not coming from someone with rights on the Kitfox Discord server, theyre probably not to be trusted.
One of the quiet truths of Mossfield Origins is that recreation is research, that by taking care of yourself and balancing your life and work, youll contribute more meaningfully to both in a holistic way. In the game, your residents need time for themselves, recharging them to get back to whatever building tasks you might need during their worktime. Maybe we can see beta testing as a great example? More research for us and more recreation for you, but also a bit of both on either side.
To my family back home:
I wish you could see the sky here with me. In the day we imagine new ways of living, without damaging the ground beneath us, a new future. And at night, the stars form new patterns and clusters, and we can imagine new stories and legends, a new past and present. My favorite right now is a group of 5 stars to the northwest these days, in a rough V. I think of them as The Flock, an ever-migrating collective through space and time, unified in destination and purpose.
I hope youre well and can join me soon.
Also, the Kitfox team will be at PAX East! Let us know if youre in Boston, as well be hosting a panel and event around Dwarf Fortress and maybe well have more Mossfield Origins news?
Until next time,
Alexandra, Tanya, and Ruby
Launch year
That's right Residents, our mission launches this year! The exact date isn't known but when LiFE corporation informs us, we'll let you know.
mission parameters initialized... incoming transmission - in world destination located
Play Testing & Events
Since mission preparation is ongoing, we've been inviting potential Residents to run through the protocols and it's been going quite well. We've redone the first hour of the mission at least three times, so you know it's working. If you're a potential Resident interested in testing protocols for the mission, make sure to keep a signal locked with the Resident Community Space (e.g the Kitfox Games Discord) if any future opportunities arise.
Reality Entanglement Breach
We were fortunate to have Mossfield Origins be selected as part of the Games In Action - Interactivity / Activation \ Activism event at UBC in Vancouver, Canada. This was the first time the mission was observed in the field with unknown Residents testing experience parameters! It was valuable to watch Residents who aren't familiar with city-building experiences engage successfully, which is one of our goals. There were also those that did have previous encounters with the genre who reported enjoying it too. Almost all players hit the end of the test (between 45-60 minutes Standard Earth Time) which data confirms was a great success. After the event, there were many parameters adjusted to better suit future Residents as a result.
Mission Development Progress
We've solidified the specifications of the expected Resident experience and are now working on the last half of the journey.
Localization
Part of doing so is making sure we support a range of Residents by localizing the mission experience (please note, localization data shown below was obtained for test purposes and is not final).
This is more of a debug testing harness, but there's a more directed path for configuring your Resident experience.
Gamepad support
Part of our efforts to support a wider range of hardware for Resident experience is making sure gamepad input is fully supported. It progresses well - the capture below shows engaging with gamepad only.
We've also been working on making it easy to choose a different button set. If you look closely and squint past the GIF quality... cough
Resident Enrichment Facilitation
More details on other mission parameters from LiFE corporation can be expected in future, but while you wait, enjoy a preview of new homes, new buildings and more:

Steam Base Builder Fest
Mossfield Origins will also be a part of the Steam Base Builder Fest next week! The event runs January 23 at 10:00 AM PST (UTC-8) to January 30 at 10:00 AM PST (UTC-8) on Steam, so be sure to drop by.

A Small Cozy City Builder Style Game!
Take your time and build the best self sustaining community for your residents in this chill, relaxing builder, with no time pressure or external forces.
In the community, all buildings are built from the same foundation and are upgraded via tech tree. Refine your space as you discover available building options and technologies. Refactor and redefine your space over time to complete your mission.
Progress through Research Levels to progress technology, but pay attention to resident expectations: with higher level technology they'll have higher expectations to progress. With plenty of recreation time, we research ways to improve our community and figure out new ways to do things.
We Were the First
We've come here to undo some of the harm done by those before us.We'll dismantle their abandoned research facilities and re-purpose their technology to do so.
