We're doing PRETTY WELL! Closing this crazy 2022 celebrating
And that's not only because our football team won the World Cup, but also because we have just released a new game on Steam:
Out of Bounds is a peculiar title that was originally created for a game jam the past year (Epic Megajam 2021). As a solo dev, I had 7 days to create a game that was later released for free on Itchio.
Since I liked the result of the jam, I decided to keep working on that idea for the next months and also some great devs (former colleagues from other projects) joined me to get the best results in visuals (Viktor Ahmed and Claudio "Scuzzo" Sagrera) and audio (David Levill)
THE GAME
Out of Bounds is a title about "creating" a game and "fixing" bugs... Yeah, it's crazy. You will pickup blueprints, compile shaders, test sound effects, drink a lot of coffee. But it was just now that we actually make something special to celebrate it. HELLBOUND... HELLBOUND?
This month we received the great news from our (now) former publishers that they're giving us back the IP of Hellbound What does this mean? Finally, we at Saibot Studios are going to start receiving sales from Hellbound on Steam. Since the release of 2020, all the sales went to the publisher because that was what we stablished: they recoup their investment first, and then we split; but we never reached that last step because they never recoup their part with the sales we had. But now after two years from the release, they're giving us back the game so we can atleast see some of the sales. Also, we got back the full rights of the project to take any desision we want from now on
In March of this year there was the Best of Boomer Shooters Bundle, the first collection of Humble Bundle focused on retro FPSs. Hellbound had the honour to be included in that package, becoming the first argentinian game in participate in the iconic Humble Bundle: https://youtu.be/ndqIlyYFVJM Both the sales from this collection and also the sales from now on (September of 2022) at Steam are going to us at Saibot. Yes, finally! But unfortunately, this aren't earnings for us yet, since we still need to recoup all we put to create the Hellbound: Survival Mode in 2016-2018. So the future of Hellbound is still uncertain... The good thing is that everything has started looking brighter now, we'll see how things turn for our Hellgore in the next months That would be all for now, people. Hello, people! How are you? How did you started 2022?
In a day like today, but from 2012, we officially started a crazy adventure called Saibot that continues to date. Actually, the very begginning was in 2011 with the conceptualization and prototype of what ended up being our first title Doorways (read more). But it wasn't until March of 2012 that, after I partened with my Uncle and friend Ivan Rusjan, we finally started working as a team. We built the first Saibot "office", which was actually my room along side the bed and at my Mom's department, and we used some old tables as desks that my Grandma gave us And from then, a lot of enechdotes and experiences started hapenning. With tons of fails and drop downs, but also with some wins, we were able to keep going to date doing what we love the most: creating our own games and delivering them all over the world So I decided to take some time to build and share with you a quick recap of some of the main milestones we have achieved together with you during the last 10 years of Saibot...
2012: The Origin
- Started the team and office with only two members (picture)
- Started the development of the first game and saga: Doorways
- First public presentation of the game at the event EVA 2012

- Trip to E3 thanks to a contest we won at Indies Crash E3

- Launch of VR (virtual reality) version of Doorways: Prelude with the Oculus Rift Dev Kit 1 (first argentinian game published with VR compatibility)

- Moved to new home-office with our own space

2017: New Beginning
- New team members were introduced for a much bigger project in Hellbound
- Recorded motion captures (MoCap) for animations of Hellbound (Hell Knights, Vladers)
- Built and published Hellbound's teaser trailer (picture). For the creation of this particular video, we did live action takes as references, then did motion captures (MoCap), and finally rendered everything with high quality specs; everything done here in Argentina

2018: Survival Mode
- Launch of Hellbound: Survival Mode as Early Access
- Created a Kickstarter campaing for Hellbound to complete the funds for the campaign
- Had a TV showcase with Santiago Do Rego and Sebastian Di Nardoon at TNT Sports about Hellbound's Kickstarter
- Allied with NGD Studios (currently named Nimble Giant Entertainment) to publish Hellbound's campaign mode
- Hellbound wons an Unreal Dev Grant for the development of the project (first argentinian game to get one)
- Hellbound: Survival Mode wons a price at expo EVA 2018 as best game created in Unreal Engine (picture)

THE BLACK HEART (OCT 2021)
The game The Black Heart, created in its majority by Andrs Borghi, a very talented multimedia artist with whom we had the pleasure to work with for promotional videos of Doorways and Hellbound. The past year we joined forces with Andres to publish his masterpiece on Steam. We started with Early Access, we kept improving the game and we finally got a definitive version ready to launch The full game release is next Thursday: October 21. IN LESS THAN A WEEK! Today is the non-official 10 year anniversary of Saibot Studios. A whole decade!
On March 19th of 2011, while I was still working for other local game development companies, I took the time during a trip with my mother to El Palmar (Entre Ros) to start conceptualizing what ended up being our first game Doorways.
That same year we had the chance to create a prototype, then I started my own studio with the support of my Uncle Ivn and we called it Saibot. Officially, in March of 2012 we started working full time in my room-office located in the town of Caballito (Buenos Aires).
Too many things happened since then: a lot of fails, some success, but tons of amazing experiences at the end of the day...
So below I'm sharing with you some of those old concepts I did during that weekend of 2011

Hey everybody! How are you doing?
We're doing very well, entirely working in Hellbound as always. But this time and due to the quarantine established here in Argentina because of COVID 19, every one of us is working from home
Even though the project originally started with all of us working from distance, during the last year and a half some of us have been sharing the same working place.
We started at the old Saibot office located in Caballito (Capital Federal of Buenos Aires), and most recently we moved to Vicente Lpez (province of Buenos Aires).
So we had to set up some stuff to get back to this remote working thing, but it's actually doing pretty well so far

- AUDIO: The music for the entirely game has been created, it only needs some new masters and final touches

Happy 5th Anniversary, Doorways and Saibot Studios! That’s it! Today, Saturday March 19th, Doorways turns 5 years. While the first chapter of the game was published in Desura and on our Website (using the Humble Widget) on August 15, 2013, and then the final version of the first two chapters on September 20 of the same year, that wasn’t the beginning of this adventure. A year and a half earlier, in March 2012, we started developing the game as a team, Martin Voychisko and me, in my room in my mum’s house. (picture) But neither was on that date the beginning of everything. Before that we made prototypes in late 2011, when I was still working at NGD Studios. And yet, that was not the beginning. What I’m going to tell you happened exactly 5 years ago, illustrated by the first picture from the album. This is something I’ve come to find out recently, when I was looking through some photos my mother took on a trip we made to El Palmar (Entre Rios, Argentina). It was on that time when I made the first sketches of what would become Doorways (at that time it wasn’t even named that way). I’m also sharing (unpublished before :D) some drawings that I done at that time, which turned out to be part of the final chapter of the saga. However, in some way or the other we’ve always managed to create something that was always better than what we had created before –we‘ve gained experience, we’ve put it into practice and we never thought in giving up. It is truly rewarding to see what we have achieved so far in all this time :) And I would like to thank once again all those people who have supported us: family, friends, colleagues and followers of the game. Hello everybody. How are you doing? We want to tell you about our situation with Doorways and Saibot Studios. -- Even though 2014 has been a pretty productive year for us, there have been also happening some issues during it. We dedicated the most of the year to create a third chapter of Doorways with much more content and quality than the previous chapters. The invest both in hours of work and in money was also a lot bigger than before. But unfortunately the new chapter Is not giving back what we were expecting. There’s people who prefer the first chapters or even people who doesn’t like the new one as a separated game, but that’s okey for us. Fortunately the critics are still much better in this new game. But the problem came with the sales. The reason is pretty obvious, right now Steam is full of indies due to the massive quantity of games being approved at Greenlight. This can be good for some, but it’s not for teams like ours. With the amount of games being released every day, it’s too hard to get some distinction. And, even though we tried a lot, we never get any answer from Valve about getting Doorways featured at any kind. Steam has been great for us at the beginning. We’re more than glad to have the opportunity of releasing our work at the biggest PC store, but things have changed a lot since last year. -- Another problem we had was the implementation of the Oculus DK2. We finally got a kit and we wanted to have it implemented for Halloween as a special update (like we did last year with the DK1 in Doorways: Chapter 1 & 2). We dedicated entire weeks, day and night, but we couldn’t get it working properly. This was because of some external technical problems. We use Unity 3D for Doorways. We really like it as a videogame development tool, but when it comes to video quality/performance, things got mad. Unity implemented a new system for the DK2 which is extremely heavy when it comes to dynamic lights and shadows (this elements are inside Doorways from start to end). We did everything we can, trying different options, asking people, but we couldn’t get closer to something that works properly in a standard PC: a max of 15 FPSs, and that’s even worst when you’re using the Oculus. And having it implemented, it will also affect the performance and display of the DK1, so we decided to let the DK2 go and preserve the DK1 which is still working well. -- This have been some of the reasons why we have been a little down during the last months. And believe me, it’s not easy task to deliver a project like Doorways with a team of 5 people, which only 2 of us have the chances of working full time on the project (yes, most of the time we’re a two members team). So hope you understand our absence during the last months. ---- But not everything is dark :) We had the opportunity of getting into the Steam Halloween sales and into some bundles, this things slowly help us to start recovering everything we invested in The Underworld. And at the same time, we decided to take a little break of Doorways to try making some new stuff. Hola a todos ¿Cómo están? Queríamos comentarles acerca de nuestra situación actual con respecto a Doorways y Saibot Studios. -- Si bien este 2014 ha sido en general un año muy productivo para nosotros, también ha tenido sus complicaciones. Dedicamos la mayor parte del año a crear un capítulo mucho más robusto en contenido y calidad que los anteriores. La inversión tanto en horas de trabajo, como a nivel económico, fue también mucho más grande que en el juego anterior. Pero desafortunadamente el nuevo capítulo no viene dando los ingresos que esperábamos. Si bien hay gente que prefiere los capítulos anteriores y también gente que directamente no le ha gustado el nuevo capítulo como juego separado, afortunadamente las críticas son en su mayoría mejores a las de los primeros capítulos. Pero aun así las ventas no vienen bien. El motivo es evidente, Steam hoy día se encuentra sobrecargado de juegos independientes debido a la aprobación masiva y constante que decidieron hacer en Greenlight. Esto genera que equipos pequeños como el nuestro no logren destacarse en la tienda. Sumado a esto, y luego de múltiples peticiones por parte nuestra, jamás logramos conseguir ningún tipo de “feature” en la tienda. Steam nos ha dado mucho permitiéndonos publicar nuestros juegos en su tienda, pero hoy día (luego de un año de la salida de los primeros capítulos), las cosas han cambiado significativamente. -- Otro tema a parte que nos trajo complicaciones fue la implementación del DK2 de Oculus. Finalmente habíamos logrado conseguir el kit para implementarlo y queríamos tenerlo como actualización para Halloween. Dedicamos días y noches enteras pero no pudimos llegar a algo que nos convenciera. Esto es por temas técnicos, relacionados con el rendimiento. El motor que utilizamos para desarrollar Doorways es Unity 3D y este implementó un nuevo sistema para vincular el nuevo Oculus. Pero este es extremadamente pesado cuando se utilizan sombras y luces dinámicas (elementos que están constantemente presentes en Doorways). Hicimos todo lo posible, probando diferentes técnicas, pidiendo ayuda en distintos lados, pero no logramos conseguir algo que anduviera bien en computadoras estándar. E implementar esta nueva configuración también afectaba a la versión del DK1, que si está disponible y funcional en ambos juegos. Estos han sido dos de los principales motivos por los cuales hemos estado un tanto desanimados este último tiempo. Créanme, no es tarea fácil llevar adelante un proyecto como Doorways con un equipo de 5 personas, de las cuales solo 2 de estas tenemos la posibilidad de trabajar en tiempo completo (si, la mayor parte del tiempo somos un equipo de solo 2 integrantes). Espero entonces sepan comprender nuestra falta de comunicación en los últimos meses. ---- Pero no todo es oscuridad :) Por suerte, hemos tenido también la posibilidad de entrar en las ofertas de Halloween y en algún que otro Bundle, que nos permiten ir recuperando de a poco todo lo que hemos invertido. A su vez, y para descansar un poco del “terror” de Doorways, estamos haciendo algunas pruebas para un próximo proyecto. The main things are: - Crash during loading screen for some devices fixed. - Voice overs during introduction and in-game now working when Voice over is on. - Wrong collisions in maps fixed.
