Completely refreshed Story Mode, with brand new hand-made levels across five distinct regions. Defeat each regional capital to unlock iconic landmarks in Sandbox Mode!
PLEASE NOTE: This is a major, breaking change from the original story mode. When you upgrade to 0.940, you'll receive a notice that your story progress is reset. Don't worry, any upgrades you've already unlocked will carry over to this new version, from extra strikes to setpiece disasters. But you'll need to play through the story to unlock new landmarks in Sandbox Mode!
Story Mode

Use every disaster in your repertoire to conquer each city's unique challenges. There are new objectives to overcome. New megastructures to mangle. And existing megastructures have unexpected new twists. Experiment to take down the indestructible TV tower, or see what effect sharks have on a cruise ship!
Sandbox Mode

Every time you defeat a regional capital, its landmarks will become available in Sandbox Mode. Iconic buildings and recognizable monuments are just the beginning. Look out for offshore oil rigs, floating cargo ships, and even a Ferris wheel!
New Setpiece Disaster

Joining the volcano, hurricane, kaiju and skybeam is an incredible new setpiece disaster: the A-bomb. Earn at least 25 stars in Story Mode and head to the Upgrade Shopping Network to unleash the awesome power of the atom in Arcade and Sandbox!
Feedback
Share your thoughts on this update, what you think of the new levels, and anything else you'd like to see in the game with our feedback buttons (email and social media), or right here with your Steam review or on the discussion board. We're finalizing our plans for leaving Early Access now, including adding support for alternative control schemes (especially controllers and keyboard shortcuts), so make sure your voice is heard as we head into the home stretch! Happy smashing...

This latest flood of improvements to Unnatural Disaster upends the rules of the game, and provides a bridge to the next phase of development.
New Fluid Simulation

The core of this release is the completely new, fully-simulated volumetric water system. Liquid doesn't just react to disasters, it occupies space and can pool, gather, and flow realistically on the terrain! This doesn't just look cool, it has a big impact on the way the game plays. Take tsunamis. Underwater earthquakes cause waters to recede at first, before roaring back bigger than before and sweeping away anything in their path. But they also require more finesse and strategy to use. The deeper and larger the body of water, the greater the effect. Puddles won't cut it! Since this is a new and massive change, your feedback (and bug reports) are critical!
A Bigger Sandbox

[th]Plasma Ball[/th] [th]Transformer[/th] [th]Fuel Silo[/th]

Sandbox Mode has grown! New tools have been added to take advantage of the updated fluid simulation. Add or remove water to craft your own mountain lakes, reservoirs, canyons, or oceans! These tools are accessible in Edit Mode under the faucet tab. Terrain tools (raise, lower, level) are now consolidated under the shovel tab. And there's one more tab you won't recognize: landmarks. This includes a few new toys for creating your own awesome sandbox scenarios:
- Plasma Ball: Smash this to release a pulse of energy, disabling nearby obstacles
- Transformer: Erupts in flames on destruction
- Fuel Silo: Volatile and prone to exploding (try lining them up in a row for extra mayhem!)
What's Next

The fluid simulation rewrite has been an opportunity to clean up some things under the hood and take a big step toward the ultimate 1.0 release. On the way there... Story Mode is getting an overhaul. The new suite of tools added in this update will open the door to previously-impossible scenarios. Expect to see big changes here soon! Sandbox Mode has some surprises in store. Without giving too much away, look forward to more goodies in the landmarks tab. And of course, your feedback will continue to shape the final product. Be sure to share your thoughts with the in-game feedback buttons (email and social media), or right here on the discussion board.

Happy smashing!

Another week, another wave of Unnatural Disasters! This update features a new setpiece disaster, multiple new challenge cities, and a host of quality-of-life improvements.
New Challenge Cities

Welcome to the Windy City! With an iconic skyline littered with recognizable landmarks, Chicago is the birthplace of the modern skyscraper and the perfect playground for Unnatural Disaster.

No city is more of a lightning rod for fictional disasters than America's capital, Washington DC. This map is centered on the National Mall for maximum disaster-movie-homage potential.
New Setpiece Disaster

But what's the fun of a new toybox without a new toy to play with? The star of this update is a new setpiece disaster, the SKYBEAM. Is it a solar flare? Gamma ray burst? A tragically misguided attempt by alien life to establish communication? Whatever it is, it's an incredibly satisfying way to obliterate a city!

Quality-of-life improvements
Finally, there are some nice QoL improvements to share.
- News broadcasts are easier to rewatch with the new DVR channel.
- You can now skip the Breaking News / end-of-game summary animations by clicking anywhere on the screen or pressing the "Q" button.
- A Retry button has been added to the Pause menu, for those occasions when failure seems inevitable.
- Kaiju has gotten a buff - powering it up not only makes it rampage for longer, but grow much larger as well.
- And lots more!

Happy smashing!

Welcome to the most significant one one-thousandth of a version bump in Unnatural Disaster history! This update completely overhauls Sandbox Mode AND greatly expands disaster interactions. It's two giant leaps crammed into one tiny step!
Sandbox Mode overhaul

First and foremost, Sandbox Mode has received a well-deserved refresh. The UI has been rewritten with clearer iconography and a more visual distinction between Play and Edit mode. Setpiece disasters like the volcano, previously only available in Arcade Mode, can now be used in Sandbox Mode too. Even better, this includes the new setpiece disasters added in the last update (0.92) - hurricane and kaiju! (Provided you've unlocked them, that is.)

There are also a number of usability and quality-of-life improvements to share. From better debris cleanup to smarter undo functionality to a brand-new tutorial, Sandbox Mode is the place for more crazy and creative fun than ever.
New disaster combos

Continuing with the theme of empowering players to do more, this update also makes big changes to the way disasters work together. Combining disasters and interacting with the environment to amplify their effect has always been a key part of Unnatural Disaster. But now, number and utility of interactions has increased dramatically:

On the left is the old set of positive, neutral, and negative interactions between the core disasters and environmental fire or water. On the right, the newly reimagined set. This update attempts to maximize those positive interactions, so combined disasters are nearly always more than the sum of their parts.

For example, an incoming meteor during a rainstorm will now transform into an ice meteor, causing both meteor and water damage on impact and making a splash even on dry land. Also, lightning strikes that fizzle out on water or under rain can stun and temporarily disable nearby defenses, turning a previously 'wasted' interaction into a powerful new tool for tacking well-defended cities! Thanks for playing and supporting Unnatural Disaster through Early Access and beyond! Remember, please share your thoughts on the discussion board. Your feedback is essential for perfecting fast-moving and earth-shattering updates like this one. Happy smashing!

This update adds requested new features, along with improvements under the hood that will allow for even more great stuff to come. Read on to learn about what's included and what's on the roadmap!
Daily Challenge

This feature has been a long time coming, but what is it? In a nutshell: new levels delivered daily! Play every day to face off against challenging new scenarios, and maintain your winning streak for a chance to face off against...
Real Cities

Every week streak earns an encounter with a real-world city! Seattle, New York, and Auckland are among the first to be included, with more coming soon.
New Disasters
Head over to the Upgrade Shopping Network and trade some stars for exciting new setpiece disasters. Once unlocked, you'll get access to a loadout menu anytime you play Arcade Mode to pick your finishing disaster of choice. In addition to the existing volcano, new options include:
Hurricane

A whirling tropical cyclone will bring massive storm surges that devastate huge swaths of cityscape.
Kaiju

This massive beast eats skyscrapers for breakfast! Power it up to extend its flamethrowing and bulldozing rampage.
More to come
Smaller improvements abound, but the biggest changes are yet to come. A refactor of the way objectives work will allow new objectives to be added, making Daily Challenges even more varied and interesting, and supporting some cool new scenarios in Story Mode. More real cities will be added soon, and there could even be more setpiece disasters in the future. Plus, sandbox mode will be getting a refresh with improved UI and more features. Thanks for playing Unnatural Disaster. I hope you enjoy these additions and keep sharing your thoughts and feedback. Happy smashing!

- Added defense level slider to Sandbox Mode. A higher defense level equals more durable buildings and more capable obstacles
- Added saving to Sandbox Mode. Currently allows saving one custom configuration - terrain, buildings, obstacles, and defense level - which is then loaded automatically on the next visit to Sandbox Mode
- Right-click to cancel stops any in-progress aiming but no longer deselects the current disaster (so it works the same as dropping an unwanted disaster in the deselect tray)
- Bugfixes
[ 2021-08-20 15:19:28 CET ] [ Original post ]
- Added ability to right-click to cancel current selection (dragging to the side of the screen also still works)
- Changed target icons to make fire- and earth-type targets more distinguishable
- UI improvements in Sandbox Mode
- Minor graphics upgrades
- Bugfixes

- In response to complaints about the news anchor's mumbling being "repetitive" and "annoying," we're trying out a new vocalization technique that makes dialog sound more simmish or AC-like while still capturing the tone of the original
- Numerous bugfixes in Sandbox Mode
- Added volume option to main menu

Sandbox Mode is our most-requested feature, so we're taking advantage of Early Access to put it in your hands as soon as possible. Fair warning, it is not as polished as the other gameplay modes! Not yet, anyway. But core functionality is there, so this is the perfect time to put it out there and start getting feedback.
The first thing you'll notice about Sandbox Mode is the lack of strikes or objectives. All upgrades are available (fast-plant trees, wind control), and there is no limit to the number of disasters you can spawn.
But that's just the beginning. Click the wrench icon to switch to the edit tools and unlock a whole new level of control!
The top three tools on the left are for manipulating the terrain. Raise, level, or lower the ground by clicking and dragging to highlight rectangular patches of earth. (Raise and lower also work by clicking a particular spot).
The shield icon brings up the defense tray. Select any disaster icon and click on the map to spawn defenses against that disaster type - Wind Turbine for Tornadoes, Tuned Mass Damper for Earthquakes, etc. Keep in mind, most require at least a 2x2 section of flat ground.
Finally, the pin icon allows full control over the map and city layout. Click and drag on the map to move the city 'core,' where buildings are initially spawned.
On the right side, the building icon regenerates a new city at the current core location. The trash can icon removes existing buildings and roads, simplifying terrain editing. And the warning icon generates a new map entirely, providing a blank slate for experimentation.
What's Missing?
This is the earliest possible version of this mode we're comfortable sharing, so there are going to be a few rough edges and missing pieces. For instance, there's no tutorial (since things will probably change around a bit anyway), and it's not currently possible to save your creations and come back to them later. That said, those and more features are in development. Stuff like the ability to speed up or disable city growth, or change the 'defense level' that dictates how powerful defensive structures are and how resistant buildings are to damage, are on the way. We hope you enjoy Sandbox Mode and can't wait to see what you do with it. Above all, please share your thoughts on the discussion board. Your feedback is essential for developing this mode further! Happy smashing!

Unnatural Disaster is now available in Early Access! Download and play to get in on the ground floor with a full-featured game at the best possible price. And stick around to help shape what more it can become! With your support, we'll continue to add to and improve on what we've built - and have some fun along the way. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1414400/Unnatural_Disaster/
Why Early Access?
So players can help us grow Unnatural Disaster into the best game it can be! We're proud of the core gameplay and existing content and already have a detailed roadmap for future improvements, but your feedback will be crucial for shaping what we build going forward. With your help we'll refine what we have, prioritize what comes next, and ultimately deliver something for everyone to enjoy.
Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?
We're planning on 3-6 months of concentrated collaboration with the community to take this game to the next level, but of course plans may change depending on what our players value most. And exiting Early Access is not the end - we'll continue to grow and support Unnatural Disaster even after it's 'done.'
How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?
We have big plans for Unnatural Disaster. Daily challenges, real-world cities, and a custom level editor are just some of the things we're working on. But we need your help to decide what to make next!
What is the current state of the Early Access version?
In many ways, Unnatural Disaster already stands on its own. It includes two feature-complete game modes: Story mode is more puzzle/tactics focused with 60 levels of increasing difficulty, while Arcade mode leans more action/strategy and provides a different randomly-generated experience every session. These modes will be revised and improved, but the bulk of Early Access will be focused on expanding the scope of the game with new modes and more content.
Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?
Everyone who supports this game will be able to enjoy its improvements no matter what. Early adopters are compensating us with their valued feedback, and we will in turn support them with free upgrades forever. The price will scale for new players as more content is added to the game to reflect the additional value.
How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?
Your opinions and feedback will help us shape what Unnatural Disaster becomes. Contact us in the Community Hub, or right from within the game, and tell us what you'd like to see!
Happy smashing!

Next Fest
Showing at Steam Next Fest was a big milestone. Our first ever livestreams introduced the game to tens of thousands of new players. At one point we had more than 4000 concurrent viewers! Thousands of players had a chance to download and play our demo, and our Wishlists and Follows have exploded. A number of streamers also reached out and covered the game, which was a huge honor! Thank you all for taking an interest in Unnatural Disaster!
Takeaways
Feedback to the demo was very positive, which was incredible! We picked up on a number of issues that streamers and players alike ran into, and are working on addressing them for release:
- Players want more flexibility and freedom to experiment (sandbox mode)
- Some story-mode objectives were not clearly explained
- Certain disasters, like tsunamis, are too hard to activate
- The camera controls need some work

Next Steps
The next milestone is releasing the game to Early Access, where players will be able to give feedback on the end-to-end experience, suggest features to add, report issues to fix, and generally shape the direction of the game! To get ready for that, we're...
- Fixing bugs and pain points discovered in the demo
- Adding key features that are essential for a good experience
- Building a backlog of Early Access priorities
- Laying the groundwork for big future updates
